  1. 1.  Lars Christopherson SOINE was born on 14 Jun 1830 in Vang i Valdres, Oppland, Norway; died on 17 Apr 1917 in Goodhue County, Minnesota; was buried in Vang Lutheran Church Cemetery, Dennison, Goodhue County, Minnesota.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Minnesota Death Certificate: 1917-MN-004721

    Notes:

Traci’s tree refers to him as Lars Kristofferson Soine.

“Alias Lars Christopherson.” That’s what he was called in the 1880 census.

In the 1885 state census, he was Lars O. Støine of Warsaw Twp, Goodhue County. The household consists of Lars, 55, Anna, 57, Tom, 24, Gertrude, 19, Berit, 16, Christina, 9, Martha 7, “T.A.”, 25, Anna Austin, 27, Mabel A., 3, and Anna Maria, 20. From this and other information we can infer that “Anna Austin” is Lars’s oldest daughter, T.A. is her husband, Tom Austinson, and Mabel A. is Maybel Amanda Ellingboe.

As Lars Christopherson Soine, he is listed as one of the initial contributors to the start-up of St. Olaf College.

He was a farmer in Warsaw Twp in 1870.

in the 1900 census, Lars, Anna, and their single daughter Christina were living in Warsaw, Goodhue County, next door to their son and brother, Thomas Soine and his family. Lars is shown to have come to this country in 1853, Anna in 1856.

In the 1910 census, Lars and Anne are living with their son Tom and his family on Tom’s farm in Warsaw.

He is listed in “The Valdris Book”, a history of the Valdris Samband published in 1920 (available on Google Books) but his entry specifically says he was not a member of the Samband.

Shown as Lars A. on his death certificate.

From one of Lars’s descendants: "Lars Christophersen Soine was born on 14 June 1830 in Vang, Valdres Norway. He came to America with his parents in 1853, he was 23 years old. He went by the name Lars O Christophersen. He worked in the logging camps in Wisconsin. He rode the logs down the river to keep them from jumbling. Several times he was thrown, by the force of the swift current and the jerking logs, into the water. In 1856 he married Anna Ellestad. Three of their nine children were born in Wisconsin. In the early 1860's Lars and Anna went moved to Goodhue County in Minnesota where they rented a farm for a few years. Then they purchased 160 acres in Warsaw township in Goodhue County. At this time he returned to using the name Lars Soine. Lars and Anna lived in a small house on their land until 1884 when they built a 12 room house for two families. He planned this house for two families so that he would have a place of his own in their old age. Lars and Anna lived in four rooms, tworooms downstairs (12x14 and 14x16) and two rooms upstairs. Their son, Thomas, and his family of 12 lived in seven of the rooms, four big rooms downstairs and three upstairs. The room above the kitchen was used as a store room for both families. Both families used the same stairs and hallway to the second floor. Each family had their own cellar and stairs. The pump was on the porch between the two kitchens. (Don't you think many oldfolks would love this arrangement nowadays instead of the old folks home?) (Denne ideen hare nok Lars hatt med segfra Vang, han har nok tenkt på kårstuene der, da han bygde detstore huset.) These two families lived in Harmony for 24½ years. In 1916 Anna and Lars celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. Anna died that fall at the age of 83 and Lars died the following April, 1917." (This is a transcript of a handwritten remembrance of one of Lars O Soine's grandchildren). Lars was a 'charter member' of the 'Valdres Laget' of Goodhue county.

Lars married Anna Tomasdatter ELLESTAD about 1856. Anna (daughter of Tomas Knudson TØRSTAD and Berit Johannesdatter ELLESTAD) was born on 4 Sep 1833 in Lomen, Vestre Slidre i Valdres, Oppland, Norway; died on 6 Nov 1916 in Goodhue County, Minnesota; was buried in Vang Lutheran Church Cemetery, Dennison, Goodhue County, Minnesota. In the 1880 census she is age 4. In the 1895 state census she is age 19 and living at home. She is shown as a single “schoolteacher” living with her parents in the 1900 census.

The 1910 census shows that Christine Kasa was born in 1878. We’ll show the 1900 census’s birthdate because it is consistent with most other information but there is an irreconcilable difference here.

According to her death certificate, her father was John Tasa and her mother was Christine Soine. Myra had had 2 years of college and had been a schoolteacher. John P. Kildahl, of Scarsdale and White Plains, NY, died on June 17, at the age of 91. Born in Owatonna, MN on Christmas Eve, 1927, John was the second son of Johan and Edith Kildahl. His father and grandfather were Lutheran ministers, and John was ordained in the Lutheran ministry in 1953, after graduating first from St Olaf College in 1949 and then Luther Theological Seminary in 1952. John’s only brother, Paul, died in action serving in the US Army in Italy in 1944. John enlisted in the US Navy upon graduation from high school in Webster, South Dakota, and was in naval flight school when the war ended. John married Joyce Peterson, of Mabel, Minnesota, in August of 1951; they met at St Olaf in a Norwegian language class and had five children together, Kent, Margit, Lisa, Karl, and Ann. Joyce died in 2002, the love of John’s life. Their marriage together was a loving and wonderful partnership.

