Knut and Marit were from different Søndrol farms and may be distant cousins.

In the 1865 Norwegian census, she was 19 years old, still single, and living with her parents and siblings on Søndrohl, mitre in Vang.

Vang A, p. 816, says she came to the U.S. in 1865. Earl Knutson’s research of the West Norway Lake Lutheran Church says that Marit died in 1883.

According to a Norway Lake church record, she came to Norway Lake in 1872.

She is not listed in the 1885 state census.

In the 1900 Norwegian census, she was probably the Anne Torsteinsdatter, b. 1851, who is living with her husband and two children on the Myre farm in Vang. Her husband is Ole Toressen, b. 1841, and the two children living with them are Knut Olssen, b. 1891 (”søn, søger smaaskolen”) and Gjertrud Olsdatter, b. 1893. Neither the marriage nor the birth of the two children is recorded in the Vang church books.

Her family farm name was called Sönderold in her birth record.

In the 1865 Norwegian census, she is 12 years old and living with her parents and siblings on Søndrohl, mitre, in Vang.

This Randi is the Rangdi Søndvol to whom Ove Ovesen Ellingbø refers in his 1896 letter to his mother. According to Trudy: “She first married Torstein Flaten from Bøaflatadn in Vang. They lived in Minneapolis until Torstein died in 1895. She took the children back to Norway for a few months and then went back to Minnesota, settling in Sunburg where she married Torstein Hollen, born in Hoverstad 63 in Vang. He was a widower with children. They had 2 children. She died in Minneapolis in 1909 and he died in Sunburg in 1930. I don't know if they stayed married or not.”

Called “Maude” in the 1885 state census.

In the 1895 Minnesota census, she (Randa) and her family lived at 1604 E. Lake Street in Minneapolis. Tosten, 47, was a “dairyman.”

In the 1900 federal census, she and her second husband, Thosten Hollen, and her and their children lived in Kerkhoven Twp, Swift County. Randi came to the U.S. in 1869 and Thosten in 1866. Randi had had 10 children, 9 still living. The children from her first marriage that were living with her were Baldor, 14 (b. Feb 1886), Nordal, 12 (b. Jan 1888), and Walter, 9 (b. July 1890).

In the 1905 state census, Tosten and his and her children still lived in Kerkhoven. Rangdy, however, along with four of her children from her first marriage were living separately on a farm in Murdock, Kerkhoven Twp. Rangdy and her children are listed with the last name Flattan. Those children are: Baldor, 19, Nordahl, 17, Valtor, 14, and Meble, 12. They live next door to Ole and Sigre Ellestad (#1953 and #1956).

She is Ronda Flaten on her death certificate. In that certificate, she is identified as a widow living at 2011 2-1/2 Street in Minneapolis. She married at 19 and had 10 children, 8 of whom were still alive at her death. No informant is named on her death certificate. She died of pulmonary tuberculosis which she had had for “8 or 10 years.” Her father was Thosten Sondrol and her mother was unknown. She was buried at “Layman’s.”

He was of medium height and build with blue eyes and dark hair.

In the 1930 census, he and his wife and three children lived in Kerkhoven Twp, Swift County. Their farm is listed on the same census page as Selmer Framstad (#15995).

In the 1920 census, he is 33 year-old Balder Flaten, a farmer in Gennessee Twp, Kandiyohi County, Minnesota. The household consists of himself, Alta, 26, Wiliam, 3 months, Charles, apparently also 3 months, and Walter, Balder’s brother.

In the 1930 census, Balder is a boilermaker for a steam railroad shop and he and his family live in Willmar in a house on Litchfield Avenue that he is renting. The family consists of Balder, 44, Alta, 36, William B, 13, Charles B, 10, Leo G, 9, Anna M, 7, Calvin C, 5, Helen M, 3, Elroy J, 1, and Raymond H, 4 months.

In the 1940 census, he was a WPA laborer living on a farm in Gennessee Twp, Kandiyohi County.

According to his death certificate, for which his wife Alta was the informant, Balder was a WPA worker. He died of myocarditis brought on by the flu. He died in Fahlun Twp but he was a resident of Gennessee Twp.

