    Funeral services for Andrew K. Svien, were held at the Parker Funeral Home on Friday, Jan. 8, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. G. H. Huggenvik, pastor of the First English Lutheran Church officiating. Mrs. John Parker sang "Behold A Host, Arrayed In White" and "In The Garden" accompanied by Mrs. Flora Parker. Pallbearers were nephews of Mr. Svien, and included Lyle Brekken, Iver Halvorson, Arnold Jacobson, Burnett Jacobson, Norville Jacobson, and Julius Jacobson, all of Dennison. Interment was made in the family lot in the Vang's Lutheran church Cemetery near Dennison. Relatives and friends attending the services from away were from: Tucson, Ariz., Dennison, Northfield, Minneapolis, St. Paul, Cannon Falls, Red Wing, Kenyon, and Kasson. Andrew K. Svien, the son of Knute and Sisal Svien, was born at his parents farm home in Renville County, Minn., on August 27, 1878. When he was a young boy, he moved with the family to a farm in the Sogn community in Goodhue County, and there he attended the rural public schools and was also confirmed, at the Vang's Lutheran Church, located there. On Dec. 9, 1909 he was united in marriage to Miss Martha Jellum, at Harvey, N.D. They made their home there for several years, during which time, Mr. Svien was employed with the railroad. Following that, they homesteaded land at Parshall, N.D. They then moved to Dennison, where they resided for several years, following which, they moved to Kenyon. In 1942, they moved to Faribault, where Mr. Svien was employed at the Wilson Packing Company until his retirement in 1953. Since then, they have made their home at 216 4th St. N.W. Mr. Svien passed away at the St. Lucas Hospital on Tuesday evening Jan. 5, following a lingering illness. He is survived by his widow, Martha; by two sons, Merle of Faribault and Arlon of Tucson, Arizona; by a daughter, Mrs. Arthur Naseth (Inez) of Faribault; by four grandchildren; by two brothers, Knute Svien of Dennison and Austin Brekken of Northfield; by two sisters, Mrs. Anna Halvorson of Dennison and Mrs. Ingebord Jacobson of Dennison; and by a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives. He was preceded in death by three sons, Siegfried, Howard, and Myron; and by four brothers, Helge, Iver, Henry and John.

    Funeral services were held for Austin B. Brekken Sr., at 2 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 9, at the Vang Lutheran Church with Rev. Terrence Fretheim officiating. At the church service Mrs. Fretheim sang "The Lord Is My Sheperd". Mrs. Cyrus Midge presided at the organ. Honorary pallbearers were LeRoy Brekken, David Lenway, and Mark Lenway. Dennis Brekken, Robert Reko, Richard Lenway, Burnett Jacobson, Merle Svien and Iver Halvorson served as pallbearers. Interment took place a the Vang Cemetery. Austin was born Dec. 7, 1888 to parents Knut and Sissel Ives Svien. After baptism on Jan. 6, 1889 he was taken to live with foster parents, Mr. and Mrs. Even S. Brekken of Dennison. Mrs. Brekken was his aunt. He grew to manhood on their family farm, later moving to Northfield where he attended High School and Saint Olaf college. He also attended college at Saint Ansgar, Iowa. Dec. 14, 1910, at the Methodist Church at Monticello, he was united in marriage to Tulie Read. They established their home on the Brekken farm for 46 years, then retired to Northfield where they resided until May of 1968 when due to ill health they became residents of the Kenyon Sunset Home. Mr. Brekken served as Warsaw Township Clerk for many years and on the School board. He was a life member of Vang Lutheran Church where he was baptized and confirmed. He was preceded in death by his parents, one son Evan who was a casualty of Pearl Harbor, two grandsons; Bruce Sunde and Larry Brekken, five brothers and two sisters. He is survived by his wife Tulie, five sons; Austin, Jr. of Dennison, Lyle of Cannon Falls, Levi of Portland, Oregon, Wilfred and Harvey both of Northfield, and four daughters; Caroline (Mrs. Vernon Reko) of Kenyon, Adeline (Mrs. Harold Lenway), Bertha (Mrs. Sanford Sunde) both of Faribault and Avis of Minneapolis, also 23 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and one brother Knut Svien of Red Wing.

