The 1871-1876 Kånna household examination suggests that Carl and Britta came to Ljunga, or at least Berghem Andersgård, on October 2, 1874, two months and twenty days before they were married.

They lived near or with his sister Emelie and family on Andersgård.

The Anbytartforum confirms this, saying: “Carl Gustaf came in December 1873 to Kånna from the parish of Thorup. He then moved in with his brother Carl Oscar at the Berget cottage under {near?} Kvänjarp. In October of 1874, he moved with his bride-to-be Britta Maria of the Björkelund cottage under {to? in?} Berghem Andersgård. They married that December. In October of 1877 they moved to Berget cottage under {in?} Berghem south farm. Then on July 17, 1881, the family emigrated to America.” (This may have been the date on which they were permitted to leave and actually left Sweden sometime in September.)

Lived in Kånna, a small town northwest of Södra Ljunga, until they emigrated. Left Sweden in September, 1881, with the destination of Red Wing, Minnesota. Terry says: They left from Malmo, Sweden on the Ship ALEXANDRA, arriving at Grimsby, England (east coast) taking the train to Liverpool. I have a picture of this ship. It never made it back to Sweden as it sunk in a major storm on the return trip to Sweden. Captain Johnson and crew probably all drowned but I never found about that yet. I have all the ship's crews names and home towns. The name of the ship owner was the South Sweden Steamship Company of Malmo, Sweden, which is on the south tip of Sweden directly across the Strait from Copenhagen in Denmark so there probably were Danish passengers too?

The name of the shipping carrier was the INMAN Line with tickets to New York destined for RED WING, MINNESOTA. The big ships from Liverpool were usually called CITY of xxx......... but I have not found the exact ship name they were on yet as some of these ships had six hundred people on them and there were many ships each day to New York. Annerstad is near to Kånna and South Ljunga in Kronoberg län, SMALAND, Sweden.

Britta, Tilda, and baby Emma (but, apparently, not Charley) arrived in New York from Liverpool on October 14, 1881, on the City of Paris which had sailed from the Swedish port of Malmö. The stated destination of the three was Red Wing, Minnesota. Carl Gustaf may have gone ahead earlier and then sent for his wife and children. All four are shown as leaving the Berghem Södregård parish at Kånna in 1881.

According to Terry, Charley, a 31 year-old tinsmith traveled from Glasgow to New York on the Devonia, arriving June 7, 1881.

In an 1885 census, the family was living in Cannon Falls Twp. The family consisted of Charles Lundberg, 35, Maria, 40, Mathilda M., 9, Nanny C., 6, Laurina, 4, and Alfred, 1.

In the 1895 Minnesota state census, the family lives in Athens Twp, Isanti County. They had been there for a year-and-a-half.

In the 1900 U.S. census, the family was living in East Barton, Pierce County, North Dakota. The family consisted of Carl, 50, Maria, 54, Walter, 18, and Ida, 14. Both children had been born in Minnesota. Carl is a farmer, Walter a farm laborer, and Ida a servant. Carl and Maria came to the U.S. in 1881. Maria has had 8 children, 5 still living. Carl and Maria had been married for 22 years.

He moved to Naicam, Saskatchewan, Canada, with his second wife. But at the time of the 1910 U.S. census, he and Hannah were living in Milaca Township not too far from the John Quaid family.

Not listed in the 1911 Canadian census.

In the 1916 census, he and Hanna lived in Lake Lenore. He and Hanna came to Canada in 1911. Charles became a Canadia citizen in 1914, Hanna was still an American citizen. They were both Protestants.

As Jan found, Charey and Hannah lived in Preeceville Twp, Saskatchewan, in Canada’s 1921 census. They lived alone and were still engaged in farming. They still claimed, respectively, Swedish and Danish citizenship. Both claimed to be Lutherans.

Terry says: He probably never went to school since his land records in CANADA are marked by an " X" but even that I do not know for sure since he may have been able to write in Swedish and not in English.

