Helge Erikson Kasa was one of the contributors to the start-up of St. Olaf College.

He was a veteran of the Civil War, Company D, 10th Regiment, Minnesota Volunteer Infantry.

As Henry, 38, he and his family were living with his parents in Warsaw Twp, Goodhue County, in the 1880 census.

In the 1885 state census, he is in Warsaw Twp. Living on one side is his parents and brother Johannes and family. Living on the other side is his sister Ambjor Ellingboe, widow of Iver.

In the 1895 state census, the family lives next to the Gaasdelens (widow Guri, 58, is the head) in Warsaw Twp. In the census at least, Henry and Ingrid are listed as Erikson although all of their children are Kasas. All of the children, from Berit to Albert except for Iver, are still living with Henry and Ingrid in 1895.

In the 1920 census, Helge and Ingrid still have Berith, Helge, John, Oscar, and Albert at home, all single. In addition, they have three grandchildren living with them: Freddie (#11119), Herman, and Alice. The last two seem to be Erick’s.

He is listed in “The Valdris Book”, a history of the Valdris Samband published in 1920 (available on Google Books) but his entry specifically says he was not a member of the Samband.

He is Henry Erickson on his death certificate, for which the informant was his wife Ida. He died of stomach cancer.

"Ambjør," as her name was written in earlier records, was five years old when her family of eight immigrated to the Spring Prairie community in Columbia County, Wisconsin. In 1861 her family came to Warsaw Township in Goodhue County, where she spent the rest of her life. On May 22, 1864, Ambjor was confirmed with 13 others at Holden Lutheran Church, rural Kenyon. Her parents later joined Vang Lutheran Church in Dennison. After marriage Ambjor and Iver lived in Warsaw Township near the Kasa farm. She became a widow at the age of 32 years, and gave birth to her 5th child eight months after Iver's death. In 1911 Ambjor sold, to her son Erik, 126 acres in sections 20 and 29 of Warsaw Township for $7,000. At the time of the 1930 census, she was living with Erik and his family. Prior to her death, she lived with her daughter Christine in Dennison. Ambjor was the last surviving child of Erika and Berit Nystuen Kasa's seven children. She and Iver had five children.

In the 1900 census, she and her family were living in Warsaw Township, Goodhue County, MN. The family consisted of Ambjor, 50 (Jan 1850), widowed and the mother of 3 children, her son, Erik, 23 (Mar 1877), her son Iver J., 18 (Jan 1882), and her grand-daughter Emeline, 4 (Apr 1896). Both of Emeline’s parents were born in Minnesota. A Helge Kasa and family, perhaps Ambjor’s brother, lived two farms away.

In the 1910 census, she is living with her son Erick and his family. She is shown to have had 5 children, apparently 5 still living.

Her son Iver’s employment registration card at CF&I listed her as Mrs. Emma Elllingboe of Dennison, Minnesota, his nearest blood relative.

“Henry H. Ives was born June 1869 in Goodhue county. He was living in Maynard in 1949 and probably spent most of his adult life there. Henry had a sister, possibly named Ingeborg, who married Carl Anderson. They lived in Maynard also. A niece, Irene Ives, married Arthur H Holien in Renville County on 6 March 1929 and they lived in Granite Falls.”

In the 1900 census, he was single and a farm laborer on the Torger Elton family in Johnson Twp, Polk County, Minnesota.

In the 1910 census, he was still single and living on his farm in Wang Twp, Renville County, Minnesota, with his sister Emma, and a hired man.

In the 1920 census, he was a bachelor farmer in Wang Twp, Renville County. Living with him is his spinster sister Emma and his mother Berit as well as two hired hands, Sever Strand and Gilbert Olson.

Strangely, and quite erroneously, several family trees on Ancestry show him marrying a Rose Shortell in New Jersey!

