15. | Maria Sophia (Sophie) LIND (6.Lars3, 2.Christofer2, 1.Magdalena1) was born on 26 Apr 1848 in Hägghult, Hova, Skaraborgs län, Sweden; was christened on 27 Apr 1848 in Hova, Västergötland, Skaraborgs län, Sweden. Notes:
According to the 1900 census, she had borne 7 children, 3 still living. She came to this country in 1881. The family was living in Pine Creek Township, Morrison County, at the time of the 1900 census.
In the 1910 census, only Hugo is still living at home with her in Little Falls. In that census she is shown as having had only 3 children, all 3 still living. Her name in the census is Sophia Peterson. She has no occupation.
Her property was foreclosed upon in 1914. It’s probable that that had some bearing on she and her children moving to Canada.
A family history of Hugo Peterson incorrectly assigns a fourth child to Aleck and Sophie, a so-called Anna Peterson, born and died in Minneapolis and married to a “Mr. Likevold.” It appears that the author of the family history confused Olga with this non-existent sister.
She is not the “Mrs. Sophia Peterson” who died in Morrison County in 1939. That was a younger woman, the widow of a Gust Peterson.
She may have died in Canada.
A brief mention in the 10 Dec 1920 edition of the Little Falls Herald:
Mrs. S Liekvall and children and Mrs. Liekvall’s mother, Mrs. Sophia Peterson, are here to spend the winter and living on Eighth street northwest. They came here from Nokomis, Canada.
Maria married Erich (Aleck) LARSON PETERSON about 1880 in Stockholm, Sweden. Erich (son of Lars PETERSON) was born in 1845 in Sweden; died on 2 Oct 1900 in Little Falls, Morrison County, Minnesota; was buried on 4 Oct 1900 in Oakland Cemetery, Little Falls, Morrison County, Minnesota. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
Children:
- 31. Olga PETERSON was born in Jul 1885 in New York; died on 18 May 1947 in Morrison County, Minnesota; was buried in Oakland Cemetery, Little Falls, Morrison County, Minnesota.
- 32. Hugo Alex PETERSON was born in Jul 1887 in New York; died on 27 Sep 1938 in Bemidji, Beltrami County, Minnesota; was buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Bemidji, Beltrami County, Minnesota.

18. | Anna Charlotta LIND (6.Lars3, 2.Christofer2, 1.Magdalena1) was born on 22 Apr 1861 in Hova, Västergötland, Skaraborgs län, Sweden; was christened on 23 Apr 1861 in Hova, Västergötland, Skaraborgs län, Sweden; died on 17 Feb 1948 in Sioux City, Woodbury County, Iowa. Other Events and Attributes:
Notes:
She is not the Anna Anderson who died in Morrison County on 24 Oct 1944 (1944-MN-008505).
Jan Johansson says that Emibas has her getting permission to leave Sweden (from Gustafsberg, Värmdö, Stockholms län (Uppland)) on 26 April 1882 and actually leaving the country for New York on 12 May 1882. She is shown as unmarried. She and her two daughters, Anna and Astrid, left Sweden the second time on 25 June 1886. The embarkation point was Göteborg both times.
In the 1905 state census, she and her family lived in Pike Creek Twp next to Sophia Peterson and her two children. Still living at home with Anna was Esther, 20, a domestic. The remainder of the children must have been listed on the back of the page, on a page that is missing, or were otherwise unrecorded.
The 1900 census reports that she had borne 8 children, all 8 still living. The 1910 census said only 7 still living. Harry, Herman, and Ethel were listed at home in 1910.
She was living in Minneapolis with her daughter Anna and Anna’s husband, as well as her daughter Ethel, at the time of the 1920 census.
Anna is living in Pike Creek Twp, Morrison County, in the 1930 census. Her widowed daughter Anna McCollem is living with her. Neither woman has an occupation.
Died:
At the home of her daughter, Mrs. Olaf Jackson (Ethel). (Obit from the Little Falls Daily Transcript, 18 Feb 1948, cited in TempestCHICK’s Jackson-Tracy Family Tree.)
Anna married Alfred ANDERSON on 22 Jul 1884 in New York, New York. Alfred was born on 13 Dec 1859 in Skaraborgs län, Sweden; died in Feb 1900 in Pike Creek Twp, Morrison County, Minnesota. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

21. | Emelie/Emmeli Wilhelmina (Emma) LUNDBERG (7.Maja3, 2.Christofer2, 1.Magdalena1) was born on 20 Oct 1843 in Rydö, Torup, Småland, Hallands län, Sweden; was christened on 29 Oct 1843 in Torup, Hallands län, Sweden; died on 19 May 1903 in Superior, Douglas County, Wisconsin; was buried on 28 Jun 1939 in Crystal Lake Cemetery, Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota. Other Events and Attributes:
- Baptism: 29 Oct 1843, Torup, Hallands län, Sweden
Notes:
Emma Wilhelmina in her birth record in the Torup church records.
