He’s not living with Mathias in the 1905 state census so it’s likely that he had died by that time.

    Ola Olsen Nundahl

    B. 15 Sep 1857, Lærdal, Sogn og Fjordane, Norway, d. 28 Jul 1928, Vernon County, Wisconsin.

Ola Olsen Nundahl was the son of Ole Throndson Nundal, who was one of the five brothers and 3 sisters born to patriarch and matriarch Thrond and Brita on the Ekra farm in the Nundal Valley. As the second eldest of the family, Ole Throndson Nundal had inherited the tenant rights to Ekra when his eldest brother Anders died in 1863 as a young father. Ole then raised his own family at Ekra, including son Ola Olsen Nundahl, and another son Sever Olsen Nundahl.

Ola and his father Ole Throndson Nundal were both born on the isolated mountainside Ekra farm in the tiny Nundal Valley just outside the town of Ardal, located at one of the eastern end branches of the great Sogne Fjord in Fjordane county, Norway. Sever's paternal grandparents Thrond and Brita had raised a family of 5 boys and 2 girls at Ekra. The farm sat on a valley hillside, with its residents waking every morning to the sound of waterfalls that tumbled down the valley walls into a beautiful aquamarine freshwater lake, the Ardalsvatnet, displayed in a delightful panoramic scene just below the farm. There was a small dock at the water's edge, and the only way to the market town of Ardal about one mile away was by small boat.

Ola Olsen Nundahl, age 25, emigrated to the U.S. in 1882, leaving behind two women with newborn daughters who were his first two children. He emigrated to Stoughton, Dane County, Wisconsin within a few months of both births, perhaps to escape family "troubles". His younger brother Sever Oleson Nundahl had just emigrated to the same area at the age of 18 in 1880.

Ola conceived his first child, Elisabeth "Lizzy" Olsdatter Nundal, with a young neighbor woman who had grown up on the nearby Hagen farm in the Nundal Valley - she was his paternal first cousin *Brita Anfinsdatter Nundal*, the daughter of his father Ole's younger brother Anfin. Baby "Lizzy" was born on the Hagen farm in the Nundal Valley in January of 1882.

Complicating matters for himself, Ola's second baby arrived just 3 months after the first. In April of 1882 just prior to his emigration to Wisconsin, Ola became the father of Klara Tomina, who was born not far from the Nundal Valley, somewhere in the flatland farm area of Ardal, Norway to mother *Brita Sjursdatter Asperheim*. Ola married her, sometime either before or after she followed him to Wisconsin with her baby Klara a year or so later in 1883-84. They raised their subsequent seven children in Stoughton, Dane County, Wisconsin. Possibly there were a total of 8 additional children, including the unconfirmed Ole Jr. seen on the list below, who was born in 1886 and died of unknown causes at age 22 in 1908, and buried in the same Kickapoo cemetery as many other family members.

Ola Olsen Nundahl's and Brita Sjursdatter Asperheim's eight children were given the surname Nundahl:

    1. Klara Tomina Olsdtr. 1882
    2. Ida Olsdtr. 1884
    3.(Ole Olason Jr. b. 1886, died in 1908 age 22)
    4. Soren Olson 1888-90 (spouse Millie (Erickson) Nundahl; one child)
    5. Thea Olsdtr. 1890 (possibly infant)
    6. Martin Olson 1893
    7. Oscar Olson 1896
    8. Mabel Olsdtr. 1899
    9. Tilman Olson 1901

Ola's firstborn Elisabeth "Lizzy" Olsdatter Nundal was left behind in the Nundal Valley on the Hagen farm of her birth. She was initially raised by her single mother Brita, along with Brita's parents Ingeborg and Anfin (who was Lizzy's father Ola's paternal uncle). Mother Brita soon left the Hagen farm of her birth to marry. In 1894, when Lizzy was 12, her grandparents emigrated with her to Iowa, following their daughter Brita, who had emigrated and settled there with her husband and several children. Lizzy then lived with her mother Brita, stepfather, and her many half siblings.

