    In the 1910 census, he is 44 and divorced and running a general store in Angora Twp, St. Louis County.

    In the 1920 census, he and “Joan” and James and Mark and Neal live in Angora Twp, St. Louis County, Minnesota. He is a merchant with a general store.

    He and Joanna and Mark lived in Seattle in that city’s 1960 directory.

    The newspaper article describing his wedding to Ferne Jones said that Neal was a “former student at Minnesota” and, at the time of his marriage, was attending the University of Washington.

    His obit:

    Neil, a fifty year resident of Salem, passed away quietly on Saturday night. He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years Ferne, who left us in 2010.

    Neil retired from a career as an engineer with the federal highway department and was active in Lion's club both before and after retirement as well as meals on wheels and the local food bank. Neil and Ferne were active members of the First Presbyterian Church for many years, particularly when their children were young, but found a spiritual home later in their lives at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Salem, where they were both members until their deaths.

    During Neil's long life he worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps during the 1930s', on tugboats on the Mississippi river, as a Medical tech during WWII, and a Civil Engineer for the BLM, then finally with the Federal Highway department. Neil graduated phi beta kappa from University of Washington in Civil Engineering. He was the first of his family with a college education thanks to the GI bill.

    Neil will be greatly missed by his by his sister Margaret (Peg) Nilsen of Edmunds WA, and his children Nancy/ Derroll Matthews, Mary/John Barry, Ed/Ingrid Burghardt, and grandchildren Joanna Matthews, Ryan Burghardt, and Andrena Burghardt as well as by many friends and other family.

    Cornelius married Ferne JONES on 18 Dec 1949 in Salem, Marion County, Oregon. Ferne was born on 22 Apr 1921 in Oregon; died on 23 Mar 2010 in Salem, Marion County, Oregon. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
