Earl P. Synstelien, 79, of Willmar, died Tuesday, June 19, 2007, at Rice Care Center in Willmar.??Earl Phillip Synstelien was born Sept. 20, 1927, in Dalton, the son of Carl and Palma (Dahlager) Synstelien. He grew up and received his education in the Dalton community. In December 1945, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served stateside during World War II. He was discharged in August 1947 with the rank of Staff Sergeant. ??On Oct. 24, 1948, he married Margaret Hegstad. They lived in Le Sueur, where Earl worked as a meat cutter.??On Oct. 31, 1969, he married Margot (Link) Ellingboe. They lived in Willmar, Appleton, Tucson, Ariz., and Cottonwood, Ariz., before returning to Willmar in the mid-1990s.??He owned and operated Earl’s Meat Center in Willmar and later in Appleton. He won numerous state and national meat processing awards and served as a director for the Minnesota Frozen Food Locker Association. ??He also worked at Wal-Mart stores in Willmar and Cottonwood, Ariz., during his retirement years. He was a member of the American Legion and V.F.W. posts in Appleton.??He is survived by his wife, Margot of Willmar; a daughter, Mary Kay Synstelien of St. Paul; a stepson, Steven (and Shelia) Ellingboe of Willmar; a stepdaughter, Karin Skarpness (and Ken Grundseth) of Brooten; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a brother, Dennis Synstelien of Fergus Falls; two sisters, Dorothy Kaasa of Elbow Lake and Eunice (and Jerry) Hanson of Waseca; and other relatives and friends.??He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Jerome Synstelien; and a sister, Jeanette Brown.??Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, at Peterson Brothers Funeral Home in Willmar. A private burial is planned at a later date. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service, with military honors provided by the American Legion.

Dorothy Kaasa, 91, formerly of Ten Mile Lake, and Elbow Lake, passed away Monday, Dec. 5, 2016, at her home in Osakis, surrounded by her family.
Born on July 8, 1925, in Fergus Falls the fourth child of six born to Carl and Palma (Dahlager) Synstelien, Dorothy grew up in the Ten Mile Lake area and received her schooling there, graduating from Fergus Falls High School. She then worked at the post office in Dalton before starting her adventure with Ivan Kaasa.
Dorothy and Ivan were married Dec. 31, 1946. The couple made their home in Dalton and in 1958 moved to a farm half a mile north of Dalton.
Ivan passed away Aug. 14, 1993. Dorothy remained on the farm until 1995. She then moved to Elbow Lake, living there from 1995 until 2011 when she made the move to Osakis to be closer to her children.
The family is forever grateful to Mary Brissett for being Mom’s roommate and PCA for the last four years of her life. You made it possible for Mom to stay comfortably at home until the end.
Dorothy enjoyed playing the organ and singing with Ivan and her family.
She enjoyed baking, bowling and bingo!
She thoroughly enjoyed Wii bowling with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Dorothy is survived by brother, Dennis Synstelien of Fergus Falls; daughter, Ann (Paul) Hartmann of Osakis; son, Tom Kaasa of Osakis; eight grandchildren, Michelle, Jeremy, Emily, Gina, Ben, Andy, Amanda and Paul; 16 great-grandchildren, along with many nieces and nephews.
Preceding Dorothy in death are her parents; husband, Ivan; son, Daniel; two daughters, Marie and Janet; two sisters, Jeanette and Eunice; and two brothers, Jerome and Earl.
Interment will be at Our Savior’s Cemetery.
