The parish birth record implies his home town is Klings...{something}. This is probably Olsäter Klingermyren.

The family lived in Olsäter. In the 1861-1865 Household Examination the family resided in Wallsätra, Olsäter. In the 1886-1890 Household Examination and in the 1891-1895 Household Examination the family’s residence was called Olsäter Wästbergsäjen.

Still alive at the time of the 1890 Swedish census. At that time, the family (all but Britta who had moved out by then) resided in Olsäter in the parish of Öfre Ulleruds in the county of Värmland. No mention is made of the Wallbäck surname in the 1890 census listing.

At the time of the 1890 census, Britta and Anders Henrik and their son Albin were residing in Sund, in the parish of Elfsbacka, in the county of Värmland.

According to the 91-95 Household Examination, they were living near or with Anders Henrik’s parents in/on Sund Eg in Älvsbacka.

Had 5 children, one of whom lived in New Jersey.

Probably died before 1947 because she is not listed in the death index.

Couldn’t find Lotta in the 1890 census offered by Arkion. In the 1886-1890 Household Examination, she was still living at home.

According to the clerical survey, left her parents’ home and moved to another home in Olsäter in 1892-1894 to become a maid.

Lotta wrote the letter to Klara that told of their mother’s death. At that time she lived in Munkfors.

She is in the death index as Lotta Maria Andersson.

Changed name to Wallbäck. By the time of Heldine’s birth, he was Anders Johan Andersson Vallbäch.

At the time of the 1900 Swedish Census, he and his family were residing in Blia, in the parish of Ransäters annex, in the county of Värmland. Anders’s occupation is inhyses, probably meaning tenant farmer.

Elaine’s notes of what Mabel told her in the 1980s suggest that one of Johan’s descendants, a Heldine Wallbäck was living at Basungatan 28, 42140 Vastra Frölunda, Göteburg.

Just “Klara” in the födelsbok. That entry shows her mother as Maria Jansdotter, age 40.

According to the clerical survey, may have been confirmed June 26, 1892.

Listed as “Clara Walbuck” on Mabel’s birth certificate. (Some of Klara's siblings took the name Wallbäck.) The name on her transportation contract was Klara Andersson.

Obituary says, incorrectly, that she was born January 19, 1877, as does her death certificate. Nevertheless, the household examination for the family in the 1876-1880 period shows 1878. She also claimed to be 24 on her transportation contract which supports the 1878 date for her birth.

She and Gust had engraved wedding invitations:

The 1937-38 Brainerd city directory, which includes other communities in Crow Wing County, Mrs. Clara Landstrom is shown as living on land in Deerwood Twp that she does not own. In the 1939-40 directory, she is shown as the owner of land in section 35 of Deerwood Twp. Same in the 1942-43 directory. In the 1949 directory, her land seems to be in Carl’s name but still may be with a mortgage.

In the 1940 census, Carl and Clara live on their farm in Deerwood Twp in the same house in which they had lived in 1935. Clara had an eighth-grade education.

Services for Mrs. Landstrom

“Mrs. Clara Landstrom, a pioneer resident of Deerwood township, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Albin Everson, on Wednesday of last week.

“Born in Sweden on Jan. 19, 1877, Mrs. Landstrom had been a resident of the Deerwood area since 1903. Her husband, Gust, preceded her in death in October of 1928.

“In addition to her daughter, Mrs. Albin Everson, she is survived by another daughter, Mrs. John Everson, and a son, Carl, all of Deerwood township. Ten grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren also survive.

“Funeral services for Mrs. Landstrom were held from the Koop Funeral Home in Crosby on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. The Rev. Ewald Eisele of the Deerwood Baptist church officiated and burial was in Scandia cemetery in Deerwood.”

Emigrated to the U.S. from Varmland, Sweden, August 23, 1902, at age 24 (perhaps with her 18 year old brother, Gustaf Ludvig). The transportation contract was executed through J. Oscar Reis, who was apparently a transportation agent for the Cunard Lines in Gothenburg. The contract, for 228 Kronor, was to take Klara Andersson from Gothenburg to Duluth via Hull or Grimsby, Liverpool, and either Boston or New York. The contract says that the embarkation date from Gothenburg was August 27, 1902. Passenger list records show that Klara, as K Anderson, arrived in Boston on September 17, 1902, aboard the S.S. Ivernia which had sailed from Liverpool on September 2nd. The manifest for the Ivernia shows that her ultimate destination was Duluth where she would meet her brother, Edward Wallbak, of 208 Eater Street. Ron has the immigration inspection card that she was given in Sweden which showed that she had been vaccinated and which also shows that she was #28 on the ship’s manifest and that her contract ticket was 32006.

