    Notes:

Trond had been a farmer at Sygarde, Uvdal (gnr. 2/2) from 1833 to 1850. He took over the farm Bokkadn, i Bøkko, N. Ellingbø (now gnr. 33/3) in the Spring of 1850 when the previous owner, Jon Øysteinsson Ellingbø (Bø), emigrated to America with his family. Trond acquired the name Ellingbøe with the farm and kept it when he emigrated with his wife and 8 children (plus 2 granddaughters) in the spring (22 March) of 1862. Trond sold Bøkko to Knut Iversson Eltun on 25 April 1868 for 500 spd. It was said that Embrik and Helge Ellingbøe bought Bøkko from Trond and then sold half to Knut, and that Jon Endresson and Torstein, Helge's sons, each took over half of the remaining part (i.e., 1/4 part each). Most of the information after emigration of Trond and Kjersti was obtained from Lee Ann Ellingboe Randall.

He may be the Thomas Thompson, 56, living in Warsaw Twp, Goodhue County, in the 1870 census. The household consisted of Thomas, 56, Calista, 53, May 27, Ever 27, Andrew, 17, Betsey, 16, Ada, 12, Thomas, 11, and Betsey, 6. Only the younger Betsey was born in Minnesota. Next door was Torger Thompson with son Thomas, 6, and daughter Sarah, 3, both children born in Minnesota.

Trond settled in Renville County in 1871. According to the History of Renville County:

“Trond I. Ellingboe settled on section 4 {presumably of Wang Twp} in the fall of 1871, and lived there the remainder of his life.”

Land records show that the Benson land office issued Thrond I Ellingboe a 120 acre homestead on 3 Jun 1884. The land description is as follows:

    1 S½SW 5TH PM No 116 N 38 W 4
    2 SWSE 5TH PM No 116 N 38 W 4

In the 1880 census. Trond, age 66, was a farmer in Wang Township of Renville County. He lived with his wife, Kjirsti, age 64, and their son Thrond, age 22. A few farms away lived another of Trond’s sons, Andris (A. T.).

In the 1900 census, Trond, 87 (born Feb 1813) and widowed, was living with his daughter, Synneva Loe’s family in Wang Township. Synneva, age 53 (born Jul 1846), was married 23 years to Ole Loe, age 52 (born January of 1848). Synneva had borne 11 children, 6 still living. Their children at home at the time were Syver, 22 (born Sept 1877), Kirsti, 18 (born Mar 1882), and Gudbrand, 13 (born Oct 1886). Ole owned the farm. Ole had emigrated from Norway in 1872, Trond and Synneva in 1862.

From the Wang Township section of the History of Renville County:”Trond I. Ellingboe settled on section 4 in the fall of 1871, and lived there the remainder of his life. He died at the age of 89 years.”

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Baptism: 28 Dec 1834, Vang i Valdres, Oppland, Norway

    Notes:

Born in Uvdal 2/2 Sygardé. Resided in Bøkkadn 33/3 av Ellingbø between 1850 and 1862. Emigrated to the U.S. in the spring of 1862 with her parents, siblings, and 2 daughters (one by Ola, one by Nils).

Hun hadde datteren Kirsti (1853-) med Nils Trondsen Tune og datteren Anne 1857- med Ola Endresen Ellingbø. Begge barna tok hun med seg da hun dro til Amerika i 1862.

Velgjerd Trondsdtr first married Nils Trondsen TUNE, son of Trond Nilsen WANGENSTEEN (1803-1875) & Berit Andrisdtr HAMRE (1810-1847). Born on 11 Aug 1835 in Tune 36/2 nørre, Nordigarden. Nils Trondsen died in Tune 36/2 nørre, Nordigarden on 29 Sep 1879, he was 44. Buried in Vang kirkegård.

Velgjerd Trondsdtr second married Ola Endresen ELLINGBØ2,3. Resided in Fisher, Minnesota USA. Emigrated in 1866 to the USA.2

    They had one child:
    i. Anne Olsdtr. Born in 1857 in Bøkkadn 33/3 av Ellingbø. Emigrated in 1862 to the USA.

This second reference to emigrating in 1866 and living in Fisher can’t be confirmed. We know that Velgjerd, unmarried, came to the U.S. with her parents in 1862. More likely is that Velgjerd met up with Thorsten Boe when she got to the U.S. and had Berit.

Velgjerd may have died before 1870. Jim’s site says that she died in 28 Dec 1865 in Goodhue County.