Funeral services were held Thursday, July 9, at 2 p.m. at the Anderson Funeral Home in Northfield for Erick Kasa, 94, with the Rev. H. S. Bly of Kenyon officiating in the absence of the regular pastor, the Rev. B. J. Blikstad. Those present joined in singing "Nearer My God To Three" and "Beautiful Savior". Pallbearers were Arthur Ellingboe, George Vandenheuvel, Phillip Hauge, Leroy Swarts, Sr., Leonard Simonson and Bennard Ellingboe. Burial was in the Vang Lutheran Church Cemetery at Dennison. Erick Kasa was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Erickson. He was born in the Dennison area on Sept. 26, 1869. Except for farming two years in Litchfield, he spent the rest of his life in the Dennison community. At one time he was engaged in the livery business in Dennison and was employed in the local creamery. He also worked on the Great Western Railroad. He was married in 1908 to Christine Thoreson. She preceded him in death. He was baptized and confirmed in the Vang Lutheran Church. He died at 7:30 a.m. Monday, July 6, at the St. Olaf Rest Home in Northfield where he had lived for several years. He had been in ill health since 1955. Surviving are three sons and one daughter: Fred of Cannon Falls, Herman and Maurice of Dennison and Mrs. Harold (Alice) Amundson of Rochester. There are five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren all surviving. There are four brothers living: John Kasa of Newtown, N. D., Austin Kasa of Northfield, Oscar Kasa of Annandale and Bennie of Dennison. Three sisters Betsey, Bertha and Ingeborg and three brothers: Iver, Helge and Albert preceded him in death. Erick Kasa had been married twice. Both of his former wives are dead, the former Mollie Thoreson and the former Christine Soine.

DENNISON (Special) -- Funeral services were held Friday, March 2, at 2 p.m. for Iver H. Kasa, who passed away at his home just north of Wang's Corner in Warsaw Township on Monday, Feb. 27, at the age of 84 years and three months. The Rev. B. J. Blikstad officiated. Mrs. Blikstad sang a Norwegian son, "Jeg er en Fremmend," accompanied by Mrs. Cyrus Midje, organist; Parnell Morck of Kenyon sang, "Does Jesus Care," also accompanied by Mrs. Midje. Pallbearers were Ludvig Soine, Cyrus Midje, Lewis P. Underdahl, John A. Underdahl, Austin Brekken and John T. Stenhaug. Burial was in the family lot in the Vang Cemetery. Iver H. Kasa, the son of Henry Erickson Kasa and Ingerid Kasa, was born in Warsaw township, November 30, 1871. He was baptized and confirmed in the Vang church by the Rev. C. A. Melby. He was united in marriage November 21 to Randi Holien at Vang church by Rev. Melby. To this union, five children were born. One daughter, Ida, died in infancy. Another daughter, Selma, passed away in 1924. He wife preceded him in death in 1937. He is survived by three sons: Helmer, at home, Melvin, of rural Dennison and Henry of Northfield. There are three grandchildren and six brothers: Erick, of Dennison, Austin of Northfield, Albert of Rosemount, John, of New Town, N. D., Oscar, of St. Cloud, Bennie of rural Dennison, and one sister, Bertha of Northfield. Kasa had farmed all his life in this neighborhood where he was well known.

DENNISON (Special)--Helge H. Kasa, 75, of this place died at his rooming house in Northfield, Tuesday, March 29. He passed away in his sleep and was found in the morning when a friend went to his room to awaken him. Mr. Kasa had suffered from heart trouble for some time but his death came unexpectedly. Funeral services were conducted at Vang church April 1, by Rev. Adolph Egge. Pallbearers were: Herman, Melvin I., Melvin B., Helge, Fred and Austin Jr. They were all Kasas and all were nephews of the deceased. Helge H. Kasa, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Erickson Kasa, was born in Warsaw township on March 27, 1874 and with the exception of a short time spent in North Dakota, had spent his whole life in this community and living on the place of his birth. He was a member of the Vang congregation and never was married. Surviving are two sisters and seven brothers; Mrs. Herman Estergreen of Fargo, N. Dak., Miss Bertha of Minneapolis, Austin of Northfield, Albert of Rosemount, John of Van Hook, N. Dak., Erick, Iver and Ben of Dennison. Mrs. Egge sang "Despair Not O Heart" and "Some Day the Silver Cord Will Break." The latter, a norwegian hymn. Mrs. Cyrus Midje, church organist, played. Interment was at Vang cemetery. Relatives from away who attended the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Harry B. Kasa of Red Wing, John H. Kasa of Van Hook, N. Dak., Miss Bertha Kasa of Minneapolis and Henry Ives of Maynard, MInn.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 21 at the Vang Lutheran Church for Bennie H. Kasa, 83, who passed away Saturday, June 17 at the Northfield City Hospital. The Rev. John E. Fahning officiated. Two vocal selections were rendered by Lois Johnson accompanied by Mrs. Cyrus Midge, the church organist. Serving as pallbearers were: Austin Kasa, Jr., Helge Kasa, Henry Kasa, Herman Kasa, Maurice Kasa and Donald Kasa. Interment was at the Vang Cemetery. He was born to Helge and Ingrid Ives Kasa in Warsaw Township, Goodhue County on June 24, 1883. He was a member of the Vang Lutheran Church and resided in Warsaw Township all his life. He was married to Christine Wangen at Cannon Falls on March 25, 1909. He is survived by his widow, Christine; one son, Harry and one daughter, Berncie (Mrs. Halvor Dalbotten) both of Red Wing. He also leaves five grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren and three brothers, Austin of Northfield, John of Newton, N.D., and Oscar of Annandale, Minn. He was preceded in death by one son, Melvin in 1952, his parents, four brothers, three sisters and one grandson, Harvey Dalbotten.

