    Merle E. Primmer, 88, of 120 South Lincoln Avenue, Viroqua, died on Tuesday morning, Sept. 5, 2000, at the Vernon Manor Nursing Home, where she had been a resident since Aug. 17, 2000. She was born in Vernon County on March 27, 1912, to Harvey and Erma (Osborn) Fish. She grew up in the Bishop Branch area, rural Viroqua, and graduated from Viroqua High School in 1930. On Sept. 24, 1930, she married Guy O. Primmer. They farmed in the town of Viroqua until retiring to Viroqua in 1976.

    She was a charter member of the Vernon County 4-H program and served as a leader for over 50 years. She was a member of the 4-H Emerald Club. She worked in food service for the Viroqua area schools when they first moved to town. In addition to her 4-H work, she taught many other young people crocheting and knitting.

    In 1984, she and Guy reigned over the Vernon County Fair as Super Senior King and Queen. Guy died on April 25, 1986. Merle was an active member of the Viroqua United Methodist Church; the Rebecca Circle; Women's Alex Lowrie Relief Corps No. 18; Regina Rebekah Lodge No. 28; and held several offices in the local AARP chapter.

    Merle is survived by two daughters, Betty Jean Zube of Viroqua; and Norma Joan (Tom) Hirsch of La Crosse; four sons, Orvis (Janice) Primmer of Viroqua, Loren (Jenese) Primmer of Coon Valley, Donald (Lillian) Primmer of Clintonville and Adrian (Linda) Primmer of Kenosha; 23 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by three sisters, Dorothy Ekum of Westby, Agnes (Martin) Morkrid of Viroqua and Rae Hope (Bill) Pace of Clinton; two brothers, Clinton Fish of Viroqua and Dale (Mary) Fish of La Farge; and other relatives and many friends.

    She was also preceded in death by a son and daughter-in-law, Leon ``Bud'' and Cleo Primmer on Aug. 12, 1997; a son-in-law, Paul Zube on July 21, 1998; one grandson, Fredrick Zube; one great-grandson, Jason Loren McCoy; one sister, Fern Morkrid; and one brother, Norman Fish.

    Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 9, 2000, at the Viroqua United Methodist Church, with Pastor Frank Thompson officiating. Burial will be at the Brush Hollow Cemetery, rural Viroqua. Friends may call from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 8 at the Thorson Funeral Home, Viroqua, where there will be a prayer service at 7 p.m. Friends may also call at the church after 10 a.m. on Saturday.

    The Thorson Funeral Home, Viroqua, is assisting the family with arrangements.

    In a letter to Cora in 1983, Dorothy says that she met Cora when she and Ernie took Ernie's folks to Minneapolis in 1939 or 1940 "when our oldest daughter was about a year old."

    She goes on to say, in recalling that event, that "they (Caroline and others) had a picnic supper out at a cabin at a lake. We got lost because Geo. forgot the way and we never had our meal until about 10 o'clock that night. We lived in Viroqua - Ernie was a bookeeper for an oil company then."

    Dorothy Mae Ekum

    VIROQUA, Wis. - Dorothy Mae Ekum, 87, of Norseland Nursing Home in Westby, Wis., and formerly of Viroqua died Sunday, Oct. 26, 2003, at Vernon Memorial Hospital in Viroqua.

    Dorothy was born in Vernon County to Harvey and Erma (Osborn) Fish on Nov. 8, 1915. On Oct. 16, 1937, she married Ernest Ekum. They farmed in the town of Franklin from 1941 until 1990 when they moved to Viroqua. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church for more than 60 years.

    Dorothy is survived by a daughter, Susanne Wedwick of Westby; a son, Leland (Lynn) Ekum of Viroqua; four grandchildren, Brad (Annette) Wedwick and Craig (Roxy) Wedwick all of Westby, Lance (Lora) Ekum of Wales, Wis., and Amy (Brian) Weaver of Winona, Minn.; seven great-grandchildren, Justin Wedwick, Abbey Wedwick, Jakob, Rebekah and Cameron Ekum and Ethan and Erik Weaver; two sisters, Agnes (Martin) Morkrid of Viroqua and Rae Hope (Bill) Pace of Clinton; two brothers, Clinton Fish of Viroqua and Dale (Mary) Fish of La Farge, Wis.

