Han var først på Stele 21/1. Det henger et maleri av han og kona hans på Beitostølen høyfjellshotell. Han giftet seg til Kvam og flyttet dit. Lensmannskontoret på Stele var en peisestue som nå er sel på heimstølen til Stele 21/1.

Han var en høy og rank mann med langt hår som hang i krøller ned over skuldrene. Han hadde stort rødlig skjegg. Han ble meget velstående i sin lensmannsperiode og var en meget aktet lensmann. Bunadtøyet i Valdres herrebunad er etter ham. OWB (Wang ensteen-Slægten) skriver om han: "Han var en Tid Gårdbruker på Steile og blev Lendsmann i Vang 1821. Hans Kontorbygning på Steile var ikke som Lendsmandsbygninger nutildags, men kund en liden Peisestue, der den Dag i Dag benyttes som et efter nuv ærende Forhold lidet og uanseligt Seterhus på Steiles Hjemseter. Det var først av ikke rart bevendt med Hans Kundskaber, men Hodet var lyst - Han var af sin Samtid holdt for en Begavelse av Rang - og det blev ikke længe, får han var Stillingen fu ldt voksen. Og det er fortalt af ham selv, at han skrev sin ansøgning om Lendsmannsbestillingen på Fjøstrevet, fordi han vilde være uset og ikke lade sig mærke med, at han , unge Mand, optrådte som Lendsmandsaspirant, overfor sin Forgjenger, Lends mand og Stortingsmand Ole Qvam, der efter sigende havde gjort Lendsmandsstillingen ledig mod at lade sig betale 100 Spd. Og så fik den smarte Lendsmand Qvam smukt finde seg i, at han aldrig fik Lendsmandsstillingen igjen, for det viste sig me r og mer, at det lyst Hode på Wangensteen greiede Stillingen udmærket godt.

Lendsmand Wangensteen var en stærkbygged Mand, nærved 3 Alen høi og rank som Gran. Ansigtet var vakkert, Næsen dog lidt fladtrygt, Munden var velformet, og Håret, som han bar tredelt, i smagfulde krøllede Lokker langt ned på Skuldrene og det rødgu le Skjæg bredte sig som et Skjold over hele Brystet. Stemmen var sterk og klangfuld, så når han f.Ex. læste Bekjentgjørelser fra Kirkebakken, var det en Nydelse at høre ham såvel på kort som længer Afstand. Hans Optræden var udsøgt høflig såvel ov erfor høi som lav, og når han talte med sine Overordnede skede det altid på stående Fod. Men når så Vedkommende syntes det blev for meget av dette "på stående Fod" saa brugte de at sige: Værsgo, sit ned Lendsmann, sit neden ned". Nokså beskeden t pleide han da at svare; "Tak, Tak, Tusind Tak".

Lars Wangensteen blev en rig Mand i de 50 år han var Lendsmand. Det antages at han var Eier av 10 til 15 Tusind Spd. og et Par Gårde; Kvam og Stele. Hans Døtre kom til de største Gårde i Vang og Slidre og for Sønnernes Vedkommende lagde det sig sl ig, at "nogen kom ud" og de ind. Alligevel ser det ikke ud til at den Lennsmands Rigdom og Magtfylde har havt stor Tilvækst hos alle hans Efterkommere. Tvertimod! Lendsmand Wangensteen var gift 2 Gange, første Gang med Maren Johnsdatter, med hvilken han fik Gården Kvam i Medgift. I dette ægteskab - den andet var barnløst - var 7 Barn."

Ove B Stele (Wangensteen) skriver dette om ham i en oversikt over lensmann i Valdres historielags tidsskrift: "Lars Nilsen Wangensteen Han var en tid gårdbruker på Steile og blev lendsmand i 1830. Hans kontorbygning på Steile var en liten peisestue, der den dag i dag benyttes som et efter nutidens forhold litet og uanseelig sæterhus på Steiles hjemsæter. Det var fra først av småt bevendt med hans kundskaper, men hodet var lyst og det blev ikke længe, førend han var stillingen fuldt voksen. Det er fortalt av ham selv, at han skrev sin ansøkning om lendsmandsbestillingen på fjøstrævet, fordi han vil de være uset og ikke la sig merke med, at han, unge mand, optrådte som lensmandsansøker overfor sin forgjænger lensmand og stortingsmand Ole Qvam på Kvale, der efter sigende hadde gjort lensmandsbestillingen ledig mot at la sig betale 100 spd . Og så fik den smarte lensmand Qvam smukt finde sig i, at han aldrig fik lensmandsstillingen igjen, for det viste sig mer og mer at de lyse hode på Lars Wangensteen greide stillingen noksaa godt.

Lensmand Wangensteen blev en rik mand i de ca. 50 år som han var lensmand i Vang. For i hans tid vokste retshandlinger op som paddehatter i en høstnat. Og det har bl. a. været sagt at anmeldelser, stevninger, forhør og domme i anledning brændevins loven av 1848 økede lensmandens indtægter. Ved sådanne anledninger brukte lensmanden at si: "Gudske lov for lov og ret". Men "Klokkarguten" - søn til klokker Tostensen på søndre Bø - som var mer "fremtalende" end mange andre mennesker sa: "Du tal a so ein man, men peika so ein skjelm".

I det samme fik lensmanden øie på han Trond i Brudgomshouge og sa: Dæ æ formykji me de Trond! Du ha sagt at Fan skulde ta me o fautn o skrivar'n o prukeraterad'n". Men han Trond påstod at det hadde han ikke sagt - han hadde ikke sagt at Fan skuld e ta dem alle på en gang, men så litt og litt omsenn.

Men lensmanden var nok ikke så lei som noen ville ha det til. Jeg mindes godt at ha set et brev fra lensmanden til en god ven og fordums nabo. Brevet lyder bl. a. slik: Det har kommet mig for øre at du min gode ven B. har brændt brændevin ulovlig; men det tror jeg ikke". Dermed var den sak klappet og klar.

