  1. 1.  Charles Edgar CARR was born on 14 Mar 1854 in London, England; died on 9 Oct 1922 in Hennepin County, Minnesota.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • MN Death Cert Checked: Y
    • Minnesota Death Certificate: 1922-MN-005134

    Notes:

According to Mike, a Charles Edgar Carr, b. 1854, was arrested with his cousin Harriet for larceny and receiving stolen goods in 1882. He was also arrested in 1878 for forgery and again in 1883 for larceny in a dwelling. He got a five year sentence for the 1883 offense. When he was released, he married Eliza, who was already pregnant with their first daughter, and left for Canada at the end of 1888.

At the time of his marriage to Eliza Ada Burridge, he was a 32 year-old bachelor clerk living at 90 Blueton Road.

In the 1900 census (June 1st), the Charles E. Carr family was living at 1917 Hillside Avenue in Minneapolis in a house that he rented. The family consisted of Charles E. Carr, 46 (born Mar 1854), a stenographer, Ada E., 28 (born Jan 1872), Sarah A., 11 (born Dec 1888), May Marie, 9 (born June 1890), Charles, 7 (born October 1892), Frances, 4 (born June 1895), and Ruth L., 1 (born November 1898). Charles and Ada were both born in England and had been married for 12 years. Ada had borne 5 children, all still living. Charles had come to this country in 1888; no similar information is shown for Ada or the children. Sarah is shown as having been born in England. May Marie and Charles were born in English Canada, and Frances and Ruth in Minnesota.

In the 1905 state census, he was living alone on Clark Avenue in White Bear in Ramsey County. He was a contractor and builder. His three youngest children, Charles, 12, Francis, 9, and Ruth, 6, were living in Minneapolis with a large number of other young children in what must have been an orphanage at 3200 Stevens Avenue.

In the 1910 census, he and his son are living in Mason City, Iowa, as lodgers in the home of a private family. The older Charles, age 55, is an architect in the building trade and is shown to be married for the 2nd time although no wife is identifiable in the household. The younger Charles, age 18, is a house carpenter. Both came to the U.S. in 1891.

He is probably the Charles Carr who died in West Minneapolis in 1922. That will be assumed in the information included here. That Charles Carr was born in England in 1852. He was a draftsman and the informant for his death certificate, Albert Moore, was apparently unsure whether Charles was married or divorced. Charles died of senility and arteriosclerosis. His body was donated to the anatomy department of the university although there was a “personal” burial on October 17th. This older Charles is not in the 1920 census. It is possible that Charles was a patient at an asylum.

Charles married Eliza Ada BURRIDGE on 1 Apr 1888 in London, England. Eliza (daughter of William Frederick BURRIDGE) was born on 22 Jan 1871 in England; died on 25 Mar 1941 in Hennepin County, Minnesota; was buried on 28 Mar 1941 in Sunset Memorial Park, Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota. In the 1910 census, Charles E. Carr, age 18 and single, was a carpenter in the building trade. He is shown as a lodger living at 716 6th Avenue North in Minneapolis. His father is shown as having been born in England but with Irish as his father’s native language. Charles’s mother is shown as also having been born in England but with English as her native language.

In this same census, Charles E. is shown as living at home with his mother and sisters, age 17, no occupation.

Charles is recorded a third time in that 1910 census as the 18 year-old Charles E Carr living with his father Charles E Carr in Mason City, Iowa. The younger Charles is a house carpenter and came to the U.S. in 1891.

Registered for the draft on June 5, 1917, in Minneapolis. At that time, he was married with one child and was living at 3721 23rd Avenue in Minneapolis. He was employed as a driver by the Troy Laundry Company of Minneapolis. He claimed to have already served in U. S. Navy for four years, attaining the rank of seaman. His obit notes that he had been a resident of California for 26 years and was, or had been, an employee of the Los Angeles County School System. His obit lists two other daughters, Winona and Margaret, who may be step-daughters.

