Dalbydata cemetery notes say date of death was October 15th instead of September 15th. MHS death certificate index shows Sept 15th and burial at West Christiania on September 18th. The informant for his death certificate was his son Francis. George died at Dilly Nursing Home in Northfield. The cause of death was heart disease.

He is probably the George Tonsager, retired, who is listed in the 1968, 1970, and 1972 Northfield City Directories as living at 800 West 2nd Street.

George’s obituary is in the October 5, 1972, edition of the New Prague Times, p. 3, column 1.

According to the 1961 Scott County plat book, he owned property in Section 5 of New Market Twp.

He and his wife Mary lived in New Market Twp in the 1930 census. They had no children. Living with them were her mother, Thea Markuson, an 84 year-old widow, and her sister, Rachel Markuson, a 47 year-old spinster.

In the 1940 census, Oscar, Mary, and Rachel lived in the same house in New Market Twp in which they lived in 1935. Oscar was a farmer.

Florence Viola Sandmann (Tonsager) passed away peacefully at home in Webster on Saturday, April 15, 2017 at the age of 101. Florence was born May 31, 1915 to George and Thea (neé Ellingboe) Tonsager in New Market Township. She was baptized and confirmed at West Christiania Church. Her sister, Gladys played the guitar and sang together many times at church. She attended school at Scott County District 65 Country School through the 8th grade, earning two perfect attendance records. She was united in marriage to Ira Sandmann on June 5, 1935. They adopted their 3 children while they farmed near Webster. They farmed for many years before moving into Webster Township in 1978. Ira passed away in December of 1988.

Florence loved to work in her garden, tending to her vegetable and many flower varieties. She was also very active and enjoyed playing cards weekly at the local senior centers. She was a member of St. Johns Church for 81 years. She was active in her church with the Ladies Aid to when changed to the LWML. She loved to crochet and do word searches. Her life was filled with love, spending as much time as possible with her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren and taught them of the love of fishing. Her favorite color was red.

Florence is survived by her children, Betty Nelson of Webster, Jerry (Richard Kelley) of Golden Valley and Larry (Roxanna) of South Range, WI. She is also survived by her grandchildren, James (Tira) Nelson, Timothy Nelson, Kimberly Nelson, Kristine (Jene) Lattimore; great grandchildren, Jason Nelson, Sarah (Jim) McKinnon, Carrie (Chris) Jeno, Nicholas Nelson, Kayla Vohnoutka and great-great grandchildren, Ashton Hortenbach, Avery Jeno and Lily Nelson; two sisters-in-law, Marjorie Tonsager (Francis), and Marcelline Tonsager (Bud); many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Florence was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Ira; her parents; grandson, Mark Nelson; 7 brothers, Clarence, Palmer, Lester, Sidney, her twin Francis, Elvin and Floyd (Bud); 1 sister, Gladys (Mrs. George Sandmann).

Interment, St. John’s Cemetery, Webster.

Bonnie June Stapf (nee: Tonsager), age 84 of Farmington, MN and Davenport, FL passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loved ones on May 11th.

Bonnie was born June 4th, 1937 to Palmer and Velma Tonsager. She grew up in Farmington, MN, where she met and later would marry the love of her life, Myron. In their over 61 years of marriage, they built a home, raised three children, and built a company where she was a real estate broker. In their retirement years, they spent most winters in Florida with good friends, enjoyed their social club, traveling around the world and golf outings.

Bonnie loved to cook. There wasn't a recipe or kitchen gadget she didn't have. She was a gracious and frequent hostess, throwing great parties and warm family gatherings. She was a die-hard Vikings fan - usually. She was vibrant and fearless, and she loved to laugh and spend time with her people. After a debilitating stroke five years ago, her only complaint was that she could no longer go dancing.

Bonnie is survived by her beloved husband Myron, daughters Lisa Thostenson (Mark), Stacy Fleming (Brian) and son Darin Stapf, six grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and her special dog MeToo and cat Sammie. A Celebration of Life will be held open house style at Celt's Pub in Farmington on Thursday July 7th from 4-7pm. Feel free to wear purple, orange or green, and bring stories or photos to share. In lieu of flowers, Memorials can be made to the family. A scholarship to St. Paul College Culinary Arts cooking school is planned.