She seems to have been living at 1944 W 1st Street at the time of her marriage.

It appears that she was not married to Gust Landstrom at this time. According to the 1910 census, taken in early May of 1910, Gust and Klara had been married for 6 years. In that census, Klara is shown as having emigrated in 1902 and as having had 3 children, all living.

Mildred Monson interviewed Clara in August of 1936, perhaps for a newspaper. The report of that interview, with corrected spellings and punctuation, is as follows:

“The Landstroms came to Shirt Lake, District #20, in the late 1800’s, building a two-room home. Later they built a large frame house, barn, and granary and machine shed, garage, and a nice large hen-house.

“They raise berries on the flat below their building locations, overlooking the lake. It really is a beautifully laid out home. They’ve recently planted Chinese elms as the old box elders do not stand up through the years as well.

“In 1902, they were married. They were the parents of four children, all living now, save the oldest girl, Helga.

“Naomi ---- Mrs. Albin Everson of Cedar Lake, Crow Wing Co. She has three children. Her husband is a farmer.

“Mabel ---- Mrs. John Everson of Deerwood, Rt. 1. Farmer, formerly diamond drill setter.

“Carl ---- at home, farming.

“Mrs. Landstrom was born in 1870, coming to the United States at twenty-two, with her two brothers, now of Duluth. There she worked for two years, cooking for the Colonel Grover family. (Colonel Grover is in the Swedish consular office.) There she had many liberties and was treated very well, enjoying her stay in Duluth.

“But since, owing to her husband’s ill health and ultimate death, Mrs. Landstrom has worked exceedingly hard -- outdoors daytimes and indoors, night. But she always seems to have won out, being of that slender, smiling, plucky type of woman.

“Mr. Landstrom died at the age of sixty-three of heart trouble and rheumatism. ‘During his later years he had to sometimes lay off for a year at a time; but then he would go back to work, trying to make up for lost time, and would overdo.’

“Mrs. Landstrom and her son carry on berry farming and dairying and raising poultry, etc. From the wonderful east hill on which they built their home, one can look out across Shirt Lake over a fine neighborhood, and up across the way to the Alfred Johnson home.”

Klara sent quite a bit of money back home. According to receipts for an international money orders, somebody, most likely Klara, sent money back to Sweden as follows:

There were probably other transmittals; these are the ones for which, for some reason, the receipts were saved. It’s probably significant that the sending back of money may have ended after Klara’s marriage.

Clara, Carl, and Mabel attended Gladys Bergstrom’s funeral in Duluth in 1946.

Her son was the informant for her death certificate. Clara died from pneumonia, myocarditis, and artersclerosis. She spent the last 6 days of her life at the home of her daughter Naomi in Rabbit Lake.

Klara only spoke Swedish. David says that he never could understand her but Ron, who spent more time at the Landstrom farm, could.

Klara married Gustaf Jakob LANDSTRÖM on 5 Nov 1904 in Duluth, St. Louis County, Minnesota. Gustaf (son of Johan LARSSON and Sara Katrina LINDSTRÖM) was born on 14 Sep 1865 in Nordmalings, Västerbottens län, Sweden; was christened on 17 Sep 1865 in Nordmalings, Västerbottens län, Sweden; died on 28 Oct 1928 in Crow Wing County, Minnesota; was buried on 31 Oct 1928 in Deerwood Scandia Cemetery, Deerwood, Crow Wing County, Minnesota. Emigrated to the US from Värmland, March 21, 1902. The ship’s manifest that Mark found shows that Jan crossed on the Commonwealth which sailed from Liverpool on April 10, 1902, and arrived in Boston (as 21 year-old Jan Anderson) that same month. Jan’s destination is shown as 208 Exter Street in Duluth. Jan was traveling with a friend named Johan Olson.

He is probably the Edward Wallback listed in the 1902 Duluth city directory. He is a laborer boarding at 124 Devonshire.

The 1902 year of immigration is confirmed by the citation in the 1920 census. Naturalized as a citizen in 1907. These are the same dates as are cited for his wife Marie.

In the 1905 state census, Edward and Gustav Anderson were living together on Exeter Street in Duluth. Each had been in the U.S. for three years. Each was a laborer.

