He is the Tosten, son of Nels Christopherson and Berith Tostensdatter “Böesjet” born in Vang on 13 Nov 1848 and baptized on 31 Dec 1848.
In the 1880 census he was Torstein (”Sorstein”) Flaten or Flaton, 31, living in Minneapolis (”Lower Levee”) with his wife Rangdi, 23, and their three daughters Bertha, 5, Margaret, 2, and Annie, 4 months (born in January). Torstein is a carpenter.
He is shown in the 1885 state census as T. N. Flaten, living in Minneapolis. The household is himself, 35, “Maude”, 30, Bertie, 10, Dorothea, 8, Nellie, 5, and Nels, 2.
The 1895 census showed that he had been in Minnesota for 26 years which would be consistent with him and Randi emigrating in 1869. Tosten was a dairyman and he and his family lived at 1604 East Lake Street. The household consisted of himself, 47, Randa, 40, Bertha, 20, Margarite, 18, Nellie, 15, Balder, 7, Nordie, 7, Walter, 5, and Mable, 2.

Most sources on Ancestry have her birth date as 1869 or 1870 in Vang i Troms. Those dates and that location for Vang are incorrect.
Mary’s obit, as well as her gravestone, says she was born in 1869. That is incorrect.
Her obit said that she came to the U.S. at the age of 18. She and Willie and family moved to a ranch in Stanley County, South Dakota, south of Ft. Pierre, in 1906. They moved into town in 1936. Mary spent her last years in the Alleman Rest Home.
Surviving her are seven children, Goldie, Mrs. Ed Spencer, Ft. Pierre; Myrtle, Mrs. Walter Fackeiman, Ft. Pierre; Mrs. Laura Busch, Los Angeles; Orin and Stanley, Ft. Pierre, and Lowell, Pierre: eight grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and one great great grandchild. A daughter, Viola, died before Mary.

In the 1930 census, Balder is a boilermaker for a steam railroad shop and he and his family live in Willmar in a house on Litchfield Avenue that he is renting. He registered for the draft in Minneapolis on June 5, 1917. At that time he lived at 2411 11th Avenue South in Minneapolis. He was self-employed with a grocery business at 910 East 24th Street. He was married with a wife and child and claimed their dependancy as grounds for exemption from the draft. He was tall and slender with blue eyes and light hair.
In the 1930 census, he and his family live at 4101 41st Avenue South in Minneapolis. He has a grocery store.
In 1937, he was licensed to sell “lunch, groceries, soft drinks and confectionery” at 2507 East 38th Street in Minneapolis.
In the 1940 census, he and his wife and four children still lived at 4101 41st Avenue in south Minneapolis. He was a the manager of a confectionery.
He was the informant for his brother Walter’s death certificate. At that time, Nordahl lived at 4101 41st Avenue S.

In the 1910 census, she (as Mabel Flaten) and her brother Nordahl Flaten are living with their sister Nellie Pedersen (husband Christopher b. ca 1873) and her family in Minneapolis. Mabel is shown as 22 years old and is a cutter in a knitting works.
Mabel died from typhoid fever which had produced internal hemorrhaging as well as pneumonia. She lived at 2311 E 32nd Street in Minneapolis and was employed as a “cutter.”
A different Mabel Flaten, a few years older and perhaps a cousin, married a Walter G Lee in Renville County on 11 Sept 1912.

Annie was born October 27, 1925 to Nels and Jennie (Larson) Selid in rural McKenzie County, ND. She graduated from Watford City High School and then received her Registered Nurse degree from St. Luke’s School of Nursing in Fargo, ND. Annie married Alvin Amb in Pasadena, CA in 1947. They returned to Portland to farm and raise a family. Annie was nursing supervisor at Tri-County Nursing Home in Hatton, ND for several years.
Annie is survived by 4 children, Marchelle (Mark) Zweber of Viera, FL, Coleene (Barry) Fernando of Phoenix, AZ, Bradley (Ellen) Amb of Portland, ND, and Stephanie Olson of Grand Forks, ND; grandchildren, Kjersten and Andrew Linkletter, Jennifer Fetla, Jerry Homstad, and Joseph, Patrick, and Michelle McCauley; and one brother, Orville Selid of Park Rapids, MN.
She was preceded in death by her husband, 4 brothers and 1 sister.

Dorothy (Selid) Elvrum was born on Apr 13, 1927, in Watford City, ND, a daughter of Nels and Jennie Selid. She was raised and educated in Watford City and graduated from high school in 1945. Following high school, Dorothy worked for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
On April 13, 1947, Dorothy was married to Cyril Hennenfent. They had 2 children, Debbie and Wade, and made their home in Riverdale, ND. In 1973, Dorothy married Russ Elvrum and they lived in Washburn. She retired working as a secretary at the North Dakota State Capital in Bismarck.
Dorothy had a great love for her family. She was always kind and compassionate with a positive outlook on life. She enjoyed taking care of and racing thoroughbred horses and visiting with family and friends. She was a member of the Washburn American Legion Auxiliary and the First Lutheran Church of Washburn.
She is survived by her brother, Orville Selid; her sister, Annie Selid; her son-in-law, Mike Miller; and her 2 grandsons, Corey and Shawn Miller.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband (Russ Elvrum); her daughter (Debbie); her son (Wade Hennenfent); and four brothers (Ove, Alvin, Norman, and Harold Selid).