Berit Hamre var en slektning av Nils OBW (Wangensteen-Slægten):skriver Han var en stille og frædsel Mand, som vilde alle vel og ingen ilde. Han lå ikke - som Wangensteener ellers - i Kamp og Strid om Stillinger i Bygdepolitikkens Tjeneste, men holdt sig udelukkende til sit Gårdsbrug på Thune. I Selskabslivet kunde han være rigtig lun og morsom, tog et Glas, lidt til og et Glas atpå og var ved sådanne Anledninger varmt interesseret for Napoleon den førstes Bedrifter og sagde med Eftertryk: "Napoleon var en stor Kriger!" Javist var Napoleon stor, men Trond Thune var derfor ikke mindre stor, - fordi han kjendte sig selv og ikke vilde være noget andet og mer end den han var, og man bør huske, at det er de små Helte som gjør de største Indsatsen i Livet. Ved siden av ordførervervet, som han hadde i mange år, var han dokumentskriver og forlikskommisær. Han ble syk etter et bryllup sør i bygda, hvor han fikk for mye å drikke og døde av det. Med andre ord drakk han seg nok ihjel på dårlig hjemmebrent. Om de andre barna se merknad under kona Sigrid. Han var åttende ordføreren i Vang og den første som hadde hvervet mer enn i tre år. Han satt som ordfører til 1861, da Nils Thune overtok hvervet.

De fleste av barna dro til USA i 1868, de andre fulgte etter i 1876. De første må altså kalles de virkelige pionerer. De fleste ble farmere. Se fil USA OBW (Wangensteen-Slægten) skriver om Nils: "Vistnok med fuld Grund er det sagt at Wangensteenslægten er en åndskraftig Slægt og at enkelte af dens Medlemmer er høit begavede Mennesker Nils Wangensteen Stele må således i første Rekke nævnes blandt dem, som har raget høiest i Begavelse og Kundskaber. Han var i Årrækker Formandskabets Ordfører, Forligelseskommisær samt privat Brev- og Dokumentskriver for hver den, som trængte til hans Bistand. Han skrev et Indhold lige så godt som en Jurist og hans Håndskrift var meget vakker. Men hvad de kommunale Gjøremål angik, så afløstes han af sin Slægtning Nils Thune. Det var ingen annen Råd. Endeligt kom det sidste og skjæbnesvangre Tillfælde. Det var et Bryllup syd i Bygden og mer end nok af sterke Drikke. Så skrantet Nils Steile og var sykelig en kort Tid, indtil Døden gjorde en Ende på den før såvel legemlig som åndelig kjæmpesterke Mand. 54 År gammel"

Dette tyder på at han var alkoholiker?OBW hentyder ofte at lensmennene reiste vidt omkring og hvor de kom fikk de en "sjenk", derfor ble de ofte litt for glade i "det sterke".

Frøholm skriver:"Han var på Berge ikring 1840, men overtok garden her i 1842. Han ble sjuk etter et bryllaup sør i bygda, der det var mykje sterk drykk."(Dette kan også tyde på at han fikk i seg dårlig hjemmebrent og døde av det!)

Sigrid og Nils hadde også disse barna: Maren død lietn Maren (1842- ) gm Ole I Flaten (1842- ) de giftet seg i 1865 og dro til USA. Der ble han bokholder.

Han var meget god til å synge. Han "hullet" til dans for ungdommen når de ikke hadde spillemann. Salmedikteren og folkevisesamleren Lindemann, var innom ham for å skrive ned folketoner, men da åpnet han ikke munnen. Da Lindemann var gått satte han i å synge for full hals! Av ham lærte far sangen "Alla mina geita". Han drev med mye hester og kjøpte og solgte hester stadig vekk. Gården hadde mange flere hester enn det var bruk for. Ha n kjørte lass til Lærdal og Oslo, noe som var en rett gården hadde.

Han var en dyktig arbeider, og ved siden av hesteavl og salg arbeidet han mye med glad i stein, og slet på mange steiner som han brukte til bygging. Bl.a. er det en stor stein i våningshuset i Bøe som er brukt til gulvås, den har han kjørt med hes t og slede fra Helin. Den store ovnshella i vår hytte på Tango, er det også han som har dratt dit. Nils var ung da han ga fra seg Bøe 41/2, han beholdt derfor mye for seg selv, og det førte til at vi fikk hytta på Tango. Først leide de det nedlagte selet i Ellingbøjordet, (Sporastøyl-hytta er bygd på tomtene etter det). Men kyrne til Bøe 41/ 2 fulgte med ned dit, fordi de kjente bestemor best, dermed ble Ragndi sint og nektet bestemør å ta sin del av bølingen ned til Ellingbøjordet. Da bestemor ikke orket å bære melken fra sine kyr ned fra øvre Tangadn, kom far og onkel Nils (NIL S N BØE f. 23.jul.1881) på at de skulle kjøpe en gammel stue i bygda og sette den opp på Tango. Far hadde fått ideen til en hyttetomt der av Arnold Restad, senere krigshelt og advokat. (Restad var også den første styreformann i NRK. På byggeplate n ved inngangen til Radio huset står navnet hans.) Restad ville bygge på Tango og spurte far om han kunne undersøke med grunneierne om de ville gi ham lov. Andris Sygare sa nei. Han ville ikkje ha byfolk som kunne skremme kyrne på Tango. Da far sp urte om han og onkel Nils kunne få sette opp en hytte der, sa Andris ja. De kjøpte husmannsstua på Syndrolsbøkko under Myre av Bøye Myre i 1916 og satte den opp som livaursel på Tango. Far har senere bygd den om.

Han var poståpner, ordfører fra 1862, Stortingsmann 1871. Han overtok ordførervervet fra Nils Wangensteen i 1861 og hadde det helt fram til 1877. Altså i 16 år. Ingen andre hadde sittet så lenge som ham i Vang.

