    More than one family tree on Ancestry.com has Martha Jane’s mother as Martha Frances Bush, b. 1856 in Grassy, Morgan County, Kentucky, and dying 4 May 1901 in Powell County.

    As Greenbery, he lived with his parents in Holly Creek in the 1910 census. He had no occupation and could neither read nor write.

    The Jasperson Family Tree calls him Greenburg Hatton. This source says that he resided in Antioch, Wolfe County, in 1900 and in Holly Creek, Wolfe County, in 1910.

    Both of her parents were born in Kentucky. A 1900 census entry for Martha Hatton, daughter of William Hatton in Wolfe County, shows her as being born in July of 1882. Other sources say 1883.

    The informant for her death certificate was her son Hafed of Aitkin. She died of pneumonia complicated by emphysema. Her “usual residence” was Lt. Pine Rt., Aitkin.

    Sara E. Dotzler,  98, Aitkin, died Saturday, Sept. 10, 2016, at the Aicota Health Care Center in Aitkin.

    Sara was born April 7, 1918, in Irondale Township of Crow Wing County, the daughter of Grover and Martha (Hatton) Banks. She grew up and attended schools in Aitkin. She then attended teacher’s normal school in Crosby. She taught school at White Oak, Pine Knoll and the Jungle School.

    She married Frank W. Dotzler on Sept. 6, 1941, in Aitkin. They made their home in Cuyuna for several years and then moved to Cedarbrook where she lived until 2013. She worked at the Aitkin County Courthouse in the auditors office for a number of years and in 1968 started working for the Aitkin Independent Age. She worked for the newspaper until her retirement in 1998. She was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Aitkin. She enjoyed crocheting, gardening, reading, canning, birds and cats.

    She is survived by children and spouses: Ruth (Gerald) Erickson, Minnetonka; Elaine (Roland) Schafer, Oak Park; Eileen Ternus, Dent; Phillip (Judy) Dotzler, Aitkin; Ronald (Sharon) Dotzler, Aitkin; daughters-in-law: Linda Dotzler, Aitkin and Carol Dotzler, Aitkin; 19 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

    She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Frank; sons: William and Donald; five brothers and five sisters.

    Burial will be in the St. Thomas Cemetery in Aitkin.

    William Banks, 83, Aitkin, died Dec. 20, 2004, at his home.

    He was born Aug. 27, 1921, in Ross Lake Township of Crow Wing County, the son of Grover Cleveland and Martha Jane (Hatton) Banks. He attended country school in Ross Lake Township until he reached ninth grade at which time he attended school in Aitkin. He joined the U.S. Army and served during World War II as an MP. Upon his discharge, he returned to the Aitkin area and married Opal Randall on June 3, 1945, in Superior, Wis. They made their home in the Aitkin area and he worked for sawmills for a time and then he worked in the mines at Crosby. He then worked for a mining company at Keewatin until his retirement in 1979. He was a member of the Bethel Lutheran Brethren Church in Aitkin and the Aitkin American Legion Post. He enjoyed gardening, snowblowing and helping others.

    Funeral services were Dec. 13 at the Bethel Lutheran Brethren Church with the Rev. Gunnar Salmonson officiating. Burial will be in the Bennettville Cemetery. Military honors were provided by the Aitkin VFW and American Legion posts.

    He is survived by his wife, Opal; sons and daughters-in-law, Ernest “Harry” and Bonnie Banks, St. Framcis; Donald and Barbara Banks, Calumet; and William and Suetta Banks, Aitkin; daughters and sons-in-law, Martha and Randy Wide, New Ulm; Jeanette and Roger Andrews, Brooklyn Park; Bonnie and Joseph Mores, Fairborn, Ohio; 18 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; sisters, Sara Dotzler, Aitkin and Hannah Dockter, Des Moines, Wash.

    He was preceded in death by his parents, one grandson, two brothers, and four sisters.

    Arrangements were with Sorenson-Root-Thompson Funeral Home in Aitkin.

    According to enlistment records, William Banks enlisted on 10 February 1941 in Aitkin. He entered the Corps of Military Police as a Private in the National Guard. His height was 68 and his weight was 169. He was single, without dependents, and his civilian occupation was farm hand. He had a grammar school education and claimed that he was born in 1919.

    Cemetery records show that he was a Master Sergeant in the U.S. Army and a Korean War veteran. Other records show him as a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Air Force in Korea.

    His obituary was published on p. 03:3 of the November 21, 1973, edition of the Duluth News-Tribune. He died in a Duluth hospital but he lived in Aitkin. He was survived by his wife Angeline, and by three sons (Douglas Jr., Mark, and Steven) and two daughters (Tammy and Lynn), all five of whom were still at home. He was also survived by both of his parents and by four sisters and four brothers.