Austin (1885-1970) was the son of Helge and Ingri (Oldre) Kasa.  He was born and raised in Holden Township, Goodhue County, near the Vang Church.  Ida (1895-1975) was the daughter of Even and Inga (Oldre) Remme.  She and Austin were both baptized and confirmed at Vang Lutheran Church which was near their homes.  Ida went to grade school in the Dennison area, but attended high school in Luverne, MN. While going to high school she lived with her father’s parents.  Austin and Ida were married in 1918.  They lived and farmed in the Northfield-Dennison area.  The last farm they lived on was the Orr farm in Section 15 of Northfield Township.  The Kasa’s main farming enterprise was dairy cattle.  Austin especially liked to work with horses.  He often trained horses for himself and also trained horses for other people in the area.  After retiring in the late 1950s, Austin and Ida moved to Northfield.  Mr. Kasa worked at Carleton College as a custodian for a number of years.  He also liked to get out in the country and do some farm work.  The Kasa children were:  Inez (Mrs. William Munckton) of Northfield; Helge Edin, died shortly after his birth; Helen (Mrs. Helen Radtke) of Northfield; Helge Even of rural Dennison; Gladys (Mrs. Ralph Koester) of rural Northfield; Austin Jr., of Cottage Grove; Avis (Mrs. Curtis Reed) of Maribel, WI; Donald of Northfield, died in 1977; Eugene of rural Northfield; Donna (Mrs. Sewell Mathre) of Northfield; and JoAnne (Mrs. Stanley Kucera, Jr.) of Houston, TX.

He was a Private in the U.S. Army in World War I.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday, July 19, at the Vang Church east of Dennison for Erick Svien who passed away at the Mineral Springs Sanatorium, July 15, at the age of 78 years. The Reverend Adolph Egge officiated. Pallbearers were: Clarence, John and Bernard Svien, Iver and Erick Ellingboe and Melvin Kasa. Mrs. Adolph Egge sang two songs at the service. Interment was at the Vang cemetery. Erick Svien was born in Warsaw township on Nov. 20, 1869. He was the son of the late John and Betsy Svien, pioneer residents of the community. On December 15, 1921, he was united in marriage to Lavina Johnson, also of this neighborhood. To them were born four children: John of Farmington, Mrs. Ed Kimbrel (Beatrice) of St. Paul, Vernon of St. Peter and Edward of Cannon Falls. He is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Anna Tasa and three grandchildren. Mr. Svien spent his whole life in this community and leaves a large number of friends.

In the 1910 census, Thrond, 37, and his wife Ambjor, 39, and family are living in Dennison Village, Goodhue County, MN. This is Thrond’s 2nd marriage, her first. The two have been married 9 years and she has borne 4 children, all still living. The children living with Thrond and Ambjor are Amanda, 13, Ivar, 7, Marie, 5, Arthur, 3, and Helen, 1 and 7/12.

In a 1914 land ownership map of Warsaw Twp, Goodhue County, “T. I. Ellingboe” owned 80 acres in Section 19. The parcel was the east half of the northeast quarter-section and was just north of the village of Dennison. His neighbors to the north and west were Prestegaards.

He registered for the draft on September 12, 1918, in Red Wing as Thrond Ellingboe of Dennison. He was born on January 2, 1873. He is a self-employed farmer in Dennison. His nearest relative is Mrs. Thrond Ellingboe of Dennison. He is described as of medium height and build with blue eyes and light brown hair.

In the 1920 census he is a farmer living in Dennison, Goodhue County.

He is listed in “The Valdris Book”, a history of the Valdris Samband published in 1920 (available on Google Books), as “Thrond I Ellingboe Dennison Minn.” His entry shows that he was a member of the Samband between 1904 and 1906.

In the 1930 census, he is Thrond Elingboe, a farmer in Dennison. Living with him are his wife Emma and their children Iver and Arthur.

His will is listed in the Goodhue County Will Records, Volume 089 1945-1952, for the will year 1946.

He was first buried at Vang Cemetery on 20 Oct 1945. Later, he was moved to Oaklawn where he and Ambjor share a gravestone.

