  1. 1.  Karsten Henrik (Charles) HENDRICKSONKarsten Henrik (Charles) HENDRICKSON was born on 22 May 1855 in Stensoya (Stone Island), Rørvik, Østfold, Norway; was christened in Lækø, Leka, Nord-Trøndelag, Norway; died on 6 Sep 1935 in Hennepin County, Minnesota; was buried on 9 Sep 1935 in Crystal Lake Cemetery, Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Minnesota Death Certificate: 1935-MN-021371
    • Occupation: Machinist, stationary engineer

    Notes:

Emigrated from Norway in 1872 and first settled in Wisconsin. Sometime between 1872 and 1880 he had moved to Minneapolis where he married Mari Eriksen, who may have lived in Wisconsin also.

Charles was born to Henrik Hansen and Anna Christine Sendresen on an island close to Rorvik, Norway called Stone Island or Stensoya in a group of islands called Risvaersund.  Karsten Henrik Henriksen came to the U.S. in 1872 and first settled in Wisconsin. Sometime between 1872 and 1880 he had moved to Minneapolis where he married Mari Eirksen, who may have lived in Wisconsin also.

Charles was a machinist for the Butler Manufacturing Co. for many years until 1922. In 1922, he joined his son Edgar in the Twin City Chandelier Manufacturing Co. In 1923-1925, and perhaps beyond, Charles was a fireman for the Strutwear Knitting Co.

Charles’s address at the time of the 1890-91 Minneapolis city directory was 2630 13th Avenue South. His occupation was fireman at Washburn C Mill.

In the 1885 Minnesota state census, he is Charley Hendrickson living in the 12th Ward of Minneapolis. The household consists of Charley, 30, Mary, 26, Henry, 0, and Charley Peterson, 25, probably a boarder. Everyone but Henry was born in Norway.

In the 1895 state census, he and his family live at 2630 13th Avenue S. Charles is an engineer and has lived at the present address for 8 years and been in Minnesota for 14 years. No wife is listed so Mary has died by this time. Edwin is still living with the family. There seems to be a “domestic” living with them named Anna Wang, age 32.

Charles and family were still living at 2630 13th Ave S. in Minneapolis at the time of the 1900 census (he was a widower by then). Charles is a stationary fireman. In that census, Edwin is not listed with the rest of Charles’s sons.

In the 1905 Minnesota state census, the family is still living at 2630 13th Avenue S. Living with them are Ines M. Jensen, 27, and her daughter (apparently) Elna, 2, and Hulda Carlson, 49, and (perhaps her mother) Annie Carlson, 90. The Jensens were born in Denmark and had been in Minnesota for 1 month. The Carlsons were born in Sweden and had been in Minnesota for 32 years. Ines Jensen was a domestic, Hulda Carlson was a dressmaker. Charles was a blacksmith, Henry was a day laborer, and George was a skilled mechanic. Edwin was not living with the family.

The 1909 Minneapolis city directory shows him living at 2630 13th Avenue South, occupation “oiler.”

Charles lived at 2630 13th Avenue S until about 1913 when they moved to 4036 11th Ave. S. In 1917, they moved to 4032 11th Ave. S. (which may be the same house). All of the lots on the west side of 11th between 40th and 41st Streets are empty in the 1914 Minneapolis plat book. Thus, Charles was probably the first owner of 4032 11th. The confusion about the correct house number probably arose because there would have been several empty lots on either side of Charles’s house when they first moved in. Although there is a house at 4036, Charles’s house was probably the one at 4032, the address that seems to have been settled on.

    Charles’s obituary appeared in the Saturday, September 7th edition of the Minneapolis Tribune: “Charles Hendrickson, 81, a resident of Minneapolis for 56 years, died at St. Barnabas Hospital. His home was at 4032 11th Avenue S. Mr. Hendrickson was born in Namdalen, Norway. He is survived by his wife, seven sons, Henry, George, Theodore, Carson, Adolph, Edwin, and Arthur, a daughter, Mrs. Frank W. {sic} Carter, a brother, Christ Hansen of Minneapolis, four brothers and three sisters in Norway, 20 grandchildren, and a great-grandchild. Funeral services will be Monday at 3 PM at the Enger Funeral Home, Grant Street and Park Avenue. Burial at Crystal Lake Cemetery.” {We don’t know who that great-grandchild was.}

    Birth:
The Luster bygdebok, in its record of Kari’s children, says that Charles was born in Namdalen in Nord-Trøndelag. That agrees with the birthplace designation of Rørvik.