In the 1910 census, he is Edward G. Anderson, 30, living in Proctorknott, St. Louis County with his wife, Marie E., 27, and daughter Gladys E., 3/12. The couple has been married for one year and Marie has had only one birth. Edward is a carpenter for the railroad.

Registered for the WWI draft on September 12, 1918, at Duluth as John Edward Anderson. Living at Box 228, Proctor, MN. Employed as a carpenter. Nearest relative is Marie Elizabeth Anderson, wife. Tall and of slender build with gray eyes and dark hair.

John E Anderson and family was visited by census enumerator Iver T Anderson on January 14, 1920, while the family was living on First Street in the village of Proctorknott, Saint Louis County, Minnesota (ED #189). This village probably became the current town or city of Proctor, just northeast of Duluth. All three children are listed.

The 1930 census showed John E. Anderson, 49, his wife Marie E., 48, and their daughter Florence, 15, and son Roland E., 14, living in Duluth in a $3000 house that they owned at 118 Park Avenue. The household had a radio. John and Marie emigrated from Sweden in 1902.

In the 1936 Duluth city directory, he is a carpenter living with Marie at 118 Park Avenue.

In the 1940 census, he may be the Edward Anderson, age 59, living in a boarding house at 1915 West First Street in Duluth. He is unable to work and has no occupation.

In the 1946 Duluth city directory, he is John E Anderson, a repairman for Goodwill Industries, living with Marie at 2808 West 3rd.

He and Marie and Florence live at 2808 W 3rd Street in Duluth in the 1950 census. He is a repairman for Goodwill Industries, Marie is a linen checker for a hotel. Florence is a stenographer.

He died as John Edward Anderson. His son Roland was the informant for his death certificate. Ed had been a carpenter in the construction business and had been in the Duluth area for 50 years. At the time of his death, he and his wife Marie lived at 2808-1/2 West 3rd Street in Duluth. Roland had no idea who his father’s parents were. Ed died of a coronary occlusion brought on by cardio-vascular disease.

According to David, Ed was crippled by a construction accident and used crutches. His wife left him after that accident. (This is probably the reason why they are shown as having separate addresses for many years). Ed lived with Klara in Deerwood for awhile, perhaps while he was recovering or perhaps because he had nowhere else to go. It was because of her leaving Ed that Naomi did not like Ed’s wife.

In the 1905 state census, Edward and Gustav Anderson were living together on Exeter Street in Duluth. Each had been in the U.S. for three years. Each was a laborer.

A Gust Anderson, shoemaker, is listed in the 1910 Duluth city directory as residing and working at 101 N. 59th. The 1915 city directory lists Gust L. Anderson, shoemaker, with business at 2532 W. Superior and rooming at “2717 W 2d.”

The 1917 Duluth city directory records Gust L. Anderson, shoemaker, working at 2532 W. Superior and rooming at 2717 W. 2nd.

Mabel’s old black birth date and address book lists Gust at the 2532 West Superior address.

Registered for the draft on September 12, 1918, in Duluth, Local Board #2. Living at 2717 W 2nd St., Duluth. His occupation is shoemaker. No employer is listed (perhaps it’s himself) but an address is: 2532 West Superior Street. His nearest relative is Edward Anderson, Box 278, Proctor. He is tall and of medium build with blue eyes and brown hair. He claims to have a dislocated hip.

Shown in the 1920 census (January 3) as living as a “lodger” at 2729 West First Street in Duluth. Shown as having emigrated in 1902 and naturalized as a citizen in 1911.

Elaine recalls: “He was always dressed to the T's....meaning dress pants with a shirt and vest....at least the times we saw him.”

In the 1930 census living as a lodger at 109 27th Avenue South in Duluth. Emigrated in 1902. Is a shoe repairer; apparently owns his business.

In the 1940 census, he lives at 2713 West Huron as a lodger. He’s a 56 year-old single tailor with an eighth-grade education. He was a shoe repairer.

The St. Louis County death index has:

In the 1942-43 Duluth city directory, he is Gust L Anderson, shoe rebuilder. His business is at 2527 West Superior and his residence is 2713 Huron. In the 1944 directory, he is a shoe repairer. Same in the 1946 city directory.

The July 13, 1946, edition of the Brainerd newspaper notes that “Gust Anderson of Duluth spent Saturday and Sunday with John Everson’s.”

He died of pneumonia as Gust L. His residence was 2713 Huron Street, Duluth. His death certificate gave his occupation as shoemaker. Because Gust died at the Moose Lake State Hospital, he was either mentally ill or an alcoholic. The hospital had a cemetery so he may have been buried there.
