She is the Hazel Schwartzwald of Alexandria, “sister-in-law” mentioned in the obit of 88 year old Janice Schwartzwald who died in Pine City, Minnesota on 28 September 2011.

Hazel Angeline Schwartzwald, 97, of Vasa, formerly of Alexandria, passed away Friday, January 22, 2021 at her daughter’s residence.  She was born July 18, 1923 in Sunburg, MN to Sam and Lila (Ellingboe) Mortenson.  She attended schools in Sunburg, and worked for a short time at Moen and Grandrud Grocery Store.  She married Edmund Schwartzwald on December 24, 1944 in Santa Monica, CA.  After he was honorable discharged from the service they moved to Litchfield for a short time, then in 1947 moved to Osakis, until 1965 when they moved to Alexandria.  She was a member at First Lutheran Church in Alexandria.  For the past 10 years she has been living with her daughter near Vasa.  She enjoyed baking, cooking, knitting, crocheting, fishing and playing cards.

She is survived by her daughters, Connie Gillis of Vasa, Sharon (Bruce) Olson of Vasa; six grandchildren, Edmund (Erica) of Kasson, Kyle (Paula) of Vasa, Andrea of Lake City, Dana (Jennifer) of Coronado, CA, Blake (Erin) of Roseville, Brock (Andrea) of Stillwater; 14 great grandchildren, Lydia, Peter, Timothy, Braeden, Owyne, Mikyle, Beibhinn, Max, Emma, Laken, Holden, Clay, Isaac, Claire.  She is preceded in death by her parents, Sam and Lila; sister, Georgine; husband, Ed; infant son, Edmund Jr.; great granddaughter, Katherine.

A graveside service will take place this spring at Kinkead Cemetery in Alexandria, MN.  Memorials are preferred to the First Lutheran Church in Alexandria.