Terry says: the LUNDBERGS in Sweden always used that name which is very unusual as most Swedes used Johansson, Svensson, Pederson, etc. and changed their name every generation. I have most of the Swedish records but can not find them in the USA; maybe they became Carlssons, Johnson, Anderson, etc. and thus so common a name it is hard to trace them in the USA....??

Generation: 2

  1. 2.  Thilda Maria (Tillie) LUNDBERG Descendancy chart to this point (1.Carl1) was born on 20 Mar 1875 in Kånna, Småland, Kronobergs län, Sweden; died on 7 Dec 1941 in Naicam, Saskatchewan, Canada; was buried on 12 Dec 1941 in Immanuel Lutheran Church Cemetery, Naicam, Saskatchewan, Canada.

    Notes:

    She married her first cousin.

Born in Björkelund, Berghem Andersgard. (The Berghem south of Ljungby.)

    Lived in Naicam, Saskatchewan.

Her birthdate is shown as Jan 1871 in the 1900 U.S. Census. Shown as having come to this country in 1875.

Britta, Tilda, and baby Emma arrived in New York from Liverpool on October 14, 1881, on the City of Paris.

A Tilda Lundberg, of legal age, married Andrew J Swanson in Red Wing on 20 Nov 1891. The witnesses were John Lundberg and Ann Anderson. The “M.G” who performed the ceremony, Gustaf Rast, also performed the Blixt marriage.

Her father “Charles Lumberg”, had to give his consent for her marriage to Oscar Blixt in 1892. That consent form said that “Tilda Marie Lumberg” was 17 although actually she would have been still 16.

In the 1895 Minnesota state census, Tillie is 21 and living with her parents and siblings in Athens Twp, Isanti County.

Jan says: Oscar Johnson and wife Thilda Maria lived in West Superior in year 1900 for a while as some of his children were born there in Wisconsin.

In the 1900 census, Oscar and Tilda and their family are living at 1205 Third Street in Superior. The family consists of Oscar, Tilda, Ester, and Alfreda. These are the only two children Tilda had had at that time. Also living with them is Charlie Johnson, still single, and relatively recently arrived in the U.S. in 1898. Both men are shown as day laborers. Charlie may be Oscar’s brother Karl.

In the 1910 census, Tillie is shown as having had 5 children, all 5 still living. That seems to exclude Josephine who was not listed with the five daughters in the 1910 census.

Perhaps there was an earlier marriage. Family sources also have 27 May 1896 or 27 May 1894.

  3. 4.  Nanny Emma Rebekka (Annie Rebecka) LUNDBERG Descendancy chart to this point (1.Carl1) was born on 10 May 1879 in Kånna, Småland, Kronobergs län, Sweden; died on 3 Feb 1936 in Naicam, Saskatchewan, Canada; was buried in Naicam Cemetery, Naicam, Saskatchewan, Canada.

    Notes:

    Born in Berget, Berghem Sodregård.

The Anbytartforum entry for her indicates that her birth year was 1879. So does the Kånna 1877-1881 Household Examination (p.20).

Britta, Tilda, and baby Emma arrived in New York from Liverpool on October 14, 1881, on the City of Paris.

She and her husband and children were living at 709 Jackson Street in Minneapolis at the time of the 1900 census. Annie had had two children, both still living (Mary Katherine and Margaret Julia).

In the 1905 Minnesota state census, the family was living with the rest of the Quaids in Foreston. John was a painter, had been in Minnesota for 21-and-a-half years and had been in Foreston for 5-and-a-half years. That may be incorrect: Josephine and the three girls had been in Foreston for only 3 years and 9 months.

In the 1910 census, the family was living on a farm that they owned with mortgage in Milaca Township. The family consisted of John J., 40, Annie R., 38, Mary K., 13, Margaret J., 10, and Annie J., 7. Annie is shown as having had 6 children, only the still living. (On the day the census-taker appeared at their farm, Annie would have been 8 months pregnant and two weeks away from giving birth to her 7th child.) Not too far was the farm of her father and his 2nd wife.