Terry says: Emma lived near Kånna in Sweden and at one time lived in town there with Salomon. At the time that she emigrated, they had been living at farm Berghem Vastergarden in Kånna Parish, Kronoberg län, Småland, South Sweden. (From the Household Exam records, she had moved the family from Andersgarden to Westregarden in 1879.)
The two women with whom Karl Oskar and Johan Alfred are shown as living with in the 1882-1891 Kånna Household Examination, Ingrid Kajsa Erlandsdatter (b. 1834) and Caroline Erlandsdatter (b. 1844), are also living in the Grönlund apartment in Berghem Westregard in the 1877-1881 Household Examination.
Cora said that Al had told her that Emma was a genteel lady, used to servants. She was supposedly part French and Al was proud of this. It’s unlikely that the servants part is true. The French part certainly isn’t.
From Jan in June of 2005: The info I have is that the Lundberg/ Lind families were what is called "Travellers" - kind of like Gypsies. The Travellers went all over Europe, USA and Canada. They say they are not Gypsies. They moved around a lot, some of them were quite violent. Some arrested for theft and one was listed as beaten to death. Some did own property in Sweden but they were not well treated, maybe because of their violent nature and reputation? If you search on the internet , you will find several websites that tell you about the "Roma people." It seems each country calls them a different name. In Sweden they called them "Travellers."
“Got her moving papers May 16, 1881.”

Frank, 35, “Anna”, 37, Carl, 16, Ida, 14, and Sandy, 4, were in Cannon Falls in the 1885 Minnesota state census.
Emelie and Frank were still in Cannon Falls in 1895 according to entries in the 1895 Minnesota state census. The family consisted of Frank, 43, a tinner born in Sweden; Mrs. F, 42, born in Sweden; Oscar Fogelquist, 19, a common laborer born in Sweden; and Emil Fogelquist, 14, born in Minnesota.
The 1900 census said that she had 13 children, 7 of whom were living. We can identify only 6 still living at that time so either the 7 is simply incorrect or there is another child alive in 1900 that we don’t know about.
From Carl Johan’s sources, Emelie’s maternal haplogroup may be J1b3a.

The 1871-1876 Kånna household examination suggests that Carl and Britta came to Ljunga, or at least Berghem Andersgård, on October 2, 1874, two months and twenty days before they were married.
They lived near or with his sister Emelie and family on Andersgård.
The Anbytartforum confirms this, saying: “Carl Gustaf came in December 1873 to Kånna from the parish of Thorup. He then moved in with his brother Carl Oscar at the Berget cottage under {near?} Kvänjarp. In October of 1874, he moved with his bride-to-be Britta Maria of the Björkelund cottage under {to? in?} Berghem Andersgård. They married that December. In October of 1877 they moved to Berget cottage under {in?} Berghem south farm. Then on July 17, 1881, the family emigrated to America.” (This may have been the date on which they were permitted to leave and actually left Sweden sometime in September.)
Lived in Kånna, a small town northwest of Södra Ljunga, until they emigrated. Left Sweden in September, 1881, with the destination of Red Wing, Minnesota. Terry says: They left from Malmo, Sweden on the Ship ALEXANDRA, arriving at Grimsby, England (east coast) taking the train to Liverpool. I have a picture of this ship. It never made it back to Sweden as it sunk in a major storm on the return trip to Sweden. Captain Johnson and crew probably all drowned but I never found about that yet. I have all the ship's crews names and home towns. The name of the ship owner was the South Sweden Steamship Company of Malmo, Sweden, which is on the south tip of Sweden directly across the Strait from Copenhagen in Denmark so there probably were Danish passengers too?
The name of the shipping carrier was the INMAN Line with tickets to New York destined for RED WING, MINNESOTA. The big ships from Liverpool were usually called CITY of xxx......... but I have not found the exact ship name they were on yet as some of these ships had six hundred people on them and there were many ships each day to New York. Annerstad is near to Kånna and South Ljunga in Kronoberg län, SMALAND, Sweden.
