Her maiden name is spelled “Schruth” in the Minnesota death index for Lloyd. It is also “Schruth” in the birth records for her two sons as recorded in Wisconsin Births and Christenings.

According to her marriage record, her parents were John F. Schruth and Marie T. Markes.

The 1898 birth date is on his WWI draft registration card. There was a William M. Engel born in Pepin County on 30 Dec 1898. Thus, either the baby was unnamed at the time his birth was registered and his father’s name was used instead or else the baby was renamed after the time his birth was registered with the county and state.

In the draft registration, dated September 11, 1918, in Pepin, Stanley claimed to be a laborer at a saw mill run by a J. P. Brootels. He lists his closest relative as his mother, Mrs. Amelia Engel. Stanley is described as of medium height and build with brown eyes and brown hair.

Living at home in the 1920 census. He was a commercial fisherman.

In the 1930 and 1940 censuses, Stanley and his family live in a house he owns on First Street in the village of Pepin. Stanley is a commercial fisherman. The 1940 census has Stanley as a high school graduate and his wife as having had 1 year of high school.

His gravestone, one separate from the larger stone that he shares with Ruby, shows his as Pvt Stanley D Engel, of the STU ARMY TNG CORPS in World War I.

In the 1940 census, as Engels, Lloyd, Edna, and Bruce live in Pepin. Lloyd is still a commercial fisherman. Living with the family is a boarder, Everett Waitz. Lloyd’s parents, William and Amelia, live next door.

Laurel Roberta Marcks, 66, Pepin, died Friday, Feb. 26, 1999, at her home.

The daughter of Stanley and Ruby (Hawkins) Engel, she was born Oct. 6, 1932, in Pepin. She graduated in 1950 from Pepin High School, worked for a bank in St. Paul and later was a secretary for E.J. Longyear Co.

She married Ronald Marcks Feb. 25, 1952, in Winona, Minn., and they lived in Pepin. A lifelong member of United Methodist Church in Pepin, she enjoyed crafts and painting.

Surviving are: her husband; one daughter, Rhonda (Mark) Diers of Eau Claire; one son, Ross (Erin) of Hager City; three grandchildren; one brother, James (Nancy) Engel of Pepin; and one sister, Rosa Larson of Rochester, Minn.

Funeral was to be Tuesday at United Methodist Church, Pepin, with the Revs. Frederik Schultz and Frank Kuhlman officiating. Spring burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Pepin. Friends were to call for one hour before the service Tuesday at the church.

Goodrich Funeral Home, Durand, is in charge of arrangements.

James Stanley Engel, 78, of Pepin, died Sunday, May 27, at Mayo Clinic Health System in Eau Claire. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday, June 1, at the United Methodist Church in Pepin. Burial with military rites will be at Oakwood Cemetery in Pepin. Friends may call 1 hour prior to services at the church on Friday. James Stanley Engel (78) of Pepin, died Sunday, May 27, 2012 at Mayo Clinic Health System in Eau Claire. He was born April 8, 1934 at their home on Front Street in Pepin, WI; son of Stanley and Ruby Hawkins Engel. He graduated from Pepin High School. Following school, Jim proudly served in the United States Army during the Korean War. On January 25, 1958 he married Nancy Rundhammer in Cresco, IA. They spent their entire married life of 54 years in Pepin. Jim worked as a tow boat pilot for many years until his retirement in 1983. He had a great passion for hunting, fishing and the outdoors. Jim will be greatly missed by his family and by his beloved black lab, Kayla, who was his shadow.
