Called Pearl A. in the 1900 census.

In the 1920 census, she was still living at home with her parents and younger brother in Western Twp, Otter Tail County. She was a public school teacher.

The Thursday, September 3, 1953, edition of the Fergus Falls Daily Journal notes that Mrs. Pearl Bye will be _the_ teacher for the rural school known as district 56 in Fergus Falls.

The November 28, 1953, edition of the FFDJ notes that the brother of Mrs. Eivind Bye, Leo W. Gardner, formerly of Fergus Falls, had died in Colorado on November 9th at the age of 46.

In the January 26, 1954, edition of the FFDJ, she, as Pearle E. Bye, is noted as having personal property worth $580 for the purposes of the school tax in the 3rd Ward of Fergus Falls. In that same edition, she is noted as having personal property worth $118 for the purposes of the school tax in the 4th Ward of Fergus Falls.

The February 3, 1954, edition of the FFDJ notes that “Mrs. Pearl Bye received a message Tuesday announcing the birth of a daughter, Betty Ann, to Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Clavijo, ... New Orleans. Mrs. Clavijo will be remembered in Fergus Falls as Miss Bonnie Rae Lamport, who made her home with the Bye family for several years. She attended high school here and was employed at the Northwestern Bell Telephone Company in this city.”

According to the March 20, 1954, edition of the FFDJ, she was an applicant, and unsuccessful candidate, for the county’s superintendent of schools as determined at a special meeting of the county’s board of commissioners on March 19th.

In that same edition is the note that “Mrs. Pearl Bye received word that she is the grandmother of a girl born Friday, March 19, to her son and daughter-in-law, Dr. and Mrs. Eivind C. Bye, Jr., in Mo-Kane, Mo. The baby has been named Beth Anne.”

She was a candidate for register of deeds, apparently a county position, according to the July 27, 1954, edition of the FFDJ. The August 27th edition of the FFDJ (p. 8) carried a campaign advertisement for her which included a picture. The ad says that she had lived in Fergus Falls since 1916, had married Eivind G. Bye in 1921, was widowed in 1950, and that her son Eivind Jr., and daughter Diane, had been born “here” and had lived in Otter Tail County “all their lives.” She claimed experience in business and accounting and had taught in rural schools of Otter Tail County for 20 years. She had served as District Manager of World Book Encyclopedia from 1947 to 1953. The ad also appeared in the September 3rd and 11th editions of the paper. And in the editions of the 11th and 13th she had an additional advertisement in the form of a letter. Her candidacy was unsuccessful.

She was a member of the Business and Professional Women club in Fergus Falls. She apparently had a business called Your Date Maternity Shop in Fergus Falls.

The September 24, 1955, edition of the FFDJ notes that “Mrs. Pearl Bye is up from New Brighton to spend the weekend at her home and with friends here. She teaches first grade in the Snail Lake School in New Brighton. Her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Donald Machande (Diane Bye) live in Brooklyn Terrace where they have a new home. Mrs. Machande teaches in Robbinsdale which is about nine miles from New Brighton.”

Eivind (son of Johannes Eliassen BYE and Anna E NESS) was born on 13 Oct 1897 in Fergus Falls, Otter Tail County, Minnesota; died on 1 Aug 1950 in Rochester, Olmsted County, Minnesota; was buried in Oak Grove Cemetery, Fergus Falls, Otter Tail County, Minnesota. Notes:

The obit in the November 28, 1953, edition of the FFDJ notes that he was “at one time owner of the Fergus Falls Tribune.” His father’s obit (August of 1936) said that Leo was publisher of the Fergus Falls Tribune.

An article from September, 2005, regarding survivors of Katrina:

Bonnie Clavijo, a 1940 graduate from Fergus Falls High School is one of them. At 83 years old, Clavijo has ridden out every storm and hurricane that has blown through Metairie, La. for the past 59 years, according to her cousin, Diane Machande, another Fergus Falls graduate. But Hurricane Katrina refused to be reckoned with, and Machande said her cousin was forced to evacuate her condo for the first time when flooding started engulfing the city the day after the hurricane hit. Not too far from New Orleans, Metairie was one of the cities that suffered great damage from the hurricane. Machande said Clavijo, a widow, was helped by a friend's daughter. The three were some of the last in the city to drive out by car, Machande said. They were able to reach an airport where they took a flight to safer ground in Virginia. "I was just so glad she was able to tell me she is safe and sound," Machande said. "When people get to that age it makes it difficult. The tension is greater for an old person in this situation." Machande said Clavijo did not know the state of her home, but Machande said her condo is on the third floor so hopefully some of her belongings will be spared.

