A 72 year-old John Saxhaug arrived in New York aboard the S.S. Oslofjord on 10 September 1938. The Oslofjord had sailed from Oslo 9 days earlier. John was a U.S. citizen and a widower and lived at 2101 30th Avenue S. in Minneapolis.

In the 1900 census, an unmarried 34 year-old John Saxhaug (b. May 1866 in Norway) lived in Minneapolis in a rooming house at 1515 E. 19th Street. John was a mail carrier. He had come to the U.S. in 1883.

In the 1905 Minnesota census, John E. Saxhaug, 38, and his wife Carrie, 36, live at 2305 26th Avenue S. John was a mail carrier. He had been in Minnesota for 22 years and in the local enumeration district for 20 years. Carrie, born in Norway, had been in Minnesota for 17 years and in the local enumeration district for the same length of time.

In the 1910 census, John, 44, and Carrie, 42, lived at 2101 30th Avenue South. John was still a mail carrier. They now had a son, Erling, who was four years old. John and Carrie had been married 10 years.

John wasn’t living with Carrie and Erling in the 1920 census.

In the 1940 census, John lived alone in the house he owned at 2101 30th Avenue South in Minneapolis. He was 73 yeats old and divorced.

He died as John E. Saxhaug. Oscar Gulbrandson of 648 McKnight Building was the informant for his death certificate. The informant had no idea who John’s parents were. John had been a mail carrier. John’s usual residence was 2101 30th Avenue South but he had been at Homewood for 8 months when he died. He was divorced from Carrie. He died from cerebral thrombosis. His death certificate notes that John did not have a Social Security number.

Last name according to the mother’s maiden name shown in Ethel’s birth certificate. She is probably the 24 year-old Olava Saxhaug, niece, living with her aunt and uncle John (#13179) and Thea Saxhaug in Fergus Falls in the 1900 census (a couple of houses away from John M. and Gertie Bye). Olava was born in Norway in November of 1875 and came to the U.S. in 1896.

She emigrated from Trondheim as Olava Sakshaug, age 25, on 8 July 1896 aboard the feeder ship Tasso. Her destination was New York. As Olava Saxhoug, age 22, she arrived in New York aboard the S.S. Adriatic on July 25, 1896. The ship’s manifest says that she was bound for “Hope, Dak.”

From the information on her death certificate (for which her husband was the informant), we can determine that she is Olava Erlingsdatter, daughter of Erling Torbergson, b. 1829 in Inderøen, and Bergitte Ingebriktsdatter, born 1839 in Inderøen, born 16 Oct 1873 in Inderøen, living on the Saxhaugen 51b farm in the 1875 Norwegian census. That Olava was baptized on November 23, 1873, and was confirmed (as Olava Ellingsdatter Saxhoug) on 30 Sept 1888. Her father was referred to on her birth record as Elling Thorbergssen Saxhaug. Bergitte was probably born 24 Feb 1839, bapt. 14 Apr 1839, to Ingebrigt Nielsen Saxhaug and Elen Christiansdatter.

According to her death certificate, she had been in the area for 32 years. Her residence was 323 W. Bancroft. She died from a diabetic coma.

She was survived by three sisters and two brothers, one of each of which still lived in Norway. Her three siblings in the U.S. at the time of her death were: Mrs. Theo Hanson of Fergus Falls, Mrs. Andrew Stark of Hope, N.D., and John Saxhaug of Minneapolis.

He received a bachelor of law degree from Georgetown University in 1934.

Erling B. Saxhaug, 31 (b. 28 Mar 1906 in Minneapolis), arrived in New York on 24 August 1937, aboard the S.S. Ile de France which had sailed from Liverpool on August 18th. He was arriving with his wife Henrietta A., 27 (b. 25 Nov 1909 in Washington D.C.). The couple’s address was 4868 Chevy Chase Blvd, Chevy Chase, Maryland. Arriving with them, probably her parents, were Frederick W., 51, and Ella M., 52, Schneider, also of Chevy Chase, Maryland.

According to Judy, Erling was educated at the University of Minnesota as an engineer and later as an attorney. He spent his working life as a patent attorney in Washington, DC.

In the 1940 census, Henry and Mildred live in Sauk Centre. Henry is a barber.

She is not the child whose birth certificate is 1904-18606.

At the time of her step-mother’s death, for which she was the informant, she was Mrs. Henry Thielen of 727 Birch Street in Sauk Centre.

Ethel Peterson of Chicago was the informant for Mildred’s death certificate. Mildred died of septicemia from a chronic urinary tract infection.

The September 19, 1955, edition of the FFDJ notes that Edward Bye and daughter, Ethel, have returned from a trip to Norway and England.

ETHEL O. PEDERSEN, of Chelsea, MI, age 93, died Monday, August 8, 2005 at Chelsea Retirement Community. She was born February 10, 1912 in Fergus Falls, MN, the daughter of Edward P. & Olava (Saxhaug) Bye. She married John Martin Pedersen Jr. in Fergus Falls, MN on Aug. 19, 1936, and he preceded her in death on July 4, 1965. Survivors include two daughters, Judith (Kurt) Brandle of Ann Arbor, MI and Jane Smith of Salt Lake City, UT. Funeral services are pending at Nelson Funeral Home, 820 Talcott Rd, Park Ridge, IL 60068 (phone 847-823-5122). Burial will be at Mt. Emblem Cemetery in Elmhurst, IL. Local arrangements by Cole Funeral Chapel.

She was the informant for her sister Mildred’s death certificate. At that time, Ethel lived at 3335 New England Avenue in Chicago. Because Mildred’s last residence according to the SSDI was in Chicago, it’s possible that Mildred lived with Ethel for awhile before going into the nursing home in Michigan.
