Johanne married Hans Pedersen SKAUGEN on 14 Nov 1886 in Buskerud, Norway. Hans (son of Peder Erikssen and Gurine Johnsdatter) was born on 19 Mar 1859 in Modum, Buskerud, Norway. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

In the 1916 Canadian census, he was a farmer in Last Mountain Dsitrict, Saskatchewan, Canada. He arrived in Canada in 1911, Inga in 1912 (after first, apparently, having Tabitha in the U.S.) and their oldest four children in 1912.

In 1915, the family crossed into the U.S., headed toward Elgin where they were to be welcomed by Marie Tollefsen. Ruth, Svarre, and Gunner were listed. Tabitha may not have been listed because she was already a U.S. citizen, and/or she was already in Elgin. Joseph should have been listed but wasn’t. For Peder, his nearest relative in the country from which he came was his brother Karl in Sondefjord, Norway. Those crossing were claimed to have arrived in the port of N.Y. in May of 1908. Peder was born in Aamot. Inga was born in Skatselem (sp?) {Skotselv}

Although other sources refer to him as “Rev.”, in the 1920 census, he was a painter for a watch face company. He and his family lived in Elgin, Illinois. He and his wife and, apparently, at least four of their children came to the U.S. in 1915, after first spending time in Canada, and, apparently, spending time in the U.S. before that.

Esther Scott (nee Gulbransen) January 7, 1921 - September 4, 2008 Passed away peacefully with family by her side at her home at the Belvedere Care Centre in Coquitlam, the last of 12 siblings born to Peter and Inga Gulbransen. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who will be forever missed by her three sons: Robert (Angie), Earl (Linda), Gary (Liz); three daughters: Diane (Alain) Girond, Linda (Vern) Scott, and Cindy (Cal) Halasz; 12 grandchildren: Peter Scott, Sherri (Clark) Granger, Alex (Terri) Girond, Cheryl Scott, Kathy (Randy) Houston, Kim (Darryl) Wiebe, Mikal (Robyn) Scott, Lee (Scott) Vandop, Andrea Girond, Brad, Jeff and Kelsey Halasz; and 8 great-grandchildren: Kyle and Stephanie Granger, James and Aimee Girond, Tyler and Ryan Wiebe, Kiera and Hannah Scott.

In the 1940 census, Raymond lived at home with his parents and brother Gilbert. Raymond had a 7th grade education and was seeking farm work.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He enlisted in Eau Claire on 13 April 1942. (BIRLS says 22 Jan 1942.) He was released 23 Jan 1945 or 1946. Navy Muster rolls show he was on the Chicopee in September of 1945.

He is the most likely of the three brothers to have fathered a daughter, conceived in March of 1946 in Minneapolis.

Raymond and Alden moved to the Pacific Northwest after WWII and worked as loggers. They had little contact with the rest of the family after the war.

In August of 1957, he was charged with driving while intoxicated. He was fined $200 and sentenced to five days in jail.

He apparently was a Flathead National Forest employee. He is recorded as participating in a Red Cross First Aid class given to Flathead National Forest employees.

His Montana Death Certificate shows that he was divorced.

His address in Kalispell when he died was 215 2nd Avenue W.

His obit said that he would be given military graveside rites by a local veterans organization. He moved to the Flathead Valley in 1946 where he worked for the U.S. Forest Service until his retirement due to ill health.

His obit did not mention his surviving brother, Alden.

In the 1940 census, he was Alden Karlsrude, a hired hand on the John Stiles farm in Wheatfield Twp, Grand Forks County, North Dakota. Five years earlier, he had lived in rural Polk County, Wisconsin.

He served in the U.S. Army in World War II in the 263rd Infantry. He is recorded as arriving in the port of New York on October 30, 1945, on a ship which had sailed from Marseille. He was recorded as Aldon H Karlsrude, T Sgt. He was discharged from the U.S. Army at Camp McCoy in Wisconsin on 6 Nov 1945.

He or one of his brothers fathered a daughter, conceived in March of 1945 in Minneapolis.

He and Anita Schlegel were the witnesses to his brother Raymond’s marriage to Nora Neese. Alden and Anita may have married but there is no record of it.

In April of 1947, the Missoula newspaper reported that in Kalispell Alden Karlsrude and another man had been charged with disturbing the peace. Each was fined $25.