I "VTHT" 1981 står det om Nils:
"Han overtok farsgarden i 1855. Gift med Marit Helgesdotter, dotter til Helge Torsteinsen Kvåle og Sigrid Andersdotter. Thune døyde i meget ung alder. Han var medlem av herredsstyret frå 1862 og vart ordfører med det same. Det var han til 1877.
Thune var representant på Stortinget fyrste gong 1871-73, attvald 1874-76 og i 1880-82. Han var varamann 1877-79 og møtte då i staden for Baggerud. (HB: Det vil si at han satt sammenhengende på Stortinget i nesten 10 år, Han døde før han kunn e gå inn i den siste Stortingsperioden han var valgt til)

Thuna vart rekna som ein lovande mann, og det var eit tap for Valdres at han gjekk burt i så ung alder. Det var no mange år før ein Valdris vart valt til tingmann, like til 1889. (Men O.K. Ødegård møtte som varamann fleire gonger i denne periode.)

OWB (Wangensteen-ætten) "Han var en mægtig personlighet, havde mange Interesser og stor virkelyst, hvor han kom til at indtage en ledende Stilling i sin Bygd. Og omendskjønt selvlært i ordets fuldeste mening besatt han alligevel en betydelig del Kundskaber sådet påsakkyndigt Hold var sagt at Nils Thune var av Valdresdalens Kundskabsrigeste Mand på den Tid. Også på egen Hånd havde han lagt sig efter Sprog, så han talte flytende Engelsk og lidt Tysk, og han kom derved til at gjøre Tjeneste som Tolk for reisende Engelskmænd.

Han var liden av Vekst men vakker og hans Opptreden så absolut naturlig og ukunstlet, at enhver som kom ham når, følte sig behagelig berørt ved hans Person. I ung Alder blev han indvalgt i Formandskabet, og afløste sin Slægtning Nils Wangensteen i Stillingen som Ordfører. Og da de kommunale Affærer i årrekker var skjøttet i skjønn Enighed af Stedets Prest, Lensmand og dennes Søn Nils W, så blev der nu sterke Rivninger. For Sagen var, at Nils T. var en kamplysten Mand som ikke slog en Tøddel af, førend alle Kommunens Anliggender var i fuld Orden. Og som rimeligt er likte ikke Prest, Lensmand, og den tidligere Ordfører, at Nils T efterhånden kom til å bidrage til å sætte dem ud af Befatning med kommunale Anliggender, og vistnok til Trøst for sig selv brugte de leilighedsvis at citere Napoleons Udsagn om Karl Johan: " Jeg har fostret en Slange ved mit Br yst". For Nils Thune havde erhvervet meget af sine Kundskaber hos Presten, Lensmanden og Nils W. som han havde såmegen Omgang med.

Det bør erindres at Nils T søgte at forhindre Valdres Distrigstsfængsel opført for Amtets og Statens Regning, men her fik han ikke den fornødne Tilslutning. Nu derimod da 50 Års Forløp har kastet Lys over Tingen, viser det sig at Fengslet ikke ale ne er en Uhyrlighed for Distriktet, men at det godtsom har støt uden Belæg og kun tjent til at medføre store årlige Udgifter. Nils Thune kunde ikke nøies med bare at være Ordfører og ledende Mand inden sin Bygd. Med sine sterke Interesse for sociale Spørgsmål følte han Trang til end mer at kaste sig ind i det offentlige Liv, og da han i 1876 for første Gang ble v valgt til Stortingsmand, viste det sig at han var en Mand, ikke bare med passiv Indsigt, men med Ideer og positiv Reformtrang.

Såvel i offentlige som private Gjøremål var Nils T en fremadstrebende Mand. Han var i Årrækker Poståbner og Stationsholder, samt Agent for Emigrations kontoret i Bergen.

Fra sit Gårdsbruk på Thune, som jeg af personlig Erfaring, ved at han elskede så dybt, tog han tunge løft, ryddede Agre og Marken for Sten og Stub og tenkte vistnok at Gården skulde forblevet i Slægtens Eie videre fremover, men så blev ikke Tilfælde, idet den ældste Søn ikke såret længe efter Overtagelsen igjen solgte Gården til Kristoffer Dahl - til stor Græmmelse for den øvrige Slægt. Et Forsøg på at få Gården tilbage me d Odel lykkedes ikke.

Nils Thune var gift med Marit Helgesdatter på Kvale. De havde følgende Barn:

1. Trond ( ) gift med Berit J Wangensteen Kvam ( ) uden Barn. Uddannet Agronom overtog han Fædrenegården som han kort efter solgte og reiste til Amerika, hvorefter han efter 7 Års Forløb kom tilbage som en Rig Mand. Derover var han fø rst Handelsbetjent ved et stort Handelshus, men havde sin egen Forretning i North Branch, Minnesota.

