  1. 17.  Knud Madsson LAJORD Descendancy chart to this point (8.Mads3, 3.Thron2, 1.Mads1) was born on 26 Aug 1818 in Vang i Valdres, Oppland, Norway.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Baptism: 18 Oct 1818, Nord-Aurdal i Valdres, Oppland, Norway

    Notes:

Many from Kjörnes, a Nord-Aurdal farm, among his baptismal sponsors.

He was a husmand med jord on the Steesrud farm in Vang in the 1865 census. His son Knut, his youngest child in the census, is shown as age 3.

Steesrud or Steinsrud is a plass on Gåsdeilde 29/.

Vang A, p. 519-520, says he was called “Gunnhild-Knut.” Called Knut Madsson Ellingbø on p. 465 of Vang A.

Knud was a great hunter (var ein stor rjupeveidar) according to the bygdebok.

He and his family moved to the U.S. in 1866. Knud’s son Jon, b. 1853, became a pastor in the U.S.

    Birth:
Steesrud; Vang birth record seems to say August 20

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Baptism: 14 Jan 1827, Vang i Valdres, Oppland, Norway

    Notes:

In the 1900 census, she was Ingeborg Trontson, age 74, mistakenly shown as being born in December of 1825. She is living with her son, Thomas Trontson, age 35, born in Wisconsin, and his family in the town of Amherst, Portage County, Wisconsin.

In that census, she had had 4 children, of which 3 were still living.

It wouldn’t seem that she could have had a son Thomas, born in Wisconsin in 1865 or so if she was still in Norway for the 1865 census with, apparently, all of her children, none of whom was Thomas.

    Hurum

    Notes:

She is sometimes confused with her older sister who died before this Marit was born. That other Marit Evensdatter was born in October of 1834 and died in 1835.

The bygdebok calls her Marit Eivindsdotter Villand of N. Myre.

She was married to Eivind Jøgersson Austreim in Norway before she married Even Boe. In the 1900 census, Marith had had 9 children, 8 still living. Even had come to the U.S. in 1870 and Marith in 1868.

NELS IVERSON CALLED TO HIS MAKER, FRIDAY
Was First Settler in Martin Township; The First Home Was A Sod Cellar: Saw Many Hardships.
The Angel of Death made another visit to our community last week when it took from our midst, one of the earliest settlers in Martin Township, namely, Mr. Nels Iverson, who passed away on Friday afternoon, December 24th, at 2:45, at the advanced age of 81 years, 7 months, 26 days.
Mr. Iverson was born in Vang, Valders, Norway, April 28th 1846.He received common schooling in his native country and reaching manhood came alone to seek his fortune. After living for three years at Decorah, Iowa, he came to Minnesota, and worked for a time on a farm in Freeborn County.
To Mr. Iverson belongs the honor of being the first settler in Martin Township, coming here with his wife whose maiden name was Miss Rangde Olson Ellingboe and to whom he was united in marriage at St. Ansgar, Iowa, on July 16, 1868.
Mrs. Iverson made her home with John and Ole Steen for two weeks while her husband was building their first home in the west, a sod cellar. At the completion of the job the new home was given a real housewarming, as Mrs. Iverson came and moved in, and the same day Goodman Anderson, John Nelson, John Goldberg and Peter Skyberg came and spent the night with them.
This old homestead was filed on by Mr. Iverson on October 14, 1871, and the sod cellar was built in the spring of 1872.
This family was blest with twelve children, five preceding him in death.
The surviving children are Iver, Anna Jensen, Ole N. Mrs. John Larson, Mrs. Peter Severtson, Rudolph, and Mrs. Iver Wangeness, who together with their mother are left to mourn.
The direct cause of Mr. Iverson's death was a paralytic stroke, and old age, suffering his first stroke on December 13th.
Funeral services were held from the home at 1:00 on Tuesday afternoon and at Bethlehem Church at 2:00 O’clock, The Rev. Theo. Rodsater preaching both in the Norwegian and English languages. There was a big attendance of friends from far and near who had come to pay their last respects to one of our earliest settlers.
The Hills Glee club consisting of R. A. Johnson, J. M. Johnson, Andrew Rogness, Olaf Hagen, George Qualley, Arthur Rortvet, and Mrs. Olaf Hagen at the piano sang a beautiful song.
Grandpa Iverson was carried to his last resting place by six grandsons, Kenneth Iverson, Eugene Iverson, Lawrence Iverson, Earnest Iverson, Nels Jensen, and Arthur Anderson.
All the children were present at the funeral and relatives from a distance Mrs. Earls Charles of Omaha.
"Mr. Nels Iverson was an influential, good and kind man, and had held several offices of trust in the community, and will be missed by all who had the good fortune to know him."

From "THE HISTORY OF ROCK AND PIPESTONE COUNTIES", by Arthur P. Rose, published 1911, courtesy of Katherine:

NELS IVERSON (1846 - 1926) is one of Rock County's pioneers who suffered in the adverse times of the grasshopper scourge and other dire calamities of the early days, but he never lost hop and today enjoys the reward of persevering toil and has had many seasons of bountiful harvest.

