    Notes:

    He graduated from Madison East High School in 1940 and enlisted in the U.S. Army in November of that year.

    He was Corporal James L Engel of the U.S. Army air force in September of 1944 when he was home visiting his parents while on a 30-day furlough.

    A James Engel, b. ca 1923, married a woman whose last name was Gleason (b. ca 1931) in Dane County on 1 Mar 1975.

    According to James’s obit (Wisconsin Daily Journal, 17 Apr 1984), he had lived most of his life in Monona but had moved to Waukesha eight years previously. He was an ESS translator for the Wisconsin Telephone Company for 36 years and retired in October of 1982. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II and was stationed at Pearl Harbor when it was attacked on December 7, 1941. He married Betty Wilson in 1975 and she survived him. He had three children: Tom and Dave, both in Madison, and a daughter Ann who lived in Santa Fe, Texas.