2. Ingeborg gift med fhv Amtskolebestyrer Asle Bergsgaard. Barn: Arne, Haldis Margit og Nils

3. Helge (1861-1950) Stortingsmand og Lagtingspresident. (som fotnote hos OBW står det: For at lette arbeidet med nærværende Slægtsbiografi, var det aftalt at han skulde skrive Udkast til en selvbiografi, men sådant har stedse ladet vente på sig ) (Han ble cand.jur i 1893, lensmann i Vang fra 1891. Han satt på Stortinget i to perioder fra 1911 valgt første gang som suppleant til Statsrevisioen. Da han var lensmann i Vang, hadde han engang arrestert Gjest Bårdsen. Helge skulle kjøre ham til Oslo på selve julaften. Om kvelden tok de inn på et gjestgiveri, og Helge syntes det var leit at Gjest måtte gå i håndje rn på julaften. "Hvis du løva ikkje rømme, ska du sleppe jødne", hadde Helge sagt. Gjest hadde gitt ham sitt æresord på ikke å rømme fra ham. Dermed feiret de julaften og kjørte videre neste dag til Oslo, uten at Gjest satt i håndjern. Da de kom fram ti l politihuset i Oslo, ble alle forferdet over at Gjest ikke satt i "jern". Han ble straks boltet fast. Helge tok farvel med ham, to timer etterpå hadde Gjest rømt fra fengslet i Oslo, (men sitt æresord til Helge holdt han).
Johannes T Nefstad skriver i sin bok, (hvor han ellers har tatt med det meste fra OBW - Wangensteenslekten): Han var student 1884, kand.jur.1893, lensmann i Vang, meget benyttet som kommunemann, medlem av Oppland fylkes utvalg fra 1907 -1911,
gjeldsmeklingsmann. Han var med i anleggsstyret og styret for Valdresbanen 1915-1937, mesteparten av tiden som formann. Han var stortingsvaramann 1910-1912 og stortingsmann fra 1922-1930, lagtingspresident fra 1927-1930, var også medlem av forskjellige offentlige nemder. han var en meget god mann for Vang i den tiden han var på Stortinget, og Vang kommune kan nok takke ham for at de fikk beholde sine fjellrettigheter. Han testamenterte mesteparten av sin store formue til Vang kommun e. Min far, Lars Bøe (1894-) gikk til ham, da han skulle låne penger for å begynne på lærerskolen. han fikk låne 400 korner, som far betalte tilbake de to første årene etter eksamen, enda årslønnen bare var 300 kroner p.r. år!

In the 1900 and 1910 censuses, he was still a farmer in Martin Twp, Rock County, Minnesota. The 1900 census says that he and Ambjor came to the U.S. in 1868. The 1910 census says 1866. Both censuses agree that Ole W. was born in Iowa. In the 1910 census, Ole W., 44, Bertha W., 31, and Luella A., 18, were still single and living at home.

William Ellingboe Passes Away. This week it becomes the painful duty of the Cresent to chronicle the death of one of Hills most respected citizens, Mr. William Ellingboe, who died at Rochester hospital on the morning of December 3rd, where he went to have an operation for abdomen trouble.
He suffered with several severe hemorrhages of the stomach about a year ago and was ill for a couple of months but since then had been able to be about the streets until about three weeks ago when he was again taken sick…. His daughter Mrs. Emma Shortt was in constant attendance at his bedside (at Rochester).
Mr. Ellingboe was 74 on November 7th, and was one of the pioneer settlers of Martin township, having lived on the old home farm since 1873 until about two years ago, when the family moved to Hills.
Deceased was married in Wisconsin and is survived by a wife, seven daughters and one son, two children, a boy and a girl, having proceeded their father to the Great Beyond.
In spite of his advanced years Mr. Ellingboe was of a jolly disposition and always had a kind word for everyone. Much could be written concerning the early history of the deceased since coming to this township and settling here, when this county was a veritable wilderness as he was numbered among the first pioneers to settle this section of the county.

He was united in marriage to the wife that survives him on September 30, 1866 at Jefferson Prairie, Wisconsin.
Deceased leaves a wife and the following children to mourn him: Ole of Hills, Miss Betsy Olena of Los Angeles, CA, Miss Bertha and Luella of Tempe, AZ, Mrs. W.H. Shortt of Sioux City, IA, Mrs. Sherman Coxe of Denver, CO, Mrs. W.A. West of Sioux Falls, SD, Miss Ida of Hills.

His obit in the Sioux Falls newspaper:

Funeral services for the late William Ellingboe, father of Mrs. William West of this city, were held at Hills, Minnesota, this afternoon. The deceased died at Rochester, Minnesota, on December 3rd following an operation for abdominal trouble. Mr. Ellingboe was 74 years old and one of the pioneer settlers of Martin township, Rock County, where he had lived on a farm until about two years ago when the family moved to Hills. He is survived by his wife, seven daughters, and one son.

He is listed in “The Valdris Book”, a history of the Valdris Samband published in 1920 (available on Google Books), as “William Ellingboe Hills Minn.” His entry shows that he was a member of the Samband between 1902 and 1913 and that he came to America in 1866.

In a 1914 land ownership map of Rock County, Minnesota, W O Ellingboe owned 160 acres in Section 29 of Martin Twp, about a mile and a half west of the village of Hills. His farm consisted of two 80 acre parcels, the north half of the southwest quarter and the east half of the northwest quarter.

William’s last will and testament was dated 22 Mar 1912. It names his son Ole as his executor. The two 80 acre parcels were to go to his wife, as a life estate, and then to William’s seven daughters after Ambjor’s death. In addition, his two daughters Betsey Ellingboe and Emma Ellingboe Shortt were to receive immediately on his death $100 each. The rest of his estate was to go to his son Ole and the seven daughters, share and share alike.

In the 1910 Norwegian census, he was the owner of Hammerstad (Kvaale) 38/2 in Vang. His occupation also included “Komandersergeant.” Living with him were his wife and three childen plus Maren Olsdatter Kvale (#11613 ), a servant.

He is shown as Bøye Olsen Ellingbø in the 1886 land register, owner of Kvaale Øvre 38/2 Nygaard.

He is I5851 in Jim’s Ellingboe tree.

Jim’s notes: Helge Hammarstad wrote that Bøye O. Ellingbø bought half of Kvåle, where his wife had been raised. In 1887, when the new farm was split off from Øvre Kvåle, it was named Hammerstad (after the spit of land called Hammaren that sticks out into Vangsmjøsa), and named his children for the farm because there were so many called Ellingbø. He built a house, hay barn, cow barn and horse stall for the new farm, and cottages and barns at both Helestrønd and Smådalen, the last being built in the village and taken up to the mountain by pack horse in 1908.

He was a sergeant, then master sergeant (fanejunker, the hightest under officer rank) and all his sons went to under officer school. From 1888-1935 he farmed Hammerstad.

