Shown as 29 year old Rohus Fautch, railroad worker, in the town of Oscar, Township 133, Otter Tail County, in the 1880 census. He, with his wife Paulina and children Emil and Anny, appear to be living in a household headed by Clarence Ricker. Several other railroad laborers also live in the household including a Matt Fautch, age 27. In the formation of the township of Carlisle (township 133, range 44) in Otter Tail County, “R. Fautch” and “Mathew Fautsch” were listed as “qualified electors” in the petition of organization dated 14 March 1881.
In the 1885 state census, he and his family lived in Howard Lake in Wright County. The household consisted of R. Fautch, 85, L. Fautch, 29, A. Fautch, 8, Annie, 6, Agnes, 5, Peter, 3, and Katie, 1.
In the 1895 state census, as Rufus Fautsch, he and his family live in the village of Waverly in Wright County. Rufus is a railroad section foreman. The household consists of Rufus, 44, Paulina, 39, Anna, 16, Ignatius, 14, Peter, 12, Katie, 11, Matilda, 9, Leo, 7, Mary, 4, and Agnes, 2.
In the 1900 census, the family farmed in Woodland Township, Wright County. Rufus came to the U.S. in 1868 and was born in Germany.
In the 1905 state census, Rufus and family were in Woodland Twp where the family had been for 8 years. Rufus is shown as having been in the state for 37 years, his wife for 24 and a half.
He was Rufus Fautsch in the 1910 census. Emigrated in 1868. In that 1910 census, only Agnes, Alphonse, and John were still living at home. Rufus and Paulina were shown as born in Germany with Polish as their native language.
In the 1920 census, he is living with son Emanuel in Enderlin, North Dakota. In that census, he came to the U.S. in 1868 and was born in German Poland. His native language was Polish.