Britta, Tilda, and baby Emma (but, apparently, not Charley) arrived in New York from Liverpool on October 14, 1881, on the City of Paris which had sailed from the Swedish port of Malmö. The stated destination of the three was Red Wing, Minnesota. Carl Gustaf may have gone ahead earlier and then sent for his wife and children. All four are shown as leaving the Berghem Södregård parish at Kånna in 1881.
According to Terry, Charley, a 31 year-old tinsmith traveled from Glasgow to New York on the Devonia, arriving June 7, 1881.
In an 1885 census, the family was living in Cannon Falls Twp. The family consisted of Charles Lundberg, 35, Maria, 40, Mathilda M., 9, Nanny C., 6, Laurina, 4, and Alfred, 1.
In the 1895 Minnesota state census, the family lives in Athens Twp, Isanti County. They had been there for a year-and-a-half.
In the 1900 U.S. census, the family was living in East Barton, Pierce County, North Dakota. The family consisted of Carl, 50, Maria, 54, Walter, 18, and Ida, 14. Both children had been born in Minnesota. Carl is a farmer, Walter a farm laborer, and Ida a servant. Carl and Maria came to the U.S. in 1881. Maria has had 8 children, 5 still living. Carl and Maria had been married for 22 years.
He moved to Naicam, Saskatchewan, Canada, with his second wife. But at the time of the 1910 U.S. census, he and Hannah were living in Milaca Township not too far from the John Quaid family.
Not listed in the 1911 Canadian census.
In the 1916 census, he and Hanna lived in Lake Lenore. He and Hanna came to Canada in 1911. Charles became a Canadia citizen in 1914, Hanna was still an American citizen. They were both Protestants.
As Jan found, Charey and Hannah lived in Preeceville Twp, Saskatchewan, in Canada’s 1921 census. They lived alone and were still engaged in farming. They still claimed, respectively, Swedish and Danish citizenship. Both claimed to be Lutherans.
Terry says: He probably never went to school since his land records in CANADA are marked by an " X" but even that I do not know for sure since he may have been able to write in Swedish and not in English.
Terry says: the LUNDBERGS in Sweden always used that name which is very unusual as most Swedes used Johansson, Svensson, Pederson, etc. and changed their name every generation. I have most of the Swedish records but can not find them in the USA; maybe they became Carlssons, Johnson, Anderson, etc. and thus so common a name it is hard to trace them in the USA....??

25. | Johan August (Gus) LUNDBERG (7.Maja3, 2.Christofer2, 1.Magdalena1) was born on 8 Jun 1852 in Rydö, Torup, Småland, Hallands län, Sweden; died on 14 Sep 1939 in Naicam, Saskatchewan, Canada; was buried on 17 Sep 1939 in Immanuel Lutheran Church Cemetery, Naicam, Saskatchewan, Canada. Other Events and Attributes:
- Baptism: 8 Jun 1852, Torup, Hallands län, Sweden
Notes:
Had 6 kids. Also emigrated to North America.
According to the parish register of Långaryd, 1881-1890, Johan August was 1/24 part owner of Gässlingabo farm. They had moved to Långaryd from Torup in 1881. Johan was found guilty of theft in 1882.
There is also a record of Johan August as half owner of Segelsbo farm in Långaryd. The family (less Emma, who emigrated in April of 1889) moved to Södra Hestra parish on October 7, 1890. There is a suggestion that Johan August was found guilty of theft again on March 5th of some year.
In the 1890 Swedish census, according to one of Terry’s researchers, the family was living in Kindhult, Södra Hestra parish, Jönköping län. Terry believes that Johan August owned the Kindhult farm.
The Södra Hestra Household Examination for 1891-1897 shows the family living on Kindhult Södra until October of 1894 at which point they moved to Spjuthult Nestra, still in Södra Hestra. They (Gus, Albertina, Karl Johan, Laurentia, and Mathilda Charlotta) emigrated to North Amerika in 1896.
Johan August Lundberg, född 1852-06-08 i Rydö, Torup N. Hemmansägare
i Sandshult, Torup N. Långaryd N 1882-?. (f).
The 1867-1876 Torup Household Examination shows that Johan August left for Transhult in 1875.
Johan August, age 44, his wife Albertina, 45, and their three youngest children, Carl, 19, Laurentia, 17, and Matilda, 14, arrived in the U. S. in the port of Boston, on May 17, 1896, on the S.S. Cephalonia. This ship had departed from Liverpool on May 7th. The Lundbergs’ last residence is shown as S Hestra, Sweden. The ship’s manifest lists their son, Carl O. of Boston, and their daughter, Emma Miller of Boston, as relatives already in the U. S. who will be meeting the immigrants. Emma’s address is shown as 129 Telestron Street, Boston. The family is noted as having arrived with the sum of $650.