    In her March 3, 1983, letter to Cora, Dorothy Fish Ekum describes the spring house. "You mentioned about the 'spring' down on the farm. They have built that house up in the ravine behind the spring house. I knew about the other spring, too, as the old road still shows in some places. It is so pretty along the old road in the spring when the leaves on the trees first come out. "

    In a March 25, 1986, letter to Cora, Dorothy writes: "I don't know if I told you before but they have built another house in the ravine back of the spring. It's practically in the woods. It was for Mrs. Ottoson's dad. He passed away a short while ago and now they rent the house. This in on your home place Cora.”

    Dorothy was apparently associated with the Vernon Memorial Hospital, perhaps as a member of the Auxiliary. She was the donor of many memorial donations and she was the memorialized subject of many donations.

    Agnes O. Thompson-Morkrid, 98, passed away Monday, June 20, 2016, at Vernon Manor, Viroqua.

    Agnes was born Aug. 23, 1917, to Harvey and Erma (Osborne) Fish, in Viroqua. She was baptized at Bad Axe Lutheran Church. She was a member of Viroqua United Methodist Church, where she enjoyed listening to the Sunday services on the radio. She was united in marriage to Gerald Thompson, and later divorced. Agnes then married Martin Morkrid.

    Agnes lived most of her years in Vernon County, except for a few years when she lived in Madison, Wis. While in Madison, she worked for Rennebohm Drug Store, and also ran her own in-house daycare.

    She is survived by two daughters, Geraldine “Gerri” Steely of Round Rock, Texas, and Linda (Dennis) Davidson of Madison; two granddaughters, Jamie (Mark) Mathison of Sun Prairie, Wis., and Heidi (Eddie) Berebitsky of Milton, Wis.; grandsons, Jeff Davidson of Westby, Matthew (Amy) Thompson of Arbor Vitae, Wis., Adam Hilgendorf of Portage, and Michael Hilgendorf of Madison; nine great-grandchildren, Miranda Ritcher, Louis, Abigail, Samantha Berebitsky, Hannah and Jared Mathison, Marilyn Karen, Maxwell and Taylor Thompson; one great-great-grandson, Carson Ritcher; brother, Dale Fish of La Farge; son-in-law, Duane Hilgendorf of Madison; brother-in-law, Bill Pace; five stepdaughters, Gloria McCarter, Karen (Theodore) Larson, Shirley (Robert) Kelsey, Diane (Bill) Brose, and Joan (the late Earl) Morkrid; many step-grand, great, and great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

    Clinton William Fish Clinton William Fish, age 84 of Viroqua, died Wednesday, February 28, 2007, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse. He was born in Viroqua on November 2, 1922 to Harvey and Erma (Osborne) Fish. Clinton lived in the city of Viroqua and rural Viroqua for many years. He was employed as a road construction worker and farmed most of his life. He served in the U. S. Army during World War II and was a member of the American Legion Post #138 in Viroqua. Clinton is survived by two sisters, Agnes (Martin) Morkrid of Viroqua and Rae Hope (William) Paced of Clinton, Wisconsin; one brother, Dale Fish of La Farge. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews and a special friend, Mark Turben. In addition to his parents, Clinton was preceded in death by three sisters, Merle, Fern and Dorothy and one brother, Norman. He was also preceded in death by two brothers-in-law, Guy Primmer and Ernest Ekum and two sisters-in-law, Geneva Fish and Mary Fish. Funeral services were Monday, March 5, 2007, at Vosseteig-Larson Funeral Home in Viroqua. Pastor Ethan Larson officiated with burial in the Viroqua Cemetery. Friends called Monday before the time of the services at the Vosseteig-Larson Funeral Home in Viroqua.

Rae was a teacher for 34 years, teaching at the Elk Run (Vernon County) one-room school for two years, the Hickory Grove (Rock County) one-room school for three years and Clinton Elementary School for 29 years. Rae was a longtime member of the Clinton United Methodist Church and volunteered for “Meals on Wheels” and “Top of the Morning”. She taught Sunday school, Church Youth Leaders and was on the 4-H Advisory Board.     Dale E. Fish, age 83, of La Farge, passed away on Sunday, October 4th, 2020, peacefully in his home surrounded by family. He was born in Viroqua on November 30th, 1936, the son of Harvey and Erma (Osborne) Fish. He married the late Mary F. Potter on March 7th, 1959, at La Farge Free Methodist Church. After he graduated from Viroqua High School, his career path took him on many adventures. A few were hauling milk, mechanics, mink ranching, Badger Powder Plant, Wisconsin National Guard, farming, and later in life hauling Amish.