He is shown in the 1885 state census as T. N. Flaten, living in Minneapolis. The household is himself, 35, “Maude”, 30, Bertie, 10, Dorothea, 8, Nellie, 5, and Nels, 2.

The 1895 census showed that he had been in Minnesota for 26 years which would be consistent with him and Randi emigrating in 1869. Tosten was a dairyman and he and his family lived at 1604 East Lake Street. Lærer, kirkesanger, klokker, lærebokforfatter og dirigent bl.a. for Vang Sanglag, Bygdelagskoret og Kjelsås skoles jentekor (som han også stiftet). Han har utgitt flere lærebøker, bla grammatikkhefter og en synonymordliste sammen med Fossestøl. Den er bygd på Sandveis ordliste. Han er født på Tango og er den eneste kjente person som er født der. På hans 90 års dag ble 27. juli utropt til Tangadns nasjonaldag.

Han gikk den 3-årige lærerskolen på Hamar og tok eksamen i 1915. Deretter var han i 2 år lærer ved framhaldsskolen i Vang, den var på Fredheim. Da bodde han hjemme hos sin mor og far i Bøe. Vi har skolebilde fra den tid på Tango. Mange av bygda s "gamle" gikk der. I 1917 dro han til Åsnes i Solør, hvor han var i 2 år på Toverud skole, fram til 1919. Han har fortalt at en gang var det så kaldt der at de ikke fikk varmen opp i skolestua og elevene måtte gå hjem. Mens han var i Solør fikk han spanskesyken, da syklet han hjem til Vang for å ligge syk der. På et stevne møtte han styreren for Vestmar folkehøyskule i Drangedal (Telemark), Andreas Ystad, som spurte om han ville bli lærer der. Far kom dit i 1918 og ble der i seks år. Han kaller det selv noe av den mest interessante lærerperioden sin. Mens han var på Vestmar ble han syk, legen fant ikke ut hva det var og far var ett år og 6 mnd på sjukeheimen i Vestre Slidre. Ystad skulle til Marcello Haugen for ett eller annet , og far ba ham også spørre for seg. Da Ystad var ferdig med sine spørsmål, fortalte han at han hadde noen spørsmål fra en venn. "Et øyeblikk", sa Marcello, og holdt Ystad i hånden en stund, "Nå har jeg han", sa han og sa at far skulle skrive ti l ham. Det gjorde far og Marcello svarte at han hadde noen utposinger nederst på en lunge. Det viste seg å være pleuritten. Foreldrene hans flyttet fra Bøe og til ham på Klukkarhaugo, hvor de hadde noen kyr. I Vang ble han også klokker og kirkesanger hos den tyskfødte sogneprest Fürwald. Sammen med ham opplevde far mye moro. Han sier selv at det var et utviklende samarbeid. Bl.a. var de sammen i Tyskland. I 1930 satte de opp og spilte "Olavsbilete " i øsende regn for Kong Håkon, til minne om slaget på Stiklestad på 900 års jubileet for innføringen av kristendommen i Norge. Han har satt ut sangen "Alla mina geita" som han kunne etter sin far. Gurvin har også skrevet ned den sangen, etter notater som far har gjort. Far hadde skrevet en note litt slurvete, dermed skrev Gurvin sangen ned med en note feil. Ilse hørte de n i et kor, og oppdaget at det var en liten feil i sangen.

Far var en god felespiller, helt til han brakk lillefingeren og den ble gipset feil av dr. Novotny. Han fortsatte å spille fele etter det, men som han selv sa var det bare som en skygge av hvordan han egentlig hadde kunnet spille. Jeg og alle andr e barn som hørte han spille var veldig imponert over et stykke han spilte som hadde med seg alle slags lyder fra fjøset. Han hadde en nydelig sangstemme, tenor, som gjorde ham kjent som kirkesanger. Han hadde lært stemmebruk hos Marie Irgens, og opptrådte ofte ved festlige anledninger, f.eks. i Valdreslaget.

En sommerdag nellom omkring 1915, kom den senere krigshelten og professoren Arnold Restad, til Tangadn. (Restad ble også senere den første styreformannen i Norsk rikskringkasting). Restad forteller selv om denne turen i en av sine mange bøker, ha n ble rodd fra Vassenda til Helestrønd, og gikk sammen med sitt følge gjennom Tangelia. Der ble han betatt av den vakre naturen og plukket seg ut en tomt på Mehankberget. Far var på stølen da, og Restad kom opp for å snakke om tomten. Far skull e spørre grunneierne om Restad kunne få bygge en hytte på Mehankberget. Andris J Bøe (Andris Sygarde) sa nei, men da far spurte om han selv kunne få sette opp en hytte, var det ikke nei i Andris sin munn. Far og onkel Nils (Nils N Bøe 1881- ) kjøpe en gammel stue fra Syndrolsbøkko, og satte den opp på Mehankberget i 1917, etter at de hadde spurt alle grunneierne om lov. Det var Nils på Kjelvo (se denne ) som satte opp selet, etter at bestefar (Nil s T Bøe) hadde kjørt det opp om vinteren. Selet er antakelig fra midten av 1600-tallet. Den siste som ble født i det, døde i brannen på Kvåle 39/1 i 1936.

Far var et meget klokt menneske, som har tenkt gjennom de fleste sider ved livet. Selv om han var gift med mor, som var tysk, gikk han inn i tysk fangenskap under krigen. Han satt i lærerleiren i Kirkenes, da jeg ble født. Jeg har aldri hørt ha n snakke stygt om noe menneske. Selv om jeg er hans sønn, vil jeg kalle ham en "meget høvisk mann" i tråd med det OBW skriver i Wangensteenslekten. For meg er det ingen overdrivelse når jeg kaller ham "DET BESTE MENNESKE JEG HAR MØTT", selv da ha n gikk i sitt 100 år, hadde han omsorg for andre mennesker, og snakket om livets mening og hvor viktig det er å ta vare på hverandre. Fysisk påsto han at han ikke er sterk, og jeg husker godt han sa at han aldri ville bli så gammel som brødrene sine, da jeg var ung. Likevel overlevde han alle sine søsken og var den av dem som ble eldst. Han ville alltid bli med til Tangadn i pås ken, uansett hvor strevsom det kunne være å komme opp dit. Da han var 98 år gammel, kjørte han selv snøscooter ned til Briskebu.

