In the 1910 census, Elling H. Lee and family were living at 776 or 770 West 4th Street in the 2nd ward of the City of Superior, Wisconsin. Elling does drilling in the iron mining industry. Elling owns his home, with a mortgage, and the home is a house, not a farm.

The 1910 census-taker (Harry L. Whitney) must have had a hard time understanding because Mary is shown as born in Iowa as were both of her parents! Similarly, Elling’s parents were also born in Iowa. “Norway” must have sounded like “Iowa” to Mr. Whitney.

In the 1920 census, Elling H. Lee, 48, was farming, on a farm he owned albeit with a mortgage, in the Town of Superior, Douglas County, Wisconsin. The family consisted of Mary, 45, Harry O., 23, Floyd M., 21, Ella F., 19, Ivan B., 15, Lillian, 13, and Annie I., 11. Harry and Floyd were born in Minnesota, Ella, Ivan, and Lillian in North Dakota, and Annie in Wisconsin.

In the 1930 census, Elling and his family were living at 25 North First St. W. in Omak, Okanogan County, in the state of Washington. They were renting their home, with a rent payment of $15 per month. Their household was not living on a farm and the domicile did have a radio. Members of the household: Elling H. Lee, 57 (born in Minnesota, married at age 23), his wife Mary, 55 (born in Norway, emigrated in 1883, a naturalized citizen, married at age 20), their son Ivan, 25 (born in North Dakota and currently attending school), their son-in-law William H. Sprowl, 38 (first married at age 29, born in Kansas as were his parents), William's wife, and Elling and Mary's daughter, Ella F., 29 (first married at age 21, born in North Dakota), and William and Ella's children: Margaret E., 7, Della M., 6, Harvey C., 4, Mary Lou, 3, and Herbert L., 1. All the children were born in Washington and the oldest two are shown as attending school. Elling is a carpenter in the building industry and William is a lumberman with a lumber camp. Both men are unemployed. (Ella would have been pregnant with Ruth at the time of the census interview.)

In the 1940 census, he and Mary lived in Omak. He was a janitor for a public school. He had an eighth-grade education, Mary had one year of college.

Ilone says: Elling worked as a steam engineer, bought and sold grain, raised apples, and had numerous other jobs. He was always very dignified and was quite independent. He was a Mason for over 50 years and was a loyal member of the Presbyterian church. He loved our dog Laddie and came by to spend time with the dog nearly every day.