    Survivors include his loving children: daughters Dawn Parr of La Farge and Julie (Jeff) Gabel of Viola; and son David Fish of La Farge; his grandchildren: Zachary (Penny) Anderson of Sparta, Joe (Olivia) Preuss of Cazenovia, Ashley (Dan) Follendorf of Sparta, Amanda (Jeff) Stumpo of Viola; one great-grandchild James Joseph Preuss of Cazenovia and a god-daughter Louise Bjornstad of Viroqua. He is also survived by many, many nieces; nephews; cousins; in-laws; and many good friends.

    He was preceded in death by his loving wife Mary; his son Mark; his parents; his parents in law Shine and Babe Potter; his siblings and spouses: Merle (Guy) Primmer, Fern (Martin) Morkrid, Dorothy (Ernie) Ekum, Agnes (Martin) Morkrid, Norman (Geneva) Fish, Clinton Fish, Rae Hope (Bill) Pace.

    A private funeral service for family only will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 10, at the La Farge Free Methodist Church, 214 S. Cherry Street in La Farge. The service will be streamed live on the Vosseteig Funeral Home's Facebook page for the public. A drive by visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. and an in-door visitation will take place from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 11:00 a.m. Graveside services will follow at Bear Creek Cemetery with full military honors.     Earl Morkrid, 77, formerly of Viola, died Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2013, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse. 

    Earl, the son of Martin and Fern (Fish) Morkrid, was born in Viroqua on April 16, 1935. He was baptized and confirmed at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and graduated from Viroqua Area Schools. On Feb. 4, 1956, he was united in marriage to Joan Morrison. 

    Earl worked for Fairbanks-Morse in Beloit as a machinist. He was also a dairy farmer in rural Viroqua and Viola and worked for Kirkland Enterprises Cattle Company. Later, he worked for the town of Forest in Richland County as a township patrolman until retirement. 

    In his spare time he enjoyed camping, playing cards, hunting, fishing and most of all, spending time with friends and family.

    Earl is survived by his loving wife, Joan; children, Kathleen (Thomas) Kaiser and Kay (Mark) Metcalf; grandchildren, Jennifer (Nathan) Hemmersbach, Angela Kaiser, Peter Kaiser, Amber Metcalf and Megan Metcalf; great-grandchild, Aubriell McCoy; sisters, Diane (Bill) Johnson-Bross of Viroqua, Gloria McCarter of Pleasant Prairie, Karen (Ted) Larson of Westby and Shirley (Robert) Kelsey of Greenville, S.C.; and many nieces and nephews.

    He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Selma Jean; brother, Sgt. 1st Class Kenneth; brothers-in-law, Harlan Johnson and James McCarter; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Clair and Florence Morrison.

    The family would like to thank the Gundersen Lutheran doctors and nurses, with special gratitude to Dr. Siddiqi.

    Funeral services were held  Monday, Jan. 14, 2013, at the Vosseteig-Larson Funeral Home in Viroqua. The Rev. Lindsay Paul Jordan officiated; burial followed in Viroqua Cemetery. Friends called at the funeral home on Sunday.

    Sgt. Kenneth L. Morkrid, 31, formerly of Viroqua, fell to his death Saturday, Feb. 14, while participating in a cliff-scaling exercise at Ft. Bragg, N.C. He was a paratrooper with a Green Beret , Company C of the 6th Special Forces Group at Ft. Bragg. Sgt. Morkrid entered service April 17, 1958, and had served three years in Germany and two tours of duty in Vietnam.
    He was born to M. and Mrs. Martin Morkrid Jan. 20, 1939, in Viroqua and graduated from Viroqua High School. Surviving are his widow, Karen, formerly of Readstown; three daughters, Cynthia, Teresa and Kimberly, and one son, Kenneth Jr., all of Ft. Bragg; his parents of Viroqua; one brother, Earl of Viroqua; four sisters, Mrs. Harlan Johnson of Viroqua, Mrs. James McCarter of Kenosha, Mrs. Theodore Larson of Westby and Mrs. Robert Kelsey of Viola; grandparents, Mrs. Susie Morkrid of Viroqua and Mr. And Mrs. Harvey Fish of Viroqua.
    Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Church of Christ at Readstown. A Ft. Bragg chaplin and the Rev. George Weber will officiate. Burial will be in the Readstown Cemetery.

She was preceded in death by her father, Gerald Thompson and a sister, Ida Hilgendorf. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, June 6, 2007, with burial in the Viroqua Cemetery.