He is probably the Ivar Throndson Ellingboe, “from the Vang Congregation,” who contributed money to the start-up of St. Olaf College.

Apparently went by the name of Thompson at the time of the 1880 census. The family is shown, living on a farm in Warsaw, Goodhue County, as: Iver Thompson, age 36, his wife Ambjor, 29, son Trond, 7, daughter Kjirsti, 5, son Erik, 3, and son Iver, 10 months (born in July of 1879). The family had a servant living with them named Thorwald Hanson, age 20.

Apparently he is the Iver Throndson Ellingboe buried in Vang Cemetery. Born 8 Oct 1843, died 29 April 1881. He would have died just shortly after his youngest son was conceived.

    Notes:

    Or Synnøve.

Resided in Bøkkadn 33/3 av Ellingbø between 1850 and 1862.

Synnøve Trondsdtr died in Wang township, Renville County, on 17 Feb 1929. She emigrated in 1862 to the USA. She and Syver had 3 children together and moved to Renville County. After Syver's death in 1874 she moved back to Goodhue County with her 3 sons. In 1877 she married Ole G. Loe and they had 3 children, Sever, Gilbert and Christine. They then moved back to the homestead in Renville county, where she lived until she died in 1929.

Not in Minnesota in the 1870 census.

In the 1880 census, Ole G., 32, and Soneva, 33, were living in Wang Township, Renville County. Their children were Christ, 12, Thrond, 9, Iver, 6, Sever, 2, and Marit, age 5 months and born in January.

In the 1900 census, Trond Ellingboe, 87 (born Feb 1813) and widowed, was living with his daughter, Synneva Loe’s family in Wang Township. Living next door was Ivar Soine and family, Synneva’s son from her first marriage.

In the 1910 census, Ole G., age 62, and “Soneva”, age 63, were living in Wang Township of Renville County with their son Gilbert O., age 23 (who was listed as head of the household), and their daughter, Christine, 28. Synneve and Ole are shown to have been married for 33 years although the “M1” next to Ole and the “M2” next to Synneva may mean that Ole was Synneva’s 2nd husband. Synneva has had 11 children, 6 still living, although this entry is erroneously shown for the single Christine. Next door, also a head of household, is Sever O. Loe, 32, single.

Ole G. and Soneva were living with Sever in Wang in the 1920 census. Sever may have been widowed at this point: the census form is not clear.

    Died:
death indexed as “Mrs. Syneva Soe”

Synneva married Sigurd Kristofferson (Syver C) SOINE on 6 Jul 1867 in Goodhue County, Minnesota. Sigurd (son of Christopher Larssen SØYNE and Anne Sjugurdsdatter LAJORD) was born on 26 Oct 1842 in Vang i Valdres, Oppland, Norway; died on 11 Jul 1874 in Wang Twp, Renville County, Minnesota. Synneva married Ole Gudbrandsen LOE in 1877 in Kenyon, Goodhue County, Minnesota. Ole (son of Gudbrand Olsen HØVERSTAD and Marit Ivarsdatter ELTUN) was born on 20 Jan 1848 in Vang i Valdres, Oppland, Norway; died on 16 Oct 1925 in Renville County, Minnesota. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Born in Bøkkadn 33/3 av Ellingbø. Resided in Bøkkadn 33/3 av Ellingbø between 1850 and 1862. Emigrated in 1862 to USA.

He died in Granite Falls between November of 1893 and June 7, 1900. A history of Chippewa and Lac qui Parle Counties says that he died in 1896.

In the 1885 state census, he and his family live in Granite Falls. The children listed are Cristina, Thomas, and Mary.

He is probably the Henry Thompson, 29, living with his wife Mary, 31, and daughter Christina, 8, in Granite Falls Twp, Chippewa County, Minnesota, in the 1880 census.

He is also probably the person referred to in the Dalby database on southern Minnesota deaths and cemeteries: “Ellingboe, Henry T., b. 1850, d. 1895, resident of Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota burial site unknown.”

According to the History of Renville County, Helge Ellingboe settled in the area (”just over the line in Granite Falls township”) in 1870.

Helge married Marit (Mary) Torsteinsdatter SPARSTAD on 14 Oct 1870 in Goodhue County, Minnesota. Born in Bøkkadn 33/3 av Ellingbø. Resided in Bøkkadn 33/3 av Ellingbø between 1850 and 1862. Came to the U.S. in 1862.