He registered for the draft in Minneapolis on June 5, 1917. At that time he lived at 2411 11th Avenue South in Minneapolis. He was self-employed with a grocery business at 910 East 24th Street. He was married with a wife and child and claimed their dependancy as grounds for exemption from the draft. He was tall and slender with blue eyes and light hair.

In the 1930 census, he and his family live at 4101 41st Avenue South in Minneapolis. He has a grocery store.

In 1937, he was licensed to sell “lunch, groceries, soft drinks and confectionery” at 2507 East 38th Street in Minneapolis.

In the 1940 census, he and his wife and four children still lived at 4101 41st Avenue in south Minneapolis. He was a the manager of a confectionery.

He was the informant for his brother Walter’s death certificate. At that time, Nordahl lived at 4101 41st Avenue S.

According to Mark, Nordahl owned the building his store was in and rented out several stores in the building to others.

In the 1910 census, she (as Mabel Flaten) and her brother Nordahl Flaten are living with their sister Nellie Pedersen (husband Christopher b. ca 1873) and her family in Minneapolis. Mabel is shown as 22 years old and is a cutter in a knitting works.

Mabel died from typhoid fever which had produced internal hemorrhaging as well as pneumonia. She lived at 2311 E 32nd Street in Minneapolis and was employed as a “cutter.”

A different Mabel Flaten, a few years older and perhaps a cousin, married a Walter G Lee in Renville County on 11 Sept 1912.

This is the cemetery on the northeast corner of Lake Street and Cedar Avenue. It is the oldest cemetery in Minneapolis and is now called the Minneapolis Pioneers and Soldiers Memorial Cemetery. Minneapolis’s poorest citzens were buried in unmarked mass graves in Section H.

Olof applied for a passport in December of 1920. He needed it for a planned trip to Norway to see his parents on December 30th. At that time, he was an S C 1 C in the U.S. Navy, stationed at the Charlestown Navy Yard in Massachusetts. He wanted his new passport to be sent to him, special delivery, at the U.S.S. Luce, #99, at the Charlestown Navy Yard. Olof claims that he emigrated to the U.S. on August 7, 1914, departing from Christiania, and spent 6 uninterrupted years in Minneapolis and in the U.S. Navy. He became a naturalized citizen in Boston on December 6, 1920.

In the 1924 Boston, Massachusetts, city directory, he was Olaf O Sondrol, U.S. Navy, residing at 2½ Mt Vernon Chsn.

In the 1925 Boston directory, he was a fish cutter living at 26A Concord Chsn.

In the 1926 and 1927 Boston directories, he was a carpenter living at 26A Concord Chsn.

The 1928 Boston directory says that he has “removed to Somv.”

In the 1929 Somerville, Massachusetts, city directory, he was a cook. He and Ruth live at 8 Hancock.

May be the Olaf O. Sondrol who was a cook on a U.S. Coast Guard vessel at the time of the 1930 census. He was married. In the census, he is stationed at Boston.

In the 1933 Somerville city directory, the entry for Olaf is “rem to Winthrop.”

In the 1935 Gloucester, Massachusetts, city directory, he was with the U S Coast Guard. He and Ruth lived at 9 Highland Place.

In the 1936 Mobile, Alabama, city directory, Olaf and Ruth live at 300 Conti, apartment 4. Olaf is a “chf guard.”

In the 1936 Gulfport, Mississippi, he and Ruth lived at 1612 19th Avenue. He was with the U S Coast Guard.

In the 1956 and 1958 and 1960 Lawrence, Massachusetts, city directories, Olof and Ruth live at 224 Hampshire.

Probably the Iver Sondrol, roomer, living in Minneapolis in the 1930 census. He was 21 years old and working as a salesman for a hardware company. He had come to the U. S. in 1926. Living with him, also a roomer, was 20 year-old Knute Sondrol who had come to the U. S. in 1924. Knute was a shipping clerk for a mail order company. Together, the two young men lived at the house of the spinster sisters Mildred and Lillian Skattos at 3936 25th Avenue South.

