    In the 1930 census, he was a pastor in Eau Claire. His children were Elaine J, 8, and Elmer S. Jr., 6.

    He was a pastor in Milwaukee at the time of the 1940 census. The children at home at that time weree Elaine (absent) 17, Elmer Jr., 16, and John G., 2.

    At the time of his daughter Elaine’s engagement to Feroe, he was “senior pastor-elect” of Central Lutheran Church in Minneapolis.

    The September, 1948, alumni magazine notes: “Another 25th anniversary was that of Dr. Elmer Hjortland's ordination to the ministry. On Sunday, June 20, members of Central Lutheran church in Minneapolis honored Mr. and Mrs. Hjortland (Mildred Ellingboe, '23) at a reception. The Hjortlands have spent the three summer months touring the European countries.”

    According to the November, 1959, alumni magazine: “Elmer I. {sic} Hjortland, pastor of United Church, Oak Park, Illinois, is one of two new members who have been elected to the board of directors of Lutheran World Relief for a two-year term. Pastor Hjortland is the former pastor of Central Lutheran church in Minneapolis. His wife is the former Mildred Ellingboe, '23.”

    Elmer married Mildred Caroline ELLINGBOE on 13 Sep 1921 in Rice County, Minnesota.     She lived in Milwaukee at the time of her marriage to Feroe. That is contradicted by an article in the Star on December 24, 1944, which announced the couple’s engagement. In that article, she is said to “make her home with her uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. J. L Ellingboe, Richfield station.”

    In a family history of her grandparents: “In 1973 a granddaughter of John’s, Elaine Hjortland Feroe and her family moved to Northfield where she is on the staff of St. John’s Lutheran Church.”

    She lived in Northfield at the time of her son Mark’s death.

    Elaine died on November 10, 2022 at the Northfield Care Center.

    She was born April 6, 1922 in Minneapolis, MN to Elmer S. and Mildred Hjortland. Elaine spent her early years in Eau Claire and Milwaukee WI, where her father served as a Lutheran pastor. She attended St. Olaf College, graduating in 1943 in Speech Communications. She met her husband, Pastor Jennings Feroe in 1943 while playing ping pong at Lake Geneva Bible Camp, where Jennings had brought members of his congregation from Long Lake, IL.

    They were married on January 21, 1945 in Milwaukee. After the end of WWII they moved to Mankato, MN where Jennings accepted a call to Bethlehem Lutheran Church. After 28 years of shared ministry in Mankato, they moved to Northfield, MN when Jennings took a job in the Development Office at St. Olaf College. During her years in Northfield, Elaine worked at St. Olaf College and St. John’s Lutheran Church. A competitive spirit, she enjoyed golfing for many years and played bridge into her 90’s. She was known for her generous gift giving, delivering a humorous speech, and getting things done-whether in the family, as a pastor’s wife or in various leadership roles over her lifetime.

    She and Jennings moved to the Northfield Retirement Center in 2002 and enjoyed being active members of this special community. The family wishes to thank the NRC staff and her friends for their support and care over the many years.

    She was preceded in death by her husband, son Mark, brothers Bud and John and great granddaughter Serenity. She is survived by her children Mary (Ted) Hovey of Roseville, Bruce (Kathy) Feroe of Hoyt Lakes , Lois (Roger) Tinker of Coon Rapids and Ellen (Rick) Hedrick of St. Paul ; 6 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren.

    Elaine married Jennings Gotfred FEROE on 21 Jan 1945 in Wisconsin.     John Gordon Hjortland, 78, of Northfield and a former Oak Park resident, died peacefully at the Care Center of the Northfield Retirement Community.

    Born on Feb. 27, 1938, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, he was adopted by Elmer and Mildred (Ellingboe) Hjortland as an infant. Growing up, he lived in Milwaukee, Minneapolis, Chicago, and Oak Park, graduating from Oak Park and River Forest High School with the class of 1956. John furthered his education at St. Olaf College.

    He later returned to Chicago to work for Red Owl Foods and went on to work as a respiratory therapist for 37 years, most of this time spent at St. Luke's Presbyterian and Rush Memorial Hospital in Chicago. He retired in 2000.

    A former member of Oak Park's United Lutheran Church where he lived and worked as the church caretaker for 15 years, he enjoyed singing in the church choir and cherished the time he spent with his family and friends, especially going fishing with his nephew.

    John Hjortland is survived by his sister, Elaine Feroe; his nephews, Bruce (Kathy) Feroe and David (Debra) Hjortland; his nieces, Lois (Roger) Tinker and Mary (Ted) Hovey; his sister-in-law, Mona Hjortland Lund; six great-nieces; and other relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Mildred (Ellingboe) Hjortland, and his siblings, Elmer Jr. "Bud" and Beverly Rasmusson. 

    Obituary for John G. Hjortland
    John Gordon Hjortland was born on February 27, 1938, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. As an infant he was adopted by Elmer and Mildred (Ellingboe) Hjortland. John was baptized at Ascension Lutheran Church in Milwaukee, WI and confirmed in his faith at Central Lutheran Church in Minneapolis.

    Growing up John lived in Milwaukee, Minneapolis and lastly Chicago, where John graduated from Oak Park River Forest High School with the class of 1956. John furthered his education at St. Olaf College. He later returned to Chicago to work for Red Owl Foods. John went on to work as a respiratory therapist for 37 years, most of this time was spent at St. Luke’s Presbyterian and Rush Memorial Hospital in Chicago, retiring in 2000. Following retirement John remained in the Chicago area until moving to Northfield in 2010.

    John was a former member of United Lutheran Church in Oak Park, Illinois, where he lived and worked as the church caretaker for 15 years. He was a big Chicago sports fan, he especially enjoyed following the Chicago Cubs. John enjoyed singing in the church choir. He was an avid car fan as he was race car driver for some time driving. A 57’ Chevy was his favorite. He cherished the time spent with his family and friends, especially going fishing with his nephew.

    John is survived by his sister Elaine Feroe of Northfield; nephews: Bruce (Kathy) Feroe of Hoyt Lakes, David (Debra) Hjortland of North Oaks, MN; nieces: Lois (Roger) Tinker of Coon Rapids and Mary (Ted) Hovey of Roseville; sister-in-law, Mona Hjortland Lund of Northwood, ND; and 6 great nieces, other relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, siblings: Elmer Jr. “Bud” and Beverly Rasmusson.

    On Tuesday Evening, May 17, 2016, John passed away peacefully at the Care Center of the Northfield Retirement Community reaching the age of 78.

    His obit says that “he was baptized and confirmed at Bethlehem Lutheran Church and graduated from Mankato High School in 1965. He attended Waldorf College for 2 years and received his Bachelors Degree from Mankato State College. Over the years Mark lived in various communities in Minnesota and Northern Iowa, most recently in South St. Paul.”