Living on the farm next door is a 14 year old servant girl name Gurianna Ellingbo. The handwriting is poor: that servant girl may be Amanda Ellingboe.

In the 1930 census, Erick (now spelled correctly) and his family were still living in Warsaw Township. The family consisted of Erick, 52, his wife Bertha J., 46, his mother Ambjor, 79, daughter Amanda B., 23, son Iver, 21, son Edward, 19, and son Erick J., 16. There is no entry in the column for how long Erick and Bertha had been married. Bertha J. is probably the same person as Johanna Ellingboe. Erick Jr.’s mother’s maiden name is shown, in his death certificate, as Svien.

Next door to Erick lived Ole Egland, wife Martha, and son Arthur A. who, apparently, later married Erick’s daughter Amanda.

In the 1909 Pueblo city directory, he is Ivar Ellingboe, an employee of the Steel Works. He resides at 2132 E Routt Avenue.

In the 1910 census, he lived at 1307 Cypress Street in Pueblo, Colorado, where he works at a steel mill. His wife is Nellie. They have been married for four years and it is the first marriage for each. Nellie has had one child, no longer living. Included in the household is Oscar Lee, 50, born in Iowa, “cousin” and a 31 year-old male, name illegible, roomer.

In the 1915 Pueblo city directory, his wife is Mary and he is a steel worker. They live at 1307 Cypress.

The 1916 directory includes a Theresa Ellingboe, clerk, also living at 1307 Cypress. She is a step-daughter of Iver’s, the daughter of Mary with John Grome.

Iver registered for the draft on September 12, 1918, in Pueblo County. Because the name of his employer (Colorado Fuel & Iron Co.) was stamped on the card, the company probably arranged the registration for its employees. At that time Iver and his wife Mary were living at 1027 Pine in Pueblo. He was described as tall and of slender build with brown eyes and light hair. He had lost the end of his right index finger after the second joint.

In the 1920 census, he is still working for the steel mill in Pueblo.

In the 1930 census, he is still working for the steel mill in Pueblo as a melter foreman.

In the 1931 Pueblo city directory, he is a melter for CF&I. He resides St. Charles Mesa.

In the 1940 census, he and Mary L live in Pueblo. He is a melter in a steel mill. He had been educated through the fourth grade, his wife through the fifth grade. Also part of their household was Rose Ann Southers, age 13, niece, and Peggy Ellingboe, age 7, daughter. Peggy and Rose Ann had also lived with Ivar and Mary at this house in 1935. Peggy and Rose Ann were born in Utah. The next census entry after Ivar was for his son Robert and Robert’s wife Ann E and son Robert Jr. Rose was the daughter of Van and Josephine Southers. The family was recorded in the 1930 census in Utah. Van Southers was born in Georgia and may have been a brother of Mary L. No Ellingboes were ever born in Utah so we don’t know who Peggy is. She could not have been the natural daughter of Mary L.

The 1945 Pueblo city directory shows Iver as a melter for CF&I.

His employment record at CF&I shows he worked for that company continuously between about 1902 to at least May of 1945. Along the way he lost one of his index fingers. The company employment card listed him as 5 ft 10.5 inches tall, 160.5 lbs., dark grey eyes and light brown hair.

Funeral services were held at the Vang Lutheran Church at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 22, 1967 for Gilma E. Underdahl, with the Rev. John E. Fahning officiating. A hymn was sung by the congregation, and Mrs. James Johnson sang two vocal selections. Mrs. Cyrus Midge presided at the organ. Six grandsons: Paul Wardell, James Johnson, Gary Wardell, Thomas Johnson, John Rodde and Alfred Brandvold, Jr., served as pallbearers. Interment took place in the Vang Cemetery. Gilma E. Underdahl passed away Wednesday morning, Oct. 18, at the Kenyon Sunset Home at the age of 71 years. The daughter of Johannes and Marit Lein Kasa, she was born May 21, 1896, in Warsaw township, Goodhue County. She was baptized June 28, 1896, in Vang Lutheran Church and confirmed on November 20, 1910, by the late Rev. A. Hauge. June 9, 1915, she was united in marriage to John A. Underdahl. They have seven children, two sons: Peter of Kenyon and Leroy of Dennison; five daughters: Clarabelle (Mrs. Alfred Brandvold), Marian (Mrs. Albion Rodde) both of Kenyon, Agnes (Mrs Arlie Johnson), Joyce (Mrs Truman Skaro) both of Dennison and Gladys (Mrs. Roland Wardell) of Minneapolis. She is survived by her seven children, twenty-five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Betsy Dalbotten of Kenyon. She was preceded in death by her husband, John, Her parents, one sister and two brothers, one of whom died in infancy.