Whether this Iowa family associated with Lizzy's father Ola and his family in Wisconsin is unknown. All of Ola's 8 other children were also Lizzy's half siblings. Ola's father Ole and his wife Kari, who were also Lizzy's paternal grandparents, had emigrated to Wisconsin in 1886 when Lizzy was just 4 years old, after they had finished raising their family on the Ekra farm in the Nundal Valley.

Both Lizzy's maternal and paternal grandfathers, Anfin and his older brother Ole (Ola's father), had been born and raised at the Ekra farm in the Nundal Valley. Anfin's and Ole's pioneer brother Johannes lived until sometime after 1900 in Iowa with many grandchildren from his two daughters. Their pioneer brother Sjur had died young in 1883, leaving descendants in the Kickapoo Valley of Wisconsin. The 4 brothers' sister Gertrude had also emigrated with her husband to Iowa in 1888 with half of her children, at the age of 54.

Ola Olsen Nundahl, lived not far from his brother Sever Olsen Nundahl according to the 1920 census. Among Ola's children was Tilman Olason Nundahl (b. 1901, d. 1971) who was just a year or two older than Sever's Tillman Oliver Nundahl. The two cousins may have spelled their names slightly differently. Ola also had a son Soren Olason Nundahl, who had a son by a first marriage named Myron (who used the surname Erickson), and a daughter by a second marriage named Beatrice (see obit below).

    Beatrice 'Bea" A. Nundahl (1916 - 2010) Obituary

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Baptism: 24 Jul 1859, Årdal, Sogn og Fjordane, Norway

    Notes:

Anna was living in De Forest at the time of Sever’s death.

In the 1910 census, she and her husband of 27 years, Tom G., are living in Soldiers Grove. Anna is shown as never having had children.

According to Judi, Soren Nundahl, Anna’s nephew, worked for Anna on her farm at Soldiers Grove in 1916 when Beatrice was born. In the 1920 census, Soren was a renter on a farm in Soldiers Grove, presumably Anna’s. Anna is not listed in the 1920 census.

At the time of the 1930 census, she was widowed, 70 years old, and living as “sister-in-law” with Peter J. Sime, 77, and his wife Bertha, 80, in Soldiers Grove. Bertha and Peter had been married since they were 27 and 23, respectively. Everyone was born in Norway. Anna came to this country in 1883; Peter and Bertha came to this country in 1886.

In the 1940 census, Anna is living in Soldiers Grove with her sister Ingebor Severson, in the same house, owned by Anna, in which Anna had lived in 1935. Both women are widows. In 1935, Ingebor had been living in rural Vernon County. Both women had eighth-grade educations. Anna was a naturalized citizen, Ingebor was still an alien.

Not listed in the index of Vernon County deaths. Probably died in Crawford County.

Anna, not her brother Sjur/Sever, was almost certainly the last living member of the family with a memory of Ekra, the family farm in Norway.

Anna married Thomas Johannesen OREN on 27 Oct 1882 in Årdal, Sogn og Fjordane, Norway. Thomas (son of Johannes Olsen SEIM and Marita Christophersdatter) was born on 11 Aug 1858 in Årdal, Sogn og Fjordane, Norway; died on 1 May 1915; was buried in North Kickapoo Lutheran Church Cemetery, Franklin Twp, Vernon County, Wisconsin. 10. 15.  Sever Olsen NUNDAHLSever Olsen NUNDAHL Descendancy chart to this point (3.Ole2, 1.Thrond1) was born on 12 Nov 1861 in Årdal, Sogn og Fjordane, Norway; died on 19 May 1954 in Viroqua, Vernon County, Wisconsin; was buried on 22 May 1954 in North Kickapoo Lutheran Church Cemetery, Franklin Twp, Vernon County, Wisconsin.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Occupation: Stone Mason, Farmer
    • Vernon County Death Index: V25, P549 As Sever O.
    • Baptism: 1 Jan 1862, Årdal, Sogn og Fjordane, Norway

    Notes:

Born Sjur. Called Sever S. in the 1900 census.

