    Notes:

She is the Grethe Haga, age 18, from Norway and headed to Minnesota, who arrived in Boston on 19 Jun 1892 aboard the Cephalonia. She had left Trondheim, as the 18 year-old Grethe Haga, on June 1st aboard the feeder ship Juno. She gave Boston, Massachusetts, as her destination.

    She married her 2nd cousin.

She is Mrs. Gertie M. Bye in the 1905 state census. She had been in Minnesota for 13 years.

Although John is shown as a widower in the 1910 census (although not in the 1920 census), this is incorrect. Gertie spent her last years (perhaps her last 15-17 years) as an inmate in the county insane asylum. A Gertie Bye, age 37 and married, was in the Fergus Falls State Hospital at the time of the 1910 census. A Gertie Bye, age 46 and married, was in the Fergus Falls State Hospital for the Insane in the 1920 census.

She died of pneumonia brought on by septic tonsilitis. The hospital records showed her parents were Mekal Hoga and Gurena Johnson.

The coordinates of the Fergus Falls State Hospital:

In the 1930 census, she and her husband and two sons lived at 935 East 35th Street in Portland, Oregon, in a house that they owned and that was worth $5500. They had a radio. Anton was a carpenter for “residences” and had come to the U.S. in 1904.

Mabel would have been the first of her siblings to move to Portland.

As Mabel Oline Haugen, her obit was in the March 18, 1992, edition of The Oregonian:

Registered for the WWI draft on September 12, 1918. Living at 420 Channing Ave. N., Fergus Falls. Employed as a clerk at the H. P. Bye and Co., 220 Lincoln Avenue N., Fergus Falls. His closest relative is J. M. Bye of the Channing Avenue address. He is described as of medium height and build with blue eyes and light hair.

George was a private in the U.S. Army in World War I. The Find A Grave entry for Wilma says he was a Sergeant.

In the 1929 Portland, Oregon, city directory, Geo M Bye was a sander for the DmfgCo, the same job and employer as his brother John had. George lived at 935 E 35th N.

George was single and living in an apartment in Los Angeles with his brother John and John’s wife Evelyn at the time of the 1930 census. George was a janitor in an apartment building.

According to the records of the Sawtelle home for disabled veterans in Los Angeles, George enlisted in the U.S. Army on March 31, 1917, in Minneapolis and was discharged as a Private on October 25, 1917, at Fort Snelling. He had been in the 135th U.S. Infantry. He was admitted to the Sawtelle home on July 19, 1932, with a myocardial weakness. He was single, a surveyor by occupation, and was 36 years old, 5 feet six inches in height, with a ruddy complexion, light blue eyes, and brown hair. He gave as his nearest relative his brother, “Jno. G. Bye”, who lived at 74th and San Pedro in Los Angeles. George was discharged on November 8, 1932. He is shown to have had a pension of $12 which was apparently a daily allowance for the home.

In the 1933 Portland city directory, George was a laborer. He lived at 4435 NE 35th Avenue.

In the 1936/37 Portland (Oregon) city directory, he is Geo M Bye, wife Wilma, who lives at 2303 SE 12th Avenue. He is not listed in the 1937/38 Portland (Oregon) city directory.

In the 1940 census, George and Wilma and their 5 children lived at 25 SE 14th Avenue in Portland. George was a recorder for a WPA project.

In the 1941 Portland city directory, George and Wilma lived at 25 SE 14th.

In the 1943/44 Portland (Oregon) city directory, Geo M Bye and wife Wilma M lived at 9201 N Fairhaven Avenue.

In the 1946 Salt Lake City city directory, George and Wilma live in Garfield. George is an unloader for the AS&R Co.

In the 1950 census, he and and Wilma and their children live in Multnomah. George is a laborer doing odd jobs.

His SS# was issued in Oregon before 1951.

His sister Myrtle’s 1967 obituary says that George was living in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, at that time. That may have been an erroneous reference to Milwaukie, Oregon, a suburb of Portland.

    • Baptism: 27 Sep 1900, Otter Tail County, Minnesota

    Notes:

He was “at home” at the time of his father’s death.

An unnamed Bye was born to a mother named Gertie in Otter Tail County on September 7, 1900. We’ll assume that this was John.

John Gustave Bye registered for the draft on September 12, 1918. His birthday is listed as September 7, 1900. He lives at 420 Channing Ave. N., Fergus Falls. He is a clerk with the H. P. Bye and Co. at 220 Lincoln Avenue N., Fergus Falls. His nearest relative is J. M. Bye of the Channing Avenue address. He is medium height and build with blue eyes and light hair.

