Neither of her parents seems to be listed in the 1865 Norwegian census. She is probably the 16 year-old Marthe Olsdatter who is a servant on the Haldor Bredesen farm, “Gjefsen nedre og nord”, in Næs in Gran. There is an Anne Olsdatter, b. 1854, also working there as “Lægdslem paa Gaarden.”

(That Anne is probably not Marte’s sister. That Anne seems to be the one born on June 17, 1854, to Ole Andersen Østiens or Øskiens and Birthe Olsdatter.)

He is the George Gilbertson Karlsrud of Nevis, in Hubbard County, Minnesota, who registered for the draft on 12 Sep 1918 in Park Rapids. He was born 3 Oct 1875 in Norway and was described as of medium height and build with light blue eyes and light brown hair. His nearest relative was his wife, Petra Kristina Karlsrud of Nevis. George was a self-employed farmer.

In the 1920 census, he is indexed as “George Karls Rud” and his wife is “Christinea.” They and their family farm in Nevis Twp, Hubbard County, Minnesota. They and their four oldest children came to the U.S. in 1903.

In the 1930 census (indexed as Rarlsrud), the family still lives in Nevis Twp. Gilbert and the three oldest children no longer live at home.

Died in Red Wing. A George Karlsrud died in Goodhue County on 7 Feb 1939. The informant for his death certificate was Mrs. William Schultz of Mondovi, Wisconsin (his daughter Anne). She had no idea who George’s parents were. George died from pneumonia brought on by stomach cancer.

There was a note on the card that said that his local board was “Wallace” in some illegible county in Idaho. At that time, he was still a “declared alien” and not a citizen of the U. S. He gave his permanent address as the Como Hotel in Spokane but there was a note on the card that said “Mail at Wallace, Idaho” and he gave his occupation as woodsman for the Turner Lumber Company at Tammany Mine, Montana. He listed his nearest relative as George Karlsrud of Neves, Minnesota. He was described as tall and of medium build with blue eyes and light hair.

In the 1920 census, Carl Gilbertson, age 35, is a headman at the Saddler Canyon Lumber Camp in the Priest River Precinct of Bonner County, Idaho. He had come to the U.S. in 1902.

In the 1930 census, Carl Gilbertson, age 45, is a laborer in woods work at the Ohio Match Company’s boarding houses in the Metaline precinct of Pend Oreille County, Washington. He had come to the U.S. in 1902.

He registered for the World War II draft in 1942. At that time, he lived at 1424 W Wilson Avenue in Spokane. He worked for an employer in Orofino, Idaho. He gave, as the “person who will always know your address,” W. J. Johnson of Orofino, Idaho.

He may be the Carl Gilbertson, age 64, who died in Spokane, Washington, on 10 Jan 1949.

In the 1910 census (April 23rd), Oscar Karlsrud, single, age 20, was a hired man on a farm in Hartland Township, Pierce County, Wisconsin. (He is listed on the same census page as his brother Jørgen (George).) He had emigrated from Norway in 1909 and was still an alien at the time of the census.

Oscar registered for the draft on June 5, 1917. He indicated that he was living in Trenton, Pierce County, Wisconsin, and was married with 3 children. He had declared his intention to become a citizen but was not yet a citizen of the U.S. and claimed to be a citizen of Norway. He claimed to have been born in Gran, Hadeland, Norway. He is described as 27 years old, of medium build, medium height, blue eyes and light brown hair.

In the 1920 census (Jan 2 and 3), Oscar Karlsrud, age 30, was living in a rented home in Trenton Township of Pierce County, Wisconsin. The family consisted of Oscar, Julia, age 31, Gilbert, age 6, Raymond, age 4, and Alden, age 2. Oscar’s citizenship status is listed as “Pa” and Julia’s as “Al.” Oscar was a section hand on the railroad.

In the 1930 census (April 28th), Oscar Karlsrud, 40, was living with his family in Eureka Township, Polk County, Wisconsin. The family consisted of Oscar, Julia, 41, Gilbert H., 16, Oscar R., 14, Henry A., 13, and Irene E., 7. The three boys were born in Wisconsin, Irene was born in Minnesota. Oscar came to this country in 1909, Julia in 1911. Oscar is a dairy farmer and Gilbert is a farm laborer. Oscar was 22 when he married 23-year-old Julia.

In the 1940 census (indexed as Karlasude), he was a farmer in Eureka Twp, Polk County. He had an 8th grade education and had made $1000 the previous year. Gilbert and Raymond still lived at home.

In the 1956 St. Paul city directory, he lives at 1240 7th Avenue S, the home of his daughter and son-in-law.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He enlisted in Eau Claire on 13 April 1942. (BIRLS says 22 Jan 1942.) He was released 23 Jan 1945 or 1946. Navy Muster rolls show he was on the Chicopee in September of 1945.

He is the most likely of the three brothers to have fathered a daughter, conceived in March of 1946 in Minneapolis.

Raymond and Alden moved to the Pacific Northwest after WWII and worked as loggers. They had little contact with the rest of the family after the war.

In August of 1957, he was charged with driving while intoxicated. He was fined $200 and sentenced to five days in jail.

He apparently was a Flathead National Forest employee. He is recorded as participating in a Red Cross First Aid class given to Flathead National Forest employees.

His Montana Death Certificate shows that he was divorced.

His address in Kalispell when he died was 215 2nd Avenue W.

His obit said that he would be given military graveside rites by a local veterans organization. He moved to the Flathead Valley in 1946 where he worked for the U.S. Forest Service until his retirement due to ill health.

His obit did not mention his surviving brother, Alden.

In the 1940 census, he was Alden Karlsrude, a hired hand on the John Stiles farm in Wheatfield Twp, Grand Forks County, North Dakota. Five years earlier, he had lived in rural Polk County, Wisconsin.

He served in the U.S. Army in World War II in the 263rd Infantry. He is recorded as arriving in the port of New York on October 30, 1945, on a ship which had sailed from Marseille. He was recorded as Aldon H Karlsrude, T Sgt. He was discharged from the U.S. Army at Camp McCoy in Wisconsin on 6 Nov 1945.

He or one of his brothers fathered a daughter, conceived in March of 1945 in Minneapolis.

Raymond and Alden moved to the Pacific Northwest after WWII and worked as loggers. They had little contact with the rest of the family after the war.

He and Anita Schlegel were the witnesses to his brother Raymond’s marriage to Nora Neese. Alden and Anita may have married but there is no record of it.

In April of 1947, the Missoula newspaper reported that in Kalispell Alden Karlsrude and another man had been charged with disturbing the peace. Each was fined $25.