Lived in Naicam, Saskatchewan. In a Naicam history, Claudia Ponath contributed this on the Quaids:

“Mr. and Mrs. John J. Quaid and family came by train to Watson from Foreston, Minnesota, U.S.A., homesteading in the Byng District in approximately 1910. A year later, Mrs. Quaid’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charley Lundberg, settled on the same quarter with them. Mr. Quaid was one of the first Municipal Councillors and was one of the first who initiative to build a school so was elected to the school board the first year. Their family consisted of three daughters and one son - Mary, Margaret, Josephine, and Francis.”

Could not find the Quaids in the 1911 Canadian census.

Roy lists her birth location as Bergham Sodregard Berget, Sweden.

Terry says: “Incidentally, the Quaid house was the original town jail in Naicam. Very few people know that little fact. I was told by a previous owner that the walls are about two feet thick as he had tried to drill through it for some reason.”

    Her obituary:

Mrs. J. J. Quaid Laid to Rest

The death of Mrs. J. J. Quaid occurred at her home early Monday morning, February 3rd. Mrs. Quaid had been in ill health for some time but on Sunday suddenly took a turn for the worse and quietly passed away in the early hours of Monday morning. The many friends are comforted in the thought that the family was at her bedside when the end came.

Mrs. Quaid was 57 years old and was born in Sweden. She immigrated to the United States and later married J. J. Quaid. They came to Canada 23 years ago and settled on a homestead in the Byng district west of Naicam. She is survived by her husband, three daughters, and one son, Mrs. R. (Dick) Sharp, Mrs. Paul Jestin, Mrs. Fred Jestin, all of Byng district and Francis at home.

The funeral service was held at the home by Rev. Fr. Chrysostom. Burial took place in the municipal cemetery.

Pall bearers were Messrs. Fred Jestin, Paul Jestin, Dick Sharp, and Francis Quaid.

Nanny married John Joseph QUAID on 23 Feb 1896 in Foreston, Mille Lacs County, Minnesota. John (son of William QUAID and Catherine FITZGIBBON) was born on 4 Dec 1869 in Crean, County Limerick, Ireland; died on 15 Mar 1943 in Naicam, Saskatchewan, Canada. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Children:

  4. 5.  Josefina Laurina (Jose) LUNDBERG Descendancy chart to this point (1.Carl1) was born on 16 Dec 1881 in Cannon Falls, Goodhue County, Minnesota; died on 7 Jun 1964 in Preeceville, Saskatchewan, Canada.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Baptism: 22 Dec 1881, Cannon Falls, Goodhue County, Minnesota

    Notes:

Her birth, on December 16, 1881, in Cannon Falls, is recorded on line 24, p. 2, of the Goodhue County Birth Records. Her entry, as Josefina Laurina Lundberg, is two lines down from her cousin Alexander Fogelquist’s. Her parents are listed as Carl Gustaf and Brita Maria, both born in Sweden. Carl Gustaf is a farmer.

The church birth records erroneously suggest that Josefina Laurina was born on December 16, 1880, and was baptized December 22, 1880. Her birth and baptism record seems to be recorded out of order in the midst of children born and baptized in late 1881. No baptismal sponsors are listed in her entry.

She and her husband moved to Preeceville, Saskatchewan, which is 80 miles east of Naicam.

According to information supplied by Roy Carlson:

Ole and Josie and family moved to the Ketchen district in 1910. They shipped their machinery, household furniture, cattle, and horses by rail to Canora where it was unloaded and taken to their homestead. There were no buildings so they had to start from the beginning. They lived in this district for many years. They adopted Norman Myhran when he was four years old and he was with them until their death. In April, 1915, Eunice married Nels Nelson. They had 8 children. In 1921, Emma married Adolph Anderson. They had three children. They retired and moved to Preeceville. Ole Peterson died November 8, 1960, at the age of 86. Jose died June 7, 1964, at the age of 82.