DENNISON--(Special)--Funeral services were held at the Vang Lutheran church, Saturday, May 3 at 2 p.m. for Joseph Kasa, 52-year-old resident of the High Prairie area. The Rev. Adolph Egge of Northfield officiated. Interment as at the Vang cemetery. Pallbearers were Theodore Frettem, Cyrus Midje, Helmer Kasa, Selmer Gilge, Ludvig and Thomas Soine. Joseph Kasa, the son of John E. and Marit Kasa, was born December 14, 1899 in Warsaw township. He was never married. Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. John A. Underdahl of the Wangs community and Mrs. Betsy Dalbotten of Kenyon. One sister, Mrs. Sever (Anna) Simonson died several years ago. One brother died in infancy. Mr. Kasa engaged in farming and also operated a truck hauling milk from the farms to the Northfield Milk Products company at Northfield. On Thursday morning while he was discussing plans for building a new garage with two carpenters, Ole Midness and Oscar Kappedahl of Cannon Falls, he was stricken with a heart attack and died a few minutes later.

Funeral services for Henry I. Kasa, 71, of 306 E. Woodley St., Northfield, were held on Oct. 30 at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Northfield with the Rev. Robert Hanson and the Rev. R. C. Reinholtzenn officiating. Interment took place in the Vang Cemetery. Pallbearers were Alvin Kvittem, Kermit Swenson, Orlando Broin, John Kvittem and Garvin Broin; all of Kenyon and Carl Christopherson of Northfield. Mrs. Roy Matheson, organist, accompanied soloist, the Rev. Robert Hansen. Henry I. Kasa was born on March 20, 1900, to Iver and Randi Holien Kasa in Warsaw Township. He attended rural schools in Warsaw Township, moved to Northfield as a young man and had resided there since. He was united in marriage to Helen Haugen on Dec. 8, 1927, at Faribault. He was employed as a custodian at Carleton College for 18 years after which he worked as a custodian at Washington School for 29 years, retiring in 1969; however working part time at the Grand Theater. He was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church. Mr. Kasa, who passed away at the Northfield City Hospital on Oct. 27, is survived by his widow, Helen; two sons, Roger Kasa of Huron, S.D., and Jerry Kasa of Northfield; seven grandchildren; one brother, Melvin Kasa of Dennison and by other relatives d friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Helmer; and one sister, Selma.

John Burnett Kasa “Junior” was born March 23, 1932 to John H. and Bertha (Ellingboe) Kasa on the family farm near Van Hook.  He was raised and educated at Van Hook graduating from Van Hook High School.  John enlisted in the United States Navy and proudly served aboard the USS Tarawa CV-40 from 1951-55.  After his honorable discharge from the Navy, he began work at the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston where he burned “worn out” money at night, and attended college by day. John was Chief Engineer at Beacon Management Co. for over 40 years.  He was very dedicated to his career and retired with many honors and memories in the Boston Area.  John was a huge New England Patriots fan, it was a top priority to watch every game. Inez Irene Munckton was born October 2, 1918 in Northfield, MN, daughter of Austin and Ida (Remme) Kasa, the oldest of 10 children. She was raised on a dairy farm in rural Northfield. She transitioned to the west coast by the start of WWII to find work and it was there that she met William Munckton. They were married on August 14, 1943 in Glendale, CA.

In 1944 they moved to Northfield where Bill was a carpenter. Inez worked many jobs and was well known throughout the community for her strong work ethic. Some of those jobs were Bierman’s Home Furnishings, Northfield Lines, Northfield Taxi, Laura’s Café, 3M, Swenson’s Jewelry, Edelbrock’s Hatchery, and The Cage at St. Olaf College.

She was in the Bluebird Neighborhood of the Northfield retirement Center since February, 2013 and enjoyed concerts, bingo, lots of friends and the caring staff.

Helge Kasa, 86, rural Dennison, died Wednesday, April 8, 2009 at the Sunset Nursing Home in Kenyon.

  Helge Even Kasa was born December 26, 1922 in rural Goodhue County, son of Austin and Ida (Remme) Kasa. He was raised with his family on various farms in the Dennison area and attended country school. On June 27, 1941 he was united in marriage to Catherine Marjorie Bradford and they made their home in Northfield with Helge working for the Northfield Condensory.