There is a reference to a Johan August Lundberg being a member of the Norden Society in Minneapolis in the period 1903-1906.
In the 1905 Minnesota state census, August and “Mrs. Albertine” Lundberg, ages 53 and 54, respectively, are living by themselves on a farm in New London Twp, Kandiyohi County, Minnesota, where they had been for 2 years. This census also shows that they had been in Minnesota for 7 years.
In the 1910 census, August and Albertina are living in Union Grove Township, Meeker County, Minnesota with an 11 year-old adopted son named Antone Anderson who was born in Minnesota. The census form says that the couple had been married for 38 years and that Albertina had had 6 children, 4 still living. The census erroneously lists their arrival date in the U. S. as 1866 instead of 1896.
In the 1916 Canadian census, August, Albertine, and Anton live in Humboldt, Saskatchewan. Also in the household were their daughter Emma Griffin and her husband William.
Terry says: JOHAN AUGUST LUNDBERG also came to Canada {apparently Winnipeg}. I do not know what name Johan August Lundberg used in the USA but I suspect it was CARLSON or Johnson . I only have border crossing records for him visiting his daughters in Orr, St. Louis County, Minnesota and the other daughter in the Boston, Mass. area named Elsie MacFarlane. I have a complete residential addresses for the daughter in Boston but I have not been able to check any further yet on her.
The border crossing records show two crossings for August Lundberg. On June 19, 1923, he crossed at Ranier, Minnesota. He was a farmer from Watson, Saskatchewan, and he gave as his nearest relative his son Oscar Lundberg of Watson. August’s destination is Boston, Massachusetts, where he intends to visit his daughter, Elsie MacFarland of 22 Edgerton Road. He intends to remain in the U.S. for 5 months. He is described as 6 feet tall, of medium complexion, with gray hair and brown eyes. He gives as his place of birth “Heaplopsocher, Sweden.” August claimed to have been in the U.S. from 1896 to May of 1906.
The other border crossing is for John August Lundberg, a farmer of Watson, Saskatchewan, who is leaving Canada at the port of Winnipeg in September of 1919 with his destination Orr, Minnesota. He still claims to be a Swedish citizen.
Terry says: Johan August Lundberg came to Saskatchewan, Canada and takes out a homestead and in his records he claims to be a USA citizen (?). I also found him again travelling to the USA in the American Border records claiming to be Canadian and going to visit another daughter in Orr, St. Louis County, Minnesota.
As Terry points out, the John Lundberg living next door to Charlie and Ida in the 1911 census may be Gus.
An old news clipping given to Jan by Rose shows that Gus sold his farm land, and, presumably, moved into town in 1919.
Terry also says: One relative remembers a relative named "Gus” who died upstairs above their cafe in Naicam, Sask., and who was rooming there. {This is the cafe Oscar and Tilley owned.} He said he was a relative and was very old. In the Lutheran Church records in Naicam they have named Charley Lundberg as dying there but Charley actually died in the City of Nelson, years later, so I assume it was Johan August Lundberg who died above the Naicam cafe located across the street from the train station.
A couple of the locals remember Gus’s house burning down in 1927 which may be the reason that he ended up living above the cafe.
Jan found a border-crossing record for Gus visiting his daughter Mrs. Charles Okman in April of 1928. At that time, Gus was living in Naicam and was expected to spend six months in “Salmon”, Oregon.
Johan married Albertina Josefina Wilhelmina ROSENGREN on 28 Dec 1874 in Drangsered, Hallands län, Sweden. Albertina (daughter of Johan Fredrik ROSENGREN and Fredrika Wilhelmina HOLM) was born on 28 Oct 1851 in Dagsås, Hallands län, Sweden; died on 16 Apr 1919 in Humboldt, Saskatchewan, Canada; was buried in Naicam, Saskatchewan, Canada. Not listed in the 1850-1855 Household Examination. But Carl Johan has confirmed the 1854 birth date from the church book.
According to Carl Johan:
Big-Willy's full name was likely Johan Wilhelm Herdinius Lundberg. This is based on his oldest brother named Johan Wilhelm and the others Johan Alfred, Johan August and Johan Leander. He also had two sons named Johan Alfred and Johan Axel. In an interview with my father's cousin, he says that his grandfatherwas a friend of Wilhelm and that he told him his other name was Herdinius. Compare this to the names of Hjalmar's two oldest sons, Helge Wilhelm and Elfving Herdinius.
