In the 1920 census, he is a drayman living with his family in the village of Dennison in Goodhue County.

In the 1930 census, he was a 60 year-old widower in Warsaw Twp living with his children Edward, 22, Beatrice M., 15, and Vernon L., 10.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday, July 19, at the Vang Church east of Dennison for Erick Svien who passed away at the Mineral Springs Sanatorium, July 15, at the age of 78 years. The Reverend Adolph Egge officiated. Pallbearers were: Clarence, John and Bernard Svien, Iver and Erick Ellingboe and Melvin Kasa. Mrs. Adolph Egge sang two songs at the service. Interment was at the Vang cemetery. Erick Svien was born in Warsaw township on Nov. 20, 1869. He was the son of the late John and Betsy Svien, pioneer residents of the community. On December 15, 1921, he was united in marriage to Lavina Johnson, also of this neighborhood. To them were born four children: John of Farmington, Mrs. Ed Kimbrel (Beatrice) of St. Paul, Vernon of St. Peter and Edward of Cannon Falls. He is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Anna Tasa and three grandchildren. Mr. Svien spent his whole life in this community and leaves a large number of friends.

Northfield News Apr/1985 Ivar Johan Ellingboe, 77, formerly of the Dennison area, died Monday, April 8, 1985, at the Dilley Unit of Northfield Hospital where he had resided 7 1/2 years. Ellingboe was born Feb. 3, 1908, at Dennison, the son of Erick and Johanna (Svien) Ellingboe. He attended rural Goodhue County schools and as an adult, farmed near Dennison. He was known for his special love for animals. He farmed as long as his health permitted. He never married. He was a life-long member of Vang Lutheran Church. Surviving him are a brother, Edward of Dennison; a sister, Amanda Egland of Northfield Retirement Center; a sister-in-law, Doris Ellingboe of Northfield; a niece, Karen Schuette (Mrs. Dale) of Northfield; a nephew, Arlie Egland of Dennison. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Erick. A funeral service was held April 11 at Vang Lutheran Church with the Rev. Curtis Schneider officiating. Ruth Hinderaker was the organist and special music was presented by the Dilley Unit staff. Burial was at Vang Lutheran Cemetery. Pallbearers were Dale Schuette, Arnold Ellingboe, Arlie Egland, Carroll Bestul, Myron Heggedahl, and Morris Johnson. Arrangements were handled by Benson Funeral Home.

With the exception of his time in the U.S. Army, he lived and farmed on the family farm east of Dennison all his life until moving into Northfield three years ago. He retired from farming in 1977. Arlie Duwain Egland, age 79, of rural Dennison, died Sunday, Feb. 28, 2010, at his home.

Arlie was born Aug. 18, 1930, in Northfield, the son of Arthur and Amanda (Ellingboe) Egland. He attended the Dennison Country School through eighth grade and graduated from Northfield High School. Following school he joined the U.S. Army and served during the Korean Conflict. He then returned to Dennison and farmed. Arlie married Carole Messelt and they later divorced.

Arlie farmed for many years with his father, Art, and then with his son, Duwain. They raised crops, turkeys, hogs and dairy cattle. He also worked at Malt-O-Meal in Northfield for many years from where he retired.

Arlie enjoyed traveling, especially to Arizona and Nevada. He also enjoyed the casino; dancing, especially to polka music; playing cards with the "boys" in Dennison every morning at the City Hall; and visiting with his friends, neighbors and family. He was also a baker and known for his krumkake and lefse.

Arlie is survived by son, Duwain of Dennison; daughters, Vivian Bluhm (fiancée Jim Nystuen) of Northfield, Nancy (Dick) Graupman of Cannon Falls, and Susan Egland of Northfield; and grandson, Trent Egland. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 4, 2010, at the Bierman Funeral Home in Northfield. Interment will be in Vang Cemetery will full military honors.
