In his draft registration, he claimed no middle name. At that time (October 16, 1940), he lived in Chicago and worked for Garden City Towel Supply Co.

He was a machinists mate in the U.S. Navy in World War II. An article in the 15 Feb 1943 edition of the Mattoon, Illinois, Journal Gazette, says he was a radio technician second class petty officer and was serving as a mathematics instructor for the Navy in Chicago.

Robert married Iona Harriette FARR on 10 Jan 1936 in Cook County, Illinois, and was divorced. Iona was born on 14 Apr 1916 in Clinton, Clinton County, Iowa; died on 29 Jul 1998 in Glendale, Arizona. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

In the 1940 census, he and Marie, with Nancy and Roy, lived in a rented apartment in Chicago. He was a bricklayer. Five years earlier, he had lived in the “same place” and Marie had lived in Michigan City, Indiana.

At the time of his draft registration (16 Oct 1940), he was employed by American Maize Products Co. He and Marie (or, at least, Marie) lived at 11322 Avenue L in Chicago.

He may be the Roy Waddell, age 41, who, in December of 1954, with his then-wife, Theresa, age 31, attempted to steal a small quantity of merchandise from a Kroger food store. Roy and Theresa were described as a Crete couple.

His obit mentions that he died at St. James Hospital in Chicago Heights. He had been born in South Chicago and had lived in the south suburbs for 30 years. He was a bricklayer and a 50-year member of the Bricklayers Union, Local 6, or Merrillville, Indiana. Survivors were his wife, Theresa C., three sisters, Margaret Schaal of Los Angeles, Edith Quinlivin of Orland Park, and Mary Lienweber of Glen Ellyn; two brothers, Archie of Hammond, Indiana, and Donald of Glen Ellyn; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. No children were mentioned.

Clara (daughter of John William CUMMINGS and Matilda Mary HORNUNG) was born on 8 Aug 1915 in La Porte County, Indiana; died on 23 May 1943 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois; was buried on 26 May 1943 in Oak Hill Cemetery, Hammond, Lake County, Indiana. Notes:

He died as the result of an auto accident, a collision of a car and semi, at the intersection of Chicago and Cline Avenues in East Chicago, Indiana. He died at St. Catherine’s Hospital in East Chicago, a day or two after the accident. His father was the informant for his death certificate. He was married at the time of his death.

He was a member of the Brick Layers Union, Local 6, of East Chicago.