In the 1934 Minneapolis city directory, Iver and Evelyn live at 639 E 17th, apartment 4. Iver is still a clerk with Janney Sample Hill.

In the 1939 and 1941 and 1942 Cedar Rapids, Iowa, city directories, Iver and Evelyn live at 2012 Bever Ave SE. Iver is a salesman.

In the 1950 and 1951 Cedar Rapids directories, Iver is a salesman. He and Evelyn live at 2056 Eastern Boulevard SE.

In the 1954 and 1956 and 1957 and 1958 Cedar Rapids directories, he and Evelyn still live at 2056 Eastern Boulevard SE. He owns Sondrol’s Variety and Hardware at 1507 1st Avenue E.

Iver O. Sondrol, 94, of 322 Liberty Drive SE, Cedar Rapids, died Sunday, Jan. 12, 2003, at St. Luke's Hospital after a brief illness.

Services are 3 p.m. today at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Burial will be at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Cedar Memorial Funeral Home, Cedar Rapids, is handling the arrangements.

Mr. Sondrol was born July 4, 1908, in Vang, Valdres, Norway, the son of Ole and Gertrude Sondrol. He married Evelyn June 30, 1934, in Minneapolis.

He attended high school in Norway and at age 17 immigrated to the United States, arriving at Milaca, Minn., in March 1926. As a young man he worked on farms and in small businesses in Minnesota before moving to Minneapolis in 1927, where he met his wife. In 1933, he returned to Norway to visit his brothers and sisters, his mother and his ailing father.

In working to attain U.S. citizenship, he took night classes at the University of Minnesota. He began his career working for Janney-Semple-Hill, a hardware wholesale business, and continued that career as a hardware salesman on the road until 1952.

For 22 years, he and his wife owned and operated Sondrol's Variety & Hardware, Cedar Rapids. During that time, he was active in his church, community and in organizations such as the Sons of Norway.

Survivors include his wife; his children, Trudy Wasson of Eden Prairie, Minn., Hal Sondrol of Cedar Rapids and Iver Sondrol Jr. of Muscatine; six grandchildren, one of whom preceded him in death; and four great-grandchildren.

Iver married Evelyn Margrethe OAS on 30 Jun 1934 in Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota. Evelyn (daughter of Oscar Michelsen OAS and Emma BAKKE) was born on 14 Dec 1910 in Hennepin County, Minnesota; died on 5 Sep 2007 in Cedar Rapids, Linn County, Iowa. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

In the 1930 city directory, he was a stockman for Sears. He and Iver still lived at 3936 25th Avenue S.

In the 1943 La Crosse city directory, he and Pearle lived at 111 S 9th, apartment 101. Knute was a salesman, Pearle was a clerk for the National Youth Administration.

Raymond “LuVerne” Sondrol, 95, of Sunburg, Minnesota passed away Thursday morning, July 22, 2021 at Bethesda Grand in Willmar.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 27, at Hope Lutheran Church in Sunburg.  Interment will be at West Norway Lake Lutheran Cemetery.  Visitation is from 6-8 p.m. Monday, July 26, at Hope Lutheran Church and continued for one hour prior to the service.  

LuVerne was born May 25, 1926, on the family farm near Sunburg, the son of Ole and Alma (Lansverk) Sondrol.  He grew up and received his education in the Sunburg community and continued to work on the family farm.  
May 10, 1952, LuVerne was married to Vivian Lucille Adolphsen and they made their home on the family farm.
 
LuVerne worked hard as a farmer and as a salesman for Security Seed Corn, Archer Oil and President Homes.  He co-owned and operated the Glacial Trail Supper Club and later the Lake Reno Inn.  LuVerne also owned and operated Sondrol Excavating.  He was a active member of Hope Lutheran Church and the National Farmers Organization (NFO).  LuVerne was a volunteer for the Civil Air Patrol and a member of the Elk’s Lodge, Eagle’s Club and the American Legion Post.  He was a proud supporter of Ducks Unlimited, Pheasants Forever, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, National Wild Turkey Federation and the Minnesota Deer Hunters Association.  His hobbies included hunting, fishing, golfing, aviation and traveling, especially throughout the United States, Mexico and Europe.