He worked for Otter Tail Power Company in Fergus Falls at the time of his mother’s death in 1926.

In the 1929 Portland, Oregon, city directory, he was a sander for the D Manufacturing Co. He and Evelyn lived at 5254 74th SE.

John G. was married and he and his wife were living with George in an apartment in Los Angeles at the time of the 1930 census. John and his wife Evelyn A. had been married a year. John was a sander at a furniture company.

In the 1932 California voter registration, John G and Mrs Evelyn A Bye lived at 308 E 74th Street in Los Angeles. He registered as a Democrat, she as a Republican. This may be the “74th and San Pedro” address that George cites as the address of “Jno. G. Bye” in George’s admission to the Sawtelle home in July of 1932.

For the 1932-33 registration year, John’s car registered in Oregon was a 1928 Pontiac coupe. He lived at 7228 55th Avenue SE.

In the 1936/37 Portland (Oregon) city directory, John G Bye is a factory worker at DMfgCo. He and his wife Evelyn live at 5830 SE 80th Avenue. In the 1937/38 Portland (Oregon) city directory, John G is a “furnwkr DMfgCo.” He and Evelyn still live at 5830 SE 80th Avenue.

In the 1940 census, he and Evelyn and Robert and Mary live at 5839 SE 80th in Portland, Oregon. John had had 1 year of high school, Evelyn had had 3 years. John was a machine sander in the furniture industry.

A John G. Bye married a Ruth Ella Hardin (neé Descombes), both of Multnomah County, in Vancouver, Clark County, Washington, on 21 Jul 1945. That Ruth died 6 Feb 1993 in Multnomah County as Ruth E Johnson.

In the 1953 Portland, Oregon, city directory, John G Bye and his wife Ruth E lived at 2817 NW Thurman. He was a machinist. They were still together at 2817 NW Thurman in the 1956 city directory. At that time, John was a machinist for Schmitt Steel and Ruth was a machine operator for Thurlow, Inc. Listed as also living at the 2817 NW Thurman address in that 1956 directory was Robert E Bye, a tracer for Willamette Iron & Steel. John G and Ruth E were still listed together as spouses in the 1959 and 1960 Portland city directories.

John G. Bye, born Sep of 1900, died April 9, 1976, in Washington County, Oregon. His wife was named Betty. His death cert was 76-07163.

Johnny and Betty lived in Beaverton, Oregon, according to Michael.

  4. 5.  Myrtle Theodora BYE Descendancy chart to this point (1.Grethe1) was born on 25 Aug 1903 in Fergus Falls, Otter Tail County, Minnesota; died on 8 Feb 1967 in Multnomah County, Oregon; was buried in Wilhelm’s Portland Memorial Mausoleum, Portland, Multnomah County, Oregon.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Minnesota Birth Certificate: 1903-18586
    • Occupation: Public School Teacher
    • Oregon Death Certificate: 2822
    • Baptism: 20 Sep 1903, Otter Tail County, Minnesota

    Notes:

Her birth certificate was amended on February 28, 1944.

The May 18, 1921, edition of the Fergus Falls Ugeblad, a Norwegian language newspaper, records her as graduating in the “Commercial Course” of some school whose name can’t be determined by me (probably a high school). Her second cousin Mildred Bye was recorded in the same article as graduating in that school’s “Classical Course.”

The 1925 North Dakota census records a 22 year-old Myrtle Bye living in Fargo, North Dakota.

In the 1925 Astoria, Oregon, city directory, probably prepared in 1924, she was Myrtle Bye, Public School Teacher, living at 397 4th.

She was “of Astoria” at the time of her mother’s death. That would have been Astoria, Oregon, in Clatsop County.

Myrtle T. Bye, age 26 and a single public school teacher, was living in Portland, Oregon, lodging with a Melin family at the time of the 1930 census. She was born in Minnesota and her parents were born in Norway.

In the 1940 census, she and Leo D lived in the Rose Park section of Portland with Robert, 16, Floyd, 14, and Patsey, 7.

In the 1950 census, she was divorced and was an elementary school teacher. She lived at 4215 NE 114th with her daughter Patricia and her step-son Floyd.

Her usual residence at her time of death was 4215 N.E. 114th Avenue in Portland. She died at 5505 S.E. 136th Avenue. She died of colon cancer. Her daughter Patricia was the informant for her death certificate.

    According to Michael:

She was called "Teddy" when she was a young woman. She attended normal school in Minot, North Dakota, and moved to Oregon to teach. Myrtle never remarried and died of cancer in Portland in 1967. She was very strong-willed and an extremely capable and dedicated teacher. The primary school where she last taught held a small memorial service for her and planted a tree in her honor. {Myrtle} taught first grade for many years in the Parkrose School District.