He was born in Vang, Valders, Norway on April 28, 1845. His parents, Iver Olson and Anna (Myre) Sondral, were small farmers in the land of the Norse.

Mr. Iverson was educated in the common schools of his native country and in the first year of his manhood came alone to seek his fortune in the new world. A three years' residence in Decorah, Iowa was broken by an eight months' sojourn in the pineries of Wisconsin. He next came to Minnesota, the scene of his subsequent activities. He worked at farm labor in Freeborn County, was married there, and in 1871 joined the vanguard of Martin Township pioneers. He took as a homestead claim the southwest quarter of section 27, which has been his home from that day to this. Mr. Iverson was a faithful member of the township board for fourteen years and was a director of school district No. 6 for three years. He is a stockholder in the Farmers Mercantile Company of Hills, and in the co-operative creamery at that point. With his family he is a member of the Synod Norwegian Lutheran Church.

At St. Ansgar, Iowa, on July 16, 1868 Nels Iverson was married to Rangde Olson Ellingbo. She was born November 4, 1849, and is the daughter of Ole and Engebor (Anderson) Ellingbo, both deceased. To this union were born twelve children, including two pair of twins, and of the family seven are still living.

The family register gives the following record:
    Ingeborg, born May 23, 1869, died July 27, 1909

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Minnesota Death Certificate: 1917-MN-004721

    Notes:

Traci’s tree refers to him as Lars Kristofferson Soine.

“Alias Lars Christopherson.” That’s what he was called in the 1880 census.

In the 1885 state census, he was Lars O. Støine of Warsaw Twp, Goodhue County. The household consists of Lars, 55, Anna, 57, Tom, 24, Gertrude, 19, Berit, 16, Christina, 9, Martha 7, “T.A.”, 25, Anna Austin, 27, Mabel A., 3, and Anna Maria, 20. From this and other information we can infer that “Anna Austin” is Lars’s oldest daughter, T.A. is her husband, Tom Austinson, and Mabel A. is Maybel Amanda Ellingboe.

As Lars Christopherson Soine, he is listed as one of the initial contributors to the start-up of St. Olaf College.

He was a farmer in Warsaw Twp in 1870.

in the 1900 census, Lars, Anna, and their single daughter Christina were living in Warsaw, Goodhue County, next door to their son and brother, Thomas Soine and his family. Lars is shown to have come to this country in 1853, Anna in 1856.

In the 1910 census, Lars and Anne are living with their son Tom and his family on Tom’s farm in Warsaw.

He is listed in “The Valdris Book”, a history of the Valdris Samband published in 1920 (available on Google Books) but his entry specifically says he was not a member of the Samband.

Shown as Lars A. on his death certificate.

From one of Lars’s descendants: "Lars Christophersen Soine was born on 14 June 1830 in Vang, Valdres Norway. He came to America with his parents in 1853, he was 23 years old. He went by the name Lars O Christophersen. He worked in the logging camps in Wisconsin. He rode the logs down the river to keep them from jumbling. Several times he was thrown, by the force of the swift current and the jerking logs, into the water. In 1856 he married Anna Ellestad. Three of their nine children were born in Wisconsin. In the early 1860's Lars and Anna went moved to Goodhue County in Minnesota where they rented a farm for a few years. Then they purchased 160 acres in Warsaw township in Goodhue County. At this time he returned to using the name Lars Soine. Lars and Anna lived in a small house on their land until 1884 when they built a 12 room house for two families. He planned this house for two families so that he would have a place of his own in their old age. Lars and Anna lived in four rooms, tworooms downstairs (12x14 and 14x16) and two rooms upstairs. Their son, Thomas, and his family of 12 lived in seven of the rooms, four big rooms downstairs and three upstairs. The room above the kitchen was used as a store room for both families. Both families used the same stairs and hallway to the second floor. Each family had their own cellar and stairs. The pump was on the porch between the two kitchens. (Don't you think many oldfolks would love this arrangement nowadays instead of the old folks home?) (Denne ideen hare nok Lars hatt med segfra Vang, han har nok tenkt på kårstuene der, da han bygde detstore huset.) These two families lived in Harmony for 24½ years. In 1916 Anna and Lars celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. Anna died that fall at the age of 83 and Lars died the following April, 1917." (This is a transcript of a handwritten remembrance of one of Lars O Soine's grandchildren). Lars was a 'charter member' of the 'Valdres Laget' of Goodhue county.

Lars married Anna Tomasdatter ELLESTAD about 1856. Anna (daughter of Tomas Knudson TØRSTAD and Berit Johannesdatter ELLESTAD) was born on 4 Sep 1833 in Lomen, Vestre Slidre i Valdres, Oppland, Norway; died on 6 Nov 1916 in Goodhue County, Minnesota; was buried in Vang Lutheran Church Cemetery, Dennison, Goodhue County, Minnesota. Greg Fearon says that, “soon after arriving in the U.S. with her parents and family, she died of diptheria in Michigan in 1853.”

  23. 39.  Sigurd Kristofferson (Syver C) SOINE Descendancy chart to this point (16.Anne3, 5.Anne2, 1.Mads1) was born on 26 Oct 1842 in Vang i Valdres, Oppland, Norway; died on 11 Jul 1874 in Wang Twp, Renville County, Minnesota.