Otte, Marguerite Ellen "Margo" died peacefully surrounded by family at her home in Richmond, Texas, on October 30th at the age of 80. Margo was born and raised in Farmington, Minnesota, and graduated from the University of Minnesota with a Bachelors Degree in Education. She received her Masters from the University of Minnesota Mankato. She met her lifelong love, Darrell, in high school and they were married for almost 60 years. Margo taught at Farmington Elementary School for more than 30 years and touched many lives with her passion for teaching. Margo enjoyed golfing, dancing, reading, playing cards and growing her beautiful flowers which she shared with her family and friends. After retiring, they enjoyed spending the winters in Arizona and Texas and summers at the lake in Wisconsin. Her and Darrell also greatly enjoyed attending and cheering for their grandchildren at all their sporting events. Margo is preceded in death by her parents, Palmer and Velma Tonsager and by son Douglas. She is survived by her husband, Darrell and children; Doneen Viall, David and Melissa Otte, Barb and Adam Borrowman. Margo was a wonderful grandma and great-grandma to Kylynn, Becca, Nick, Logan, Keegan, Kendall, Mitchell, Cambell and Rily. She is also survived by sister Bonnie and her husband Myron Stapf and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She will be greatly missed. Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers will be donated to a project at Farmington Elementary School.

Bobby was Lester Tonsager's son, Robert Lester Tonsager, born in November, 1931.

In the 1940 census, Robert lived with his grandparents, George and Thea Tonsager, and apparently had lived with them five years earlier.

Bobby died at age 22 in September of 1954. Lester's young wife (?) Alice died in at age 18 in 1933 so she apparently had Bobby at 16. Lester remarried and died in 1945 at the age of 36. Bobby was apparently associated in some way with the Minnesota Air National Guard. Bobby is buried either with or near Thea and George in West Christiania Cemetery where both of his parents are also buried.

Burial record or gravestone show that Robert Lester was a member of the Minnesota A1C 514 Air Defense Group. Record also says “raised by George and Thea Ellingboe Tonsager.”

A newspaper account of Robert’s death said that he lived at 1820 W. 90th Street in Bloomington and was killed after his car left county road 56 near New Market village and went into a field. Tonsager’s body was found about 30 feet from the roadway. The road was straight where his northbound car apparently left it, traveled 60 feet into the field and then skidded back to the edge of the road. Officials guessed he might have been thrown from the car and then run over by it. Tonsager was dead on arrival at Lakeville hospital.



The death notice for Robert Tonsager appeared in the September 9, 1954, editions of the Shakopee Valley News (p. 1, column 3), and the New Prague Times (p. 6, column 6).

Laverne 'Vern' Tonsager 1940–2017 Circle Lake—Laverne "Vern" Tonsager, age 77 of Northfield, passed away surrounded by family on October 27th, at his home. Vern Darrell Tonsager was born July 19, 1940, in Northfield, Minnesota, to Ruby (Fredrickson) and Lester Tonsager. Vern was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend. He was raised in Northfield and was a house painter for 55 years. Vern was an active parishioner and volunteer at Annunciation Church in Hazelwood, MN. Vern battled Leukemia for three years and Pancreatic Cancer for the last 18 months, facing the diagnosis with courage, and determination. Vern continued working until recently and deeply missed a hard day's work. He loved spending winters in Ft Myers and fishing on the ocean with his buddies and family. He spent three decades on Circle Lake where his hobbies were fishing and building houses. He cherished all of the time with his grandkids and great-grandkids more than anything else. Survivors include wife Gwen (Elzen) Tonsager; his children, Dawn (Brian) Cherwinka of Faribault, Troy Tonsager of Eagan, Kari (Brian) Amacher of Faribault, Tony of Waseca; his grandchildren Brittany (Zack) Sisk of Chicago, Illinois, Ashlee (Trent) Hering of Waterville, Kelsey Cherwinka of Faribault; Conner, Olivia, Landon and Caden Tonsager of Eagan; Marisa, Joshua, and Grace Amacher of Faribault, Kaylee and Allison Tonsager of Rochester; his great-grandchildren Chase Hering and Rylin Tonsager; his sister Darlene (David) Endres of Eagan. Preceding him in death were his parents Ruby and Lester Tonsager; mother and father-in-law, Alice and Henry Elzen; sisters Shirley Gould, Joannie Anderson, and Roxie Judkins. A memorial Mass will be held at 11AM, Monday, October 30th, 2017, at the Church of the Annunciation, 4996 Hazelwood Ave, Northfield, MN 55057. Visitation will be 9-11AM, prior to the funeral Mass at the Church of the Annunciation. Interment will take place directly after the funeral Mass at the Annunciation Church Cemetery.

Larry Duane Sandmann, b. ca 1954, lived in Duluth in 2013. That Larry apparently was a guitar player for several bands and was nicknamed Lefty. He suffered a debilitating stroke in 2012.

Of South Range, Wisconsin, at the time of Florence’s death in April of 2017. His kidney cancer prevented him from attending her funeral.

Adopted by Florence and Ira when he was four years old.

Attended New Prague High School.

Larry had had surgery for kidney cancer and apparently was recovering, but something went wrong. Larry had a wife. They had been married for about 5 years.