He may be the Anders Ellingboe who was a student at St. Olaf Academy for one year in 1875.

Land records show that the Benson land office issued Andrew T. Ellingboe a 120 acre homestead in Section 4 of Renville County on 15 Dec 1883. The land description is as follows:

    1 E½SE 5TH PM No 116 N 38 W
    2 NWSE 5TH PM No 116 N 38 W

In the 1880 census, A. T. Ellingboe was a farmer in Wang Township, Renville County. A.T. was 27, his wife Betsey was 28, their daughter Betsey was 1 and their son Thrond was 2. They lived a few farms away from A. T.’s parents. (A. T. was also a census enumerator in Renville County for the 1880 census.)

In the 1885 state census they are in Wang Twp, Renville County. Their postal address is Sacred Heart.

In the 1900 census, Andrew, age 47 (born Aug 1852), was a farmer in Wang Township of Renville County. His family consisted of his wife Marit, age 38 (born Dec 1861), son Trond, 22 (Oct 1877), Kirsti, 19 (Feb 1881), Endre, 16 (June 1883), Ivar, 14 (June 1885), Anders, 12 (Sep 1887), Clara, 9 (July 1890), Esther, 2 (Mar 1898), and George 8/12 (Sep 1899). Andrew and Marit had been married for 3 years. She had borne 2 children, both still living. Andrew emigrated in 1862, Marit in 1866.

A 1900 land ownership map of Granite Falls Twp in Chippewa County shows A T Ellingboe owning an 80 parcel with A. F. Kattevold. The parcel is the eastern half of the southeast quarter of Section 12. Contiguous with this parcel is another parcel the two of them owned in Wang Twp, Renville County. That Renville County parcel, in the 1900 land ownership map of Wang Twp, was 30.6 acres in Section 7, adjacent to a 60 acre parcel owned by M. Ellingboe.

In a 1913 land ownership map of Wang Twp in Renville County, A T Ellingboe owns a continuous parcel of 276 acres in Sections 3, 4, and 9.

In the 1920 census, he is A. T. Ellingboe, 67, living with his wife Marit, 56, and grown children Esther B., George G., and Agnes M., in Wang Twp, Renville County. Living next door or, more probably, on the same farm, are households headed by sons Endre and the single Iver as well as his nephew Thrond.

He is listed in “The Valdris Book”, a history of the Valdris Samband published in 1920 (available on Google Books) but his entry specifically says he was not a member of the Samband.

From “History of the Minnesota Valley,” published in 1882 for Renville County:

Ellingboe, A. T. A. T. Ellingboe was born in Norway, August 13, 1852, and when nine years old immigrated with the family to Goodhue county, Minnesota. He attended common school and St. Olaf’s College, Northfield. In 1874 he came to his present home in Wang; has been clerk since the organization of the town, justice since 1876, and postmaster of New Lisbon since June 1879. Betsey Leen became his wife December 16, 1876; Tom, Betsy, and Christina are their children.

From the History of Renville County:

“A triple wedding in which the hearts of six young people of Wang were made happy was one of the notable events of the early days. The ceremony was performed by that beloved pioneer preacher, the Rev. John Berg, in a schoolhouse located on the land of P. C. Brevig in Hawk Creek township. The contracting parties were A. T. Ellingboe and Betsy Lien, daughter of Anders Lien; Ole Erickson Drambroten and Anna Stende, the daughter of Anders Stende, and Gullick Helger- son Weflen and Martha Johnson Tandborg, daughter of Peter Tandborg.”

Also from the History of Renville County, also via the Dalby Database, published in 1916:

    A. T. Ellingboe was born in Norway, Aug. 13, 1852, and was brought to America in 1861 by his parents, Thrond I. and Kjirsti Kjirtsen, with his three brothers, Iver, Henry and Thron, and his four sisters, Veljer, Kjersti, Soneva and Berit, the voyage taking eleven weeks. The family came to Goodhue county, July 4, and made their home there. Here A. T. received his education at the common school and then spent one year at St. Olaf's College at Northfield, Minn. In 1873 he moved to Renville county, where he secured a homestead in section 4, Wang township, where he has lived ever since. Mr. Ellingboe has held many positions of public trust. In 1876 he was elected town clerk of Wang, which position he has held ever since. In 1877 he was elected justice of the peace, which office he also has held ever since. In 1878 he became clerk for School District No. 44. In 1880, 1890 and 1910 he was appointed enumerator of the census of Wang, Hawk Creek and Ericson toenships. In 1902 he was elected treasurer of the Hawk Creek Farmers' Mutual Insurance Co., and has held the office ever since. He was postmaster of New Lisbon for eighteen years. Mr. Ellingboe was married Dec. 16, 1876, to Berit E. Lien, daughter of Endre K. Lien and Berit (Gjevre) Lien, natives of Norway, who came from Norway in 1866. Nine children were born to this union, six of whom are living. Thron, born Oct. 6, 1877, died Sept. 18, 1913. Bertha, born April 10, 1879, married Gilbert Strand in 1914 and has one child, Bertha lola Marie. Christine, born Feb. 13, 1881, has been a teacher for ten years. Endre, born June 10, 1883, is a farmer in section 10. Wang township, and married to Gina Lofsgorden, June, 1912. Iver, born June 10, 1885, is a farmer in section 10, Wang township. Andris A., born Sept. 16, 1887, is a land owner in North Dakota. Clara, born July 16, 1890, is a teacher. Two children died in infancy. Mrs. Ellingboe died Aug. 26, 1895. Mr. Ellingboe was married a second time to Marit G. Gjevre, Aug. 1, 1897. She was a cousin of his first wife, and daughter of Gunder and Gro (Helgeson) {rjevre, natives of Norway, who came to America on the same ship as the parents of his first wife. Three children were born by this marriage: Esther, born in 1898, a student at Madison, Minn.; George, born Sept. 25, 1899, at home on the farm, and Agues, born Sept. 3, 1901, student at Maynard public schools, Maynard, Minn.

From Valdres Pioneer Tales from "Budstikken," May 1971 page 12:

It is a hundred years since the Valdres people first invaded what was to become Wang Township, Renville county Minnesota in a mass. Other settlers had come earlier: Christian O. Narvestad, Hans Grotvedt, and Theodore Rongerud, three brothers; together with Hans Gunderson and Christian Engebretson had come in June, 1867.

The first Valdreses apparently were Thomas Christofferson Lerhol and Anders Thomason Kjersten who came from Vang, Valdres in 1868. But it was not until 1871 that the great migration started and it continued until they filled the whole countryside. Among the early Valdreser were Andrew E. Rogen, Ole Halvorson Holien (Skalberg), George Halvorson Holien (Skalberg), Peter Iverson, Endre' K. Holien, Iver Oie, Iver Nystuen, Helge Evanson (Holien), H. Ellingboe, Andrew T. Ellingboe, Tosten Olson Hamre, Siver Guttormson Strand, Ole O. Strand, Ove Strand, H. H. Weflen, Ingebret Thompson, George C. Heen, Christopher Gulbrandson Heen, Mrs. Mary Ostrem Boe, Ole Thompson Grover, Gullik Weflen, Trond I. Ellingboe, Erick Erickson Viken, Trond Engebretson, Engebret Engebretson, Knute Weflen, Hans O. Berg, Ole Christopherson Soine, Ole O. Belsem, Knud Knudson Viken, Gunder O. Gjevre, Ole O. Grov, Thomas K. Weflen, Evert M. Strand, the Loes, Thorkelsons and others.

The township was organized on July 28, 1875 and the first election was held at the home of Elling Johnson. Elling was elected chairman; Ole C. Soine and O. T. Grover, supervisors; Nils Norman was elected clerk but did not qualify so A. T. Ellingboe was appointed to the post which he held for half a century. At the first regular election C. A. Evenson was elected chairman; Erick Viken and O. T. Grover, supervisor; A. T. Ellingboe, clerk, Elling Johnson, assessor; P. L. Brevig, treasurer; K. K. Viken, justice of the peace; and O. K. Williams, constable.

The township was named Wang in honor of Vang, Valdres, as is also the local church, which recently celebrated its 85th anniversary.

Throughout the century the Valdres have been in a majority in the township and continue to be so today. Not only are the Loes, Soines, Ellingboes, Haugens, Lerohls, Strands. etc.. Valdres but many names like Dembroten, Narvestad, etc. represent half-breed Veldreses.

These pioneers came with oxen and covered wagons shortly after the Indian uprisings were over. They still had to fight mosquitos, grasshoppers, prairie fires, droughts, and blizzards. Throughout the century the Valdres have been in the majority in township offices and continue to be so today.

The Wang Township section of the History of Renville County says Andrew T. Ellingboe and Ole O. Belsem (#16300) “came together with the caravan, Ellingboe furnishing a yoke of oxen and Belsem the wagon.”