Han døde på Ullevål sykehus 18. mars 1995, nesten 101 år gammel. Ilse og Eva var hos ham. Selv var jeg på et møte i styret i Cricom regional i Portugal.

Nils Nilsen Thune (27 May 1880 – 28 May 1950) was a Norwegian jurist and civil servant.
He was born in Vang, Oppland, and was a son of Nils Trondsen Thune. He graduated with the cand.jur. degree in 1902. He was hired in the Trondhjem police in 1911, and became police inspector in the city in 1916 and an assessor in 1920. In 1924 he was appointed as the district stipendiary magistrate in Inderøy. During these years he was a member of the city councils of both Trondhjem and Steinkjer. In 1933 he became district stipendiary magistrate of Eiker, Modum and Sigdal, and in 1945 he became acting County Governor of Buskerud, and he got the position on a permanent basis in 1946.
In 1945 he was also named as a member of the commission Undersøkelseskommisjonen av 1945 that scrutinized the actions of the Norwegian government in 1940. The other commission members were Gustav Adolf Lammers Heiberg, Arnold Holmboe, Ole Hallesby, Ernst Fredrik Eckhoff, Arne Bergsgård and Sverre Steen, and the secretary was Helge Sivertsen. The background for the commission was the German invasion of Norway on 9 April 1940, and the question was raised whether Norway could have avoided it through a different foreign and security policy. Second, the actions of Norwegian authorities between 9 April and 25 September 1940 were investigated, both regarding the three branches of government (Parliament, Government, Supreme Court) that eventually laid down their offices, but also the transition authority (the Administrative Council) as well as other relevant civil and military bodies.
In April 1950 it was decided that he retire from his position on 1 October the same year. However, he died on Drammen Hospital on 28 May 1950, having suffered a heart problem during the funeral of his brother Helge Nilsen Thune three days before.

A 1912 land ownership map of Lake George Twp, Charles Mix County, South Dakota, shows an “O. W. Ellingboe” owning a 160 acre parcel, the northwest corner of Section 33.

In a 1914 land ownership atlas of Martin Twp, Rock County, Minnesota, “O W Ellingboe” owned an 80 acre parcel adjoining, and complementing, the two 80 acre parcels owned by “W O Ellingboe.”

Single and now head of the farm in the 1920 census. Living with him are his mother and sisters Bertha and Ida. The farm above his on the census sheet is Hans Nerison’s.

In the 1930 census, he is probably the Ole W. Ellingboe living on the Hans Nerison farm in Hills Village, Rock County. He is a farm laborer. He is erroneously shown as 51 years old (actually he was 61).

In the 1940 census, he is Ole W Ellingboe, a 71 year-old single man living in Hills. He’s a church janitor. He earned $200 in 1939. Ole had an 8th grade education.

In the 1950 census, he is a resident at the Bethesda Home for the Aged in Lincoln County, South Dakota.

An Elizabet O. (Betsy O.) Ellingboe b. 27 Jan 1871 in Iowa, mother’s maiden name Boe, died in Los Angeles County, California, on 16 Oct 1961.

She is probably the Bessie Ellingboe, dressmaker, recorded in the 1900 Sioux Falls, South Dakota, city directory. She rooms at the Odd Fellow block.

She is probably the Miss Bessie Ellingbo recorded in the 1911 and 1912 Denver city directories. In the latter, she is a fitter for the Daniels & Fisher Stores and rooms at 30 20th Avenue.

The 1913 Los Angeles city directory has a “Mrs.” Bessie O Ellingbo, dressmaker, residing at 823½ West 3rd.

In the 1918 Los Angeles city directory, Bessie Ellingboe lives at 348 S Figueroa.

In the 1930 census, A Bessie Ellingboe, age 59 and single, lived in Los Angeles as a “lodger.” Her occupation is something like modist (?). This Bessie was born in Wisconsin, her parents in Norway.

In the 1940 census, she is Bessie O Ellingboe, age 69, a lodger at the Ingraham Hotel in Los Angeles.

She is still living at the Hotel Ingraham, 1046 Wilshire Boulevard, at the time of the 1950 census.

It is likely that Julia did not marry Sherman Richard Cox. In the 1910 census, Sherman R. Cox, 41, born in Illinois, was living in Denver with his wife of two years Bertha M., 31, born in Iowa. Living with the couple was his mother, Carrie M. Sherman. He appears to be a livestock merchant. In the 1920 census, Sherman R. Cox, 52, born in Illinois, was living in Los Angeles Assembly District 63 with his wife Bertha M., 41, born in Iowa, and their children, Jean C., 6, and William S., 5. Both children were born in Colorado. Sherman is a livestock grower. In the 1930 census, Sherman R. Cox, 61, born in Illinois, was living in Los Angeles Assembly District 58 with his wife, Bertha M., 50, born in Iowa, and their children Jean, 16, and William S., 15. Sherman had no occupation. So it would seem that, unless Sherman Richard divorced Bertha, married Julia, and then divorced Julia and remarried Bertha, Julia and Sherman Richard were not married and that Julia followed Sherman Richard to California and was dependent on him for support.

Emigrated to the U.S. Lived in Seattle according to Jim’s site (Valdres Slekt). He is probably the Peter Ellingboe, age 27, who crossed from Canada into the U.S. at Vancouver in November of 1913. Peter is a single man, a laborer of Norwegian citizenship. He lists his mother, Mary Ellingbö of Sondefjord, Norway, as his nearest relative in the country from which he came. He is headed for Seattle. (His declaration of intention states that he arrived in San Francisco on May 1, 1912.)

