Notes |
- Her name is from her son George’s death certificate.
Find A Grave has her birth as 1871 in Germany and her death as 18 Jan 1949 in Bloomington in Hennepin County. (These particulars are for the wife of Leonard Kornder’s brother.)
In the 1905 Minnesota census, she is Babetta A., age 36, wife of Leonard G. Kornder, a gardener in Bloomington. The couple’s five children are George J., 17, Eddie G., 13, Julia M., 9, Elsie F., 7, and Eugene H., 5.
According to research done by Rhonda, Babette had a sister Maria who falsely accused a black man named Lewis Carter of rape. Carter was later pardoned by President Benjamin Harrison after an investigation by Frederick McGhee, Minnesota’s first African-American attorney, resulted in a signed admission by Maria Kapplinger Scholl that she had lied in the original 1885 criminal case.
