Notes |
- He was living with his uncle, Theodor Johnson, in Fergus Falls in the 1900 U.S. census, employed as an “agent for cigars.” That census claims he came to the U.S. in 1880. As Fridthjof, or any variation, he doesn’t appear in any other U.S. censuses. However, a 33 year-old Fred Whist, born in Norway is recorded in Los Angeles in the 1910 census. Fred is a restaurant waiter and is married to Hilma, age 27, born in Sweden. That Fred and Hilma, now with a daughter Thelma, are still in Los Angeles County in the 1920 census. Fred is now 45, works as a salesman for a produce company, and claims to have come to the U.S. in 1890. By the 1930 census, Hilma, now as Helena, is a widow, still in Los Angeles. Hilma died in Los Angeles in 1959. Her daughter Thelma (born Edith) died in Los Angeles as Thelma Niederwerfer in 1993. Hilma’s maiden name is Andersen in Thelma’s death record; Hilma’s maiden name is Olson on Thelma/Edith’s birth record.
A 21 year-old “Axel” Whist was a land office clerk in St. Paul in the 1895 Minnesota state census. That Axel had been in Minnesota for two years.
