There were two Randi Ellingbös born in Vang in the 1869-1870 period. One was the legitimate daughter (#4059) of Tollef Oleson Ellingbö and Marit Jøgersdatter. The other was this Randi, the illegitimate daughter of Iver Knutsson Ellingbö and Randi Olsdatter Ellingbö. Randi Iversdatter Ellingbö left Vang on 4 September 1889 for “St. Paul.” A Ragdi J. Ellingboe, spinster, age 19, arrived in New York on September 27, 1889, aboard the S.S. Britannic.

In the 1910 census, she and Thorsten and family were in Hickory Twp, Pennington County (formerly Red Lake County) in Minnesota. At that time, Rande had had 10 children, 8 still living, and 7 of whom (Thorsten A, Olaf, Maria, Hannah, Harald, Ruth, and Rudolph) were still living with her and Thorsten. Rande came to the U.S. in 1889.

A land ownership map from 1911 shows that the Kvale farm in Hickory Twp was 160 acres, the southeast quarter of Section 17.

They were still there in 1920. Rande came to the U.S. in 1889.

In the 1930 census, Randi and Thorsten Kvale were living in south Minneapolis (5344 30th Avenue South, near Lake Nokomis) with their daughters Ragna O, 18, and Agnes V., 16. Thorsten is a cabinet-maker with a sash and door firm.

In the 1940 census, Randi and Thorstein lived in Inglewood City, California, in a house that they owned. Thorstein had been a carpenter for a cabinet manufacturing company. At the time of the census, he was no longer employed and was considered retired. The couple had lived in Los Angeles in 1935. Each had a sixth-grade education.

She died in Paradise, California, where she had lived for 7 years. Her obit (Chico Enterprise-Record, 6 Apr 1956) mentioned a surviving brother Ole Ellingboe of Minnesota. She and her family may not have known that Ole had died many years earlier.

Rande married Thorsten KVÅLE on 14 Mar 1891 in Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota. Thorsten (son of Tosten Helgesson QVALE and Berit Gulbrandsdatter ØYLO) was born on 11 Jan 1867 in Vang i Valdres, Oppland, Norway; died on 4 Jun 1946 in Los Angeles County, California; was buried in Inglewood Park Cemetery, Los Angeles County, California. In the 1919 Seattle city directory, as Thorsten A Kvale, he and Bertha live at 3959 Holden. He is a carpenter.

He is not living with his parents in Hickory Twp, Red Lake/Pennington County in the 1920 census. He was in Seattle when his son was born and was living in Menomonie, Wisconsin, when his son died.

In the 1930 census he was Thorstein Kvale. He and his family lived at 1715 Raynor in Joliet Twp, Will County, Illinois. His occupation was building estimator.

In the 1940 census, he and his wife, their two daughters, and his mother-in-law lived in Los Angeles. He was a contractor in building construction. Everyone in the household had lived in Joliet, Illinois, five years earlier.

On June 7, 1956, he and his wife Frances, b. 3 Apr 1908, arrived in Southampton, England, aboard the S.S. Liberte for a 10 day visit. He is shown as a contractor, she as a housewife. She is a U.S. citizen, he is shown as “stateless.” They arrived back in New York on 10 Aug 1956, aboard the S.S. Ile de France, having saled from Le Havre on August 3rd. Their address was 728 W Windsor Avenue in Phoenix.

He and Frances are included in the 1956 and 1957 Phoenix city directories as living at the 728 W Windsor address. His business in the Kvale Building and Engineering Construction. In the 1957 directory, he is a building and construction engineer for the U.S. government.

She is 12 year-old Bertha in the 1905 Minnesota state census.

In the 1920 census, she and her husband live in Bricelyn in Faribault County, Minnesota. They have no children. Living with the couple were Bertha’s two sisters, Hannah and Marie.

In the 1930 census, she and her husband and their two daughters live in Bricelyn.

In the 1940 census, she and her (apparently still) husband live in Bricelyn. Their two daughters are listed but shown as absent, presumably away at college. Bertha has an eighth grade education. She and her husband are listed as separate households.

Hjalmar (son of Edward SYBILRUD and Randi BURTNESS) was born on 29 Jan 1894 in Waseca County, Minnesota; died on 2 Oct 1976 in Hidalgo County, Texas; was buried in Roselawn Cemetery, McAllen, Hidalgo County, Texas. Ragna is buried on private land in Hickory Twp, Pennington County, Minnesota. The exact location is in a farm field in a small copse about 1200 feet west of 380th Avenue SE and about 4000 feet south of 120th Street SE. Ragna’s grave is marked by a relatively modern steel marker. See photos.

Ragna died from “stomach complications” at the age of 12 years, 10 months and 20 days. The death certificate did not say where she would be buried. Her brother’s death certificate said “Trail, Minnesota.”

Living with her parents in Hickory Twp, Red Lake/Pennington County in the 1920 census. She is a nurse in a hospital. In that census, she was also recorded as a nurse living with her sister Bertha Sybilrud, wife of Hjalmar Sybilrud, in Bricelyn, Minnesota. Also living in that Bricelyn household was Bertha’s and Marie’s sister Hannah.

In the 1930 census, she and her husband live at 5337 30th Avenue, across the street from her parents in south Minneapolis. Lowell was a bookkeeper for a steam railroad. They had no children.

In January of 1936, she was Mrs. Marie Leffingwell of Minneapolis.

She is the Marie S. Wessling who died in California in 2001.

Beautiful Kay von Husen passed from our earth to God's kingdom on March 16, 2010, surrounded by her family, daughter Kavie, son Charles, sister Anne Major, nephew Jeff, niece Winnie and friends Dottie and Julie.

Katherine Louise was born in Joliet, Illinois, Oct. 19, 1928, to her parents T.A. and Bertha Kvale. She moved with her family to Ojai, California in 1936. Kay married John von Husen in 1957 and raised her two children in Marin County. Her dogs were with her always, enjoying the spoils of living with a true animal lover. She had many friends, always opening her doors to neighbors and family. She was a caregiver to all who entered her life, lavishing them with good conversation, laughter and meals. Kay's dream of living in Incline came in 1989. She rarely left her beloved Tahoe, for this was her home in her soul. Kay is survived by her two children, 4 grandchildren, her sister, her dog Bear, numerous nieces and nephews, as well many wonderful friends. She will be missed more than she could ever imagine. Donations can be made to the Pet Network in North Tahoe.