Because a Wisconsin Nundahl is a member of the Fjord Heritage Club, Sever’s family may have come from the Årdal and Lærdal region of Sogn and Fjordane fylke, Norway.

His obituary said, incorrectly, that Sever was born May 12th.

His obituary claims that Sever joined his brothers and sisters in Wisconsin when he was 19 years old. It appears that Sever left Norway on June 1, 1880. The emigration records from Bergen for people from Årdal note a Sjur Olsen Nundal, age 18, unmarried, born in 1862, leaving on the Amerikanske Linie on that date.

Sever married Bertha in a “condensed M E ritual” conducted by G. N. Nuzum and witnessed by Sever Bowe and Ida Anderson. Sever’s occupation is shown as “mason” in his marriage record.

His obituary also says that Sever was survived by 22 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren.

    Played the violin at dances.

In the 1905 state census, the family is recorded as Sever Nundal, 44, stone mason, Bertha, 36, Carl, 7, Clara, 6, and Tillman, 3. By that time, the family had moved to Franklin Twp. In the 1915 plat book for Vernon County, Sever Nundahl owns the 40 acres to the southwest of the original Claus Bowe homestead. By comparing the 1915 and 1896 plats, it would appear that Sever Nundahl bought the southern half of an 80 (two 40s) that Andrew and Sever Bowe owned in 1896.

Sever’s brother, Ole Nundahl, lived not too far from Sever according to the 1920 census. Ole’s children included Martin, Mabel, and another Tilman who was apparently about 2 years older than Sever’s Tilman. The two boys may have spelled their names slightly differently.

At the time of the 1930 census, Sever, 66, and Bertha, 62, were living on Black Bottom Road in Franklin Township on the same road as their children and their families. Sever was 31 when he was first married; Bertha was 27. Sever was born in Norway and emigrated in 1889.

In the 1940 census (indexed as Memlahl), Sever, Brita, Tilman Oliver, and Tilman’s children lived on a farm on Highway 14. For all of them, it was the same house that they had lived in in 1935.

In the 1950 census, he was the 88 year-old widower living with his son Tillman and Tillman’s three children in the town of Franklin, Vernon County. His grandson Sylvan was listed as the head of household.

According to the history of the Kickapoo Church, “Sjur Nundal” was a member of the building committee responsible, in 1926, for the building of the basement under the church.

Find A Grave contributor Deir claims that “Undoubtedly, Sever was the last living person in the U.S. with a memory of the Ekra farm {in Norway}.” This is probably not true because Sever’s older sister Anna survived him by four years.

Sever’s obit said that he had a sister, Mrs. Annie Oren, living in DeForest.

    Birth:
The Luster bygdebok, in its description of Kari’s family, says that Sever was from “Ekra under Nundal i Årdal.”

    Baptism:
In the churchbook as Sjur Olssen, son of O. Trondssen N?ndal and Kari Mathiasdatter.

    Died:
Cora’s diary of May 20, 1954, says that she “got message Sever N. passed away.”

Sever married Brithe (Bertha) BOWE on 19 Sep 1896 in Vernon County, Wisconsin. Brithe (daughter of Claus Sjursen BØE (BOWE) and Kari Andersdatter MAREIM) was born on 28 Sep 1868 in Franklin Twp, Vernon County, Wisconsin; died on 16 May 1944 in La Crosse County, Wisconsin; was buried on 19 May 1944 in North Kickapoo Lutheran Church Cemetery, Franklin Twp, Vernon County, Wisconsin. • Social Security Number: 396-26-1219 issued in Wisconsin before 1951
    • Vernon County Death Index: V35, P340

    Notes:

At the time of the 1930 census, Carl and Mearl and family were living on a farm in Franklin Township at "Brookville & Black Bottom Road" next to the Odin Olson farm. The household consisted of Carl, 32, his wife Mearl, 25, daughter Eileen, 7, and sons Selmer, 5, Kenneth, 2, and Ivan, 0. Also living with the family was a lodger/servant named Edwin McKnight, 43. Carl was 24 when he was first married, Mearl was 17. Carl was not a veteran. Down the road past Carl's farm was Sever Nundahl's farm and Tilman Nundahl's farm.