His declaration of intention to become a citizen of the U.S. was filed on August 27, 1922, in Los Angeles County, California. He states that he was born in Andebu, Norway, and that he emigrated to the U.S. from Sondefjord on the vessel Admiralm. His last foreign residence was Sti, Norway. He was a deck hand and resided at the “Sailors Rest.” in San Pedro, California. He was 5 feet 10-1/2 inches tall and weighed 180 lbs. He had brown hair and blue eyes.

In the 1930 census, he was Peter Ellingboe, 43, a single man working as a bucker in a logging camp in Beaver Precinct, Clallam County, Washington.

In the 1938 Seattle city directory, he lived at 703 Marion, apartment 30.

In the 1940 census, he lived in a logging camp of the Snoqualmie Falls Lumber Company in the Warren Precinct of King County, Washington. Peder was a laborer.

As Peder Ellingbo he arrived back in the U.S., in New York, after a trip to Norway, on 7 Aug 1953 aboard the S.S. Stavangerfjord which had sailed from Oslo on July 28th. His address in the U.S. was 905 3rd Avenue, Seattle.

An article in the February 29, 1968, edition of the Seattle Daily Times listed him as a Seattle resident whose 1966 income tax refund was undeliverable due to lack of a correct mailing address.

His last residence according to SSDI was Lancaster, Los Angeles County, California.

In the census listing, the two women listed after her also came to the U.S. in 1916 from Norway: Anna Tveten, 21, and Gudrun Thomsen, 31.

In the 1921 Minneapolis city directory, she still lives at 245 Oak Grove but her occupation is “ctr.”

In the 1900 census, Knudt, 24, and his brother (apparently) Ole, 22, are single men boarding with a family in Sacred Heart, Renville County, Minnesota. Knudt “Elingoe” is shown as having been born in Norway in February of 1876 and having come to the U. S. in 1896. His occupation is saloon keeper.

At this point, he is working for his uncle’s saloon in Granite Falls. He later bought out his uncle and was the sole owner until 1903 when he sold the saloon/hotel in Sacred Heart and “engaged in general merchandise. The venture was unfortunate.” He went back to Granite Falls and ran a saloon.

In the 1905 state census, Knut, Clara, and Brunelle are living on Baldwin Street in Granite Falls. Knut is a saloon keeper. They had lived in Granite Falls for a year-and-a-half.

He moved to Milaca in 1905.

In the 1910 census, Knute and his family live in Milaca where Knute is the manager of a hardware store. The family consists of Knute I., 34, Clara A., 24, Brunelle M., 5, Harvey I or Q., 3, and Christine C., 1. Knute and Clara had been married for 7 years and these three children are the only ones Clara had had. Knute is shown as having come to the U.S. in 1880.

This was the Ellingboe Hardware Company which he managed until 1912 when he and a partner bought the Milaca State Bank. He bought out that partner in 1919.

Knute registered for the draft on September 12, 1918, in Princeton. His occupation is “banker” for the Milaca State Bank. His nearest relative is his wife Clara Ann. Knute is described as being of medium height and build with blue eyes and brown hair. He was a naturalized citizen.

Knute applied for his first passport in August of 1919 in Minneapolis. He intended to visit Norway to “visit aged parents.” This six-week trip is mentioned in the October 23, 1919, edition of the Princeton Union.

A Knute Ellingboe is listed in the 1920 and 1921 Minneapolis city directories at 2834 Chicago Avenue.

He is listed in “The Valdris Book”, a history of the Valdris Samband published in 1920 (available on Google Books), as Knudt Ellingboe of Milaca. He was a member of the Samband between 1905 and 1916.

In the 1920 census, Knute is shown as a bank president in Milaca. Although he is married, there is no wife listed as living with him. By that time, his wife Clara and their two children (Brunelle, 15, and Margaret, 10) are living in Minneapolis with Clara’s mother, Mary Austin.

Knute applied for a second passport on May 28, 1921, in Milaca. He was described as 45 years old, 5 feet, 9 inches tall, with blue eyes and a “regular” forehead and “regular” nose with a “straight, firm” mouth and a “square” chin. His hair was dark brown and “turning grey.” He had a ruddy complexion with an “oval, broad” face. He had the distinguishing mark of a “small wart inside right eyebrow.” In this application, he states that he came to the U.S. aboard the Christiania on May 1, 1896, and that he had resided, uninterruptedly, in Milaca for 16 years between 1905 and 1921. He conceded that his first passport, issued in Minneapolis in August of 1919, was “used and cancelled in visiting Norway.” Knute also states in this application that he was naturalized as a citizen of the U.S. in Granite Falls. He intends to leave from New York, aboard the Bergensfjord, on June 17, 1921.

On June 19, 1923, Knute served as the identifier for August Stromberg’s application for a U.S. passport. Knute, claiming that he resided in Milaca, the home of the applicant, said that he had known August Stromberg for 18 years and vouched for his identity.

In the 1930 census, Knute and his family lived on 2nd Avenue in Milaca where he was a loan agent for a trust company. The family lived in a house that Knute owned and that was valued at $5500. The family consisted of Knut, 53, Thora, 40, Robert T., 6, and Bertha E., 5. Thora was first married at age 32. Knute is shown as having come to the U. S. in 1905.

In the 1940 census, Knute and Thora and their two children lived in Milaca in the same house they had lived in in 1935. Thora’s father lives with them. Knute was an agent for an investors syndicate and earned $1025 in 1939. Knute had an eighth-grade education, Thora had had two years of college.

In the 1945 Faribault city directory, which includes Northfield, Knute and Thora live at 806 Forest Ave. Knute is a salesman.

In the 1948, 1950, and 1953 Rice County directories, Knute and Thora live at 915 W. 2nd Street in Northfield. Knute was a janitor at St. Olaf College.