He is survived by his four children: Janice (and Charles) Nichols of Grove City, Karen (and Charles) Huseby of Kerkhoven, Steven (and Jeanne) Sondrol of Murdock and Kathy (and Tim) Hanson of Sunburg; 14 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; one sister-in-law, Audrey Sondrol of Sunburg and his special friend, Carolyn Harris of Cottage Grove, besides other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Vivian in 2012; one granddaughter, Andrea Hanson; two sisters, Doris Sventek and Eleanor Halgrimson and two brothers, Clifford Sondrol and Russell Sondrol.

Flaten, Leo G. age 97, of Minneapolis died Friday, August 24, 2018. He was born at the family farm on Lake Elizabeth in Atwater, MN on March 9, 1921 and spent his early childhood years in Willmar and Atwater, MN. During WWII he served in the Army of the United States from August 26, 1942 through December 1, 1946 spending 2 1/2 years in England and France. Following discharge, he attended Macalester College for two years before transferring to the University of Minnesota where he received his B.S. degree in Economics in March, 1949. He was employed for 36 years by the Commerce Department of the State of Minnesota, completing his career in the position of Chief Examiner. He was an active member of Bethlehem Baptist Church since 1950. He enjoyed reading, especially history books and researching family genealogy with his niece, Jane. He lived in his home until the time of his death. He passed into eternity peacefully in the Emergency Room of Fairview Southdale Hospital surrounded by his family. Leo is survived by his daughter, Janet (Thomas) Sass, son, David Flaten and grandchildren, Jonathan (Emily) Sass, Laura Sass and Christina (Ethan) Ongstad and other relatives and friends. A memorial service will be held at Bethlehem Baptist Church, 720 13th Avenue South in Minneapolis Thursday, August 30th at 10:30 a.m. with visitation one hour prior to the service. Elroy "Roy" J. Flaten age 85, of rural Atwater, died Thursday morning, July 24, at the Fairview University Hospital in Minneapolis.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Tuesday, July 29, at Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church in Willmar. Military Honor Guard will be provided by the Austin F. Hanscom American Legion Post #167 of Willmar. Visitation will be from 5-7 P.M. on Monday, July 28, at Peterson Brothers Funeral Home in Willmar and one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday.  In lieu of flowers, memorials to Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church in Willmar are preferred.

Elroy "Roy" J. Flaten was born on August 21, 1928, in Willmar, Minnesota, the son of Balder and Alta (Peterson) Flaten.  He grew up in Atwater, graduating from Atwater High School in 1945 and continuing his education at Macalester College graduating in 1949 with a degree in Mathematics.  He attended graduate school at the University of Minnesota until 1950 and then began teaching math in Wabasso. 

On October 20, 1951, Roy was married to Margaret "Marge" A. Mielke.  They lived in Denver Colorado where Roy served in the U.S. Army at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal.  Later they moved to West St. Paul, Minnesota where Roy was employed for 32 years with the 3M Company.  He retired in 1988 and moved to Lake Elizabeth near Atwater.  He was an active member of Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church and a volunteer for the Kandiyohi County Economic Development Commission.  Roy was an avid reader, a master gardener and enjoyed woodworking.

He is survived by his loving wife, Marge of rural Atwater; four daughters, Gretchen (and Brad) Biggerstaff of Puyallup, WA., Nan Flaten of Dallas, TX., Erika Flaten of Hastings, MN., and Jennifer (and Brian) Shaul of Colorado Springs, CO; four grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.  Also surviving is one brother, Leo Flaten of Minneapolis and one sister, Helen Diers of Eagan, besides other relatives and friends.

