  1. 1.  Charles Edgar CARR was born on 23 Oct 1892 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada; died on 29 Dec 1960 in Los Angeles County, California; was buried on 3 Jan 1961 in Rose Hills Memorial Park, Whittier, Los Angeles County, California.

    Notes:

In the 1905 Minnesota state census, Charles, 12, Francis, 9, and Ruth, 6, were living in Minneapolis with a large number of other young children in what must have been an orphanage at 3200 Stevens Avenue.

In the 1910 census, Charles E. Carr, age 18 and single, was a carpenter in the building trade. He is shown as a lodger living at 716 6th Avenue North in Minneapolis. His father is shown as having been born in England but with Irish as his father’s native language. Charles’s mother is shown as also having been born in England but with English as her native language.

In this same census, Charles E. is shown as living at home with his mother and sisters, age 17, no occupation.

Charles is recorded a third time in that 1910 census as the 18 year-old Charles E Carr living with his father Charles E Carr in Mason City, Iowa. The younger Charles is a house carpenter and came to the U.S. in 1891.

Registered for the draft on June 5, 1917, in Minneapolis. At that time, he was married with one child and was living at 3721 23rd Avenue in Minneapolis. He was employed as a driver by the Troy Laundry Company of Minneapolis. He claimed to have already served in U. S. Navy for four years, attaining the rank of seaman. He claimed exemption from the draft because of need to support family. He is described as of medium height and build with blue eyes and light hair.

In the 1920 census, C. E. Carr and family were living at 4945 30th Avenue South in Minneapolis in a house they owned but with a mortgage. The family consisted of C.E., 27, Mina, 24, C.E. Jr., 3 and 2/12, and Audrey, 1 and some months. Also living with the family was Mina’s widowed mother, Christina Michaelson, age 60. The senior C.E. came to this country in 1900 and was naturalized in 1917. Everyone was born in Minnesota except the senior C.E. who was born in Canada. The senior C.E.’s father was born in England, his mother in France. Mina’s parents were born in Norway. The senior C.E. was a moulder in a steel works.

In the 1930 census, Charles E. Carr lived with his new family in Grand Forks, North Dakota. He was a commercial traveler for a biscuit company. The household consisted of Charles, 37, Ethel, 34, their daughter Ethel Marie, 10 months, and Ethel’s daughters from an earlier marriage: Winona Murry, 16, and Margaret Murry, 12.

In the 1940 census, Charles Carr, age 46, and his wife Ether, age 44, and daughter Ethel, age 11, live in a rented residence in Colton in San Bernardino County, California. This is the same house in which they all lived in 1935. Charles is a moulder in a foundry. He earned $800 in 1939.

He registered for the World War II draft in California. At that time he was living at 472 Harper Street, Downey, Los Angeles, California. He gave “Dr. Enge” of Bismark, North Dakota, as the person who would always know his address. He was employed by Los Angeles Steel Casting.

The PACF Family Tree has him dying in Downey, Los Angeles County, California, on 29 Dec 1960. An obit in the 1 Jan 1961 edition of the Los Angeles Times confirms this. This death is not in the California Death Index.

His obit notes that he had been a resident of California for 26 years and was, or had been, an employee of the Los Angeles County School System. His obit lists two other daughters, Winona and Margaret, who may be step-daughters.

From the symbol on his gravestone, it appears he was a Mason.