    Burial services for S 1/C Evan Brekken were conducted at the Vang cemetery, Friday, November 14 at 2 o'clock following the arrival of the casket in Kenyon in the morning from Kansas City, Mo. Leo C. Dangers, guard of honor, accompanied the remains, and served as one of the pallbearers. Other pallbearers were Herman Aase, Jim Feeley, Shirley Cole, Clair Knowlton and Oscar Jorstad of Kenyon. Full military services were conducted by Joseph A. Gates Post No. 78 of the American Legion and Conrad Osthum Post No. 141, Veterans of Foreign Wars, of Kenyon. At the services Mrs. Brekken was presented with the flag by the honor guard. Rev. Crouch, American Legion chaplain, had charge of the services with Rev. Virgil T. Foss of Kenyon representing Vang church in the absence of Rev. Egge, who is recovering from an operation. Taps were sounded by Ronald Teigen. A firing squad took part in the services and sounded the final salute.

    Evan Benhart Brekken, S 1/C, son of Mr. and Mrs. Austin Brekken who live near Wangs, was killed in action at Pearl Harbor, Honolulu, Hawaii, while at his station, on December 7, 1941, in the first Japanese attack. He is survived, besides his parents, by four sisters: Mrs. Sanford Sunde of Faribault, Mrs. Vernon Reko, Mrs. Harold Lenway and Miss Avis Brekken of Kenyon; also five brothers, Austin, Wilfred and Ormenzo of Dennison, Lyle of Faribault and Levi of Portland, Oregon. He was the first Warsaw man killed in action in World War II and perhaps the first in Goodhue county. His parents received letters of sympathy from his commanding officer and from his shipmates. He was awarded the Order of the Purple Heart, the American Defense medal and World War II Victory medal, posthumously. Memorial services were held in Vang church, Sunday, Oct. 25, 1942. Seaman Brekken entered the U.S. naval training station at Great Lakes, Ill., October 17, 1940. He graduated November 25, 1940 and was transferred to the USS Pennsylvania at Bremerton, Washington, Dec. 6, 1940.

    Donald Detlie, age 73, of Northfield, passed away Saturday, Nov. 2, 2013, at his home following a seven-year struggle with cancer.

    Donald Leroy Detlie was born April 14, 1940, in Cannon Falls, Minn., as the son of Oscar and Ida (Svien) Detlie. At a young age his mother was diagnosed with TB and Don was raised by his foster mother, Anna Halverson, and her daughter, Sarah Simonson, in Dennison. He attended Dennison School through eighth grade and then Northfield High School.

    Following school, he began his long-time employment with Great Western Railroad as a brakeman. During his 39 years on the railroad, Great Western was combined with Northwestern Railroad and later with Union Pacific, and he retired in 2002 as a conductor.

    On May 7, 1960, he was united in marriage to Mary Elizabeth Vang at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Northfield and they made their first home in Northfield. They moved to Randolph for 12 years and in 1977 moved to their long-time home in Northfield on Jefferson Drive.

    Don was always busy in his yard mowing and flower gardening making everything just right. Christmas was his favorite holiday and he decorated their home with Christmas lights for many years. He loved to play cribbage and euchre in Dennison, bingo at the Eagles Club and the casino and card games with his family and friends. He enjoyed helping anyone who needed assistance, especially older folks and during retirement he volunteered at Northfield Senior Center. The last five years he and Mary spent a lot of time at the cabin on Cadotte Lake in Wisconsin where he was busy with yard work, fishing, playing with the grandchildren and taking long walks.

    Don is survived by his wife, Mary; children, David of Faribault, Jeffrey of New Orleans, Mark and friend Kim of Northfield, Kristin (Michael) Stanefski, South St Paul, Lisa (Trevor) Pumper of Northfield; sisters, Phyllis Ellingboe of Wabasha, Doris (Norman) Anderson of Cannon Falls, Julie (Wayne) Eddy of Northfield, Judy Kasa of Northfield; brother, Lenny Simonson of Dennison; grandchildren, Emma and Luke Stanefski, Jordan, Hank, and Josh Detlie, Logan and Max Pumper; and twin great-grandchildren, Maddison and Jaxon Detlie. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Robert; and sisters, Ruth Lundgren and Lorraine Buetow.

    Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2013, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Northfield with burial at Prairie Creek Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2013, at Bierman Funeral Home in Northfield and at the church on Tuesday one hour prior to services.
