  1. 1.  August ENGEL was born in Jun 1842 in Germany (Prussia); died on 16 Mar 1916 in Pepin County, Wisconsin; was buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Pepin, Pepin County, Wisconsin.

    Notes:

The family name was spelled in the 1860 census as Engle, in the 1870 census as Ingles, in the 1880 census as Engel, and in the 1900 census as Engle.

His son William’s obit referred to August’s farm as “on Big Hill.”

In the 1895 state census, he is August Engel. His household consists of 6 males and 2 females, 7 of whom were born in the U.S. and 1 in Germany. This suggests that Sarah may have died by 1895 and that one of the girls was not living at home.

According to the 1900 census he came to the U.S. in 1854.

August Engel, 63, retired farmer, and Anna, 49, are living in the village of Pepin at the time of the 1905 state census.

In the 1910 census, he lives in Pepin County. Living with him are the widow Lousia Anderson, housekeeper, age 24, and her two children, Vernon H., 2, and Elma E., eight months. (She may be the Mrs. Lucy Anderson who was a witness to August’s will. She later filed a claim against the estate and was awarded $600.)

The probate of his estate was initiated by his son William, as executor, in March of 1916. That proceeding was completed on 25 March 1918 in Pepin.

August’s real estate at the time of his death was described in the probate documents as follows:

SW ¼ of NW ¼ of Sec 3 of Town 23 Range 14, 40 acres, valued at $2800.
    W ½ of SE ¼ of SW ¼ of Section 34 of Town 24 Range 14, 20 acres valued at $300.
SE ¼ of SW ¼ of Section 4 of Town 23 Range 14, 40 acres valued at $375.
SW ¼ of SE ¼ of Section 4 of Town 23 Range 14, 40 acres valued at $1525.
South end of Lot no. 6, Section 22, Town 23 Range 14, 22 acres valued at $150.
Lots 9, 10, and 11 of Block 8, Village of Pepin, valued at $1800.
Lot 1 of Block 8, Village of Pepin, valued at $75.
SW corner of SE ¼ of NE ¼ of NW ¼ of Section 25, Town 23 Range 15, illegible but perhaps valued at $600.

August’s estate also contained a note from Schruth Brothers, 1915, valued at $250 and one horse valued at $150.

Kenneth Howard, who makes his home in Ashland when not working at his father’s little sawmill 16 miles from the Pacific Highway on the Dead Indian road, was killed while returning Miss Beatrice Mansfield to her home at the Knox camp in Jacksonville. Howard was driving his light roadster toward Jacksonville on West Main street at what police believe must have been a fast pace. At the Columbus avenue intersection the right wheels of the roadster hit the two deep declevities mad by cars turning onto the dirt-surfaced Columbus street. The car evidently bounce into the air and came down skidding, slanting to the left across the highway. It skidded to the far side of the pavement, hit the gutter and leaped into the air according to reconstructed evidence. It landed on its radiator, leaving the radiator cap buried in the earth, leaped on over in a high arc to form a complete forward somersault, and landed on its side, rolling over four or five times before coming to rest about 75 feet from the start of the skid. Howard was killed instantly, the entire lower half of his skull crushed by some blow, and the left chest crushed and the ribs broken. His body was thrown clear on the last turn that the car made and was found 10 feet from the machine. Miss Mansfield was also thrown from the gyrating auto and was found unconscious a few feet from Howard’s body. The girl was rushed to a local hospital where her condition was pronounced not serious. She received a gash over both eyes and painful bruises but returned to her home in Jacksonville early Sunday morning. Police found two bottles of wine at the scene, one a fifth full in the torn wreckage of the car and one a fifth empty lying in the dirt near the scene. There were no witnesses to the crash.

A child during the Depression, Evelyn told of how poor she and her mother were, once having only 34 cents to their name. While serving as a U.S.O. hostess during World War II, she met her future husband, Arthur, at a dance at Truax Field, and they were married Aug. 18, 1943. They enjoyed 62 years together. She taught Sunday school, sang in the choir, played hand bells, directed the Sunday school Christmas pageant at a time when more than 500 children were involved, was queen of the kitchen, active in her women's circle, and served as secretary of the church council. Her strong faith was a witness to many. Evelyn was a long-time volunteer at Meriter Hospital. She and Arthur loved dogs and operated a doggy day-care for many years. When they moved to Oakwood West she found ways to get involved there, including participating in a writers group. Evelyn was a caring and loving person, often opening her home to others who would otherwise be spending holidays alone. She made friends everywhere she went. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. Evelyn is survived by two daughters, Mary (Lee) Powell of Madison and the Rev. Marsha Swenson of Reedsburg; four grandchildren, Andrew (Anisa), Angela, Karen, and Kathryn (Scott); six great-grandchildren, Shamsa, Amani, Maryam, Nusaybah, Jeremy, and Teagan; her sister, Lorraine Brocks; and many wonderful friends.