The history of the Kickapoo United Lutheran Church in Soldiers Grove records the death of a Carl Nundahl in 1968.

Carl registered for the draft on August 14, 1918, in Vernon County. The draft registrar was A E Smith. He claimed to be 21 and to have been born on August 12, 1897. His home address was Route 5, Viroqua, and he was born in Soldiers Grove. He claimed employment as a farmer, employed by Sever Nundahl of Route 5, Viroqua, who was also Carl’s nearest relative. Carl was described as tall and of medium build with dark brown eyes and black hair.

In the 1940 census, he was a farmer in Franklin Twp on the Viroqua to Black Bottom Road. He and his wife had been educated through the 8th grade. Eileen was no longer living at home.

In the 1950 census, mis-indexed as Mundahl in Ancestry, he and his family live on a farm in the town of Franklin, Vernon County, on “14 toward Brookville.” Kenneth and Eileen are no longer at home. Merlin works as an usher in a theatre.

Carl’s daughter says: My parents bought the Bowe farm and moved there when Eileen was eleven months old, which would be the year 1923. If there was someone else living there between that time and when Sever and Andrew left, I do not know who that would be. I have many, many pleasant memories of the farm and growing up. It was the place where a lot of gatherings were held. When I was growing up, Sunday was the day that everyone visited.”

The 1948 Vernon County plat book shows that Carl’s 115 acres were a bit different from Claus’s original homestead. In Section 27, Carl’s farm could be described as all of the SE corner of the SW corner, nearly all of the SW corner of the SE corner, and most, but not all (he didn’t own what was on the east side of the road) of the NW corner of the SE corner. Carl’s farm adjoined, and was east of, Ernest Ekum’s farm which was also all in Section 27. Bertha (who was not alive in 1948) is shown as the owner of 40 acres in the other section immediately south of Section 27. Bertha’s 40 was the NE corner of the NW corner of that section.

He auctioned off his cattle and farm equipment on March 6, 1956.

    Notes:

Clara’s birth to “Sever Nundal” was reported in the July 29, 1898, issue of the Crawford County Advance (page 1, column 2) published in Soldiers Grove.

The Kickapoo Scout’s 16 Jul 1918 edition noted that Thea Thompson and Clara Nundahl were going to La Crosse for employment.

At the time of the 1930 census, Odin and Clara and family were living in Franklin township on a farm next to Clara's brother Carl at "Brookville & Black Bottom Road." Odin and Clara are shown as renting their farm. The family consisted of Odin, 35, Clara, 32, Benetta, 9, Orland, 8, Mildred, 6, Selma, 5, Helen, 3+, Agnes, 2+, and Clifford, 0, and a lodger/servant named Martin Dahlberg, 21. The household apparently did not have a radio. Odin was first married at age 25, Clara at age 23. Clara's parents are shown as having been born in Norway; everyone else was born in Wisconsin. Odin is shown as being a veteran of the World War.

On the other side of the Olson farm was Anna Thompson and down the road past Carl's farm was Sever Nundahl's farm and Tilman Nundahl's farm.

In the 1940 census, the Olson farm is listed a few households down from the Carl Nundahls but on the same census page. Odin and Clara did not own their farm (Carl owned his).

Cora said that Clara was her best friend in childhood.

Clara was shown as unmarried and living at home at the time of the 1920 census on January 11th.

Clara was living in Beloit at the time of her father’s death. Cora had Clara’s 1953 address as 202½ Short Street in Beloit.

Nicknamed “Little Bubby” or “Little Buddy.”

From the Vernon County Broadcaster, December 27, 1934:

Drowning of 2 Boys Saddens Community

A duo-tragedy occurred last Sunday afternoon at half past three when two small boys, sons of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Nundahl and Mr. and Mrs. Odin Olson, met death by drowning in the upper Black Bottom creek.