    Helen was born Feb. 16, 1934 and grew up in Aitkin, Minn. She graduated from Aitkin High School. On a blind date she met her sweetheart Max Smith and fell in love. They were married in 1954 and started their family in Plymouth. After raising four children, Helen worked for Nortronics and as an apartment manager in Maple Grove. After retiring Helen and Max moved North to Sugar Lake, Minn., and wintered in St. Augustine, Fla. In 2004, they moved to Baxter to be closer to family. All along the way she established life-long friendships. Helen was always a happy person and cherished her family and friends; she shared her love by baking and cooking for them often. She also enjoyed painting.

    Helen is survived by sister, Edna (Bill) Everson, of Baxter; children, Larry (Cindy), Greg (Laura), Jeff (Myrtice), and Barb (Scott); grandchildren, Blair, Kelby, Jamie, DevonLee, Ashley, Chelsey, and Gabrielle; and great-grandchildren, Emma and Shayla. Helen was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Max; parents, Edwin and Elizabeth Wendt; and her sister, Hazel Anderson.

    William Frank “Bill” Dotzler, age 72 of Aitkin died Friday, December 26, 2014 peacefully at his home. Bill was born May 1, 1942 in Aitkin, Minnesota the son of Frank and Sara (Banks) Dotzler. He grew up and attended schools in Aitkin graduating from the Aitkin High School in 1960. He worked for Aitkin Motor Company for several years and then Hasskamp Equipment for a time. He also worked for Al Johnson Construction growing wild rice. He also worked for Red Welshons as a herd manager for a herd of beef cattle and also worked for Triangle Sales building barns and repairing barns. He married Linda M. Stofferahn on September 27, 1969 in McGregor. They made their home out on the rice flats for a couple of years and then moved north of Aitkin and operated a dairy farm until selling the dairy operation in 2005 and he went into raising beef cattle and sheep. He also worked for Blue Valley Sod and helped grow lawn grass. He was a school bus driver for the Aitkin Independent Schools for many years and drove bus up until Christmas break. He was a member of the Mississippi Headwaters Board, the Aitkin Township Board, Central Cattleman’s Association, ASCS Board, AMPI Board of Directors and St. John’s Lutheran Church of Cedarbrook, having served on church council. He enjoyed collecting Louis L’Amour and William Johnstone western books, World War II books, toy tractors and friends. He loved deer hunting, fishing, traveling, fixing machinery and watching his crops grow, especially his corn. He enjoyed football, especially the Gobblers and Sunday afternoons with the Vikings, attending wrestling matches and dance line. In his younger years he enjoyed snowmobiling and ice fishing with his family. Above all he loved farming and driving school bus and his family. Over the years he was a surrogate dad to many neighborhood boys and he was grandpa to the children he loved so dearly on his school bus. He was a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather and good friend to many. He is survived by his mother Sara Dotzler of Aitkin; Wife: Linda Dotzler of Aitkin; Sons and daughters in law: John and Patti Dotzler of St. Petersburg, Florida; Kevin and Penni Dotzler of Aitkin; Daughter and son in law: Laura and Dean Stack of Nevis, Mn.; Brothers: Phillip (Judy) Dotzler of Aitkin, Ronald (Sharon) Dotzler of Aitkin; Donald (Carol) Dotzler of Nashwauk, Mn.; Sisters: Ruth (Gerald) Erickson of Minnetonka, Mn.; Elaine (Ron) Schafer of Oak Park, MN.; Eileen Ternus of Dent, Mn.; Grandchildren: Spencer, Molly, Justine, Step Grandchildren: Kenny, Kristina, Mitchell, and Cooper; Great Grandchildren: Landon, Ethan, Avalynn, Kaelyn, Sienna and Cora. He started work at Hannah Butler Mining Company (U.S. Steel), where he continued to work for 40 years. Don enjoyed gardening, fishing, hunting and spending time with his family. He was a loving father and husband who worked hard to provide for his family. He cared deeply for his brothers and sisters. Don adored his grandchildren. He was looking forward to retirement and spending more time with his loved ones.

    He was preceded in death by his father, Frank Dotzler and his brother, William Dotzler.

    Donald is survived by Carol Dotzler, his loving wife of 35 years; daughters, Karly Lillo (Mike), Brainerd; Sara Karr (Kris), Deerwood; grandchildren, Payton and Addison Lillo and Nicholas and Alyssa Karr; his mother, Sara (Banks) Dotzler, Aitkin; his sisters, Ruth Erickson (Jerry), Minnetonka; Elaine Schafer (Ron), Oak Park; and Eileen Ternus Dent; his brothers, Phillip Dotzler (Judy), Aitkin, Ronald Dotzler (Sharon), Aitkin; his sister-in-law, Linda Dotzler, Aitkin; and numerous nephews and nieces.

    Burial will be in St. John’s Cemetery in Cedarbrook.