The son of Charles Hendrickson, Martha’s second husband.

In the 1909 Minneapolis city directory, he was living at Charles and Martha’s at 2630 13th Avenue S and was a clerk for Simmons Hardware Co.

George, and his new wife Caroline, were living next door to Charles and Martha at the time of the 1910 census. Both families were living in the area of 26th and 13th Avenue S. George is 24 and Caroline is 23. They are shown to have been married “0” years. George is a shipping clerk at a hardware company. They were renting the house they were living in. Caroline had had no children.

George registered for the WWI draft on September 12, 1918, at Local Board Division No. 12 at 3002 27th Ave S. He is living at 4137 21st Avenue South and is working as a machinist for the Minneapolis Street and Machine Company. He lists his nearest relative as his wife, Mrs. Caroline Hendrickson. He is described as of medium height and build with blue eyes and black hair.

George and Caroline and family were renting a home or part of a home at what appears to be 3203 21st Avenue in Minneapolis at the time of the 1920 census. Both of George’s parents were born in Norway.

At the time of the 1930 census, the family was living at 6605 1st Avenue in Richfield in a $4500 house that George owned. They had a radio. The household consisted of George, 44, Caroline, 43, Mildred S., 19, Chester G., 16, Wilbur G., 13, and George R., 2. George and Caroline were each 23 when they were married. Other Events and Attributes:

    • Baptism: 1 Sep 1889, Minnesota

    Notes:

Must have died outside of Minnesota.

In the 1909 Minneapolis city directory, he may be the Theo Hendrickson, a clerk for Wyman, Partridge & Co., who lives at 2104 30th Ave. S.

In the 1910 census, he lives with his brother Henry.

At the time that their first child was born, the couple lived at 657 Fillmore Street in northeast Minneapolis.

Shown as Theodore Christopher Hendrickson on his draft registration card (June 5, 1917). At that time, he was married with two children and living at 422 Pierce St., N.E. He was employed by Drake Marble and Tile Co. as a tile setter. He did not claim exemption from the draft. He was described as tall and of slender build with blue eyes and light brown hair. He registered for the draft in Iowa.

In the 1920 census, he is probably the 30 year-old Theodore Hendrickson living in Minneapolis with his wife Anna and their three children, Maria, George, and nine-month old Benard. Their address is 437 Fillmore Street in northeast Minneapolis. Theodore is a tile setter.

In the 1930 census, he and Anna and their children live in Oklahoma City in a house that they own. The three sons who were born in Illinois and Minnesota apparently have died: the two sons with them in Oklahoma City were born in Oklahoma. Theodore is a tile setter. Theodore was not a veteran.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Occupation: pipe fitter, electrician at electrical firm

    Notes:

Not shown in the SSDI. Not listed in the MHS index of Minnesota Death Certificates.

Edgar is apparently the son of Charles whom Cora refers to as having been in business with Maurice for awhile and then absconding.

In the 1909 Minneapolis city directory, he is Edgar O Hendrickson, a helper for Blodgett and Co. and lives with his father and stepmother at 2630 13th Avenue S.

    Godfather to Myrtle Hendrickson Carter.

Edgar is in the Minneapolis city directory for 1915: he still lived with Charles and Martha and worked for a company known as Jerdee & Hendrickson. In 1917, Edgar, still living at his parents’ home, worked for the Elker Electric Co. Edgar was not listed in the 1918 city directory and was apparently serving in the military because he is back, and listed as “USA”, in the 1919 directory. His occupation is listed as “elec” in the 1920 city directory. In 1921, 1922, and 1923, Edgar works at the Twin City Chandelier Manufacturing Co. at 4037 18th Avenue South which was apparently also his residence. The 1923 directory was the last year in which Edgar appears.

Eileen’s research says that Edgar was shot and killed in Chicago in 1934.

Edgar registered for the WWI draft on June 5, 1917, in the 7th Ward, 12th precinct of Minneapolis. He listed is birthday as September 3, 1891. He is single and living at 4032 11th Avenue So. He was employed “for himself” as an electrician in Minneapolis. He claimed to have spent 4 years in the M.N.G. (Minnesota National Guard?), attaining the rank of Corporal in the Artillery branch. Edgar did not claim exemption from the draft. He is described as of medium height and build with blue eyes and light brown hair. He was “partly” bald.