The two five year old boys were playing on the ice of the creek, which was exceedingly thin at that place. It is supposed that the ice broke while they were at play, and the shock of the chilling water stupefied them to such a degree that they were unable to reach the bank. The water was four feet deep at the place where they were drowned.

They were discovered half an hour later by the other Nundahl children, who ran for help. Mrs. Nundahl, with the aid of two childen, rescued the bodies from the water and summoned assistance from a neighbor.

The entire community combines in offering the Nundahl and Olson families the deepest of sympathy in this period when joy and happiness is so prevalent. Funeral services will be held this Thursday at the Folsom church, with the Reverend Haakenson officiating.

From the Vernon County Censor, December 26, 1934:

Two Lads Drown in Black Bottom

One of the most heart-breaking tragedies that the Censor has been called upon to chronicle in years took place last Sunday afternoon in upper Black Bottom when young sons of Mr. and Mrs. Oden Olson and Mr. and Mrs. Carl Nundahl met death in the icy waters of the creek.

The older boys of the two families had gone sliding earlier in the afternoon, and Clifford Olson and Ivan Nundahl, both not yet five years of age, got the same idea and started out with the sled. The first intimation of trouble came when the older boys returned to the Nundahl home and were met by the dog whose frantic agitation finally led them to the bank of the creek where the bodies of the two young lads were found in the water. From marks on the bank it was apparent that the dog had tried to pull them out but failed.

Mrs. Nundahl, although frail and ill and a mother only six weeks ago, plunged into the ice-cold water above her waist to retrieve the bodies. She was prostrated from the shock and grief and her condition was serious for a time. Mr. Nundahl was not at home at the time of the shocking accident.

The double funeral will be held at the Nundahl home near Brookville, and at the Kickapoo church Thursday afternoon, Rev. Haagenson officiating. To the heart-stricken families the most sincere sympathy of the entire community goes out at this Christmas season when their joy has been transformed to bitter grief.

    His obituary:

Ivan Tollef Nundahl, son of Carl and Mearl Nundahl, was born March 23, 1930, and departed from this life December 23, 1934, at the age of four years and nine months.

He leaves to mourn his departure besides his parents, one sister, Eileen, four brothers, Selmar, Kenneth, Merlin, and Donald, his grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Sever Nundahl, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Crook, five uncles Tillman Nundahl, Otto, Clair, Floyd and Faye Crook, three aunts, Mrs. Odin Olson, Mrs. Stanley Simpson, and Mrs. Gale Aikins, a number of cousins and many other relatives and friends.

Little Buddy, as he was better known, was baptized into the Kickapoo Lutheran Church in May, 1930, by Rev. Finstad. He was of a sweet and loving disposition and his smile won everyone’s heart. He will be greatly missed by his loved ones but we know he has gone to that greater home prepared for the blest and is same in the arms of Jesus.

Funeral services were held from the Carl Nundahl home in Brookville and from the Kickapoo Lutheran Church December 2nd, Rev, H. T. Haagenson officiating.

Mr. and Mrs. Odin Olson and Family

Norma says that Bubby and Clifford told their mothers that they were going to the barn to play but instead decided to go ice skating on the thin ice. Mearl and Eileen found the boys and got them out of the water and took them to the house on sleds.

    Notes:

Not mentioned in his father’s obit.

Clifford Milford drowned with his cousin Ivan “at Black Bottom” on December 23, 1934.

Clifford Milford Olson, son of Odin and Clara Olson, was born January 3, 1930, in the town of Franklin, Vernon County, and departed this life on December 23, 1934, at the age of 4 years, 11 months, and 20 days.

He leaves to mourn his untimely departure the grief-stricken parents, six sisters, namely: Benetta, Mildred, Selma, Helen, Agnes, Anna, and three brothers, Orland, Ervin, and Robert James, three grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Sever Nundahl and Mrs. Christena Helgeson.

Blessed be his memory, “The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away.”

Funeral services were held from both the Odin Olson and Carl Nundahl homes and the Kickapoo Lutheran Church, December 27th, Rev. H. T. Haagenson officiating.
