  1. 1.  Vilhjølm Vilhelmson BAGGETHUN was born in 1794 in Vang i Valdres, Oppland, Norway; died in 1878 in Vang i Valdres, Oppland, Norway.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Confirmation: 27 Aug 1809, Vang i Valdres, Oppland, Norway

    Notes:

    Born on Bagetun 35.

In the 1865 census, he and Anne and Tina and Gjertrud lived on Baggethun. He was Føderaadsmand in the household of Trond Boiesen, huusfar. Presumably, Trond Bøyessen Stele assumed ownership of the family farm after Ove Vilhjølmsen, previous heir, left for America in 1849. Wilhelm and Anne and their daughters then continued to live on the farm.

Vilhjølm married Anna Ovesdotter BERGE in 1816 in Vang i Valdres, Oppland, Norway. Anna (daughter of Ove Bøyesen WANGENSTEEN and Gerhardine (Tina) Geelmynden ANKER) was born in 1798 in Vang i Valdres, Oppland, Norway; died in 1885 in Vang i Valdres, Oppland, Norway. 1. 2.  Maren Vilhjølmsdotter BAGGETHUN Descendancy chart to this point (1.Vilhjølm1) was born in 1816 in Vang i Valdres, Oppland, Norway; died in 1818 in Vang i Valdres, Oppland, Norway.

  2. 3.  Ove Vilhjelmsson /WILLIAMS WILLIAMSON (BAGGETHUN) Descendancy chart to this point (1.Vilhjølm1) was born on 20 Jan 1819 in Vang i Valdres, Oppland, Norway; died on 13 Aug 1896 in Waupaca County, Wisconsin; was buried in Scandinavia Lutheran Cemetery, Scandinavia Twp, Waupaca County, Wisconsin.

    Notes:

He is named in the church book birth record as the father of Ove O Ellingboe (#3231). However, that is quite unlikely due to the lack of corresponding matches in modern DNA testing results.

Ove Vilhelmson later married and moved his family to America in 1849.

The 1849 date is confirmed by the Digitalarkivet: Migrants from Valdres 1816-67 database. The 30 year-old Ove Vilhelmsen of Bagethun farm in Vang, Valdres, left for America in April of 1849. The notes for the entry say “Amerika - Tilladelse Ifølge Resl Af 6 Febr D. A.” Accompanying him were his wife, Anne Andersdatter, 27, and their two daughters, Anne Ovesdatter, 5, and Berith Ovesdatter, 1 and 1 months. In the church book’s emigration record, Ove and Anne and family left Vang on April 4, 1849.

Probably he is the “Oval Williamson” farming in Muskego, Waukesha County, Wisconsin, in the 1850 census (September 18th). The farm is worth $600. The family consists of Oval Williamson, 43, his wife Ann, 30, and their daughters Ann, 6, and Betsey, 3. They were all born in Norway and the girls had not begun school yet.

In the 1860 census (July 3rd), the family had moved to the town of Scandinavia in Waupaca County, Wisconsin. The family consisted of Over Williamsen, 40, Ann, 40, Ann, 16, Betsey, 12, William, 10, Andrew, 7, Dena, 5, Boga, 2, and Over, 1. The census form notes that the four oldest children attended school and that the children from William on were born in this country. The value of the family’s real estate was $1000 and the value of their personal property was $300.

In the 1870 census (August 9th), the family was still living in Scandinavia, Waupaca County. The family consisted of Ova Williamson, 51, Anna, 50, Anna, 24, Andrew, 17, daughter Dina, 14, son Boie, 12, Edward, 10, and Antone, 8. The real estate is worth $1400 and the family’s personal property is worth $550. Couldn’t find William in the 1870 census.

In the 1880 census (June 21st), the family is still in Scandinavia Township. The household consists of Ove Wilhelmson, 61, Anne, 50, Dinah, 24, and G. Anton, 17. Dinah is noted as being disabled by “female complaints.”

In the 1895 state census (June 20th) the O. Williams household had 4 people: 3 males and one female; 1 foreign born in Scandinavia, 3 born in the U.S. This suggests that his wife wasn’t in the household.

