The Whiteley family tree calls her Leona Madelene Hopper.

In the 1900 census, she was Leone Hopper, the step-daughter of William (and Chloe) Whiteley, a farmer in Noonan Twp, Ramsey County, North Dakota. She is shown as born in Wisconsin in August of 1886.

Her marriage to Frank Augustine was apparently over in early 1907. A brief note in the Omaha World-Herald, February 11, 1907: “I will not be responsible for any goods contracted by my wife. Frank Augustine.”

Her husband was the informant for her death certificate. She had lived in the city for 42 years (which suggests that she had moved to Minneapolis in 1913). Her residence was 3525 3rd Avenue South. She died of heart failure.

Leona married Francis Charles (Frank) AUGUSTINE on 17 Oct 1903 in Traverse County, Minnesota, and was divorced in 1907. His birth was reported in the Omaha World-Herald on October 6, 1904, in a brief entry in “South Omaha Brevities”: “Births reported at the city clerk’s office yesterday were: Frank Augustine, 3706 R Street, boy.”

In the 1922 Minneapolis city directory, he was a mechanic for L E Robinson. He lived at 5723 Lyndale Avenue S.

In the 1924 Minneapolis city directory, he was still a mechanic. He lived with his stepfather (and, presumably, his mother) at 1611 E 22nd.

In the 1927 Minneapolis city directory, Marion and his stepfather and two other men (Frank West and Albert Besser) had a syrup manufacturing business called Claassen & West at 1414 E Hennepin. Robert and Marion lived at 353 N E Garfield.

In the 1928 and 1929 Minneapolis city directories, Marion lived at 2833 Fremont Ave S, the same address as his stepfather.

His father was born in the “United States” in the 1930 census.

In the 1932 Minneapolis city directory, Marion, his mother, and his stepfather lived at 3845 35th Avenue S. Marion was a serviceman for Diamond Tire Sales Co. Robert was a driver.

In the 1936 city directory, Marion is a gas attendant for Diamond Tire Sales Co. He lives at 2639 Grand Avenue.

In the 1937 city directory, Marion is a station attendant at Diamond Tire Sales Co. He lives at 2639 Grand Avenue.

Apparently lived at 3744 18th Avenue S. in Minneapolis.

His wife Margaret was the informant for his death certificate. They lived at 3744 18th Avenue South. Marion was an electrician for the Soo Line. He died from lung cancer. His death certificate gave his father’s name as Robert Claassen and his mother’s name as Leona Benjamin.

His middle name was Laurence according to the Whiteley family tree on Ancestry.

Her birth was reported in the March 16, 1906, edition of the Omaha World Herald as follows in a small entry in “South Omaha Brevities”:

“The advent of a son [sic] is reported by Frank Augustine, Thirty-Eighth and Q Streets.”

In the 1920 census, she is living with her mother and step-father in Richfield. She is listed as “Leona F M Claassen.” The Whiteley family tree calls her Leona Frances Marie Augustine. She was also called Leona F. M. in the 1940 census.

Her son David was the informant for her death certificate. Her father was Frank Augustine and her mother was Leona Claassen. Her usual residence was 3141 Fairchild. She died from congestive heart failure and dementia.

An Ancestry tree has this Leona’s birth location as North Dakota. In the 1930 census, this Leona is shown as born in Wisconsin and her mother in North Dakota. In the 1940 census, for which she was the family’s informant, she is shown as born in Nebraska and having had two years of high school.

Roe, Marion Robert age 91 of Plymouth, passed away peacefully on July 13, 2015. Preceded in death by sister, Leola Grand; sister-in-law, Helen Roe. Survived by daughters, LeAnn Roe, Jody Roe and their mother, Audrey L. Roe; beloved granddaughter, Casey (Kurt) Elden; brothers, David (Audrey H.) Roe, Richard Lee Roe; many nieces, nephews and special friends. Marion was a graduate of Roosevelt High School and Augsburg College. He served in the US Navy/ Reserves for 38 years and retired after 42 years with Burlington Northern Railroad. Memorial service 11 AM Monday, July 20 with visitation beginning at 10 AM, Oak Knoll Lutheran Church, Minnetonka.

His daughter, who was the informant for his death certificate, knew that Marion’s mother’s maiden name was Augustine.

Dave attended public schools in Minneapolis and served in the U.S. Navy during WWII between 1942 and 1946. Upon discharge from the Navy, he joined the Lathers Union and was elected Business Agent in 1952. He represented the Minneapolis and State Building and Construction Trades Councils, and also served as a District Vice President of the Minnesota AFL-CIO and Vice President of the Minneapolis Central Labor Union Council. He was active in the DFL, ran for mayor of Minneapolis in 1961, and was a delegate to all Democratic National Conventions from 1960 - 1984. Dave was elected President of the Minnesota AFL-CIO in 1966, and led the labor movement in successful efforts to secure collective bargaining rights for public sector workers, OSHA, tip credit, equal rights for women and enacting Minnesota's first minimum wage. He was always working to make life better for others. Following his retirement in 1984, he continued his work on behalf of labor, most notably as the driving force behind creation of a Workers Memorial Garden on the State Capitol grounds. Dave also served on the Board of Regents for the University of Minnesota for 12 years, retiring from the Board in 1993. He served on numerous boards and commissions over the years, including his recent term on the Minnesota Racing Commission. Dave was also very proud of his membership in the American Legion, Bearcat Post #504, and served as its Commander until his passing. Special thanks to the Allina Hospice team and the staff at St. Gertrude's TCU for the loving care provided. We are forever grateful for all the kindness shown during his recent stay.
