    Charles B. Simonson, 82, of Grand Meadow, died Monday, Nov. 15, 2004, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester.

    Charles was born on Sept. 6, 1922, in rural Grand Meadow. He attended Grand Meadow School, then joined the Army during World War II serving in the Pacific Theatre. After the war Charles returned to Grand Meadow and on Nov. 14, 1948, he married Norma Jean Lamp in Grand Meadow. They raised children.

    Chuck worked in the Grand Meadow area throughout his life, most recently for the Osmundson Bros. of Adams. He loved to work and he greatly enjoyed the men that he worked with. He loved the Grand Meadow area, always referring to it as "God's Country."

    He was always friendly and outgoing, he loved to talk to people and always greeted them with a smile. His greatest joy in life was being a grandfather.

    Charles is survived by his wife Norma, Grand Meadow; four children: Deborah Betts, Milwaukee, Wis.; Scott (Debbie) Simonson, Waseca, Minn.; Holly (Dawn) Simonson, Blandon, Pa.; and Thomas Simonson, Big Bend, Wis.; eight grandchildren; one brother: Curtis (Trudie) Simonson, Spring Valley; and one sister: Vernice (Phil) Stier, Grand Meadow.

    He was preceded in death by his parents, son-in-law Ray and brother Everette.

    Memorial services will be at 1 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 18, 2004, at the Bear Creek Lutheran Church in Frankford Township, Mower County, with the Rev. David Simerson officiating. Burial will be at the Bear Creek Lutheran Cemetery.

    Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2004, at the Hindt Funeral Home in Grand Meadow and one hour prior to the service at the church.

    Vernice I. Stier, age 95, of Grand Meadow died Friday July 10, 2020 at her home in Grand Meadow.

    She was born January 31, 1925 to Clarence and Bertha (Skogstad) Simonson on a farm near Grand Meadow. She attended and graduated from Grand Meadow High School in 1944 and was united in marriage to Phillip Stier on September 26, 1945 at St Finbarr Catholic Church in Grand Meadow and together they had 9 children. Vernice was a homemaker for the majority of her life, at age 60 she started working at Grand Meadow Health Care and continued to work there for 10 years. After her retirement from the Care Center Vernice and Phillip enjoyed wintering in Mesa, AZ for many years.  She enjoyed bowling, music, dancing, cocktail hour with a brandy old fashioned, playing pinochle and driving her golf cart around Grand Meadow but most of all she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and having a good time.

    She is survived by her children; Annette (Pat) Hefling of Tomahawk, WI, Mark (Theresa) Stier of Grand Meadow, Connie (Frank) Mignone of Hamel, MN, Terry (Lisa) Stier of Montgomery, MN, Less (Chery) Stier of Grand Meadow, Pam (Craig) Stacey of Deephaven, MN, Patti Stier of Burnsville, MN and Jim (Randi) Stier of Grand Meadow, 28 grandchildren, 59 great-grandchildren and a great-great grandson.

    She was preceded in death by her husband Phillip on October 24, 2006, a son Stephen, a grandson Brandon and 3 brothers; Everett, Chuck and Curt.

    A public visitation will be held from 10 A.M. until 11 A.M. on Friday July 17, 2020 at St Finbarr Catholic Church. St Finbarr Catholic Church requests masks be worn and social distancing be followed.  A private funeral Mass for the family will take place later that day.

    The family would like to extend a special thank you to her niece Julie Burgess for the loving care she extended to Vernice over the last couple years.

    The funeral for Curtis L. Simonson will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Spring Valley, with the Revs. Dennis Timmerman and Laura Fladten officiating. Burial will be in Bear Creek Cemetery in rural Grand Meadow.

    Mr. Simonson, 78, of Spring Valley, died Saturday (Jan. 31, 2009) at the Grand Meadow Health Care Center, where he had resided for several months.

    He was born July 12, 1930, in Grand Meadow, where he grew up and attended school. He entered the Army in 1951 and was discharged in 1954. On April 5, 1952, he married Tudie Riess at the Grand Meadow Lutheran Church.