  Helge and Catherine began dairy farming in 1945, first in the Dennison area, then on a farm in the Stanton, returned back to the Dennison area before purchasing their farm east of Dennison in 1959. He began working for Armour and Company in South St Paul. He retired from Armour in 1978 and continued working around the farm as long as he was able.

  Helge had a lifelong love of horses. He, his children, and grandchildren also had riding horses and enjoyed going to many horse shows where they all competed. Helge continued throughout his life buying, selling and trading horses and making many new friends along the way. He enjoyed his time on the farm especially when family and friends came to visit. He was a life long member of Vang Lutheran Church and served on the Cemetery Board.

An article in the Minneapolis Tribune in June of 1948 talked about her work as a music teacher and included a photo of her and her daughters at the piano. The article said that Mrs. Stepperud had 70-100 pupils and four pianos: one on the porch, two in the dining room, and one upstairs.

Alma Stepperud, 94, of Kenyon, died Sunday, Jan. 30, 2000, at the Milaca Elim Home. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at First Evangelical Church, Kenyon, with the Rev. Guy Redfield officiating. Visitation is scheduled for one hour prior to the service at the church. Alma Thoreson, the daughter of Ole and Christine Thoreson, grew up in Dennison and graduated from Kenyon High School and MacPhail College of Music. She taught hundreds of piano, voice and organ students during her career that spanned more than 50 years. She was a member of the National Guild of Piano Teachers, Minnesota Teacher State and National Association, and the Keyboard Club of Rochester. She was an active judge and member of the Minnesota Music Teachers Association since 1933 and had hundreds of winners in the Minnesota State Piano Contest. She was honored as Kenyons Citizen of the Year in 1978. Memorials should be directed to First Evangelical Church, 309 Forest St., Kenyon, 55946.

According to the 1930 census, Robert was an adopted son. His father had been born in Georgia and his mother in the U.S. That suggests that he may be a Southers too, perhaps a son of one of Mary Lee’s brothers.

In the 1940 census, he and Ann E and Robert Jr. live next to or with his father and mother. He was a metal pourer at a steel mill. He had two years of high school.

In the 1943 Pueblo, Colorado, city directory, Robt I “Ellingbol” and his wife, Anna E, lived at 2005 West Arroyo Ave. He was a steelworker.

His employment record with CF&I shows that he served in the U.S. Marines from 15 Jul 1943 to 8 Nov 1945. He had only three years of high school.

The 1945 Pueblo, Colorado, city directory shows Robert and Anna living at 2614 E Routt Avenue. Robert is in the USA (probably U.S. Army). Anna is an operator at MSH&TCo.

He is not in the 1948 Pueblo directory.

Robert Iver Ellingboe, 63, Keno, died in the Klamath County Nursing Home on Wednesday.

Mr. Ellingboe was born on Feb. 8, 1918, in Mesa, Ariz. He served in the Marine Corps from 1943 until 1945 and was in the Air Force from 1947 until 1965. He retired as a TSGT, working an additional 11 years in the civil service. He moved to Keno with his wife, Delva, several years ago.

Survivors include the widow, Delva of Keno; sons, Robert Jr., of Albuquerque, N.M., and John of Land O Lakes, Fla.; step-son Carl Grabel of Bedford, Tex.; step-daughter, Cheryl Kruckeberg of Cedar Ridge, Colo., brother, John Southers of Reno, Nev.; sister, Barbara Hibdon of Amarillo, Texas.

Graveside services with military honors will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Keno Cemetery, the Rev. John Johnson of the Keno Christian Church officiating.

That Barbara Hibdon, “sister”, mentioned in Robert Iver’s obit, may be the Theresa, the 11 month-old daughter of Mary Southers Grome, in the 1900 census. It’s also possible that Barbara Hibdon was a child of Robert Iver’s biological parents, whoever they were.

A Barbara Hibdon, b. 7 Jun 1899, died in Amarillo on 12 Jan 1986, the widow of James Ambrose Hibdon (1896-1984). According to the 1940 census, she was born in Colorado.