It was there in 1860 that Velgjer married Andrew Svien. They moved to Goodhue county, Minnesota in 1865 where they were engaged in farming until 1876 when they moved to Northfield. She and her husband operated a hotel on Division Street. Mr. Svien also served as policeman. Mrs. Svien was a charter member of the Ladies Aid society of St. John's church and a long time member of the congregation. Mr. Svien passed away inn 1927. For several years she continued to reside at the home on Washington Street. She was cared for later in a rest home and at the time of her death was being cared for by her grandson and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. William Lockren. She is survived by one sister, Mrs. Hans Bergan, Lake Mills, Iowa; six grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren. A foster daughter, Mrs. H. E. Frazee (Susie) of Pelican Rapids, also survives.

The state’s oldest resident, Mrs. Velgjer Svien, passed away Friday, Jan. 23,1953, at the age of 110 years, 3 months, and 13 days. Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. B. R. Biorn at St. Johns Lutheran church Tuesday, Jan. 27, at 2 oclock. Gertrude Boe Overby was soloist and Mrs. H. J. Westwood was organist. Burial was beside her husband in Northfield cemetery.

Velgjer Nystuen was born at Valdres, Norway, Oct. 10, 1842. After the death of her mother which occurred when Velgjer was only eight, she came with her father and his other children to the United States in 1854. The trip across the ocean was made on a sailing vessel, taking eleven weeks. The familys first home was in Spring Prairie, Wis. After three years they moved to St. Ansgar, la., and it was here in 1860 that Velgjer was married to Andrew J. Svien. She was then 18 years of age. In 1865 Mr. and Mrs. Svien moved to a farm in Goodhue county, Minnesota. Northfield became their home in 1876 and for the remaining years of their lives. Mr. Svien died in 1926, and Mrs. Svien spent 77 years as a resident here. For a time Mr. and Mrs. Svien had a hotel on Division street in the building now occupied by the Berg and Son Upholstery business, but Mr. Svien is better remembered by the generations of his day as the town policeman, an affable man faithfully walking his beat. Mrs. Svien’s recipe for long life, “Don’t hurry,” she practiced indeed. She never allowed herself to be hurried or worried, taking each moment, as well as each day, as it came, and maintaining a serenity rarely found in this mechanized day of speed. She enjoyed remarkably good health and strength for her advanced years. On her 100th birthday she sat through an afternoon of festivities in her honor given by the ladies aid at St. John’s church, and she showed no weariness from the experience. She was a charter member of the ladies aid and a member of the church. That birthday was also marked by an interview with her on the radio, as well as another party given her at her home, at which about 100 relatives and friends came to greet her. On her 105th birthday another sizable celebration was held at her home. This too she enjoyed thoroughly, making frequent trips outside to pose for pictures. Until she was 98 Mrs. Svien lived alone and took care of her home and of herself. Her daughter Carrie, Mrs. Lervik, then came to live with her. The daughter passed away after a few years. Seven years ago a grandson, William Lockren, and Mrs. Lockren came to care for Mrs. Svien. She clung to the practice of ministering to her own needs until frailty prevented, and that was only about three years ago. The Sviens had two sons and two daughters: Carrie, John, Tom, and Anna, all of whom have died; also a foster daughter, Susie, Mrs. H. E. Frazee, who lives in Pelican Rapids. There are six grandchildren,10 great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Svien has one sister living, Mrs. Hans Bergan, Lake Mills, la. Mrs. Bergan is in her 90s. The pallbearers for Mrs. Svien were all grandnephews. They were all Nystuens, Elmer, Clarence, Luther, George, Paul, and Maurice. Mrs. Svien had seen in her life-time a panorama of marvelous changes—from sailing vessels to steamboats to aircraft; from prairie and woodland country to cities and paved highways; from covered wagons and horses to trains and automobiles. She had seen the wonders of science bring in the telephone, the electric light, the phonograph, the radio, and television. She had seen her country in the throes of five wars; The Civil War, the Spanish-American War, World Wars I and II, and the present Korean conflict. She had lived in this country under 20 presidents. Franklin Pierce was president when she arrived in 1854. The Civil War was raging when she came with her husband to Goodhue county. And their arrival in Northfield was the same year the James-Younger raid invaded the city and met its Waterloo. Her life in the Midwest embraced the period of the development of this great area from its rudest beginnings.
