    Leonard Soine, 95, of Clara City, formerly of the Maynard area, died Saturday, May 9, 2015 at the Clara City Care Center. Visitation was held on Tuesday evening from 5-7 p.m. followed by the memorial service at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 13, all at the Maynard Lutheran Church.

    Leonard Orien Soine was born on October 6, 1919, in Wang Township, near Maynard, the son of Martin and Eva Soine. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Wang Lutheran Church, attended country school and graduated from high school in Maynard.

    Leonard proudly served his country in the United States Navy from April 24, 1945 to April 19, 1946. He was united in marriage to Dorothy Formo on June 20, 1945.

    Leonard and Dorothy farmed near Maynard until 1964. In 1965, they moved into Maynard and Leonard began his employment with the United States Postal Service as a rural mail carrier.

    Among his many interests, Leonard enjoyed all kinds of animals, loved to hunt, feed and watch birds, take country drives in his red Dodge pickup truck and play pinochle. He enjoyed spending time with his family, visiting with his many friends, mowing the lawn and up until 1990, working on the home farm clearing the grove with his chain saw and truck. He also had a deep love and admiration for horses and was the oldest living member of the Maynard American Legion. As a young man, Leonard also did a lot of trapping for skunk, raccoon, mink and other animals for spending money.

    Surviving family include his children: Bruce (Carol) Soine of Maynard, Mark (Lois) Soine of Montevideo, Curtis (Paula) Soine of Granite Falls, Sara (Myron) Hoogheem of Clark, SD and Steven (Kristen) Soine of Victoria; his sister Constance Johnson of Spring Lake Park; 12 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.

    Preceding Leonard in death were his parents; his wife Dorothy; his son Jon; a granddaughter Kyanna and a brother, Merrill.

    Jon Alan Soine was born September 20, 1959, the son of Leonard & Dorothy Soine, in Granite Falls. He was baptized on November 15, 1959 at Wang Lutheran Church.

    Jon was diagnosed with a brain tumor around the 3rd grade. He spent many months at the University of Minnesota, where he had a shunt put in his head and underwent radiation to kill the tumor.

    He was confirmed in the Lutheran faith on May 4, 1975.

    He spent his summers picking weeds, bailing hay, swimming and riding horse. Jon graduated from the Maynard High School in 1978. Following high school, Jon worked for his brother Bruce. He enjoyed bow hunting, fishing, trail riding and visiting with Grandma Grace. Jon later went back to school and attended the Granite Falls Vo-Tech for auto body. He worked for YMC Motors in Granite Falls and then Swenson Motors in Willmar. Jon’s last job was with the Pretzel Factory in Clara City, where he worked for nine years on the night shift.

    Jon loved to ride his horse Sox. Jon and his family raised him from a colt. Sox and Jon led the Maynard 4th of July Parade for many years.

    Jon moved into the Clara City Care Center on April 10, 2000 after suffering from side effects of the intense radiation he received as a child. He passed away on Thursday, October 15, 2009 at the Clara City Care Center. He was 50 years of age.

    He is survived by his father Leonard of Maynard; four brothers: Bruce (Carol) of Maynard; Curt (Paula) of Granite Falls; Mark (Lois) of Montevideo; Steve (Kris) of Victoria; one sister: Sara (Myron) Hoogheem of Clark, South Dakota; six nieces and six nephews and six great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother.
