In the 1900 census, she was Lizzie Zimkoski, a 37 year-old widow living with her children in Franklin Twp, Wright County, Minnesota. She had no occupation. She had had 7 children, 6 still alive and all were living with her.

In the 1920 and 1940 censuses, she was Elizabeth Zimkoski, a 57 year-old widow living in Delano with her 24 year-old son Fred. In the 1940 census, she is shown as having been educated through the first grade.

Elizabeth married Anthony ZIMKOSKI on 9 Nov 1884 in Hennepin County, Minnesota. Anthony died before 1900. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

He registered for the draft in Yellow Medicine County on September 12, 1918. He was a telegrapher for the Great Northern Railroad in Granite Falls. He and Rose lived in Granite Falls. He was tall and of medium build with blue eyes and brown hair.

In the 1920 and 1930 censuses, he and his wife and daughter lived in Granite Falls where he was a depot agent.

Family/Spouse: Rose May. Rose was born on 8 Jun 1888 in South Dakota; died on 24 Jul 1960 in Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota; was buried in Granite Falls City Cemetery, Granite Falls, Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

He registered for the draft on June 5, 1917, in Spokane. He was a lineman for an electric company. He was married and lived at 126-1/2 Second in Spokane. He was tall and of medium build with blue eyes and light brown hair.

In the 1930 census, he and his wife lived in Ventura, California. She was a nurse, he was a lineman for an electric company.

In the 1940 census, he and his wife lived in Los Angeles where he was an electrician for the bureau of power and light.

John married Eleanor C about 1924. Eleanor was born about 1897 in New York. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Notes:

He registered for the draft in Flathead County, Montana, on June 5, 1917. He lived in Swan Lake, Montana, where he was a laborer for a lumber company. He was married. He was of medium height and build with dark blue eyes and dark brown hair.

In the 1920 census, he may be the Joe Zimkaski, age 27 or 37, living in Spokane with his wife Vergie and his step-son, 7 year-old Raymond Brown. Vergie is unable to read or write. Joe’s and Vergie’s places of birth, and the places of birth of their parents, are unknown. Joe is a logger in a logging camp.

He is probably the Joseph Zimkoski buried in Greenwood Memorial Terrace cemetery in Spokane, plot Lawn-18, Section 20, #49. That Joseph died in 1929. His record in Find A Grave shows he was born in 1839 but that is probably a transcribing error from 1893.

A Virginia Zimkoski, b. 2 Sep 1892, died May 1971 in Seattle.

Notes:

He was a carpenter for the Great Northern when he registered for the draft in 1917 in Delano.

It would be something of a miracle if Fred’s birth date was correct and his brother Charles’s birth date was also correct.

In the 1940 census, he is age 44, single, and living with his mother in Delano in Wright County, Minnesota. He has no occupation and is shown as unemployable.

Notes:

His birth date is shown as December 2, 1895, in enough places that we’ll have to assume that it is correct even though December of 1895 would have been pretty much impossible if his older brother was born at the end of March in 1895.

He registered for the draft in Abercrombie Twp, Richland County, North Dakota, on June 5, 1917. He was single and was a railroad relief agent for the Great Northern. He was tall and of medium build with blue eyes and light brown hair.

He served in the U.S. Army in World War I. He was inducted at Wahpeton on June 23, 1918; sent to Camp Dodge, Iowa; served in Company C, 313th Engineers, to discharge; overseas from Aug. 16, 1918, to June 6, 1919. Engagement: Defensive Sector: Center (Alsace). Discharged at Camp Dodge, Iowa, on June 16, 1919, as a Private.

In the 1930 census, he and Olga lived in Bremen Twp, Wells County, North Dakota. They had no children. He was an agent-superintendent at the railroad depot.

They were still in Bremen Twp in the 1940 census although he is mistakenly indexed as Kimkoski in Ancestry.com.

The Charles Lawrence Zimkoski who was born 2 Dec 1895 applied for a Social Security number in April of 1937.

Charles lived with Olga in Minot, North Dakota, between 1951 and 1960. He was an agent for the Great Northern.

Charles married Olga E about 1922. Olga was born on 29 Jan 1894 in Illinois; died on 25 Sep 1965 in Washington; was buried in New Tacoma Cemetery, Pierce County, Washington. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Notes:

In the 1940 census, she is Alene Johnson, age 29, wife of J Harold Johnson, age 31. They have no children and live in Granite Falls where J Harold is the proprietor of a flour mill. Alene has one year of college, Harold has three years of high school.

Allene married J Harold JOHNSON on 20 Jun 1937 in Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota. J was born about 1909 in Minnesota. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