Edgar was still single and living at home with his parents at the time of the 1920 census.

An advertisement in the 20 Mar 1922 edition of the Star, p. 3, lists him as the prroprietor of the Twin City Chandelier Mfg. Co., 713 Washington Avenue S., “the only union manufacturer of Electric Fixtures in the Twin Cities.”

Edgar and his family were living in Chicago at the time of the 1930 census. The family consisted of Edgar, 38, his wife Corinne, 35, their son Robert L, 9, and their daughter Marion S., 7. They rented their home for $35/month and they had a radio. Edgar was first married at age 28, Corinne at age 22, so she may have been married before she married Edgar. The children were born in Minnesota. Corinne was born in Illinois and her father in Indiana and mother in Illinois. Edgar’s occupation appears to be fixture hanger at an electric company. Edgar was a veteran of the World War.

According to Illinois Deaths and Stillbirths, Edgar and Corinne lived at 1831 N Lawndale at the time of his death. He was an electrician.

Edgar died defending his wife from a gunman attempting to rob them in their home, an apartment at 1831 North Lawndale Avenue in Chicago, in a home invasion. Edgar was shot in the abdomen and died on the way to the hospital. Edgar had been electrical foreman at the Procter & Gamble factory at 1232 West North Avenue for 5 years. He also had a small electrical contracting shop in the basement of the building where he lived. The murderer is described as a youth in some accounts. Corinne survived despite having the gun to her head and the trigger pulled twice. Both times the weapon mis-fired.

    Birth:
2 Sep 1891 according to Illinois Deaths and Stillbirths and according to Cook County Deaths

    Died:
    “shot and killed”

Edgar married Corinne E WILCOX on 8 Sep 1920 in Cook County, Illinois. Corinne (daughter of Homer WILCOX and Gussie) was born on 25 Jul 1894 in Cook County, Illinois; died in Jul 1969 in Lake County, Illinois; was buried in Acacia Park Cemetery, Norwood, Cook County, Illinois. 2. 23. Marion Louise HENDRICKSON  Descendancy chart to this point was born on 25 Oct 1922 in Hennepin County, Minnesota; died on 25 Sep 1935 in Cook County, Illinois; was buried in Acacia Park Cemetery, Norwood, Cook County, Illinois.

  5. 6.  Carson Marius HENDRICKSON Descendancy chart to this point (1.Karsten1) was born on 3 Aug 1890 in Minnesota; died on 12 Jul 1981 in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin; was buried in Holy Cross Cemetery, Milwaukee, Milwaukee County, Wisconsin.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Occupation: Tile setter

    Notes:

In the 1909 Minneapolis city directory he lives at home at 2630 13th Avenue S and his occupation is “helper” for Northwest Marble and Tile Co.

Seems to be shown as “Carlson” in the 1910 census and Karsten M. in the 1900 census.

Carson remained at the home that Charles and Martha lived in at 2630 13th Avenue South in Minneapolis after Charles and Martha moved to 4032 11th Avenue South in 1913. Carson is absent from the Minneapolis city directory in 1915, 1916, and 1917. (During this period he may have been in military service.) In the 1918 and 1919 city directories, Carson is shown as a tile setter employed by the Drake Marble and Tile Co. in Robbinsdale. His residence isn’t shown for 1918 but for 1919 is shown as 3334 Thomas. Carson is absent again from the city directories in 1920 and 1921 but appears again in the 1922-25 directories, still living at 3334 Thomas and still employed by the Drake Marble and Tile Co.

Carson registered for the WWI draft on May 29, 1917, in the 7th precinct of Minneapolis. He lists his birthdate has September 13, 1890, in Minneapolis. At the time of his draft registration he is married, with 4 children, and is living at 335 Fifth St., N.E. He is a tile layer for the N.W. Marble and Tile Company and he claims to be employed in Rochester, MN. He says that he has not been in any military service and he does claim an exemption from the draft based upon his “dependent relatives.” He is described as tall and of medium build with blue eyes and dark brown hair.

In the 1920 census, Carson and his family lived at 3334 Thomas Avenue in north Minneapolis. He is a tile setter for a mail order house.

In the 1930 census, Carson and his family live in Milwaukee. Carson is a tile setter. He is not a veteran.