    Her obit in The Oregonian:

Mrs. Myrtle T. Boyle, 4215 NE 114th Ave., died Wednesday at Portland after an extended illness. Her funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Gethsemane Lutheran Church.

Mrs. Boyle was born Aug. 25, 1903, at Fergus Falls, Minnesota, and came to Oregon in 1922. She taught in the Parkrose Schools for more than 20 years. She was a member of Gethsemane Lutheran Church.

Survivors include two sons, Floyd, of Portland, and Robert, of Wishram, Wash.; one daughter, Patricia Taylor, of Portland; 11 grandchildren; two brothers, John Bye, of Portland, and George Bye, of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and two sisters, Mabel Haugen, of Portland, and Margaret Ellingboe, of Hemet, Calif.

The family requests that any remembrance be in the form of a contribution to the Gethsemane Lutheran Church Building Fund.

  5. 6.  Margaret BYE Descendancy chart to this point (1.Grethe1) was born on 7 Nov 1908 in Fergus Falls, Otter Tail County, Minnesota; died on 25 Jan 2004 in Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Minnesota Birth Certificate: 1908-18515
    • Baptism: 4 Feb 1909, Fergus Falls, Otter Tail County, Minnesota
    • Confirmation: 14 May 1922, Fergus Falls, Otter Tail County, Minnesota

    Notes:

No first name shown on birth certificate. Mother’s maiden name shown as Hagen.

Spelled Margarette in the 1910 census.

She was a student at St. Olaf College at the time of her mother’s death.

She graduated from St. Olaf in the class of 1930.

Margaret Bye was, apparently, adopted by her uncle after her father’s (and mother’s) death. She is listed as a foster daughter in the obituary for Hans Bye.

Her marriage to John Ellingboe was announced in the Northfield News edition of June 1, 1928.

Elaine visited the Ellingboes in the middle of August, 1943. The Ellingboes lived in Robbinsdale at that time.

Margaret was the informant for her uncle Hans’s death certificate. At that time (late 1946), her address was Richfield Station, Route 4, Minneapolis. Margaret knew that Hans’s parents were Martinus Bye and Olianna Johnson.

Margaret and John Sr. moved to Phoenix in 1953 according to their son.

Margaret’s obit in the Arizona Republic:

    Margaret Bye Ellingboe

Margaret Bye Ellingboe, Born November 7, 1908 in Fergus Falls, Minnesota, passed away January 25, 2004. Preceded in death by her husband, John Sr., survived by her son, John Jr., of Gualala, CA, and her daughter, Mary Masterson of Phoenix, 7 grandchildren, and 9 great grandchildren. No memorial service is planned. Contributions may be made to Habitat for Humanity, Phoenix Rescue Mission, or Trinity Hospice. (Published in the Arizona Republic from 1/31/2004 - 2/1/2004.)

Margaret Bye's father John was one of the charter members of the Trønderlag of America, the bygdelag for the Trøndelag region. John's brother Hans, John's and Hans's uncle Johannes (John) E. Bye, and John's and Hans's uncle Theodor Johnson (all of Fergus Falls) were also charter members. Although they weren't charter members, Johan Nathan Kildahl and his son Harald B. Kildahl joined the lag within its first two years. I suspect that this Trønderlag connection was what led Hans Bye (Margaret's uncle as well as step-father by that time) to send Margaret Bye to Kildahl's St. Olaf in 1926. Hans, having no children of his own, would have had the means to support Margaret's education and may have met Kildahl or known his fellow Trønder was president of St. Olaf. Northfield was quite a ways from Fergus Falls so it would have been unusual (except for the Trønderlag connection) for Margaret to have been sent off to St. Olaf.

Mabel’s address book had Jack and Margaret’s address as 2002 W Sunnyside Dr, GH #20, Phoenix, AZ 85029

    Baptism:
She had been baptized earlier at home on November 10, 1908, probably because her survival had been in doubt.

    Confirmation:

Margaret married John Leverne ELLINGBOE, Sr on 21 Nov 1927 in Rice County, Minnesota. John (son of John Maurice ELLINGBOE and Elise (Lizzie) HENDRICKSON) was born on 12 Jul 1905 in Northfield, Rice County, Minnesota; died on 10 Feb 1998 in Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona. Other Events and Attributes:

    • Occupation: Nurse

    Notes:

An article in the December 10, 1950, edition of The Oregonian:

“Bethel No. 31, Job’s Daughters, will install Patricia Boyle as honored queen of ceremonies at 8 p.m. Saturday at Parkrose Masonic temple.”