In the 1950 census, Knute and Thora live at 915 W. 2nd Street in Northfield. He works as a custodian at an art barn at a college. Their household also includes Thora’s father and 8 lodgers, all of whom are probably students at St. Olaf. Those eight students, all either 19 or 20 years old, are: George K Lindberg, David Huseth, Robert Wrede, Owen Hawley, William Kopperud, Robert Hauge, Donald Maland, and Donald Myrald.

In the 1957 Faribault city directory, which includes Northfield, Knute and Thora were still at 915 W 2nd. Knute was an office worker for Edwin L Parson.



Knut’s last trip to Norway was in the summer of 1954. He arrived back in New York on 19 Jul 1954 from Oslo. An earlier trip was in 1919, right after the war. He arrived back in New York on October 7, 1919, aboard the S.S. Vangerfjord which had departed Kristiania on September 27, 1919. He went again in 1922. He arrived back in New York on September 9, 1921, aboard the S.S. Aquitania which had departed from Southampton on September 3rd.

Funeral services for Knute Ellingboe, 84, who died Thursday evening in Northfield Memorial hospital, will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at St. John's Lutheran church. Rev. B. R. Biorn will officiate and burial will be in Oaklawn cemetery. Friends may call at the Anderson Funeral Home Sunday afternoon and evening, and at the church one hour before the church service.

Ellingboe Knute Northfield News Aug/1960 Knute Ellingboe, 84, died -unexpectedly Thursday evening, Aug. 4, I960, at Northfield Hospital after a four-day illness. The death was due to a heart attack. The final illness occurred just as Mr. Ellingboe’s son, the Rev.
Theodore Ellingboe, was to leave on his return trip to the mission field in Cameroon, Africa, after spending his furlough in the United States. Pastor Ellingboe had planned to leave Northfield on Friday, he and his family to fly from New York on August 12. He will now leave on Tuesday, the day after the funeral of his father.

The funeral was held Monday afternoon, Aug. 8, at St. Johns Lutheran church where Mr. Ellingboe was a member. The Rev. Boral R. Biorn conducted the service. The Anderson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in Oaklawn cemetery, with James O. Caulfield, E. L. Parson, Rudolph Zanmiller, H. B. Jacobson, Adolph Olson and Ivar Brujord as pallbearers.

Mr. Ellingboe was born February 2, I876, in Valdres, Norway, the son of Ivar and Berit Ellingboe. He came to the United States in 1896, settling first at Granite Falls where he was engaged in farming. Later he became an employe of the Milaca Hardware company, then cashier of the Milaca State bank. For several years he was president of the bank. From 1930 till 1936, he managed farms that belong to a fraternal insurance group, the Ancient Order of United Workmen. He was employed by Investors Syndicate from 1936 until 1940. After coming to Northfield in 1940, he represented Lutheran Brotherhood. During World War II, he worked in shipyards at San Francisco, Calif. Later he was employed at St. Olaf College and as bookkeeper by the Dan Hansen Plumbing company. Recently he had been employed in the insurance and realty office of E. L. Parson. He is survived by his wife, the former Thora Larson of Brooklyn, N. Y. to whom he was married on July 10,1922, in Minneapolis; by one son, Theodore; one daughter, Miss Betty Ellingboe of Minneapolis; two grandchildren; a brother, Ivar, who lives in Norway; two sisters, Mrs. Bertha Steile of Minneapolis and Ambjor of Norway.

Miss Betty ElIingboe, who was engaged in work for The American Lutheran Church in the Seattle, Wash. area when she learned of
her fathers illness, arrive by plane Friday morning.

The Vang church book emigration record shows an Ole Iverson Ellingboe, b. 1877, konf. 15 May 1892, emigrating in 1900, perhaps leaving Vang on March 23rd. Marit Andersdatter Ellingboe (#5768), b. 1883, also left at about the same time.

Arrived at Ellis Island on April 11, 1900, aboard the S.S. Oceanic which had sailed from Liverpool on April 4th. Traveling with him on the Oceanic was his friend from Vang, Andris A. Belsheim. Anders Andersen Belsheim, b. 1866, had left Vang on the same day as Ole Ivarson.

In the 1900 U.S. census, Ole was rooming with his brother Knudt with a family in Renville County, Sacred Heart Twp.

In the 1908-1909 city directory for Albuquerque, he is Olie Elingbo, lather, who rooms at 524 S 1st.

He registered for the draft on September 12, 1918, at the Local Board, Renville County, Olivia, Minnesota, and was living in Maynard at the time. He worked and lived on the farm of Endre A. He is probably the Ole Ellingbo who was the subject of an article in the May 22, 1921, edition of the Alburquerque Journal. The article described a legal suit filed by Ellingbo to recover $108.50 of an unpaid bill for construction services.

She arrived in New York on May 31, 1907, aboard the S.S. Oceanic which had departed Liverpool on May 22, 1907. She was a maid destined for Milaca, home of her brother, Knut Ivarsen Ellingbö, who had paid for her ticket to the U.S. She was in good health, 5 feet 2.5 inches tall, with blonde complexion, blue eyes, and brown hair. She was travelling with her distant cousin, Kristoffer Ellingbö, brother of Jøger Ellingboe.

She and Anna were living at 2408 24th Avenue in south Minneapolis at the time of the 1920 census. Bertha was a hairdresser in a beauty parlor. Bertha came to the U.S. in 1907.

In the 1930 census, Bertha was living in an apartment on Spruce Avenue in Minneapolis with her daughter and her daughter’s two children. Bertha is a hairdresser in a “hair shop.”



In the 1940 census, Bertha Steile, a 58 year-old widow, lived at 2325 Washington Avenue N in the same rented apartment that she lived in in 1935. She was irregularly employed as a handicraft worker for a WPA sewing project.

Bertha died as the widow of John Steile. She died of uremia at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ann Stanley, 4501 Adair Avenue North. Her obit said that she had 5 grandsons and 18 great-grandchildren.