    Notes:

    Born in Søyne 50/, øvre.

He came to America with his family in 1853. He was 12 years old when his parents died. Syver was taken in by an English family, where he learned to speak English, and he eventually forgot Norwegian. He joined the Union Army on August 22, 1862; he was 20 years old. He was in Company D of the 10th Regiment of the Minnesota Volunteers. He fought at Gettysburgh with Gen. Sherman on his march to the sea. Syver enlisted under the name of Chrstopherson. After the war Lars, Syver, and Ole reunited in Goodhue County and there Syver met and married Sonneva Ellingboe in 1867. They had 3 sons. They moved to Wang township in Renville County. Syver was killed by a runaway, while haying in July 1874, and he is buried in a Wang cemetery.

The Union Army was recruiting in Minnesota in the summer of 1862 when Sever Christopherson enlisted as a private in the 10th Minn. Volunteers from Warsaw, Rice Co. The Regiment, under Col. James H. Baker, had orders to travel to New York and then to the Gulf via steamer; but before recruitment was complete the Sioux Indians in western Minnesota began misbehaving and the Regiment was sent to bolster other troops fighting around New Um, Nicollet Co. The captured Indians were sent to Mankato army post where they were courtmartialed and executed in February of 1863.

The winter of 1862/1863, the Regiment spent doing guard duty on the frontier, building stockades, and training. In camp at Henderson until February when they were ordered to Mankato to participate in the execution of the Sioux Indians.

In the summer of 1863, the 10th Minn., and other regiments took the offensive against the Indians, beat them up, and chased them across the Missouri River. On both campaigns Sever marched through the area where he would later homestead (in Renville County), but which was an Indian land in 1863 and 1863.

On the 18th of September 1863, orders arrived at Ft. Snelling, which was the main army post in the Minn. District (old Ft. Snelling is located across the river from Minneapolis and south of St. Paul) for the 10th to report to St. Louis, Mo. And they traveled by boat to Dunleith, by rail to St. Louis. There the Regiment did garrison and provost duty as there were several military prisons for prisoners of war, for "stragglers" (a euphemism for deserters who got caught), 5 forts and many supply warehouses. It was at St. Louis that Col. Phelps resigned and Capt. C.L. Davis took command of Co. D.

On April 22, 1864, the 10th Minn. left for Columbus, Kentucky, and on June 19, 1864 they were sent to Memphis, Tenn. On July 13, 1864 the Rebels attacked them at Tupelo Hill, under Gen. Bedford Forrest who was protecting Gen. Hood's withdrawal. Gen. Forrest withdrew in an orderly fashion and the 10th pressed after him. Through the fall, the unit had several skirmishes in pursuit and harassment of the Rebels.

On Dec. 15 and 16, 1864, the 10th and other units assaulted Gen. Hood's earthworks and the last battle of Nashville ensued. After taking casualties, the 10th succeeded in driving out an exhausted Confederate Army. The 10th had the task of pressing on Hood's rear, which sent them up against their old foe, Gen. Bedford Forrest. The 10th pushed on to Mobile Bay participating in the battle at Spanish Fort.

The war was over and the 10th returned to Ft. Snelling via river steamer and were formally mustered out of the Union Army on August 19, 1865.

That's what Sever's unit was doing from 1862 to 1865, but what Sever was doing is another matter. His war records show that he was present at all of the Indian Wars, and that he went south from Ft. Snelling to St. Louis. However, his records show that in May of 1864 he was in the Post Hospital in Columbus, Ky. because of sickness, not specified. Half the the casualties in the Civil War died of illnesses such as typhoid smallpox, dysentery, and just plain old pneumonia. His records say he was ill through the fall of 1864/1865, and that he was forwarded to Ft. Snelling the middle of Aug. 1864 and was ill until Oct. 20th when he resumed his duties at Ft. Snelling.

His papers say that Sever was 20 years old when he enlisted, that he was 5 ft, 9 inches, his eyes- gray, his hair and complexion -light. Sever Christopherson appears on the official roster of Company D.

Althon; the children are: Anna, Betsey, Christopher, Torger, Mary and Gertdane.

He is I11520 in Jim’s VS.

    Jim’s notes:

He was 10 years old when his parents died.

Candice Soine skriver: "Ole hired out to a very rough and unkind woodcutter. If he could not meet the quota for the day, he was not permitted to have supper. When he was 13 years old he cut his finger with an axe while he was chopping wood. It was cut so badly that only a small portion of flesh kept it from falling off. He put the two ends together as best he could, and bandaged the finger with strips of cloth. He did all of the aftercare himself and eventually, the cut healed and his finger remained stiff and crooked, but somewhat useful. Ole went from Michigan to Dane County in Wisconsin and was there from 1857-1869. Then he went to Iowa until 1862 and finally to Goodhue County in Minnesota in 1862. Ole enlisted in the Union Army at the age of 19 on December 12, 1863 and was mustered out on December 2, 1865. On January 15, 1869 Ole married Gertrude (Gjertrud) Elton and they had eight children.