Graduated from Parkrose High School in Portland, Oregon. Patricia was “a hospice RN who still works part time in Sandy, Oregon.”

    She had seven children.

Pat Brown passed away peacefully the morning of November 30, 2022 in Sandy, Oregon. Family and friends had just celebrated her 90th birthday in October.

Pat was born in Klamath Falls, Oregon, to parents Leo (Don) and Myrtle Boyle, joining brothers Robert (Bob) and Floyd. The Boyle family moved to Portland in 1940 and Pat graduated from Parkrose High School ten years later. A high school cheerleader, Pat was popular and was voted Homecoming Queen.

Pat met Robert (Bob) Taylor in 1949, marrying in 1951. Pat and Bob moved to Oceanside, California, in 1951 after Bob joined the U.S. Marine Corps. In 1953, Michael (Mike) Taylor, the first of seven children, arrived.

After Bob’s honorable discharge in 1954, the family moved to Portland and Mike was soon joined by brothers Jeffery (Jeff) in 1954, Daniel (Dan) in 1956, Christopher (Casey) in 1957 and Joseph (Joe) in 1960. The first of two daughters, Rachel, was born in 1963. The Taylor family moved to Gresham in 1967 and the last of the Taylor children, Katherine (Katie) was later born.

Bob was a career educator, high school principal and curriculum consultant, and Pat’s mother was a first grade teacher. All the Taylor children could read and write before they entered school, and they all learned to play at least one musical instrument. Bob was able to bring home the latest movies, on reels, to play for family movie night, with Pat providing popcorn and refreshments for the children.

Pat and Bob divorced in 1981 and Pat returned to college in 1983, ultimately earning a her degree as a Registered Nurse. Her nearly 21-year career at Mt. Hood Hospice began in 1987. Pat served as a Patient Care Coordinator, and from 2000-2011 in quality care. Pat’s kindness and gentle loving nature allowed her to provide exceptional care to hospice patients.

In 1991 Pat met widower Duane Brown, a long-time Hoodland resident with four adult children. They married in 1992 and resided in Brightwood where they shared a love of family, art and nature.

Duane passed away in 2009. Pat later moved to a Sandy senior living community where she resided until her death. Mt. Hood Hospice provided end of life care.

She enjoyed family vacations to the Oregon coast and mountains, and she returned to the coast to vacation with her friends each year in her later life.

Pat was an accomplished artist, her acrylic and watercolor paintings often winning at local art shows. Her beautiful art graces the homes of many, including those of her children. Her sons remember her creating custom-painted lunch boxes for them that were the envy of other children at school.

Pat dedicated herself to her family and was an exceptional wife, mother, neighbor and friend. Despite her large family, Pat always made time for everyone. She cared deeply for her family and friends. She did this not out of obligation, but because of who she was. Pat was always beautiful, both inside and out, and will long be remembered for her elegant appearance and kind, graceful manner. Pat was a friend to all, a counselor to most, and “Mom” to many.

Her gentle, loving spirit, sense of humor and optimism will be missed by all.

Pat is survived and lovingly remembered by her children Mike, Dan (Julie), Casey (Jayne), Joe (Maggie), Rachel (Jay) and Katie; daughter-in-law Karen; step-children Mary, David, Dan (Naheed) and Trudy (Russ); nine grandchildren and one great grandchild. Pat is predeceased by her parents, first husband Bob, second husband Duane, son Jeff, and brothers Bob and Floyd.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Peace Lutheran Church, 2201 N. Rosa Parks Way, Portland on Saturday, January 28 at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, donations in Pat’s memory may be made to Mt. Hood Hospice.

The above obituary does not mention Patricia’s half-sisters, Collette and Colleen, nor does it mention her half-brother Donald.

When young, he adored the game of football and later rooting-on his favorite teams. After moving to California, he learned to ride bicycles and often joined Priss on her daily trips to the swimming pool.

He was a creative, designing gardens, making jewelry, or doodling on any available notepad.

Mostly, he was an everyday hero, offering a smile and wave to anyone who walked by, supporter of small business, and gracious giver of his time.

In the last years, Jack endured many health issues but was an eternal optimist always looking to make the “big comeback.” Despite his challenges, music continued to be a lifelong comfort and enjoyed tapping his fingers along to any snappy jazz tune.

His body may have given out but his spirit remained stubbornly strong and, as in life, he died his way.

Jack is survived by his wife, Priss, of 39 years, his children John, Kirsten, Karen, Bruce, their spouses, grandchildren, great-grandchild, and Priss’s daughter Ann.