In the 1940 census, Carson, Laura, and their five sons live in Milwaukee. Carson Sr. is a tile setter for a tile manufacturing company.

    Birth:
this is the date in SSDI

Carson married Laura Rose FISHER on 16 Mar 1911 in Hennepin County, Minnesota. Laura was born about 1891 in Minnesota; died on 21 Oct 1964 in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin; was buried in Holy Cross Cemetery, Milwaukee, Milwaukee County, Wisconsin. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    • Minnesota Death Certificate: 1974-MN-020579
    • Occupation: Salesman, electric signs, Housepainter

    Notes:

Birth certificate says “Hendricksen” with no first name.

Arthur was employed as a salesman for the Federal Electric Co. at the time of Joyce’s birth. At that time, the family was living at 4104 13th Avenue S.

At the time of the 1930 census, Arthur, 22, and his wife Gertrude, 21, and their daughter Joyce, 1-1/2, were living in a house they owned (worth $4300), at 3545 44th Avenue South in Minneapolis.

In the 1940 census, Arthur and his three youngest children were living with his widowed mother at 4032 11th Avenue S. Included in the household as a “lodger” was 42 year-old Anna Petrin. Arthur Sr. was a salesman for an advertising company. Anna Petrin was a machine operator at an underwear factory. Arthur was a high school graduate. Anna Petrin had had three years of high school. Martha had an eighth-grade education. Martha, Arthur, Barbara, and Art Jr. had lived in that same house in 1935. Because Arthur and Barbara and Art Jr. had lived with Martha at 4032 11th in April of 1935, even before Patsy was born, Gertie was probably living with Martha and Charles also in 1935.

Here's a timeline of Arthur and Gert:

1930: In the city directory, Arthur lives at 3545 44th Avenue S. Still a salesman for Federal Electric.

April, 1930: In the 1930 census, Arthur, Gertrude, and Joyce live at 3545 44th Avenue in south Minneapolis. Arthur is a salesman of electric signs.

December, 1930: Barbara, Arthur and Gertrude's second child is born in Minneapolis.

1932: In the city directory, Arthur and Gertrude live at 4032 11th Avenue S (his parents' home). He is a manager for Twin City Sign Studios.

1934: In the city directory, Arthur and Gertrude live at 2501 17th Avenue S. Arthur is a sign painter.

Summer, 1934 (approx): Joyce Hendrickson, age 6-1/2, is struck by a car and is seriously hurt.

Late February, 1935: Gertrude becomes pregnant with Patsy.

April, 1935 (if we believe the 1940 census): Arthur and Art Jr. and Barbara (and, presumably, Joyce and Gertrude) live at his parents' home, 4032 11th Avenue S.

    September, 1935: Arthur's father dies.

November 24, 1935: Patsy is born in Minneapolis. Arthur and Gert live at 114 W. 33rd Street.

1936: In the city directory, Arthur and Gertrude live at 114 West 33rd Street. Arthur is a salesman.

March, 1937: Joyce is institutionalized at the Cambridge State Hospital. According to her death certificate, her residence at the time she was institutionalized was 114 West 33rd Street.

1937: In the city directory, Arthur and Gertrude live at 114 West 33rd Street. Arthur is a salesman for Pioneer Neon Co.

1938: In the city directory, Arthur (no wife mentioned) lives at 4032 11th Avenue S, his mother's house. He is a salesman for Pioneer Neon Co.

August, 1938: Gertrude marries Robert Marshall in Duluth. He is 23, she is 28.

1939: In the city directory, Arthur lives at his mother's house. He is a salesman.

January, 1939: Gertrude and Robert have their first child, Robert, born in Duluth.

1940: In the city directory, Arthur lives at his mother's house. He is an artist.

April, 1940: In the 1940 census, Arthur and his three youngest children, plus Anna Petrin, live at his mother's house. Arthur is a salesman for an advertising company.

April, 1940: In the 1940 census, Gertrude and Robert, and their son Robert, live in Duluth.

1941: In the city directory, Arthur, a sign painter, lives at 4032 11th.

After that, Arthur is no longer in the Minneapolis city directory.

In the 1950 census, Arthur and his wife Anna and Arthur’s children Arthur C, 17, and Patricia, 14, live in South Harbor in Mille Lacs County. Arthur is an interior decorator in the painting business.
