Gilbert Sunset Loe was born May 6, 1916 to Gilbert O. and Selma (Sunset) Loe in Grimstad Township, Roseau County Minnesota.

He attended Grimstad school and graduated from Roseau High School in 1933.  He attended Hanson School in Fargo one winter where he learned how to repair engines, a skill he used all of his life.

He was united in marriage to Pearl Brinkman on June 21, 1941 at the home of her parents.   They lived together on their farm in Grimstad Township for 68 years.  Their daughter, Carol Elaine, was born on December 6, 1944.

He had dairy cows and farmed together with his brothers, Manfred and Walter.  In 1956 he sold the cows because of Pearl's allergies, and beef cattle replaced the milk cows.  Bussing began at the Wannaska Consolidated School district in 1947 and he was one of the first drivers; a job that he enjoyed and told many stories about.  While driving school students to Roseau High School he worked as a mechanic at Jackson Pontiac-Buick in Roseau.  After more than 15 years as a bus driver he hauled milk for the Roseau milk drying plant until he had the opportunity to work for the Minnesota State Highway Department in road maintenance.  He and Pearl moved to Crookston for two years and then transferred to Roseau where he continued his work with the Minnesota Department of Transportation until his retirement on December 30, 1980.

He was a lay preacher and led worship services in many churches in the area.  He was named Roseau County Senior Citizen in 1994.  He led Sunday morning worship at the Northland Threshing Bee, and was honored for his many years of service to them in 2010.  He sold insurance for Roseau County Mutual for 32 years.  He and Pearl were very involved with the Four Seasons Senior Center in Roseau; having a new building was a milestone in their activity with Four Seasons.  Lefse making and countless other activities at the Center filled their days. He was a lifelong member of Riverside Lutheran Church where he was the head usher for many years as well as participated in many other activities of the church.

He and Pearl enjoyed traveling, including two trips to Norway.  In 1998 they traveled there with Selmer and Carol and visited the homes of  his grandparents.  They also had many trips while Pearl was involved with the Women's Christian Temperance Union on the local, state, national and world level.  The farm was always the best place and he lived there until he was 98 years old.  In 2014 he became a resident of Oak Crest Senior Housing in Roseau and in September, 2016 he moved to LifeCare Roseau Manor.  There he died on March 24, 2017.

He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Selmer Moen of Minot, ND. granddaughter, Kari R. Moen and fiance' Jim Tengesdal of Minot, ND;  grandson Selmer John Loe Moen and his wife, Becky, of Minnetrista, MN;  great-grandchildren, Harrison and Josephine Moen of Minnetrista, MN;  brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Robert and Melva Brinkman of Roseau, MN; special friend Arlene Carlson, Roseau;  and many nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.  He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Pearl, brothers Manfred and Walter, nephew Michael M. He and Melva Jenson were married in 1952 and remained together for the next 61 years. Walter loved his family and was extremely proud of each of his family members.

He enjoyed several hobbies which included reloading ammunition and hunting in Wyoming with his sons. He was also a licensed amateur radio operator. A dream come true for him was getting his private pilot’s license and having his own planes and airstrip. Restoring old tractors also gave him many years of pleasant pastime.

What Walter enjoyed most over the years was the opportunity the Lord gave him to serve as a lay pastor throughout the area. James “Jim” Loe, 66 year old resident of Royalton, MN passed away Wednesday, August 21, 2019 while camping with his brother and friends in the mountains of Colorado. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Wednesday, August 28, 2019, at Shelley Funeral Chapel in Little Falls, MN with Rev. Wayne Hjermstad officiating. Steve Hoffer officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will take place at Mickinock Cemetery in Roseau MN.

Jim was born and raised on a dairy farm just outside of Roseau, MN where he learned to appreciate an honest day’s labor by helping in all aspects of running the family farm. The enjoyment he gleaned from working with his hands would show up again and again throughout his life as many of his hobbies included: woodworking, gardening, building two-story tree houses for his grandkids, and taking apart and putting back together almost every car and tractor he ever owned. Jim loved to talk, as anyone who ever met him found out, but his disarming personality made you feel like you were a good friend who had known him his whole life.

After finishing high school in Roseau, Jim attended AFLBS and later went to school for carpentry. He would meet, fall in love with, and later marry Sandi (née Olson) on June 23, 1973. For nearly half a century, Sandi was his best friend and will always be the love of his life. The couple would raise their daughters Dawn and Amanda in Colorado, surrounded by the beautiful landscapes they loved to explore when camping, hunting, or both. In 1998, Jim and Sandi moved to Royalton, MN where they lived from then on.

Jim is survived by his wife, Sandi (née Olson); mother, Melva Loe (née Jenson); daughters and sons-in-law, Dawn (Aaron) Raff of St. Cloud, MN and Amanda (Joseph) Raiche of Vermillion, SD; brother, Paul Loe; sister, Mary Lund (née Loe); and nine grandchildren, Cassie, Ben, Adeline, Victor, Beth, Carissa, Caleb, Andrew, and Isaac.

Jim was preceded in death by his father, Walter Loe.

James married Sandra Kay OLSON on 23 Jun 1973 in Roseau County, Minnesota. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