    Mr. Simonson was employed by Ruan Transport for 36 years, retiring in 1990. He enjoyed woodworking, hunting and fishing, and dancing.

    He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Anne Marie (Leland) Kappers of Spring Valley; and a sister, Vernice Stier of Grand Meadow. Other survivors include two grandchildren, Riley Simonson and Ashley Kappers. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Bertha (Skogstad) Simonson; and two brothers, Everett and Charles.

    Friends may call from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service Tuesday at the church.

    The family prefers memorials to the Bear Creek Cemetery Association or Our Savior's Lutheran Church.

    Dolores Skogstad was born Oct. 8, 1924, in rural Grand Meadow, near Bear Creek. She attended rural elementary schools and graduated from Grand Meadow High School in 1943. While going to school, she worked at the telephone office in Grand Meadow. Following graduation, she worked at Nashold's Cafe and Waters Conley in Rochester. On Sept. 13, 1946, she married Edwin Guy, and they farmed in the Grand Meadow area for several years. After moving to Grand Meadow, her husband worked as a mechanic and she was a homemaker rearing 10 children. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, reading, flowers and plants.

    Survivors include her children, James Olson of Grand Meadow, Gary (Jeanie) Guy of Spring Valley, David Guy of Stewartville, Steven (Sharon) Guy of Elkton, Richard (Chris) Guy, Donna Guy, Patrick Guy, Michael Guy and Sherrie Scrabeck (Kevin Queensland), all of Grand Meadow, and Deanna Guy of McIntire, Iowa; 16 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1983.

    Friends may call from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Hindt Funeral Home in Grand Meadow, and an hour before the service Tuesday at the church.

    Gordon Ellsworth Sween, age 88, of Grand Meadow, MN, passed away on Friday, April 5, 2013, at Grand Meadow Healthcare Center.Gordon was born on September 1, 1924, to Clifford and Evelyn (Skogstad) Sween in Racine Township. He grew up in rural Grand Meadow. Gordon was a member of Bear Creek Lutheran Church his entire life.

    On August 14, 1955, Gordon married Betty Lou Meschke.

    Throughout his life, Gordon worked as a farm laborer and at the Grand Meadow Locker. He eventually went to work for the grain elevator in Grand Meadow, until his retirement in 1986, after 27 years. Gordon was a member of the Grand Meadow Volunteer Fire Department for many years. He enjoyed camping with friends and spending time with his family and grandchildren.

    Gordon is survived by his wife, Betty of Grand Meadow, daughter, Crystal (Tom) Olson of Byron, MN, grandchildren, Sara and Eric Olson of Byron, MN, and his brother, Norman (Kitty) Sween of Grand Meadow.He was preceded in death by his parents.

    Norman Sween, 94, of Grand Meadow, MN, died on Sunday, February 13, 2022 at his home.

    Norm was born on August 6, 1927, in Grand Meadow, MN to Clifford and Evelyn (Skogstad) Sween.

    Norm attended country school in the Bear Creek area and graduated from Grand Meadow High School in 1945. Like many of his classmates, Norm volunteered for the service, leaving high school two months before graduation.

    He chose the Navy which trained him to be a medic/corpsman. The Navy sent him to Great Lakes, San Diego, and Baltimore for that training. Luckily, the war ended before he was shipped overseas.

    On July 26, 1947, he married Kathleen "Kitty" Stier, his high school sweetheart, and they started the love story that would span 69 years. They began their married life in Great Lakes, IL, where Norm was stationed, later returning to Grand Meadow.

    Norm worked for many years as manager of the Home Telephone Company of Grand Meadow, Racine, and Wykoff, and later Pierce Telephone in Riceville, IA.

    He was active in the Minnesota Independent Telephone Association and kept close contact with telephone friends from southern Minnesota.