The 1895 biography of his son Buck says this about Ove:

Ove Williamson, was born in Norway, January 20, 1819, was educated in the schools of his native land, and the days of his boyhood and youth were passed upon the farm. His marriage to Miss Annie Kjos took place in Norway in 1844, and five years later, in 1849, he crossed the Atlantic in a sailing vessel to the New World, where he hoped to secure a home and competence. He first located in Muskegon, where he worked as common laborer some three years, coming thence to Waupaca county in 1853. He was one of the first settlers, and is now the second oldest living resident in Scandinavia township. The hardships and trials of pioneer life are familiar to him, and the history of that county is known to him from the days when it was almost unbroken wilderness, inhabited mostly by Indians. He has borne an important part in the work of development, transforming the land from its uncultivated condition into rich and valuable farms. Here he purchased 160 acres of wild land, on which not a furrow had been turned or an improvement made, and successfully continued its cultivation until 1884, when enfeebled health caused him to lay aside business cares, and he is now living a retired life. He worked for many years on the river, rafting logs, and his career has been that of an industrious and energetic man, bringing to him a well-merited competence. He is a stanch Republican in politics and has served in several local offices with credit to himself and satisfaction to his constituents. He filled the office of assessor for twelve years and has also been township treasurer. He and his family are members of the Lutheran Church, Mrs. Williamson, who was born in Norway September 29, 1820, is also yet living. Their children were: Annie, now the wife of August Larson, a resident of Wausau; William, who is living in La Crosse, Wis; Andrew, the efficient sheriff of Waupaca county; Berit, deceased; Denah; Boie, subject of this sketch, Edward Ove, of Waupaca; Anton G., a farmer of Scandinavia township; and Lewis B., deceased.

He died and was buried as O Williams.

The 1889 plat map of Scandinavia Twp, and the 1912 land ownership map shows a 120 acre parcel owned by “Ove Williamson.” The farm was probably being run by Anton and Dena in 1912. The parcel is defined as the eastern half of the northeast quarter of Section 18 and the northeast quarter of the southeast quarter of Section 18. Today, this parcel is about three miles west of the village of Scandinavia and about 4 miles northeast of Amherst. The parcel is nearly bisected by County Road B and its western boundary is, in part, Gilman Road. The Tomorrow River State Trail (on the old Green Bay and Western railroad right-of-way) is just south of the parcel. The portion of the parcel north of County Road B is now forest. The current location of the farmhouse (on the south side of County Road B, about 750 feet east of Gilman Road) appears to be where it was in 1912.

The Wisconsin Land Patent Database shows three parcels for Ove in Section 18:

    1) 40 acres in 23N, 11E, granted to Ove Wilhelmsen through the Stevens Point land office on 15 Dec 1855.
    2) 40 acres in 23N, 11E, granted to Ove Wilhelmsen through the Stevens Point land office on 1 Sep 1856.
    3) 40 acres in 23N, 11E, granted to Ove Williamson through the Wausau land office on 20 Mar 1875.

The June, 1895 Wisconsin state census for Waupaca County showed Andrew Williams’ household had 4 males, 3 females, all 7 born in the United States. He was the Waupaca County sheriff at about that time.

There is a biographical sketch of Andrew in the 1895 history of the upper Wisconsin River counties.

The facts and events shown here assume that Ove’s son Andrew is the Andrew Williams living on Maple Street in Waupaca in the 1900 census. He was a railroad officer.

Could not find him in Waupaca in the 1905 state census.

In the 1908 Bellingham, Washington, city directory, he is Andrew Williams, sheriff of Whatcom County, living at the Whatcom County Courthouse.

In the 1910 and 1911 Bellingham city directories, he is a deputy U.S. Marshal living at 1513 E.

In the 1910 census, that Andrew was a widower living on E Street in Bellingham, Whatcom County, Washington. Living with him was Bert, 23, a railroad clerk, Lynde, 21, no occupation, and Esther, 17, no occupation. Andrew is a U. S. Marshal.

A telegram telling of his death was received by W. W. Fairburn.

Mr. Williams had lived in Bellingham for many years and was esteemed by hundreds of Bellingham residents. He was one of the county’s most popular violinists of the old school, delighting to play for old-time dances. He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Esther Day, and one son, Lynde Williams, now at Okanogan. Mr. Williams was a member of the Bellingham Bay Lodge, No. 44, F, & A. M. The remains will be received Friday night by O. R. Hollingsworth.

