Notes |
- Leon Clifford Willett, 96, a resident of Pullman, Wash., died on Thursday, Sept. 23, at Pullman Regional Hospital of age-related causes.
Leon was born Jan. 25, 1914, in Glendive, Mont., to Clifford and Pearl (Thompson) Willett. The family moved to Forsyth, Mont., where he and his twin sister, Leona, started school. After living for a time with their grandparents in Lusk, Wy., they moved to Ivanhoe, Minn. with their father and stepmother.
Then the family moved to Northfield, Minn., where his father found employment at Carleton College. During the Depression, Leon served in the Civilian Conservation Corps.
In Northfield, he met Inga Overby, and they were married on Feb. 9, 1935, in Faribault, Minn. They made their home in Northfield for many years. For most of their time there, Leon worked for Carnation Milk at its Northfield Milk Company facility. His hard work and sense of fair play led to his promotion to foreman over men many years his senior.
When the facility was closed in 1963, Carnation transferred him to Waverly. After retirement in 1977, Leon and Inga moved to Pullman to be close to their oldest son, Roger. In the spring of 2009, he sold the family home and moved to an independent living apartment at Bishop Place in Pullman.
Leon enjoyed gardening and keeping his yard in tip-top shape. He was very proud to have won the Pullman Yard of the Month award. He also enjoyed woodworking, making cedar chests for his daughters-in-law and granddaughters, and school desks for his grandsons. He also made an impressive array of knife holders and trivets. He and Inga were very active in church activities and thoroughly enjoyed interactions with the young college students in their group.
Leon was preceded in death by his wife, Inga, on Sept. 26, 2000. He is survived by their sons, Roger of Pullman, and Bryce of Carlsbad, Calif., and their spouses Thelma and Melinda, by a half-sister, Marrianne Casteel of Phelan, Calif., and by 11 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Leona; his brother, Duane; two half-brothers, Arnie and Clifford Jr.; and three half-sisters, Phyliss Hussy, Bernyl Ness and Marlene Person.