According to Charley Lundberg’s obiturary, Josie and Ole and family were living in Nelson, B. C., at the the time Charley died as was Tillie and her husband. Charley may have been staying with one of the daughters at the time he died.

Josefina married Ole PETERSON on 2 Nov 1897 in Mille Lacs County, Minnesota. Ole was born about 1873 in Norway; died on 8 Nov 1960. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

Or 13 Aug 1896 in Foreston. The 1900 census shows her as being born in Wisconsin in October of 1896. She may be the Maria Johnson born in Douglas County on 8 Oct 1896 although one source says that Esther’s middle name was Virginia.

There were two Myhran families in the East Barton precinct in the 1900 census. Neither of them had a child named Norman so, unless Norman was renamed, it is likely that Norman was born after 1900.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Confirmation: 18 Nov 1915, Ketchen Lutheran Church, Ketchen, Saskatchewan, Canada

    Notes:

Betsy said that she was born in 1900.

Lived in the Preeceville area of eastern Saskatchewan.

Betsy had seven boys and one girl. Terry J. says that he has the names and some phone numbers of all of Betsy’s children.

Ida Deiters’s estate settlement papers show a reimbursement of $10 paid to “Mrs. Betsy Carlson in Canada” for obtaining two death certificates. The date was December 15, 1964.

Betsy wrote this entry on her parents’ family for “Lines of the Past”, the local history book put out by the Preeceville Historical Society in 1982.

My parents came from Barton, North Dakota. Father was of Norwegian descent and mother was Swedish. They came to claim a homestead in the southeast quarter of Section 14 in the year of 1910. There were four children: myself (Betsy), Alice, Emery, and Walter. We were all born in the States and we all attended Robinson Creek School.

Father drove oxen for a couple of years. He also worked out when work was available. He trapped fur-bearing animals in the winter and later on he herded cattle for several farmers. This all brought in extra money for improving the farm and building a house and other buildings for livestock and poultry.

Once a month, a trip would be made to the closest store, which was in Buchanan. Word would go around that a neighbor was going to Buchanan. The farmer going to purchase groceries, etc., would have several orders to bring back.

Wild fruit such as strawberries, raspberries, currants, cranberries, and chokecherries were plentiful. Mother canned without adding sugar and we often ate the fruit without sweetening.

Mother was a very thrifty homemaker. Soap was scarce in our household; mother used wood ashes in the wash water. This saved soap and was also very helpful in removing heavy soil from father’s and brothers’ work clothes.

Mother spun and carded wool and knit socks and mitts and often sweaters for the family and she sewed a lot of clothes.

I remember I wanted a new dress so bad for a fair day in Preeceville. Father did not have the money but I was determined to have a new dress so I went out and dug seneca root, took it to town, and sold it in the green state. I bought material and mother sewed me a dress.

Mother acted as midwife often in the neighbourhood. In 1927 a neighbour came to get her for this purpose. While she was getting into the buggy the horses became frightened and overpowered the driver. They ran at a breakneck speed down the road before the driver was in control again. Mother was hurt quite bad and could not walk for days. But, nevertheless, she attended the birth of the child even though she was in agony. She suffered for years with an injured knee cap. That baby boy born that September night in 1927 was Orval Nordtweten.

The flies and mosquitoes were terrible in those early years. Big smudges had to be built every night for the animals to give them rest and relief from the bites and stings.

There were house parties. There was no booze at these parties. Everyone had a good time dancing ‘till daybreak.

When I was 11 years old, I had rheumatic fever. Mother treated me with homemade remedies and cured me. Walter and Emery were sick too but they were worse and did not respond to mother’s treatment. They were taken to the Canora hospital.

Mother passed away in 1963 from a heart attack at the age of 79. Father died in April, 1966. They are buried in Preeceville cemetery.

I (Betsy) was born in 1900. I married Olaf Carlson in 1918. We moved to Hassan. (More about my family in Olaf Carlson history.)