From a Baton Rouge newspaper article of December 7, 2012:

Four Women Veterans of Louisiana members spoke about their experiences in the military during World War II on Oct. 13 at the National World War II Museum in New Orleans.

Geneva Johnson, Army; Bonnie Clavijo, Coast Guard; Lillie Clark, Army; and Vera Nuschler, Marines, participated in the event to educate the public about what women do in the military. Also attending the event were Vietnam-era members Ramona Hudson, Navy; Shirley Avants, Army; and Anna Sanders, Air Force.

Women Veterans of Louisiana members serve as honor guards at the funeral of any woman veteran in Louisiana.

Her daughter, Peggy Rockey, accompanied her mother on an Honor Flight out of Tulsa, Oklahoma, on June 10, 2015:

Bonnie Clavijo stood and waved proudly when the Coast Guard Hymn was played at the Bixby High School auditorium.

The World War II veteran from Bartlesville was the only member of that branch of service on the Honor Flight roster.

Clavijo, one of the first female members of the Coast Guard SPAR, originally had enlisted in the Navy.

When the call went out for volunteers she made the change.

The first assignment was the Coast Guard Office off Charleston, S.C. and the new members were quickly challenged when they had to find their own quarters.

“I had a high school education and two years world experience at that time,” she said. “I grew up in a hurry. If my folks who lived in the midwest had known why was going on they probably would have come to get us.”

Parental actions would not have been permitted since Clavijo and others had enlisted for three years.

Future enlistees would have living quarters available, but Clavijo and her colleagues were permitted to stay in their original accommodations.

Clavijo said her Coast Guard training was extended three weeks beyond that of her Navy counterparts.

The reason, she said was they had to learn the meaning of SPAR, the Coast Guard motto The Latin and English translations are Semper Partus! Always Ready!

Her rank in the Coast Guard was Y2C.

Bonnie married Sidney Edwin CLAVIJO in 1944, and was divorced. Sidney (son of Jose Maria (Joseph) CLAVIJO, Sr and Severina G CARBAJAL) was born on 7 Feb 1922 in Louisiana; died on 4 Aug 1983; was buried in Metairie Cemetery, New Orleans, Orleans Parish, Louisiana. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

His obituary in the 23 December 1968 edition of the Fergus Falls Daily Journal:

Dr. Eivind Bye, 38, son of the late Eivind Bye and Mrs. Pearl Bye, now Mrs. Charles Lambert of Mesa, Arizona, was killed in the crash of his own plane near St. Louis, Missouri, Saturday. He was accompanied by his partner who is also an attorney. He, too, died in the crash which occurred in heavy fog.

Mr. Bye was born in Fergus Falls, was baptized and confirmed in the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, and was graduated from the Fergus Falls High School in 1947. He took his pre-medical studies at Concordia College, Moorhead; he received his doctorate in osteopathy at Cooksville, Missouri, College of Osteopathy. He practiced osteopathy as physician and surgeon at Piedmont, Missouri.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia, and four daughters - Lisa, Laura, Linda, and Mary-Elizabeth, his mother, and one sister, Mrs. Donald (Diane) Machande, Edina.

Mrs. Lambert arrived Sunday from Mesa and will attend services at Piedmont, Missouri. It had been planned to bring the remains here for burial in the family lot but because of the severe weather conditions it was decided to have the chapel services this evening and services and interment Tuesday in Piedmont, Missouri.

A newspaper article included with his entry in Find A Grave:

PIEDMONT, MO. (UPI) - Funeral services will be conducted today for Roy W. McGhee and Dr. E. G. Bye, both members of the Piedmont City Council, who were killed late Saturday when McGhee’s light plane smashed into the top of Clark’s Mountain in heavy fog.

The bodies were found near the peak of the 1,500 foot mountain. The plane had partially burned.

McGhee, 42, was also Piedmont’s city attorney. He was the son of Circuit Judge Roy W. McGhee Sr., and the father of seven daughters. He had been a law school classmate of Governor Warren E. Hearnes at the University and was an honorary Missouri colonel.

Bye, 39, operated an osteopathy clinic. He was the father of four daughters.

A blog entry from 2009 that talks about Clark’s Mountain:

“Ask anybody in town about Clark’s Mountain, and they’ll either tell you to watch out for snakes when you climb it, or they’ll tell you about the plane crash that happened in 1968. That year, right before Christmas, the only doctor and lawyer in town punched their Beechcraft Bonanza into the south slope on their way back from a shopping trip to Cape Giradeau. Ironically, one of the new lawyers in town recently built himself a two story lodge on the side of the mountain that overlooks the golf course, a stick throw away from the plane crash.”
