    Helen E. Smith, 78, of Baxter, died Jan. 15, 2013, at Essentia Health-St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Brainerd. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 21, 2013, at Lord of Life Lutheran Church in Baxter with Lilja Behr officiating. Family and friends are invited to gather one hour prior. Interment at Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery near Camp Ripley.

    Memorials preferred to Lord of Life Lutheran Church in Baxter or the Diabetic Resource Center at Essentia Health–St. Joseph’s Medical Center (524 North St., Brainerd, MN 56401).

    Helen was born Feb. 16, 1934 and grew up in Aitkin, Minn. She graduated from Aitkin High School. On a blind date she met her sweetheart Max Smith and fell in love. They were married in 1954 and started their family in Plymouth. After raising four children, Helen worked for Nortronics and as an apartment manager in Maple Grove. After retiring Helen and Max moved North to Sugar Lake, Minn., and wintered in St. Augustine, Fla. In 2004, they moved to Baxter to be closer to family. All along the way she established life-long friendships. Helen was always a happy person and cherished her family and friends; she shared her love by baking and cooking for them often. She also enjoyed painting.

    Helen is survived by sister, Edna (Bill) Everson, of Baxter; children, Larry (Cindy), Greg (Laura), Jeff (Myrtice), and Barb (Scott); grandchildren, Blair, Kelby, Jamie, DevonLee, Ashley, Chelsey, and Gabrielle; and great-grandchildren, Emma and Shayla. Helen was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Max; parents, Edwin and Elizabeth Wendt; and her sister, Hazel Anderson.