Commemorative Biographical Record of the Upper Wisconsin Counties: Waupaca, Portage, Wood, Marathon, Oneida, Vilas, Langlade and Shawano” by Chicago: J. H. Beers & Co. 1895

Boie Williams, familiarly known as “Buck” Williams is one of the prosperous leading business men and substantial citizens of Iola, Waupaca county.

Mr. Williams was born December 24, 1857, in Scandinavia township, Waupaca county. His father, Ove Williamson, was born in Norway, January 20, 1819, was educated in the schools of his native land, and the days of his boyhood and youth were passed upon the farm.

Our subject attended the rude district schools of the home neighborhood up to the age of fifteen years, when he left the school room and began work as a farm hand, as his services were not needed at home. For one year he was thus employed, receiving $12 per month, and on the expiration of that time he began learning harness making with Andrew Moberg, of Amherst, Wis., where he worked for three years, going thence to Wausau, Wis., being employed at his trade Ernest Felling. After spending two years in Wausau Mr. Williams returned to Scandinavia township, where he followed his trade; but as work was dull and scarce he hired out as a farm hand to a Mr. Turner, of Belmont township, Portage Co., Wis. Later he went to Winona, Minn., where he remained for one year, and then secured the position as driver of a creamery wagon in High Forest, that State. Subsequently he and his brother Andrew (afterward sheriff of Waupaca county) took up new farms in Faulk county, S. Dak., which section was then very wild and unsettled. Besides the improvements they made on their own homestead they also did “breaking” for others, their home during this time being in a little shanty out on the prairie, where our subject acted as cook. At the end of a year, however, he returned to High Forest, where he again drove a wagon for the creamery, being engaged thus for some time.

While there Mr. Williams was united in marriage, in September, 1886, with Miss Clara Juelson. By her marriage she has become the mother of four children, all of whom are still living-Arthur J., Edwin M., Walter L. and Clara A. The parents are members of the Lutheran Church. In the fall of 1886 Mr. Williams returned to Scandinavia township, and the following spring, on the advice of his friends, opened a harness shop in Iola, which he has since conducted with excellent success. He first began in a small building on State street, which he rented, his capital at that time comprising only his savings, and his honest, industrious efforts won for him an increasing trade, enabling him to purchase his shop. In 1892, however, he erected a substantial brick building on Main street, adjoining his present room, which later he sold out, and in 1893 built his present commodious brick business house, the largest harness shop in Iola.

Mr. Williams is one of the most prosperous businessmen in Waupaca county, wide-awake and pushing, and is destined to become a wealthy man. His excellent workmanship and honest dealings have brought him a large trade, and he enjoys the respect and confidence of all with whom he has business or social dealings. Besides his shop, he also owns his pleasant home, which has been built since locating in Iola. Mr. Williams is an earnest advocate of the principles of the Republican party, and, while no politician, has served in various official capacities, having been constable and city marshal (one year), and he is at present one of the city councilmen.

His obit in the Stevens Point Journal said the he had been born on the Williams farm “on the Scandinavia road about four miles east of town. He had come to Amherst as a young man as an apprentice to Andrew Moberg in the harness shop. He was a faithful worker for Mr. Moberg three or four years. Later he owned and operated a shop in Iola. In 1896, he was appointed postmaster of Iola, a position he held for over 18 years. On account of poor health, he was forced to resign and the family moved to California. He passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Harry Eichler.

He now owns and operates the old home farm on which he was born, comprising 120 acres of land, the greater part of which is under cultivations and improved in a manner that indicates his practical and progressive spirit, and makes his farm one of the best in the community. He has been called to official honors, having served as a member of the town Board of Supervisors and as a Treasurer of the school district, and in his political views has followed his father’s example by always supporting the Republican Party. According to Jeff: Gertrude Williamsdatter Lykken, 1843-1926, was born at Baggethun. Her husband was Torger Christopherson Lykken, 1833-1918. Gertrude’s parents were William Williamson and Anna Knutson (d. 1880?). Gertrude’s father also went by Vilhelm Vilhelmsen Baggethun. Gertrude came to the U.S. with her mother Anna in 1864. Anna lived with Gertrude and Torger until her death in 1880. The church record of Anna’s death has her last name as Lykken. It looks like William Williamson emigrated on his own to Wisconsin and later married and established a second family.