Flaten, Leo G. age 97, of Minneapolis died Friday, August 24, 2018. He was born at the family farm on Lake Elizabeth in Atwater, MN on March 9, 1921 and spent his early childhood years in Willmar and Atwater, MN. During WWII he served in the Army of the United States from August 26, 1942 through December 1, 1946 spending 2 1/2 years in England and France. Following discharge, he attended Macalester College for two years before transferring to the University of Minnesota where he received his B.S. degree in Economics in March, 1949. He was employed for 36 years by the Commerce Department of the State of Minnesota, completing his career in the position of Chief Examiner. He was an active member of Bethlehem Baptist Church since 1950. He enjoyed reading, especially history books and researching family genealogy with his niece, Jane. He lived in his home until the time of his death. He passed into eternity peacefully in the Emergency Room of Fairview Southdale Hospital surrounded by his family. Leo is survived by his daughter, Janet (Thomas) Sass, son, David Flaten and grandchildren, Jonathan (Emily) Sass, Laura Sass and Christina (Ethan) Ongstad and other relatives and friends. A memorial service will be held at Bethlehem Baptist Church, 720 13th Avenue South in Minneapolis Thursday, August 30th at 10:30 a.m. with visitation one hour prior to the service. Preceded in death by wife, Esther; parents Balder and A. Dorothy Flaten, brothers, William, Bernard, Calvin, Elroy, Raymond, Edmund, Nord, Gerald; sisters, Helen, Ann and Pearl.

Elroy "Roy" J. Flaten age 85, of rural Atwater, died Thursday morning, July 24, at the Fairview University Hospital in Minneapolis.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Tuesday, July 29, at Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church in Willmar. Military Honor Guard will be provided by the Austin F. Hanscom American Legion Post #167 of Willmar. Visitation will be from 5-7 P.M. on Monday, July 28, at Peterson Brothers Funeral Home in Willmar and one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church in Willmar are preferred.
Elroy "Roy" J. Flaten was born on August 21, 1928, in Willmar, Minnesota, the son of Balder and Alta (Peterson) Flaten. He grew up in Atwater, graduating from Atwater High School in 1945 and continuing his education at Macalester College graduating in 1949 with a degree in Mathematics. He attended graduate school at the University of Minnesota until 1950 and then began teaching math in Wabasso.
On October 20, 1951, Roy was married to Margaret "Marge" A. Mielke. They lived in Denver Colorado where Roy served in the U.S. Army at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal. Later they moved to West St. Paul, Minnesota where Roy was employed for 32 years with the 3M Company. He retired in 1988 and moved to Lake Elizabeth near Atwater. He was an active member of Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church and a volunteer for the Kandiyohi County Economic Development Commission. Roy was an avid reader, a master gardener and enjoyed woodworking.
He is survived by his loving wife, Marge of rural Atwater; four daughters, Gretchen (and Brad) Biggerstaff of Puyallup, WA., Nan Flaten of Dallas, TX., Erika Flaten of Hastings, MN., and Jennifer (and Brian) Shaul of Colorado Springs, CO; four grandchildren; and three great grandchildren. Also surviving is one brother, Leo Flaten of Minneapolis and one sister, Helen Diers of Eagan, besides other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister and eight brothers.

Nordahl T. Flaten Jr., age 88, of Burnsville, went home to heaven on October 19th . Nord is survived by his wife Mertha; his children Sonja (Fred) and Mark (Sharon), four grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Nord was born in Minneapolis and graduated from Roosevelt High in January 1943. After graduation he was inducted into the US Army and was trained for both the infantry and aviation training. In early 1945 he was shipped to Europe where he fought in the battle of the Ruhr Pocket and Drabenderhoe where he received the Bronze Star. In April 1945 his division liberated the German concentration camp at Flossenburg, Germany where two weeks earlier the Christian pastor Dietrich Bonhoeffer had been put to death by the Nazi regime by hanging. Upon the end of the war in Europe his division was deployed to Japan for the invasion of Japan and was part of the occupation forces.
Nord was a gifted creative engineer who could imagine and build most anything. During his career he was awarded several patents. He enjoyed and spent many hours on his farm in southeastern Minnesota. He also loved listening to pipe organ music on his stereo. He will be deeply missed by his wife and family.
Funeral Service, 11am Friday, October 25, 2013 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Burnsville. Visitation will be held from 10-11am prior to the service. Internment at Fort Snelling National Cemetery.