The Minneapolis Tribune’s 25 Feb 1915 edition featured a photo of Frances with a story headlined “Young Wife, Missing Five Days, Returns to her Mother’s Home.” Frances had stayed with a friend for five days, unhappy with her treatment at the hands of her husband and too proud to return to her mother’s home. The article says that “late in 1912, Frances Carr was a student at West High when Frank Augustine appeared at her mother’s home in answer to an advertisement for a roomer. He lived there until February 3, 1913, when the pair eloped and were married in St. Paul.” Frances’s mother said that they would “start divorce action against Mr. Augustine immediately.” The article never mentioned that Frances would have been five months pregnant at the time of her disappearance.

In the 1920 census, Bill is listed as the adopted son of 48 year-old Ada Marsh, a widow living with her two daughters, one granddaughter, Bill (age 4 and 8/12) and two female lodgers at 1619 Park Avenue. The two lodgers are Frances Mincke, age 24, and Ruth Kirbach, age 21. Ada and Frances are shown as widows; Ruth is shown as married.

In the 1930 census, William C. Marsh, 14, is living at 1619 Park Avenue South with his grandmother, Eliza A.

In the 1934 Minneapolis city directory, he is listed as William C, salesman, residing at 1619 Park Ave.

At the time of his Iowa marriage in October of 1934, he was a salesman living at 3344 Stevens Avenue S.

He and Vivian took out a marriage license in Minneapolis on July 29, 1935.

In the 1936 Minneapolis city directory, he is listed as William C, wife Vivian M, manager of Acme Bicycle Supply Co, and residing at 4228 Minnehaha.

In the 1937 city directory, he is William C, wife Vivian M, branch manager for Acme Bicycle & Supply Co., residing at 4228 Minnehaha. In that same directory, he is also listed as William S Marsh, a clerk for Maurice E Carlson, residing at 4228 Minnehaha Ave.

In the 1938 and 1939 city directories, he is William C, wife Vivian M, manager of Acme Bicycle & Supply Co., living at 4228 Minnehaha.

In the 1940 city directory, William C Marsh has “moved to Luverne Minn.”

In the 1940 census, dated April 17th, Bill and Vivian are shown as living at 4901 28th Avenue S in a rented half of a duplex for which they paid $45/month. This duplex was built in 1939, the other part being 2805 49th Street, and both sets of occupants were renters in the 1940 census. Bill was the informant for the information on the census form. He was a manager in the retail and wholesale bicycle industry. No occupation is listed for Vivian. Both he and Vivian were high-school graduates. Bill earned $1800 in 1939, Vivian earned $500.

According to Cora’s diary, Bill left for Delaware the next day, April 18th. Bill must have come back in the mean time because he left again on April 30th. Vivian left on May 4th. Bill and Viv and Ronald came back to Minnesota on August 14th. They stayed for 12 days, during which time they had Ronald baptized.

He is not listed in the 1950 city directory.

He and his family are not listed in the 1950 census.

He may be the William C. Marsh and wife involved in a car accident at Hwy 7 and Baker Road on 15 Nov 1950 during rain and fog. The wife had minor injuries and was treated at Swedish Hospital.

He may be the William Marsh, Williston Park, who was president of the Minnetonka Recreational Association in the Minnetonka Mills area, as reported in the Star on 19 Nov 1951.

By August of 1953, Bill is an accountant at Dahlberg Brothers Ford and is a member of the Twin Cities Automotive Accounts Association.

His obituary notes that he was 48 and resided at 14508 Idylewood Road which was in Minnetonka. His funeral was at St. David’s Episcopal Church, Minnetonka Mills.

The court records of the 1964-1965 legal dispute between Dahlberg Ford (dba Dahlberg Brothers, Inc.) and Ford Motor Co. reveal that Bill was one-ninth owner of Dahlberg Ford (the other eight-ninths owned by Earl Dahlberg) and that he had owned that percentage of the company since 1957.