Ellingboe Myron A. Faribault Daily News 17/Sep/1979 Myron A. Ellingboe, 63, of Inver Grove Heights, formerly of rural Dennison, died Friday, Sept.14, at Miller Hospital, St. Paul. The funeral service was held Sunday afternoon at Vang Lutheran Church in rural Dennison, with the Rev. Richard Mork and the Rev. Orville Wold officiating. Internment was in the church cemetery with military rites provided by the Northfield veterans organization. The deceased was a past commander of Eugene H. Truax Post No. 4393, VFW. Pallbearers were Thomas Barrett, Paul Ellingboe, Robert Falvin, William Miller, Michael Morton and Robert Zeik. Arrangements were made by the Boldt Funeral Home of Faribault. Myron Alvin Ellingboe, son of Anna (Svien) Ellingboe, was born on May 15, 1916 in rural Rice county. He married Adah Jenner on January 10, 1948, at Olivia. She preceded him in death this past May 17. Ellingboe was employed by Sears Allstate Insurance Co. He is survived by his son, William, of Fountain Valley, Calif.; two grandsons; two brothers, Arnold and Bennard Ellingboe of Dennison.

Bennard Ellingboe

NORTHFIELD -- Bennard Ellingboe, age 84 of Cannon Falls and formerly of Dennison, died Monday, Feb. 23, 2004, at the Emergency Room of the Cannon Falls Hospital. He died while attending a friend’s funeral at the Wangen Prairie church.

Funeral Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday at the Dennison Lutheran Church in Dennison. Burial at the Wangen Prairie Cemetery with full military honors. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Bierman Funeral Home in Northfield.

Bennard I. Ellingboe was born on Aug. 14, 1919, in the quaint rural town of Dennison located in Rice County. His parents were Anna Svien Ellingboe and John Ellingboe. He died while attending a friends funeral at Wangen Prairie Church, on Feb. 23, 2004. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. today at Dennison Lutheran Church, and the burial will follow at Wangen Prairie cemetery. Visitation was from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Bennards favorite funeral home, Bierman Funeral Home.

Bennard grew up on the Ellingboe family farm in Dennison. He attended school in the area. He worked on his parents farm until the age 22, when he was drafted into the Army and served in World War II. He served in the 45th Thunderbird Division, infantry, and bravely fought in three major battles -- Sicily, Anzio Beachhead and the march through Italy to capture Rome. By the end of the capture of Rome, Bennard was one of a few in his battalion of soldiers to survive. The Battalion was disbanded. He then transferred to France, where he worked in the 1203 Engineers fire department. He finally returned home to the Dennison area in September 1945.

During his tour in Europe, Bennard wrote letters to his girlfriend, Evelyn Frettem, back home. Bennard and Evelyn married on July 28, 1946, at Wangen Prairie Church. Bennard and Evelyn bought a former church parsonage in Dennison and raised their four children -- John, Paul, Helen and James. Bennard and Evelyn spent 50-plus years in Dennison until moving to Cannon Falls in 2001. Bennard took advantage of the GI bill after returning from the Army and became an apprentice painter. He worked with Paul Kinsella, a local Northfield paint contractor. He was also self-employed for a time. He later went to work as a painter for Carleton College and for Sheldahl. However, he spent most of his painting career painting the dorms, homes and buildings owned by St. Olaf College. Bennard admirably chose to work for St. Olaf in 1961, so that his children would receive free college tuition at a Lutheran College.

Bennard was a member of the Vang Lutheran Church in Dennison before his marriage. He was a member of Dennison Lutheran Church since 1946. He served on the Church Council for many years. Bennard and Evelyn fondly attended and ate at all of the lutefisk suppers in Goodhue and Rice county churches. Bennard also served on the Dennison City Council. He was a member of the Sons of Norway, the VFW, and, of course, an active member in the Dennison Birthday Club. Bennard will be remembered for helping neighbors with getting their mail and helping them out whenever they needed it. He also helped Evelyn care for his mother-in-law for several years. Bennard had a great sense of humor! He loved to tell stories, often more than once. He and Evelyn attended practically every funeral of every friend and every relative since they were married. They had great conversations at every social event. Bennard and Evelyn truly appreciated the friendship of so many in the area, but especially the close friendship of Gene and Joyce Schrader and Dale Lilleskov. Bennards good pal, Orie Ims, provided hours and hours of political conversations.