Nordahl T. Flaten Jr., age 88, of Burnsville, went home to heaven on October 19th . Nord is survived by his wife Mertha; his children Sonja (Fred) and Mark (Sharon), four grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Nord was born in Minneapolis and graduated from Roosevelt High in January 1943. After graduation he was inducted into the US Army and was trained for both the infantry and aviation training. In early 1945 he was shipped to Europe where he fought in the battle of the Ruhr Pocket and Drabenderhoe where he received the Bronze Star. In April 1945 his division liberated the German concentration camp at Flossenburg, Germany where two weeks earlier the Christian pastor Dietrich Bonhoeffer had been put to death by the Nazi regime by hanging. Upon the end of the war in Europe his division was deployed to Japan for the invasion of Japan and was part of the occupation forces.

Nord was a gifted creative engineer who could imagine and build most anything. During his career he was awarded several patents. He enjoyed and spent many hours on his farm in southeastern Minnesota. He also loved listening to pipe organ music on his stereo. He will be deeply missed by his wife and family.

BROOTEN — Raymond O. Shelstad, 91, of Brooten, died Wednesday at the Glacial Ridge Hospital in Glenwood.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Sunburg Free Lutheran Church in Sunburg. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Memorials to the Sunburg Free Lutheran Cemetery Association are preferred.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Sunburg Funeral Home in Sunburg and for one hour prior to the service Tuesday at the church.

Raymond was born Dec. 8, 1918, in Benson, the son of Oscar and Ruby (Hollen) Sjelstad. He was baptized and confirmed at Spring Creek Lutheran Church of Murdock and attended District 66 school in Swift County.

Raymond was united in marriage to Phyllis Anderson on March 19, 1945. They lived and farmed in the Sunburg area until 1985, when he retired from farming but remained on the farm until 2002. In 2002, Raymond sold the farm to his stepson and wife, Charles and Barb Anderson, and moved into the Bon-Val apartments in Brooten. He remained there until his death.

Raymond had a passion for farming. He enjoyed attending auctions and visiting with his friends and family.

He is survived by his brother, Milton (and Elaine) Sjelstad of Sunburg; one stepson, Charles (and Barb) Anderson of Sunburg; four grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; besides other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Phyllis in 1996; one sister; one brother-in-law; one niece and one nephew.

Trudy Wasson (Sondrol)??Age 71, born May 25, 1938, in Minneapolis. Died December 28, 2009, at Methodist Hospital, St. Louis Park, MN from complications following heart surgery. Survived by husband, Boyd, daughter Julie (Pete) Baird, Plainfield, IL, sons Mark, Seattle, WA, and Eric (Janine), Cedar Rapids, IA. Grandchildren Duncan and Reilly Baird, and Justin and Kristin Wasson. Also her brothers Harold, Cedar Rapids, IA, and Iver, Jr. (Karen) Phoenix, AZ. Preceded in death by her parents Iver and Evelyn (Oas) Sondrol and her son, Tom.??Trudy was raised and completed high school in Cedar Rapids. While attending Iowa State University, she met and married Boyd, March 1, 1959. The next few years were busy with the arrival of three of her four children, all the while she ran a thriving dressmaking business from her home so she could be at home to raise her kids and help her husband through college.??After a trip to Norway, Trudy decided to learn Rosemaling (a decorative form of Norwegian oil painting) so that she could paint "something" for her Norwegian parents. Trudy not only learned, but excelled, winning the prestigious Vesterheim Gold Medal. She went on to author two books, numerous pattern designs, and teach this beautiful art form all across the country. Several of her pieces are in the museum.??In the 1980's, the real estate business beckoned. She became an agent, spending most of her 21 year career at Re/Max Results in Eden Prairie. Though a transplant to the area, she soon established herself as a dominant force in the market through unwavering determination and dedication to her clients. If Trudy was your realtor, you were taken care of...all the way.??In the early 2000's, Trudy took up quilting as a way to unwind from real estate. But as was her nature, dabbling, it was not. She began entering the Paducah quilt show, the grand-daddy of them all. She's had seven quilts in the show, winning 1st place for Traditional Wall two years back. Two of her quilts are now part of the National Quilt Museum's collection. She began Generations Quilt Patterns with her daughter in 2006 and has been designing ever since.??Memorial Service 11am Tuesday, January 5, with visitation one hour before at Faith Presbyterian Church, 12007 Excelsior Blvd., Minnetonka, MN.
