She is Marit Gunnarsdatter Kvien, I21942, in Jim’s VS. No spouse or children shown. She was born on Arnehaugen 96/10 under Kvien. Her parents were not married at the time she was born.

Called Marit G Gjevre in the History of Renville County. That history says that Marit was a cousin of A T Ellingboe’s first wife, Berit Lien. (Apparently Marit’s father was a brother of Berit’s mother.)

Although she is listed with her parents and siblings in Renville County in the 1880 census, a note says that she was “at Minneapolis.”

In the 1910 census, she is shown as having borne 3 children, all 3 still living. She is shown to have been married to Andrew T. for 13 years.

In the 1930 census, Marit, 69, was living with, and listed as a servant (“maid”) for, Sever Weflen, a 56 year old single farmer in Renville County. The Sever Weflen farm was located next to the residence of Iver A. Ellingboe. She is shown to have emigrated in 1866.

In the 1936 Minneapolis city directory, she lives with George and Agnes at 409 E 18th.

In the 1938 Minneapolis city directory, she lives at 1711 Portland Avenue S, apartment 23.

In the 1940 census, she lived at 1711 Portland in Minneapolis with her son George and daughter Agnes. Marit had had zero years of schooling.

She died at home in Renville of senility which she had had for 5 years. She had lived in Renville for 5 years and 11 months. Her death certificate lists her father’s name as Gunner Gjerre and her mother as Gro Weflen.

She is the Marith Gundersdatter of one of the Qvien farms in Vang in the 1865 census. That Marith was 6 years old and her father was Gunder Gundersson, age 28, and her mother was Gro Helgesdatter, age 31.

In the 1900 census, he and Emma live in Maynard where he is a merchant. Living with the newly-married couple are Ole’s sister Anne and his brother Olaus.

In the 1920 census, he was a mailman living with his family in the village of Maynard.

They have been married for 5 years. For some reason, George and Agnes’s parents were reported, erroneously, as having been born in “United States” and “Minnesota.” None of the three are shown as having any occupation.

In the 1936 Minneapolis city directory, he lives with his mother and sister Agnes at 409 E 18th.

In the 1940 census, he was a 40 year-old divorced man living with his mother and sister in Minneapolis. He had an eighth-grade education and was employed as a truck driver, currently working 6 hours per week.

He registered for the draft in Minneapolis at the Municipal Auditorium on 14 Feb 1942. At that time he was not employed and lived with his sister Agnes at 1711 Portland Avenue in Minneapolis.

George was shown as “single” in his death certificate. He was a veteran of World War II. He died from severe burns received in an accidental home fire. An article in the December 4, 1954, edition of the Star said that George died in a fire that destroyed his home and severly injured the man that lived with him, Svere Ulvik, age 70. (Ulvik survived and died in 1973.)

According to the Minnesota Veterans Graves Registration Index, George was a veteran of World War II. Find A Grave shows his gravestone which says S1 USNR.

She attended school in the Maynard area. She completed normal training in Madison and taught rural school near Maynard. She lived in Minneapolis several years and then moved to Renville where she cared for her mother. She moved to Montevideo in the early 1980s and lived at the Clara City nursing home for a couple of years before her death. She was survived by nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers and four sisters.

Entered twice in the 1930 census as living with her sister Esther Eide as well as her brother George. In the latter, she is not shown as having any occupation.

In the 1935 Minneapolis city directory, she is a teacher living at 409 E 18th.

In the 1936 Minneapolis city directory, she is a clerk and lives at 409 E 18th.

In the 1940 census, she is Agnes Hillman, married but no husband listed, high school graduate, living in Minneapolis at 1711 Portland in a rented apartment with her mother and her brother George. She works 32 hours per week as a helper in a bakery. She made $650 in 1939 and is the household’s principal earner.

Paul Eide Sr. passed away at 92 on July 24, 2014.

He was born November 26, 1921 on a farm in Maynard, MN. He attended a country school through 8th grade, then went to high school in Granite Falls, and then on to the University of Minnesota for one year. He quit college to work for an airplane factory in San Diego, CA.

In 1942 he enlisted in the Navy and served for four years during World War II, including invasions of Guam, the Philippines, and Okinawa. When the war was over, he went back to Minnesota and married the love of his life, Lorraine Pederson, on February 3, 1946.

The couple lived in MN for a few years and Paul Jr. was born there in 1949. In 1951 the family moved to Fairbanks, Alaska, where Paul Sr. worked as a civilian at Eielson Air force Base. In 1955 they left Alaska and moved to Brookings where a good friend of theirs from Minnesota was living at the time. Daughter, Patricia, was born in Crescent City, CA in 1958.

The first years in Brookings Paul worked for Brookings Plywood, sold cars for 10 years, then worked for many years at Hanscam’s Hardware Store, and finally he worked for Square Deal Lumber until his retirement in 1983.

Paul has loved his life in Brookings where they have lived for almost 60 years. He was a charter member of Trinity Lutheran Church and also a long time member of the Brookings Elks Club. Paul loved to take visiting family and friends for long tours of the beautiful Brookings and surrounding areas, being gone for hours at a time.

Paul is survived by his wife, Lorraine; two children, Paul Jr. (Barbara) of Brookings; Pat Arts (Dave) of Springfield, OR; three grandchildren, Eric Eide of Springfield, OR, Andrea (Eide) Trinh (John) of Phoenix, AZ; Ashley Arts of Eugene, OR; and one great-grandson, Caleb Trinh of Phoenix, AZ. A service will be held on Saturday, August 2, at 2:00 pm at Trinity Lutheran Church in Brookings.