John’s professional life was devoted to psychotherapy and his goal of helping patients be happier, more productive, autonomous people. He earned his Ph.D in clinical psychology from NYU in 1957 and did additional training in psychotherapy at the Postgraduate Center for Mental Health and the William Alanson White Institute, both of which he eventually taught at. The author or co-author of eight books on the value of therapy, he saw the analyst’s role as that of helper and supporter; he never strayed far from the “pastoral” side of psychological assistance to patients. John was in private practice in Manhattan from 1958 until 2010. He also taught pastoral counseling at New York Theological Seminary.

An avid traveler with Joyce, and a cunning tennis and platform tennis player, John and Joyce owned and cherished a cabin at Highland Lakes, New Jersey, for sixty years. He was a member of the Fox Meadow Tennis Club in Scarsdale, and a fifty-year congregant of Grace Lutheran Church. John maintained strong ties to St Olaf College, where his grandfather was president from 1899 to 1914.

John’s life was devoted to affirming the value and joy of human life. He was a devoted and deeply loving, supportive father, and in addition to his five children he leaves a legacy of deep affection with his sons and daughter-in-law - - Catharine Hill, William Burmeister, and Alan Highet - - and his eleven grandchildren: John, Tom, and Lizzy Kildahl; Katharine and William Burmeister; Alex and Sarah Highet; Jessica Kildahl; and Karin, Peter, and Nathan Honarvar. John lived a life of loving service to others to the day he passed into the next life. A funeral service to celebrate John’s life will take place on June 26 at Grace Lutheran Church in Scarsdale at 11am.

    Notes:

On Oct. 11, 2021, Beverly Ann Wetzel, 91, died peacefully at Saint Patrick's Hospital in Missoula , MT with her loved ones by her side.

She was born on August 28,1930 in Circle, MT to Anfin Estrem and Beatha (Odness) Estrem. They later moved to Park Grove, MT and Bev loved her childhood there even though (as she put it) they were poor as church mice. It was a memorable time of her life, growing up with her siblings, full of mischief, laughter and life.

She was the youngest of seven children, Warren who died at birth, Myrtle, Florence,Harland, Richard and Howard (who died at the age of three). Her family moved to Glasgow when she was in Junior High and that is where she called home for the remainder of her life. She loved everything about Glasgow.

Bev graduated from Glasgow High School in 1948 and was the first in her family to accomplish that achievement. On August 16, 1948, Bev married Dale E. Farrington and together they had three beautiful children, Florann, Colleen and Dean, respectively. Her greatest joy in life was raising her children and being a homemaker. Bev and Dale later divorced.

In Jan. of 1975, Bev married Donald Gallagher and they enjoyed many years together until his passing in 1999. Through this marriage she had the privilege of being in Don's children's lives and the two families cherished the time they were able to all spend together. At Christmas time, Grandma Bev and Grandpa Don would host Christmas dinner and their home would be full of their children, grandchildren and eventually great grandchildren, creating some of the best memories they will all carry with them through their lives.

Bev was an excellent cook and could create a feast of a turkey big enough to feed us all along with many fabulous side dishes, plus all of her children and grandchildren's favorite sweets. After the passing of her husband Don, she was blessed by another love in life, Roy Wetzel. They married on August 20, 2004, bringing another family together with hers. They enjoyed spending the summers at The Pines in Fort Peck and visiting their children and their families.

Bev was an active member of the First Lutheran Church in Glasgow for many years. She loved playing bridge and visiting with her friends. She thought about them often, right up to her last day. Bev was good at most things she did. Along with being an excellent cook and baker, she loved to craft with beads, sewing and crochet. She painted ceramics that still adorn many loved ones homes. She made those she loved many things that were beautiful and will be cherished for years to come.

Our mom, Grandma, Grandma Great and Great Great Grandma will be missed more than she could have ever imagined. She was a hero to many of us and her forgiving, loving and understanding nature will be something we will never take for granted. She was generous and kind, loved beyond words and provided us an example of how people should be. Her sense of humor will live on in all of us and because of that our family get togethers will be full of laughter.

Bev was preceded in death by her parents and all of her siblings, her husband Don, Husband Roy, step-son Gary "Butch" Gallagher, Grandson Jace Campbell and Dustin Bietz (spouse of granddaughter Samantha).

Survivors include daughters Florann, Glasgow, MT, Colleen (Ronnie), Florence, MT and son Dean (Maria) in Alamogordo, NM. Grandchildren Deniel (Ryan) Laurel, MT, Ashley (Patrick), Lana (Nik) both of Missoula, MT, Samantha (Nick) in Glasgow, MT, Dominic in Alamogordo, NM and Anthony (Caitlin) in Newport News, VA. Bev was also a Great-Great Grandma to Adaline and Ezri. She was very proud of this accomplishment. Bev is also survived by her step-children and their families, and four nieces.

Following school he began a long career at Malt-O-Meal in Northfield, retiring in 2001 after 43 years.

He loved to garden and every spring planted many flowers at home and took particular care making his yard look colorful and well-maintained. In the summer they would go to their cabin on Lake Minnewaska near Starbuck, Minn., where Dick spent time outdoors and in his pontoon boat on the lake.