Bennard was an excellent gardener. He enjoyed planting flowers on all the graves of family members each spring with Evelyn. They would take water in plastic containers and make sure each plant on the graves was watered when it had not rained. Bennard could make a seemingly dead plant spring back to life and bloom. This was analogous of Bennards ability to survive lifes obstacles thrown his way. Bennard was a real survivor: World War II, lutefisk and meatball suppers, fumes of latex, oil-based, and epoxy paint, diabetes and all those close calls with death from 1991 to Christmas 2003. On Thanksgiving Day, 2003, Bennard had a heart attack while still managing to accompany his grandchildren to "A Cat in the Hat," movie before agreeing to go United Hospital. Bennard survived several heart attacks, a stroke, bypass grafts, stents and finally a pacemaker. He took so many medications at the end that he had developed a close personal relationship with the pharmacist at Medicap in Northfield. Bennard is survived by his children: John (Linda), of Seattle, Wash.; Paul (Bonnie), of Plymouth; Helen Jones, of Sioux Falls, S.D. and James, of Cannon Falls; grandchildren: Cindy (husband Steve) and Kristin, of Seattle, Wash.; Meggan and Mason, of Plymouth; Jacob, Julia, and Jessica, of Grand Forks, N.D.; niece Elsa Frettem, of St. Paul and her friend Bernard Gonzales, and nephew, Peter Frettem, of Cannon Falls. Bennard was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Ellingboe, August 10, 2003; father and mother, John and Anna Ellingboe; brother and sister-in-law, Myron and Ada Ellingboe; and brother Arnold Ellingboe. Contributions in Bennards memory would be appreciated to Dennison Lutheran Church, the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society, or the Minnesota DFL Party.

From a letter to the editor of the Cannon Falls Beacon, dated July 13, 2004:

As the Fourth of July weekend approaches, I can’t help think about my recently deceased grandpa, Ben Ellingboe, who lived in Cannon Falls, and his love for politics. The many parades this weekend will undoubtedly bring politicians and their staff to towns all over Minnesota. As a Bronze Star veteran from World War II, Ben would have wanted everyone to thank the veterans who make peace possible and vote for those politicians who won’t cut funding from veteran’s health care programs.

Survivors include two daughters, Muriel (Mrs. Boyd) Langseth of Sandstone, Minn., and Diane (Mrs. Robert) Bemel of Anoka, Minn.; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Joyce (Mrs. Harlan) Rosvold of Cumberland, Wis. Two brothers preceded her in death.

Peter John Underdahl, 87, of Kenyon, died Tuesday, April 16, 2013 at the Reflections Home in Northfield, Minnesota.

He was born May 9, 1925 in Warsaw Township, North of Kenyon, the son of John and Gilma (Kasa) Underdahl. One of seven children, Peter attended school through the 8th grade at District 128, Warsaw Township. He graduated from Kenyon High School in 1943 and spent some time on the home farm until he joined the Navy in February, 1945. Peter achieved the rank of Pharmacist Mate 3rd Class and spent time at the Corona Naval Hospital in San Diego, California. As he was preparing to go in to the Fleet Marines, the Atomic Bomb was dropped and World War II ended. He then boarded the heavy cruise USS FALL RIVER in Pearl Harbor and was one of hundred of ships present to participate in testing the A-Bomb at Bikini Atoll. Peter spent 23 months in the military and returned to Kenyon in November, 1946. After an honorable discharge from the Navy, Peter worked several different jobs in Dennison, Northfield and Iowa until he married LaVon Amundson in Kenyon on July 11, 1948, and began working at the Kenyon Co-Op Oil – formerly known at Tydol Veedol gas station. During Peter''s 20 years there, the company grew and expanded. In 1967 the Underdahls left Kenyon and Peter started his career with Lester Farm Buildings in Southwestern Minnesota. Peter was recognized several years as Salesman of the Year with Lester’s and also recognized nationally by the Rural Builders Association. He retired from Lester’s in 1988. After his retirement he drove school bus in St. James and Kenyon.

Peter was active in local affairs including: President of First Lutheran Church in St. James, Minnesota for three years, Transportation of Veterans from Watonwan County to the V.A. Hospital once a week or as needed, and delivery of Meals on Wheels for the elderly and Shut-Ins in St. James.

In 1997, Peter and LaVon moved back to Kenyon and enjoyed time for golf, travel and visits with their three children, four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Peter was a devoted husband, loving father, and a great bear hugger to his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, LaVon Underdahl of Kenyon; children, Pamela (and Leonard) Boyle of San Luis Obispo, CA, Lynn (and Brad) Sturm of LaCrescent, MN, and Jerald Underdahl (and Steve Brandwein) of Phoenix, AZ; four grandchildren, Serena (and Scott) Von Ruden of Seattle, WA, Emily Sturm (and Bonnie Lohman) of Minneapolis, MN, Colin Boyle of San Luis Obispo, CA, and Kyra Siegfriedt of San Luis Obispo, CA; two great grandchildren, Odessa and Leo Von Ruden; sister, Marian Rodde of Kenyon; brother, Leroy (and Shirley) Underdahl of Dennison; many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, four sisters, Clarabelle Brandvold, Agnes Johnson, Gladys Wardell, and Joyce Skaro, and brother-in-law, Albion Rodde.