Her baptismal sponsors were: Ole Tollefsen Ellingbøe, Endre Bergeseiet, Knud Thuneeiet, Sigrid Skjelhaugen, and Ambjør Olsdatter Mÿhre. Ole Tollefsen was the man who stood for the child of unmarried parents.

    • Washington Death Certificate: 84
    • Baptism: 13 Nov 1859, Scandinavia Lutheran Church, Scandinavia Twp, Waupaca County, Wisconsin

    Notes:

It is speculative that the William Williamson of Cowlitz County is the William Williamson who was born to William and Anne in Portage County. The birth dates ascribed to the Cowlitz County William are not consistent with each other and are not all consistent with the June 1859 date.

In the 1880 census, he may or may not be the 21 year-old farm hand William Williamson living on the O. John Johnson farm in Minnehaha County, Dakota Territory.

In the 1900 census, the family lives in Stella, Cowlitz County, Washington. He is 38 years old and was born in Wisconsin in September of 1861. He owned his farm with a mortgage.

In the 1910 census the family is in Portland, Oregon. All the children are at home. The senior William is a farmer.

In the 1920 census the family is in Stella, Washington. William is a farmer. Living with him and Ida is their daughter-in-law, Anna L., 23, their grand-son, Lester, ten months, and Maxina Butler, 5, “niece”, born in Mississippi. A Lester S Williamson married Thelma D Westerdahl in Vancouver, Clark County, Washington, on 13 Dec 1941.

In the 1930 census he is William Williamson, 71, living in Stella Precinct, Cowlitz County, Washington, with his wife, Ida L., 57, and their 40 year-old single son William H. The older William is a farmer, the younger William is a bookkeeper for a logging camp.

In the 1940 census, he is William Williamson (erroneously indexed as Willianson in Ancestry), living with Ida in Cowlitz County in the same house in which they had both lived in 1935. Both had had eighth-grade educations.

An article in the Bellingham Herald, May 1, 1925:

Andrew Lynde Williams Jr., son of the late “Andy” Williams, veteran police chief of Bellingham, and Whatcom County Sheriff, who died at Okanogan recently, was committed to the Northern State hospital at Sedro-Woolley, at conclusion of a sanity hearing in the superior court Thursday afternoon. The younger Williams’ condition, it was said, followed as a result of a series of accidents and severe disappointments. Early this year he went to Alaska to work at one of the fish canneries but was brought back last week when his condition became worse.

Treatment at the Northern State Hospital is expected to result in improvement. As a youth, he is recalled as a star player in the backfield of Whatcom high school’s football team. He foremerly served on the Bellingham police department, in which latter service deafness developed. The young man gained recognition for his services in the aviation at Kelly field during the world war. The story is told that he faked his way into the army air service by reading the physical examiner’s lips, having acquired that ability after becoming partially deaf.

In the 1930 census, he is living with his sister and family in Bellingham. He was a steamship mechanic. That census shows that Andrew was a veteran of the World War.

An obit in the Bellingham Herald, headlined Lynde Williams Dies, in the September 13, 1930 edition:

Lynde (Windy) Williams, son of the late Andy Williams, veteran police officer and one time sheriff and acting chief of police, died after a brief illness today on a ranch in Okanogan county where he had spent the greater part of the last ten years.

Williams was a former member of the local fire and police departments and also served for some time as night merchant patrolman. He also made several trips to Alaska with P.A.F. crews and, since leaving Bellingham, made a few trips as assistant engineer on ocean steamers.

During his high school days at Whatcom, Williams was a football star, playing on the same team with Fred Spenger, Ben Tidball, Tom Gaffney, Starr Sutherland and other well remembered players.

So far as could be learned here, the only close relative surviving is a sister, Mrs. Layman (Esther) Day, who resides on the Okanogan farm. Williams was about 38 years of age.

An article in the September 16, 1930, edition of the Bellingham Herald notes that Lynde Williams was given a military funeral, officiated by the local Albert J. Hamilton post of the American Legion. Williams had been a charter member of the post. During the World War, he was a sergeant first class in the air service.