Sister Alice, the youngest, was born in 1907 and married Grant Halvorson in 1926. Alice stayed home and helped until her marriage. The family lived on a farm in the Rockford district for several years then moved to Quesnel, B.C. Grant worked in the lumbering industry and Alice took care of welfare children for 12 years. Alice and Grant have four children: Teddy, Walter, Lila, and Betty.

Brother Emery was born in 1903. He worked out most of the time after leaving school. He married Myrtle Hanson in 1924. They lived in the Robinson Creek district for several years and also farmed in the Ketchen area for some years. They had one daughter, Lila. The family moved to Quesnel, B.C., in the 1950s. Emery’s wife died in August, 1969.

Brother Walter was born in 1905 and grew up to be a superb dancer. Like his brother Emery, he loved horses. He was killed in a freak accident in 1939 when the truck he was riding in hit a rack pulled by a tractor. A piece of the 2x4 lumber crashed through the windshield and struck Walter. He died just a few hours later. Walter was married to Violet Hanson. Their only child died at birth in 1935.

Betsy married Olaf CARLSON on 14 Dec 1918 in Preeceville, Saskatchewan, Canada. Olaf was born on 27 Sep 1893 in Summit, Roberts County, South Dakota; died on 28 Jul 1960. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Earl passed away on Saturday, February 7, 2015. He was pleased to reach his goal of 90 years and reflected back on a good life with many a smile and an occasional tear in the last month. He was predeceased by his parents Everett and Freida; wife of 55 years Gwendoline "Gwen"; son Albert Kenneth "Ken"; granddaughter Megan; son-in-law Bryan; and siblings Florence, Albert, and Kenneth. Dad lost his friend, Corporal Alphonse Nobel on the battlefield in France. He never forgot him. Earl will be remembered by his children Robert (Sue), Elizabeth "Beth", Virginia "Ginny" (Gord), Allan, and Florence "Flo" (Dennis); grandchildren Tina (Danny), Shannon, Tammy, Robert (Toni), Crystal, Sarah (Blake), Gord, Eric (Farah), Amanda (Jason), Lisa, and Simon (Nicole); daughters-in-law Sheila and Mona; numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Dad loved Saskatchewan and was honoured to be a part of its history. He served in the Canadian Army overseas; farmed in a cooperative near Smokey Burn; and worked for the Department of Agriculture Conservation and Development Branch for 36 years. Dad often said he had the best job in the world. He got to travel throughout the province creating community pastures, drilling dugouts and visiting with people. Upon retirement, Dad and Mom took time to stay connected with lifelong friends and family throughout Canada and the U.S., but he was always glad to return home to his family, the garden, and his early morning swims at the Lawson Aquatic Centre. He also worked with the Canadian Corps of Commissionaires in retirement. Dad was a proud member of the Royal Canadian Legion for 59 years. In 2014, he was awarded with the Knight of the National Order of the Legion of Honour; a recognition from the Government of France. In his later years at the "Vets" unit in Wascana Rehab, Earl could be found in the solarium reading, singing or visiting. Our family wishes to extend our heartfelt thanks to all the staff of Unit 3-6. Each of you helped to make Wascana his home. Thank you to the Royal Canadian Legion and the Ladies Auxiliary for their dedication to all the veterans.

Although Ken lived most of his life on the west coast, he had many friends across Canada. Many of us will remember him driving happily across Canada and the States in his 18-wheeler, listening to his trucking tunes, talking on the CB. He had many good memories of the friends he made the hours spent with his sons on the road, eating at truck stops, sleeping in his cab, and passing each other on the highway. I can remember many a holiday visiting those same truck stops, checking to see who might be in town. He was a man known for his laughter and loyalty to friends. He loved to play jokes on people, and so he was also the receiver of many jokes as well. He was a treasure, a million times more valuable than the ones some people spend a lifetime trying to find. He was someone whom anyone would be privileged to know. He was not only a fantastic friend; he was a tremendous, rare and extraordinary person, a beloved father, grandfather, uncle and husband. He will be missed by all who knew him. This world is a better place because he walked through it. Celebration of life will be held Saturday, December 1st from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at his son Gord and Jan Langevin's home.

