She is listed as emigrating from Sakshaug on August 8, 1881, as Grethe Oline Andreasdatter Nes i Strommen, pige, confirmed 10 May 1873. She was apparently traveling with two other young women according to the church book, one of whom was her first cousin Gurine Berntsdatter Aarfold.

Travelled to Fergus Falls in 1881 and then supposedly lived in Fargo after her marriage, according to NÆSS.

According to the 1900 census, she had had 12 children, 11 still living. The child who died must have been born in about 1887, between Annie and Gustave. That’s what is shown here. In the 1910 census, the numbers were 13 and 12.

    Notes:

Or Anne Beret. She is Anne Bergithe in the Sakshaug church book birth record.

Living with her parents and siblings in the 1875 Norwegian census.

According to Nina and NÆSS, Anne Bergithe travelled to Fergus Falls in 1884 or 1885 and married Andrew Grande. They lived in Virginia, Minnesota, and she had six children.

She is not listed in the Sakshaug emigration records. The 1900 census lists her year of immigration as 1885. The 1910 census lists her year of immigration as 1886. The 1920 census lists her year of immigration as “Un.” the 1930 census lists her year of immigration as 1884.

In the 1905 Minnesota state census, Andrew and Annie (as Grandy) and family live in Missabe Mountain Twp in St. Louis County. Andrew is a carpenter.

In the 1900 census, Annie (b. Jul 1864) and Andrew (b. Jun 1858) lived in Duluth. Andrew is a carpenter and came to the U.S. in 1882. Annie came in 1885. Their children: Mamie J (b. in the 1910 census, the Grandes live in Virginia where Andrew is a building contractor. Annie B has had seven children, six still living.

In her April 24, 1920, passport application, she claims to have lived in the U.S. uninterruptedly for 35 years from 1885 to 1920, of which 15 years were in Duluth and 20 years in Virginia, Minnesota. She gives her name as Annie Grande and claims to be going abroad for no more than six months to visit relatives. She intends to leave the U.S. at the port of New York aboard a ship of the Norwegian-American line on June 20, 1920. She is described as 55 years old, 5 feet, 3 inches tall with blue eyes and gray hair. She lives at 105 N, Fifth Ave. W., Virginia, Minnesota.

The New York Passenger lists show that she returned to New York on September 7, 1920, aboard the SS Stavangerfjord which had sailed from Christiania on August 28th. She seems to have been accompanied by Christ and Sara Christofferson, of 512 2nd Street in Virginia. Christ’s passport number was 1 number higher than Annie’s (31048 vs. 31047).

In the 1930 census, Annie was a widow living in Virginia with her sons and daughter Mamie.

In the 1940 census, Annie and Mayme lived 107 5th Avenue North in Virginia in a house they owned worth $10,000 (!), the same house in which both had lived five years earlier. Neither Annie nor Mayme were employed but Mayme was a high school graduate. Living with them was a lodger, Florence Iverson, a third-grade teacher in the public school.

ROSVOLL, Randi RANDI VEIE ROSVOLL Randi Veie Rosvoll died peacefully on Sunday, August 19, 2012 at her home in Atlanta, Georgia, surrounded by family members. Randi was born in Trondheim, Norway on April 26, 1928, where she grew up with parents, Margit, b. Næss and Alv Veie Rosvoll, her big brother, Bjørn and her younger twin brothers, Tor and Odd. Being the only girl was not easy in the WWII and postwar era in Norway. Boys were expected to get an education and girls were expected to get married and take care of a family. Randi's dream was to become a nurse, but after high school, as her brothers pursued higher education, she got a job as a telephone operator. In 1949, her mother's cousin, Myrtle Grande and her husband, Dr. Theodore Winship, who had no children of their own, invited her to stay with them in Washington DC and go to college. She completed undergrad studies at the American University with distinction and continued her education at George Washington University, School of Medicine and Health Sciences, where she obtained a M.D. degree in 1957 and specialized in pathology, like Theodore Winship. She was one among only 5 women to graduate. After her residency and internship, she was hired by Emory University in 1963 as a pathologist at Grady Memorial Hospital. She worked the remainder of her career for the Clinical Laboratories at Emory University Hospital. In addition, she worked a few years for New England Deaconess Hospital and Harvard Medical School in the early 1970s. She worked in Saudi-Arabia as a consultant with the Arabian American Oil Company as well. Randi has taught at Harvard, Georgia State and Emory University Medical School. She produced numerous publications and manuals, and participated in a number of national organizations, most effectively with the American Association of Blood Banks, where she served as an Inspector, Area Chairwoman, National Vice Chairwoman and National Chairwoman. She belonged to 13 different scientific societies. Randi served as the president of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniels of the South, and she is also past president of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniels U.S.A. She was a lifetime member. Randi loved her dogs and has had 8 Cavaliers. Randi never married but was surrounded by a huge family. Inspired by her own experience with the Winship family, she brought all of her nieces and 1 nephew from Norway to attend college. One niece still lives in Atlanta with her husband and 4 children. More than 40 family members gathered at her grandparents' farm every year when she returned to Norway. She was the matriarch of the family, a spot that will be hard to fill. Her care for others and the tendency to spoil us all rotten, being a best friend, enjoying some wine and small-talk in front of a warm fire, not to mention extravagant parties "made from scratch" are what many remember so well about our Randi. She would not pass up any challenge, and charged forward full force. After a lifetime of perpetual motion abroad, her final resting place will be in Norway. Randi is survived by her brother, Odd Veie Rosvoll, nieces and nephews: Brit & Bengt, Knut & Eli, Anne, Nina & Tom, Vigdis & Lars, Stein & Randi, Erik & Vibeke, Bjørn & Hilde, Per Frithjof & Ingunn, Jørgen, Bernt, and 30+ "grand and great-grand children". Please join the family for a celebration of Randi's life on September 8 at 1473 Rainier Falls Drive, Atlanta, GA 30329 at 4:00pm. In lieu of flowers donations to "Doctors Without Borders" would be appreciated.
