She was the 25 year-old Miss Julia Thompson of Thompson, North Dakota, when she married Knute J Holien.

Her divorce from Knut was a big deal in Grand Forks when the trial began in February of 1913. She claimed that Knut had beaten her, called her vile names, drenched her with milk, and threw a pitchfork at her. In the divorce, she was granted custody of two of her three children. In October of 1913, she asked for custody of that other child, John, then 6 years old.

The custody battle may not have succeeded. In the 1920 census, only her daughters were living with her.

In the 1940 census, she was Julia Anderson.

Julia married Knute Johannesson HOLIEN on 3 Feb 1905 in North Dakota, and was divorced about 1913. Knute (son of Johannes Knudsen HOLIEN and Anne Olsdatter DY FRAMSTAD) was born on 2 Dec 1873 in Vang i Valdres, Oppland, Norway. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

In the 1920 census, she is the 10 year-old Olene Holien, living in Grand Forks with her sister Alma, 12, her mother Julia Holien, 39, a widow, an aunt Olena Thompson, age 16, and her mother’s mother, Tilda Thompson, 63, a widow. No one in the household is employed. The father of the two youngest girls was born in North Dakota.

In the 1930 census, she is the 18 year-old stepdaughter of Oscar Anderson, age 44, born in North Dakota to parents born in Norway. Her mother is now Julia Anderson, age 48. The couple has been married for 8 years. Also in the household is Julia’s other daughter, Alma, 22. Oscar is a plasterer’s helper, Alma is a bookkeeper for a life insurance company, Oline is a stenographer for a retail hardware business. The family lives in a house they own, worth $4000, at 1111 Lanark Avenue South in the city of Grand Forks.
