5. | Jerry Wynn SAGEN (2.John2, 1.Clarence1) was born on 16 Jul 1944 in Washington; died on 2 Dec 2016 in Oregon. Notes:
Jerry Wynn Sagen was born July 16, 1944, in Centralia Washington and passed away peacefully December 2, 2016, in Eugene after a 13 year battle with prostate cancer. He was the fourth of seven children born to John and Myrtle Sagen. His father's work as an Army Corps of Engineers land surveyor mandated that the family moved often throughout Washington and Oregon, before finally settling in Eugene. Jerry attended Jefferson Junior High and was a 1962 graduate of South Eugene High School. He graduated from the University of Oregon in 1970 with a bachelor's degree in biology. In 1973 he obtained his real estate license and eventually opened Sagen Company Realtors. Through the years, Jerry was on many state and local real estate committees, and was president of the Multiple Listing service in 1995-1996. He worked as the principal broker of John L Scott, until his retirement.
Jerry was a natural and gifted athlete. He was a U of O weightlifting and state of Oregon arm wrestling champion. Although never having the opportunity to play high school athletics, Jerry became a member of the 1966 and 1967 University of Oregon football teams. He also played city league basketball, softball and flag football. His passion in later years was golf, and at one time he had a 3.3 handicap. He was a long time member of Shadow Hills Country Club.
As a loyal Duck, Jerry had season tickets to football and basketball for years. He was an excellent fundraiser for the athletic department, and a member and past president (1989) of Oregon Club.
Jerry was intellectual, persistent, and loved science. One of his greatest achievements was successfully taking on the large pharmaceutical company, doctor and clinic responsible for his wife Mary's death in 1995. His fight against medical mistakes was featured on the Oprah Winfrey show and written about in the Eugene Register Guard, along with mention in magazines and books. His persistence continued in his battle against prostate cancer, where he spent countless hours on the internet to educate himself on the latest research. He participated in several experimental treatments and two drug trials. Most recently he made the difficult and painful journey to the University of Heidelberg Hospital, Germany, for a groundbreaking nuclear medicine cure, PSMA-therapy. This eliminated his pain, but sadly his cancer was already advanced, and he became too weak to continue treatment.
Jerry loved to tell a good joke; no one enjoyed it more or laughed harder than he did. He appreciated a good cup of coffee, a glass of chardonnay with French bread, shopping for the perfect cashmere sweater, watching sports and Jeopardy, and adored all animals, especially his beloved cat Bentley. He traveled often to Hawaii and Europe, and was most fond of Paris, enjoying the beauty of the architecture, although he decided Rome was a close second, and the food in Italy the best! Recently he married his favorite travel partner, best friend and love of 10 years, Joan Stuart.
More than anything, Jerry loved his daughter Kimberly Sagen. He is survived by her, his wife, Joan, brother Jack, sisters Jayne Fortt, Jean Bennett (Ron Farmer), Janet Sagen (Don Driscoll), and Judy Sagen, his aunt Eileen Erickson, and former wife Sharon Kranc (Jerry 2), plus much loved nieces, nephews, cousins, and Joan's two sons, Rick and Blake, and their families. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary, his parents, and sister Joan Miles.
Jerry had a fabulous sense of humor and was loved by many for his wit, intellect and kindness. He will be missed beyond words.
