- MN Death Cert Checked: Y
- Minnesota Death Certificate: 1926-MN-008958
- Confirmation: 26 Sep 1869, Søndre Land, Oppland, Norway
Notes:
If we go by the biography in the History of Mower County, he and Ragnild were married on December 29 of some year, probably not 1882, probably 1881.
His confirmation entry in the Søndre Land parish record shows that his father was Christian Christiansson and his mother was Karen Olsdatter.
In the 1880 census, Carl C. Skogstad, born in Norway in 1855, is a farm laborer on the farm of Simon Simonson in Frankford Township, Mower County, Minnesota. (In an 1896 land ownership map of Frankford Twp, the Simonson farm is directly north of the C. C. Skogstad farm.)
In 1883, he bought land from Carrie L. Olmsted and husband described as “E half of SE quarter of Section 8 and North half of NE quarter of Sec 17, all in town 103, range 14.”
In the 1885 state census he is C.C. Skogstad living with his wife and son in Frankford Twp.
In the 1895 state census he and his wife and three children live in Frankford Twp. He has been in Minnesota for 18 years.
An 1896 land ownership map shows that Carl’s 160 acre farm consisted of the east half of the southeastern quarter of Section 8 and the north half of the northeast quarter of Section 17. In a 1915 land ownership map, Josephine Olson is shown as owning the 80 acres in Section 17 and the southern 10 acres of the 80 in Section 8 leaving Carl with only a 70 acre farm by that time.
In the 1900 census, Carl, born in January of 1855, and his wife Ragonild (sp?), born in June of 1850, live in Frankford Township, Mower County, Minnesota, on a farm they own, but is mortgaged. They have three children: Clarence, born April, 1882, Ottis, born October, 1886, and Cora or Cara M., born March, 1890. Carl and his wife were born in Norway; all of the children were born in Minnesota. They had been married 19 years and Ragonild had had 3 children, all 3 still living.
Attended his sister’s funeral in 1906. Resided in Grand Meadow, Minnesota. (East of Austin, south southwest of Rochester.)
In the 1910 census, Carl and his family were still in Frankford Township. The family consisted of Carl C. Skogstad, 55, his wife Raginald, 59, and their daughter Cora M., single and 21. Carl and his wife had been married for 30 years. She had had 3 children, all still living.
In the 1920 census (January 10), Carl, 65, and Ragnild, 69, were living with their daughter Cora, 30, and son-in-law, John Jorgens, 35 on a farm in Frankford Township. Carl came to this country in 1872 and Ragnild in 1863. Both were naturalized in 1897. Living next door was Oscar Skogstad, 28, his wife Nora, 25, and their son Clifford, 2 and 5 months. This Oscar may have been related but, apparently, was not a child of Ragnild.
His son-in-law, John Jorgens, was the informant for his death certificate. Carl died of aortic regurgitation. He had quit farming in 1915.
A biography from the History of Mower County published in 1911:
Carl C. Skogstad, one of the supervisors of Frankford township, is a native of Norway, born January 3, 1855, son of Christian and Caren Skogstad, both of whom spent the span of their years in Norway. Carl C. attended the public schools in Norway, and in 1872 came to America. For five years he did farm and saw-mill work in various places, and then came to Frankford township, where he worked out as a farm hand for seven years. In 1884 he purchased 160 acres of land in sections 8 and 17, developed the land, erected a fine home and the necessary outbuildings, and carried on general farming. He has recently sold ninety acres, leaving him seventy which he conducts with much success. He is a Republican and aside from his town office has been director of his school district for several years. He is a stockholder in the Farmers' Co-operative Creamery at Grand Meadow, and also has other holdings. Mr. Skogstad is a member of the M. W. A. and a communicant of the Lutheran church. He was married December 29, 1882, to Regnald Florrend, born in Norway, June 10, 1850, daughter of Olaf and Martha Steffens, who came to America in 1852 and in 1856 located in Frankford. Mr. and Mrs. Skogstad have three children: Clarence was born April 11, 1883, and is a clerk in Grand Meadow; Otis was born October 10, 1886, and is a student at St. Olaf College, Northfield, Minn.; Cora M. was born February 20, 1889, and lives at home.
Carl married Ragnild FLORAND about 1881. Ragnild (daughter of Ole FLORAND and Martha OXNABURG) was born on 10 Jun 1850 in Norway; died on 23 Jun 1936 in Mower County, Minnesota; was buried on 26 Jun 1936 in Bear Creek Lutheran Church Cemetery, Frankford Twp, Mower County, Minnesota.