    Norm took great pride in his hometown and was part of the Grand Meadow Booster Club and the Grand Meadow Development Corporation where Norm helped with the annual chicken barbecue at Meadow Fest and working on getting new businesses in town. Norm saw the need to keep Grand Meadow vibrant. Norm was active in Boy Scouts, serving as Cub Master. He and Kitty volunteered for Meals on Wheels and a St. Finbarr's Catholic Church.

    While still enlisted in the Navy, Norm became a member of the Harry T. Anderson Post #140 and was a valued member for 75 years. Until just recently, Norm would be graveside at military funerals, honoring our service men and women.

    He was preceded in death by his parents, son Paul T. Sween, daughter-in-law Joan Sween, brother Gordon Sween, brothers-in-law Richard Stier, Jerry Stier, Adrian Stier, Dave Christian, and a sister-in-law Dale Stier.

    Norman married Kathleen Therese STIER on 26 Jul 1947 in Mower County, Minnesota. Kathleen was born on 29 Jul 1927 in Grand Meadow, Mower County, Minnesota; died on 4 Sep 2016 in Grand Meadow, Mower County, Minnesota; was buried in Saint Finbarrs Cemetery, Grand Meadow, Mower County, Minnesota.     Funeral services Eugene Jacobson will be held 11:00 A.M. Thursday, June 11, 2015 at Bear Creek Lutheran Church in rural Grand Meadow, MN with Pastor Larry Iverson officiating. Burial will take place in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held 4:00-7:00 P.M. Wednesday, June 10, 2015 at the Hindt Funeral Home in Grand Meadow, MN and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church.

    Eugene “Gene” Hershel Jacobson 84 of Grand Meadow, MN passed away Monday June 8, 2015 surrounded by his loving family.  

    He was born July 21, 1930 to Ada and Reno Jacobson and graduated from Grand Meadow High School. He later married Darlene (Nelson) on November 12, 1950 and moved to the family farm where he lived his entire life. He was always a farmer at heart and never felt the need to ever retire from farming; though he had a brief position working for the State of MN. He was proud to say that was his only “off the farm job”. Gene loved farming, coffee with his friends at Lake GEO, spending time with his family and playing cards with his grandchildren.

    He is survived by his wife Darlene of 64 years, and children Sandra (Earl) Reiland of Hopkins, MN, Les (Ginny) Jacobson of Rochester, Randy Jacobson of Grand Meadow, Tim (Karen) Jacobson of Eagan, Karen (Rory) Ballweber of Eagan, Denise (Eric) Clement of Cresco, Iowa.  Gene had eight grandchildren; Justin, Leah, Emily, Jessica, Derek, Kjirsten, Neil, Emma, and three step-grandchildren; Don, Wendy and Paul. In addition he also enjoyed the company of his 4 great grandchildren. Eugene is also survived by his sister Joan (Milo) Roe of LeRoy, MN.

    He was preceded in death by his parents Ada and Reno along with his daughter Renae who died in 1968.

    Notes:

    He and two friends and their high school agriculture teacher died in Canada while on a “five-day graduation camping trip” in the Boundary Waters. Their canoe tipped over in Saganaga Lake and he died of drowning and hypothermia. All four wore life jackets and all were considered good swimmers.

    Paul T. Sween, 59, of Chino Valley, Ariz. and formerly of Grand Meadow died Oct. 2, 2009 in Phoenix, Ariz. following a brief illness.

    He was born Oct. 8, 1949 to Norm and Kitty Sween and graduated from Grand Meadow High School in 1967. He continued his education at the University of Minnesota, graduating in 1972.

    From a young age Paul loved horses and often worked in careers involving animals. He had lived and worked in Florida, Minnesota and Arizona.

    In addition to his many friends he is survived by his parents, Norm and Kitty Sween of Grand Meadow; brothers, Dan (Carolyn) Sween of Grand Meadow and Doug (Joan) Sween of Rochester; a sister Cindy (Doug) Ofstedal of Tokyo, Japan/Harmony, Minn. He is also survived by three nephews, Patrick, Charlie, and Brit; and three nieces, Sarah, Adrienne and Sheldyn.