Bud returned home to Williston where he married Betty Forness in 1953. They divorced in 1978 but remained good friends. Bud worked for many years in the oil patch working various jobs from derrick hand to building locations. He also worked road construction for many years. In 1953, Bud became a lifetime member of the Loyal Order Of the Moose. Bud had a love of horses and he rodeoed in the PRCA, and many other rodeos. In his later years when he couldn’t rodeo anymore, Bud was known for driving around in his truck. He loved to watch "Wheel of Fortune" and among his prized possessions was his $1000.00 piece from the wheel and an autographed picture of Vanna White. Bud loved a good barter and always looked through pawn shops and second hand stores looking for a good deal. He enjoyed reading, growing tomatoes, and watching his grandchildren play sports. He was a generous person and his door was always open for anyone down on their luck. As always, Bud was late for everything in fact he is late for his own funeral.

Percy married Betty FORNESS on 18 Jul 1953 in Williston, Williams County, North Dakota, and was divorced in 1978. Betty died in Unknown. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

Claudia Josephine Jestin was born to Hypolite (Paul) and Margaret (Quaid) Jestin July 4, 1919 at Watson Hospital. Mom’s first home was a log granary, the only building on their homestead section in Kermaria.

Mom was the oldest of four. Claudia, Robert, John and Margaret (then known as Babe). The family moved to Naicam as the children got older. Mom fell in love with Tom Ponath, and married during wartime in Regina, March 6, 1943. After the war, Mom and Dad purchased the Ponath homestead from his family and they started their own family: Linda, born 1947, Lyle Thomas, 1951 and Donna Lee 1957.

Claudia was very active in the Naicam community, volunteering with the Catholic Women’s League, Naicam’s Music Festival, Naicam’s Golf Course and Communities in Bloom.
Mom had many talents as well. She rode horses, square danced, curled, (bonspieled in particular!), sewed her own clothes and ours, embroidered many great works, crocheted, played piano, gardened, cross stitched and knit. Mom owned and operated the Sears Catalogue sales office in Naicam for many years, which in those days, was a very active franchise.

Tom passed in 1980 and Mom married John Knutson. Together they traveled the world. They were able to square dance in many of the countries they visited. They also square danced at the opening of the Olympics in Calgary 1988.

Mom and John spent winters in their home in Arizona. After John passed, Mom and Arizona neighbor Dan Moyer become special friends. Dan being from Iowa, would spend summers in Naicam and Mom would spend winters in Iowa and sometimes with Donna and Don in Arizona.

Claudia moved to Churchview Lodge 2012. Sadly Mom’s vision slowly went through Macular Degeneration. When her son Lyle passed, and after a bout of illness, Mom decided Parkland would be a good place to spend the rest of her time here on Earth.

Claudia was predeceased by her mother Margaret, father Paul, husband Thomas Ponath, brothers Robert Jestin and John Jestin (Gloria), husband John Knutson, son Lyle Thomas Ponath, great friend Daniel Moyer and recently brother-in-law Doug Mowat.

Claudia is survived by her sister Margaret Mowat, sister-in-law Margaret Jestin, daughter Linda Ponath, granddaughter Lana Lavoie (Shaun Larkin), great grandchildren Luke and Charles, granddaughter Janine Lavoie Harding (James Harding) great grandchildren Thomas, Olivya and Isabelle, daughter-in-law Terry Ponath, granddaughter Nicole and great granddaughter Kyra, grandson Michael (Ellen Elgersma), great grandsons Jesse and Bennett and daughter Donna (Don Rumberger). Claudia had many nieces and nephews and always remembered when their birthdays were and who they married. Her memory was remarkable.
